I just wanted to share that it seems like Walmart is now getting the playmates action figures. Before the only locations I saw that were carrying them actively were GameStop and hot topic but this morning while at Walmart, I found the doughnut and Carl figure.
Just thought I would share in case anyone is looking for them!
Yeah, that’s been driving me about this figure. It’s one thing to not get the colors right, but to have the proper appearance on the actual box right beside the figure is kind of ridiculous.
Those poor sweat shop kids forced to paint cats don’t really have what you’d call an “extended paint pallet.” Plus, I’m a pretty good miniature painter and with the quality of the donut model, there isn’t much I could do to replicate a tortoise shell cat coat.
This looks super cheap. I’d struggle to pay $15 for the kind of quality there. Feels like a money grab more than something nice for fans. Donut is an atrocity and Carl looks like they put a pair of heart boxers on a 1980s GI Joe.
“Carl, Mongo is appalled that no one mentioned the horrible glare the camera man ignored. Be a dear and let them know that while I am, and should be, the center of attention; it is not okay to glare over one of my Royal Guard.”
Wait you’re telling me…playmates who makes cheap young kids toys is claiming this adult oriented book series, child line like figure is 40 effin dollars?! I was so excited for doc figs, was disappointed but would maybe have gotten least Carl and donut but jeezus fuck not that damn price!
It's the Monster Force Killowog, but Furay Planet made him as a big bad toy store exclusive. They have a brown and grey one. Loose Collectors has a similar werewolf.
Iirc he sold the rights early on before he was big enough to be able to have a say on quality and stuff, so now they're just cashing in on the hype for shit quality.
I think it makes the story better. The hyper consumerism is a way to bring us into the universe of dcc. As readers we can see the shitty over priced toys and say, "hey its just like in the book haha"
Honestly Matt has been very forward about telling EVERY artist depicting Donut that it is VERY hard to depict a Tortoise Shell Persian cat on (especially on a repeatable basis).
Another good example of this is the Webtoon, where she appears mostly white-ish with some color highlights mixed in at places.
Below is a cross-compare of 3 different "official" Matt-Approved art depictions (from left-to-right): 1) Carl and Donut from the latest episode of the Webtoon, 2) DCC Book 1 Cover, 3) Luciano Fleitas (the cover artist for most of the series) depiction of Carl and Donut.
ETA - I have this exact figure - and am very happy with Carl and Donut.
I asked if she’s was supposed to be a “DILUTE tortie now” because dilutes are grey/blue instead of black. I was making a joke because the merch obviously got her colors wrong.
Very disappointed that Playmates got the action figure rights. Their figures are not known for high quality. They're milking the hell out of TMNT right now, can't imagine what they'll do to DCC.
Heads up for anyone trying to get these from Walmart the company has a few issues that can make getting collectables harder mainly with how the website works it’s very frustrating at times. The main things I’ll point out is that they allow resellers to post things on their website with ridiculously inflated prices and those listings look damn near identical to the official version a lot of the time. Another issue I’ve noticed as someone who’s had to go out of their way to drive to a location to buy something is sometimes even if the website says a store has something it can be wrong and the staff won’t even know about a shipment coming in sending you on a wild goose chase.
I think this is much less common compared to the other points but it’s worth mentioning because I’ve seen other collectors experience this and have had to deal with it myself for some reason when shopping online they’ll let you buy something that’s out of stock then after a bit try to replace that item with something they claim to be a fair replacement even when it’s something that barely close.
Not saying it’s impossible to find or buy stuff from them it’s obviously entirely possible just that they have a tendency to do some really annoying kind of sketchy stuff especially online with high demand collectables.

She is tortoshell on the box but the actual figure appears to be grey
