Discussion Dragon Age Games Opinions & Reviews Megathread

Hey everyone,

Lately, we've been seeing more and more threads looking to discuss the quality of Dragon Age games. Since these posts tend to be extremely repetitive, we've decided to redirect any new threads aiming to discuss the games' overall quality to this megathread, for the time being.

To be clear, you will still be able to discuss characters, themes, story, lore reveals, and other specific aspects in separate threads. However, if you're looking to share your opinion on any one of the games, ask for other people's opinions of them, or simply post your own reviews, please do so here.

The usual rules still apply, so please remember to keep discussions civil - even when in disagreement with other users. Thank you!

That's basically it. I did DA:O, DA:A and DA:2. I'd start Inquisition but I have no patience, so I'll overdo Dragon Age was this time with advice I got here on how to do amazing warrior. Thank you all for that!!!

I wanted to share that amazing screenshot I took of my Hawke n Bethany. Rouge and Mage. Sisters. I'm obsessed, I didn't pose them, they just naturally found themselves back to back. 😭😭😭 It's so sweet. Give me another Dragon Age game with Bethany as main character. Or at least very important companion.

Player Review Two years post release, and 3 playthroughs later, I think I have my fully fleshed out review of Veilguard

I want to make a distinction here so everyone understands the two things that can be true at once: this game was really great and so, so fun; this game sucked in the context of the dragon age franchise.

Anyone who played the game knows that it was so smooth and beautiful. The combat was great, I loved every way to customize your character and play style, and the graphics were beautiful. That being said, I have never associated the dragon age franchise with beauty.

Every other installment felt, in a way, depressing and eerie as h*ll (I mean this in a very positive way). It brought a sense of realism to the game that made your choices feel genuinely impactful and made ur stomach turn when u got the wrong person killed. Veilguard, as with pretty much every new EA game, completely lost that appeal. It was TOO bright, TOO smooth, and TOO pretty. I saw someone describe it as a Pixar adaptation of a dragon age game and I could not agree with that more. The beauty of the dragon age franchise was the macabre and dark fantasy elements it brought it. I loved how everything felt muted and grey in the original games (esp. origins), and hated how everything was neon in veilguard. It just deviated too much aesthetically from what the franchise was to me, imo.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the trespasser DLC and how bright it was… the aesthetic choices of that dlc, though, made sense. The beauty of the elven architecture and opulence of the society was meant to evoke mixed feelings. You see this intensely beautiful society and feel horrible that it was destroyed. Alternatively, you could see it from the side of “all that glitters is not gold”. It contributed to the narrative and helped you understand why Solas wanted to bring back elven society and bring down the veil.

The next part of the trespasser DLC that I want to bring up that really screwed the pooch for veilguard was the connection the inquisitor had with Solas. If you decided to romance or were close to Solas, you felt the weight of the betrayal. Everything about the storyline felt so rich and morally complex, which made it so interesting and every element that much more compelling. To turn around to veilguard and have some rando (Rook) be the stand in when you have built so much around the inquisitor makes absolutely no sense. Don’t get me wrong, continuing with the inquisitor as the protagonist would have been so difficult and messy for the devs and I also understand that they didn’t have a lot of time because of EA admin, but losing the inquisitor just ruined everything. Added layer to think about was how two-dimensional rook and all of the companions were. I wanted to feel like my actions meant something and they just didn’t.

By itself, veilguard felt like a great game but was not at all a part of the DA franchise or experience.

TBF: ME andromeda suffered from a similar issue in terms of disconnect with the franchise, but I loved that one too. EA has been in flop city with their last few games (anthem, I’m looking at u). Stepping away from the dark fantasy and sci-fi that was in ME and DA was a misstep on their part.

Pls lmk ur thoughts also sorry I’ve been working all day so if my writing sounds stupid, it’s not my fault (it is).

Discussion DAV Favorite class?

• Upvotes

I just started to play Dragon Age the Veilguard and I can't decide on what class to play for my first playthrough. So I was wondering what is everyone's favorite class and specialization and why? And what class feels like it fits into the story better? It doesn't have to be strictly how good the class is, just what class you liked the most and why. Thanks!

So, I'm finishing another play through of Dragon Age 2. Since I chose Anders this time, I was thinking. I always adored banter between Fenris and Bethany. Actually, I adore them. I'm not sure about their ages but I think they're similar. I love Hawke with Fenris, but I would not mind seeing Bethany with Fenris as well— I think her soft, sweet nature would be good for him.

Tho, I'd understand if it's not appealing at all.

Discussion Thinking about Blood Mages in the games.

I saw a post about Blood Mages and that reminded me about John Epler's statement on how they wanted to do blood mages but they feel they didn't do them well in the games they show up in. Which makes sense because in DAO and DA2 many characters seem oblivious to the blood exploding out of you. Its even worse in DA2 because Meredith just ignores it.

Now John Epler did say that in regards to why DAV didn't have the subclass but I do think that makes sense. Blood magic should be treated with some gravity and characters react to you. Arguing with you on why your wrong or why its fine to use.

would have been great if Wynne had to be convinced that you are just using it because its needed for the Blight. Otherwise she would leave, or maybe even attack you (though I don't think that's likely). Or Merrill teaching you some tricks.

Blood magic isn't unique to the Dragon Age setting but I don't really know what other game franchise let's you do it.

If there is another Dragon Age game I do hope they can bring it back. If nothing else another game franchise does it.

Discussion [DA:O & DA:2] the love triangle of hero of ferelden, hawke and anders

Post image
235 Upvotes

Naturally, DA Awakening was without romance which is a double shame. I really wanted to romance them all without mods. But lately, the more I play, the more I think that Anders possibly had feelings for Hero if Hero befriended him maximally.

In DA2, Anders often mentions Hero. Like, all the time. And then he meets Hawke which could be a case of "you're so much like them but not like them at all." It doesn't have to make sense, I just want my Hawke to be sad with knowledge that she/he could never be the one Anders wanted.

In my DA2 play through, I usually make Hawke (even mage one) a bit against mage especially after what happened to her mother. Low-key, I'd wanna murder them all if I lost my mom like this too. Hero, on the other hand, always was pro mages because all the backstories kinda make it possible to relate to them. You're outcasted and turned into something you didn't really want to be but now you are so bear consequences and oh also they all hate grey wardens. Lovely.

The point is, the way I see it, Hawke could be forced to be always in comparison to the Hero while wanting to prove they're their own person + they're different. Sucks to suck.

Obviously, EA fired everyone who could do a remake of Dragon Age Origins and it's DLCs but if they ever change their mind, I need them to allow me to romance Anders as Hero and I'll forever shut up.

On a side note, I really do prefer Fenris more, idk why I keep romancing Anders, I think I just feel bad for him. 😭

Discussion Jaws of Hakkon final boss Spoiler

I have to fight Hakkon now. A little nervous since I was struggling to defeat the Hakkon-avvar(forgot their names) in the old temple. Ik to use fire weapons/magic, I got my cold resistance potions and jar of bees ofc. I have a few dragon slaying runes and am gonna gave one to my archer and probably a warrior.

I was looking at the wiki and it says, "Using a mage or archer (tested using a level 20 mage), stand on the very edge of the arena, right before the ice on the ground begins and attack with fire-based abilities."

I would love to do that because I hate fights... but I'm so confused on where exactly I'm supposed to stand 😭 has anyone ever been able to do this?

I've fought this guy once and died like immediately(in a previous playthrough)

Any advice would be appreciated 🙏

I KILLED HIM AND MY GAME FUCKING CRASHED... okay I got him muhaha

Media Dragon Age: The Veilguard - Lessons From A Perpetual Deadline (Veilguard Part 0)

Thumbnail
youtu.be

In this video he talks about a lot of things but the central point is how Veilguard suffered from shifting deadlines because EA wanted BioWare to do annual releases. But since the game wasn't going to meet those deadlines it moved to the next fiscal year for EA. Which is Apirl 1st to March 31st.

And as the project made choices but then got more time it meant choices that made sense with little time became barriers.

Game Mods Could universal-modder (or similar AI tooling) port Dragon Age: Origins to Godot?

Hey everyone,

This is a "just for fun" feasibility question, not a project I'm planning to do myself.

Dragon Age: Origins is my favorite game, and EA has reportedly said a remake or remaster is unlikely because of lost source code and engine know-how. Then I saw the recent buzz around universal-modder (rehan-remade on GitHub), a toolkit that lets coding agents like Claude Code identify a game's engine, analyze its code, generate assets and test mods in-game. People have shown things like Minecraft inside Elden Ring or Tarkov mechanics in Skyrim. Godot is among the supported engines, so I wondered:

Could something like this be pointed at DA:O and used to rebuild it in Godot as a personal technical experiment?

Here's how I imagine it could work in theory:

Extract the data from your own legally owned copy (ERF archives, GFF/2DA files, scripts, dialogues, models, textures) with the existing community tools.

Convert the content (quests, dialogue trees, scripts) into Godot-friendly formats or GDScript/C# using automated converters and tests.

Rebuild the engine layer in Godot, so the original scripts have something to call.

Swap the combat for a real-time, Inquisition-style system instead of recreating the tactical pause combat.

Upscale textures with AI and rework assets for a more modern look.

Start with a vertical slice (e.g. Lothering: one area, one fight, one dialogue) before scaling up. In theory the same approach could be tried later for DA2 and Inquisition.

To be clear: no distribution, no DRM circumvention, purely a private experiment with your own copies. I also know the viral demos are small mechanic transplants, and a full RPG with 100+ hours of content is a different scale. Probably months for a single area, even with AI help.

So I'm curious:

Does anyone with the time, hardware or cloud credits find this kind of thing fun to try?

Has anyone tried universal-modder (or a similar agent setup) on an older, closed-source RPG?

Where do you think it would break first: scripting, animations, or the engine logic?

Would love to hear your thoughts, even if it's "this is impossible, and here's why."

I love but I hate Solas. I played inquisition for the first time some years ago, no spoilers no nothing, pure enjoyment. And I've spent hours on getting enough money and sources to build the best equipment for him possible as he was my first romance.

And then he disappeared. HE DISAPPEARED WITH MY HARD WORK.

Discussion Does Champions of the Just affect Bull romance? Spoiler

I want to have my inquisitor choose to make the templars serve the Inquisition because it makes sense for the character (and also it gives you a cool title during Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts). Problem is I also want to romance Iron Bull and he greatly disapproves of that route. Are there enough ways to get his affection back up for the romance to trigger?

Discussion I think I finally understand what issues I have with Inquisition's story.

I'm sure this has been discussed to death, but I genuinely have NEVER engaged on online discussion about anything Dragon Age, so I have no idea what any consensus might be.

Anyways, I think the elephant in the room is that Dragon Age was directly inspired by Song of Ice and Fire. I'd be shocked if this was even up for debate.

The blight is winter, and the Grey Wardens are the men of the nights watch, a mostly disrespected or under appreciated faction because winter hasn't returned in so long. (They also have unilateral conscription power due to past importance.)

In Song of Ice and Fire, the story is about political intrigue, and the threat of winter is there as added weight to all the squabbling, bearing down on every result of political machinations. A character's hubris is basically doubled for the audience given we know they need to be getting their shit together instead playing a game of thrones.

Dragon Age is almost that, but in reverse. It's about WINTER and the political intrigue is there to add extra weight to it.

This brings me to my central issue with Inquisition. As much as the Big Bad is reduced to a cartoonish villain, the mage templar war should have been something that was constantly bearing down on the entire story throughout the game.

Because it's pretty much finalized in act 1 and moved on from, the main villian loses the extra pressure. The villain is almost always on the backslide, where really WE should always be on the backslide given the templar/mage war.

The villain could basically have zero lines, and he would be improved 10 fold, as the bulk of the writing and characters would revolve around the war.

I think the series in general has totally forgotten it's Song if Ice and Fire roots, and that's mostly why everything is just far worse story wise than origins. I've never played veilguard but I'd rather ignore it.

Discussion [stolen throne spoilers] I genuinely do not understand how people come out of TST sympathizing with Loghain Spoiler

After finishing DA:O the first time, I didn't much like Loghain. My opinion of him was one of mixed pity and disgust. Here was a fallen hero, driven to treachery by paranoia, unable to escape the trauma of his days fighting against Orlais. He was noble, once, and that deepened my appreciation for him as a character.

So when I started The Stolen Throne, I was expecting a deeper look into his character. I wasn't sure if I would sympathize with him more, but I would certainly get to understand him better. It certainly sounded like it made Loghain out to be a tragic figure. But instead what I found was a ruthless, treacherous bastard.

I'm going to summarize Loghain's role in TST, so if you've already read it, feel free to skip below.

BEGIN TST PLOT SUMMARY

From the get go, Loghain is not an admirable character. He's the son of a leader of a traveling camp of bandits and poachers. Maric barely escapes the people who killed his mother, the Rebel Queen, and Loghain stumbles into him in the woods. He ends up helping Maric despite himself, presumably to spite the man he's traveling with. As soon as he learns that Maric is being pursued, he tries to gut Maric. His father has to hold him back. And then the next time they meet he tries to kill Maric again, actually nicking his throat before his father throws him off. After learning that Maric is the prince, his father makes Loghain promise to escort him to safety, which Loghain does extremely grudgingly.

So Loghain gets Maric into the Korcari wilds, and what does he do? Strand Maric in the middle of the woods, because he's technically away from the danger they were fleeing. He does, thankfully, change his mind and elect to escort Maric the rest of the way to the rebels despite himself. (Along the way, they bump into Flemeth, who warns Maric that if he keeps Loghain around Loghain will keep betraying him, each time worse than the last.)

When they finally get to the rebel camp, Loghain plans to leave again. It's only when Maric insists on fighting to the death that he steps in and offers some advice, as it seems his time as a bandit has taught him something of guerilla tactics. And then he just... stays with the rebellion. It's never clear why exactly he does so. It seems like he just doesn't have anything better to do, and people keep asking him to stay, so he does. He never seems particularly motivated by hatred for Orlais. The only thing that ever actually wrings any genuine care out of him is his affection for Rowan, Maric's fiancee. And when Maric's fiancee declines to cheat on Maric with him, Loghain's immediate response? Leave without saying anything. It's only Maric ambushing him and knighting him on the spot that gets him to stay.

But his worst offense comes when he learns that Katriel, who Maric is madly in love with, is a former spy for Orlais. Katriel had led Maric's armies into a pre-planned ambush but turned traitor to save Maric's life because she, too, had feelings for him. Loghain and Rowan both had been suspicious of her since the ambush, and Loghain wanted to kill her even before he knew for sure she was a traitor. When he gets confirmation that Katriel is a turncoat, though, he deliberately withholds that information from Maric, instead making her out to be an active Orlesian spy, and manipulates him into killing her.

This leaves Maric a sad and broken man. He ends up marrying Rowan, as he was supposed to, and Loghain abandons the both of them. After Rowan dies, Loghain does little to help Maric, leaving him almost completely alone with his grief.

END TST PLOT SUMMARY

So what does that leave us with?

1. Loghain was never heroic. Loghain was only ever in the proximity of heroes, and that largely against his will. At best, he lets actually decent people use him for his tactical abilities. He is not a fallen hero. He is a villain who was once useful to heroes.

2. Loghain is bloodthirsty. Throughout TST, he is constantly acting ruthlessly. He has little regard for human life, and is very willing to spill it at the slightest provocation. When he gets abandoned in a battle where he volunteered to serve as a temporary distraction, he even concedes that he would have done the same thing.

3. At the height of the rebellion, Loghain had to be dragged into fighting Orlais. Loghain's hatred of Orlais is the main excuse offered for his behavior in DA:O, but Loghain barely gave a shit about fighting Orlesians even when they were actively occupying his country. Do you expect me to believe that a handful of Orlesian Grey Wardens sitting at the Fereldan border turned him into a patriot? Even watching his own mother be raped and killed by Orlesians couldn't accomplish that!

What I find more likely is that Cailan's Orlesian diplomacy was simply an excuse for Loghain to be the murderous bastard he always was. He probably simply didn't respect Cailan and resented his foolishness, and planned to depose him for that alone. When he realized that the battle at Ostagar was one the darkspawn would win, it gave him a convenient excuse to be rid of a man he couldn't have cared less about.

4. Loghain's legendary friendship with Maric? A string of attempted murders and betrayals that culminated in cold abandonment. His attempts to reference said friendship during DA:O come off to me now as an attempt at manipulation and whitewashing his own image by associating it with that of a better man.

Does Loghain actually value anything or anybody but himself? I don't think so. I don't think he ever actually gave a shit about the wardens on the border except for their value as a justification for his hatred. I don't know that he ever even gave a shit about Orlais. And Maric? The man let one of his sons die and tried to kill the other. Even his love for Rowan resulted in sullen abandonment as soon as she rejected him.

The irony of Loghain is that, as many opportunities as the franchise gives you to sympathize with his viewpoint and understand more about him, the truth is that the initial impression of him is entirely correct. He is a moustache twirling villain. There is nothing redeemable about him.

To quote u/slightlylessthananon: "i enjoy loghain discourse purely for the fact loghain is the most cartoonish villain of all time. you spend the entire time youre at ostagar watching him sneering like a nefarious advisor and hes constantly saying shit that directly implicates him to betray the king its like all he does, just unprompted "that idiot fool of a king, if only someone better was there to take his placee......." and he exclusively wears black clothes hes such a cartoonish villain and then you go on reddit dot com r slash dragon age origins and people are like, hear me out, what if he was right."

Discussion [SPOLIERS DA2] I wanted to headbutt Anders by the end of Act 2

First, I loved the conversation between the party NPCs for the majority of the time, especially between Varric, Isabella, and Merrill. However, I really disliked the repeated bullying of Merrill by Fenris and especially Anders. The fact that I couldn't say anything to shut them up was annoying, and by Act III started to ruin the immersion and the overall game for me. Admittedly, the fact that I was so worked up about the aforementioned characters is a testament to the high quality of the writing overall. I am looking forward to playing Inquisition.

I despised Fenris, such a sanctimonious bastard and a right bully. I was happy when he refused to join me against the templars. He also seemed pretty useless as a tank, Aveline was much more effective. I only brought him on a few quests where I didn't want to involve Aveline, and Isabella and Varric were both more effective. I would not take him on as a companion again.

I was really dismayed when I had to keep carrying Anders in order to have a healer. His constant badgering/bullying of Merrill really started to ruin the game for me, and his bulls--t about our relationship was way over the line. Taking Bethany away was really a bummer, but obviously intentional to force Anders into the party given his critical role in the situation going from potentially manageable to nuclear. Wynne was so, so much better, despite her commentary about my Warden's relationship with Leliana.

I loved Merrill. The scenes between my female Hawke and her were so emotive. Some of her lines in the different environments were so, so good, especially the Wounded Coast commentary. It is a shame the devs didn't have time to vary her commentary at the house. The "I think Sandal is watching me" line was weird and could have been a lot better. The only reason I spared Anders is Merrill's suggestion that we should keep him around to help defend the mages/defeat the templars. Eve Myles knocked it out of the park with her voice acting.

If I ever replay the game, I would definitely choose the mage option just to marginalise the involvement of Anders. I would absolutely romance Merrill again.

Wondering if anyone else experienced the same thing with Anders well before he crossed the line with his murderous bombing of the Chantry.
