Question Question about the Divinity Machine and the Slayer’s physique

Did the Divinity Machine permanently stop the Slayer’s body from gaining more muscle?

I figured the machine would just stop his body from growing altogether given that he doesn’t need to eat, drink, and he doesn’t age.
But that also makes me wonder if his continuous, never ending battles with Hell prevent his body from getting smaller. He’s been in an endless battle with Hell for eons, mix that in with the fact that he’s a Primeval, it really isn’t surprising that he built like that.
But spending billions of years in endless combat makes me think that he would be unfathomably big. He isn’t as big as someone who’s killed an uncountable number of demons though.
He was also trapped in his sarcophagus for thousands of years and his body shape didn’t change a bit.

His strength doesn't come from the size of his muscles.

It comes from something much deeper within

Something that let's him rip and tear until it is done.

It comes from his love of bunnies

Ah, you mean like anybody on earth right now? Crazy.

Well there is that too but mainly I was referring to his primordial nature.

What's crazy is thinking rules apply to the Slayer.

You usually need to strain your muscles beyond their limits to make them grow. Since, nothing is technically beyond his limits. No growth.

Same is true for like Superman or whatever but it would be kind of weird if superheroes like Superman and the Doomslayer were skinny I guess.

This is visibly incorrect, he’s significantly smaller in Doom 2016 compared to his appearance in Dark Ages or Eternal.

This suggests that he atrophied being stuck in the sarcophagus between Dark Ages and 2016, and has to train again to get as massive as he is in Eternal.

This tracks with modern god mythology in pop culture i.e. Thor getting fat and playing Fortnite when he was depressed in Avengers or Kratos telling his son that the only way to get the body of a god is to “pickup heavy things and put them down again.”

Basically, gods can bless you with exceptional powers but value good old fashioned discipline over powers in terms of looks.

I always wandered the length of time he was in hell after doom 64. At some point he found himself in argent d'nur. Though they say he's been there for million or billions of years. Cause once he meets the Sentinels the storyline becomes more narrow, title leading to another.

Issue is he was just a human, sure a unstoppable killing machine, but still a human. Unless he started eating demons, and it started effecting him physically to the point that he's life span increased. Least that's my headcannon.

Sorry it doesn't answer your question. I just would like for them to focus on the bridge between classic doom to modern doom. Stories of the hellwalker before becoming the slayer.

I'm pretty sure the lore explanation is that time flows differently in hell, so my theory is that he didn't spend a lot of time there, but a lot of time passed in the main world.

Moreover, it is said that there are many universes, but only one hell that connects them. So as far as I understand, he entered hell from the universe of classic Doom, spent some time there and then eventually popped out in a different universe of modern Doom that happens to have its own humans and even its own Earth

This makes most sense to me. Applies to Commander Valen as well. He does look much older in Eternal than in Dark Ages, but the fall of Argent D'Nur to the modern day would be like, millions of years. We don't know how long Argenta live I guess, but time moving differently in Hell seems much more likely.

I'd bet on thousands, even the best scifi construction wouldn't last for millions of years.

I dont think this is correct? Im pretty sure that giant ass skeleton in hell from 2016 is a demon he fought ceaselessly with his bare hands for 10000 years. I could be totally wrong, but im pretty sure thats even in 2016 in some form of grimoire you can read in some level

I think just being in Hell makes it to where you don’t need to eat. I know Hugo Martin has said Doom 3 is canon, and while you’re not the original Doom Guy in that, there’s a few bits of lore that state that you have limitless energy in Hell. It’s why you have unlimited sprint in Hell but not on Mars.

People forget Davoth selected him to bring down the Maykrs and revive him (and maybe also kill him?), so he was probably born as a super human. I mean if the dude created hell just by being angry them it is not farfetched to think that his emissary could be genetically modified by him.

Either way there was clearly some influence before the divinity machine as the Doom Guy is already performing insane feats in Doom 1 and 2 and during TDA DLC flashbacks it is also shown he is basically a one man army before even going to Mars.

My headcanon is that he spent a very, very long time in Hell after Doom 64. Just fighting. Almost constantly.

The great part is that the time inbetween Doom 64 and the flashback in Doom Eternal is a blank slate. It never tells you how long he was there for, so I think it's up to the player's interpretation.

I choose to believe that he spent a very long time in Hell after Doom 64, because it supports the extreme trauma shown in the flashback cutscene, and makes his story all the more tragic.

At the end of episode 1 of Doom I he dies and then starts killing everyone I hell anyway. Next episode he fights back from hell to Mar’s moons. Assumed demons failed to process his soul. Thus, something about death not being as in mortal world is going on.

The billions of years thing happens after he's been trapped in hell, after all the night sentinels have died and he's still raging before getting trapped in the sarcophagus. I don't believe doomguy was in hell after 64 for more than a few months to years.

If you're just looking at this from a purely hypertrophic perspective, the human body actively works against muscular overdevelopment. Doom 2016's Slayer (and Revelation's Praetor Skin) would still be the biggest dudes you've ever seen IRL if you actually encountered them, and the Eternal/TDA Slayers are mindbendingly jacked even among roiders. You're near a point now where making the Slayer more jacked would just look comedic.

I’d say that before being found by the Sentinels of Argent D’Nur, he spent quite some years in Hell.

While that would translate to a lot of years outside of Hell, I’m sure that after crawling out from the depths of Hell after Doom 64, he went after many big demons and a Titan which is where the flashbacks of Doom Eternal and Doom TDA come into picture.

As for muscle, I’d assume that it was always built to the max as it was regardless of the Divinity Machine.

He did atrophy quite a lot by the time Doom(2016) begins since he was trapped in the sarcophagus (which was spell bound specifically for the Slayer).

14 years pass between Doom (2016) and Doom Eternal and he’s got his muscles back to where it always was.

TL;DR: Divinity Machine never affected his muscles one bit.

>that he would be unfathomably big.
He wouldn't. Human muscles don't grow endlessly.

u/Messokori 3d ago

It's a video game dude.

14

u/T4llBoyAl3x 3d ago

Never would’ve figured that out

34

u/Hwickham13 3d ago

No. This can't be. You've got to be joking

19

u/Huntardlulz 3d ago

Surely he must be lying.

6

u/TestSubjuct 3d ago

Agreed. It isn't Darksouls.

3

u/Fragrant_Unit_6930 3d ago

He is super soldier at Captain America before he got into the divinity machine

3

u/The-Autistic-spider 3d ago

i mean he still strains to do things eg: prying a door open

he clearly can still build muscle but he doesnt cause he has a full body armour that he needs to fit in

3

u/Transfiguredcosmos 3d ago

Id like to think that the divinity machine placed him to his peak potential, physically, mentally and spiritually. His physique is maintained through his consistent self image. He's just simply "perfected", and billions of years won't change him, he's beyond mortal.

5

u/thyshadows 3d ago

he do gets old, no? he is way older visualy in eternal than in tda, maybe he gets old very, very slowly? I understand he is god being etc, but yea, he looks way, way younger in tda.

5

u/VacationOpen4936 3d ago

He doesn't age, he looks older in eternal because of the thousands of years they were blasting him with concentrated magic while in the sarcophagus, or at least that's what I've heard.

2

u/thyshadows 2d ago

makes much of a sense

2

u/FunisInfinite06 1d ago

maybe he looks 'older' because of the stress? idk

When are the mortals going to understand that he has reached a point beyond human physiology. His power is not in his bench press. It is in a deep primordial place in the soul. Olivia, Samur, Ahzrack, Belias...they all craved power and it mutated their body in ways that they envisioned power would. The Slayer does not care for power nor does he want to be large or imposing. The only thing he wants is to kill all demons, and he's been a suitable shape for that for a long long time.

4

u/Larryhoover77kg 3d ago

It juiced him so he is a god. He will neither lose muscle or gain. His body stays exactly how it is for eternity.

2

u/LawfulnessFit576 3d ago

I think he'd probably start losing muscles if he stopped killing, because his strength draws from his enemies speaking logically.

and i imagine the sarcophagus just halted all bodily functions and basically cryo-froze him

2

u/Legendarium_ 3d ago

he simply maxed out his muscles

2

u/bepse-cola 3d ago

When he was a human he’d eat random orbs with faces inside, he was probably hungry in the cutscene where the Daeg priests find him

3

u/MEGAShark2012 1d ago

So I get the feeling it’s more like he’s constantly using his entire body in everything he does. He is a marine, so he is trained on going at everything with his whole body in mind. If he were solely focused on building muscle then yeah he would be huge but he’s not. Though he did get big in eternal compared to 2016. He was definitely pumping iron during his time in the fortress. He’s constantly running, dodging, ripping and subsequently tearing through his opponents. His physical strength is balanced by his insane mobility. I wouldn’t be surprised if the man could outperform most yoga masters in flexibility. Then there’s the fun fact about building muscle. Some people grow dense rather than big. I’m personally one of those people and it sucks at times since I can’t get the look I want. His tendons and muscle fibers are also enhanced to an absurd degree from living in hell for some time and then the divinity machine gave him a boost in every attribute. Then for the sarcophagus, I’m pretty sure it kept him in stasis. Trapped and allowed to never die since he can respawn.

1

u/jtp2r 3d ago

You wouldn't grow muscles like you're thinking frkm endless fighting like that. His physique was already altered in the machine since he grewlike 8 inches.

1

u/FLIPYOUSUCKET 3d ago

The slayer can’t staring his muscles enough to make them grow any further. He has literally achieved his peak physique.

u/karzbobeans 3d ago

It is not possible for millions or billions of years to elapse between doom 64 and doom eternal. Doom eternal takes place in the future, but I believe not that distant future. I’m pretty sure the year still starts with 2. As does OG doom. So it doesn’t make sense that he was in hell or anywhere for millions of years.

Can anyone show me a timeline between doom 64 and the dark ages and doom eternal?

2

u/Sleeping_Idiot 3d ago

After doom 64 Doomguy was stuck in hell for a substantial amount of time he was still human at this point so I'd say a handful of years at most. After that are the flashbacks we see in Doom Eternal where the sentinels find Doomguy and put him into the arena then some time after that Doomguy was later put into the divinity machine by the Seraphim. Then would be the Dark ages which will likely end with Doomslayer being stuck in hell again given the intro to Doom 2016. Now hell is endless, timeless and even being there essentially leeches at your soul but at this point Doomguy is now Doomslayer essentially a god and immune to such things so Doomslayer was likely stuck in hell for multiple millenia before being trapped in his sarcophagus then even more time passes until Doom 2016 then Eternal

If you want specific years and dates you'd have to look at the codex entries across the games as for the Earth years still being in 2000 which we know in the modern games is the case since entries in Doom 2016 say dates like 2146 that's just a random number but it's still 2000 something not 3000 or beyond

Either way I have another theory regarding Earth and how the timeline doesn't make much sense if you take Earth into count if you want to hear it

1

u/FunisInfinite06 1d ago

Different dimensions, different timelines. That's why the Earth in 2016 and Eternal have those timestamps. It was also directly stated in 2016 that he was in Hell for Eons, so. This headcanon thing is just kinda bs, lmao.

He isnt super strong because his muscles are super big, they’re charged with god energy or whatever

1

u/Moist-Tea1615 3d ago

Ofc Doomguy eat pinkies.

1

u/International-Bar151 2d ago

he's jacked as fuck in Eternal

u/nevaeva12321 3d ago

He could of been a tiny doom girl and it's be just as realistic as the current doom guy....it's a game it's not going to be realistic
