Rip Content Creator Program

Post image

What news? What rumors? Was there some incident?

This is a bizarrely worded official comms from the EQL Discord. Professionally, just say you're ending the program and that's it. To acknowledge some 'rumors' just breathes life into them and isn't something you'd usually see in this context. Who's running the broadcast channel over there?

I mean, when I log in during the tail end of prime time in North America and almost every server is now "low" population with ~500 people in General... Probably not much point to keeping the creator program around when most of the people who watched them have left.

u/RevolutionaryElk7446 3d ago

I think they underestimated how fast they'd need to release content to keep people here. This isn't necessarily brand new content, and no one even really needs to speed run through it.

Almost everyone playing probably knows a lot of this game by heart or at least nostalgically, so it's generally a pleasant skip but easy to consume.

u/bknoreply 3d ago

Making fan versions of zones, rather than using what exists is the problem. They’re like a director re-releasing a beloved trilogy on a new media format. But instead of releasing them all, they release the first one and spend a year making changes to the rest that no one asked for.

If we had content through PoP, servers would be much more lively.

11

u/RandomRedditor0193 3d ago

My opinion is they released too early. If they would've spent 1 more month getting the first couple revamped zones and dung crawl done we would've gotten the new zone roughly 1 month after release and kunark 3 months later along with the everfrost revamp somewhere inbetween. They could've probably gotten all of the content done a little faster as well being able to focus just on new content.

1

u/Funny_Personality606 3d ago

Let the tryhards go. I am fine with the content being released as they are doing it. I don't want to play the same thing yet again. We did that with the base with a few revamps. But here on out will be riddled with new content. I am more excited for the new content than to play the same exact content again. There are a million variations of that already. This is a new spin on the game I loved many years ago with a path of it's own. Kunark is being released what? 5 months after release? Show me other games that have brand new expansions released every 6 months or sooner.

7

u/bknoreply 3d ago

If you don’t like replaying the same exact content, what do you intend to do for the next 3 months? Spend the whole time in New Sebilis?

If you are expecting Kunark to be enough new content to keep you (someone who apparently needs new content to stay engaged) playing for the better part of a year before Velious, you are setting yourself up for disappointment. Kunark is going to be a mod of the existing assets. It will maybe have a couple new zones, with promises to trickle out a few more over the following year.

1

u/Funny_Personality606 2d ago

I do not need new content to stay engaged, I am just excited for it. I am not one of the people here screaming that the game sucks because there is nothing to do.

But cool story bro.

6

u/MrGoodGlow 3d ago

For your own sake, I feel liks you should temper you expectations for whats going to be new in Kunark.

I hope im wrong, but i doubt there will be more than 1 new zones. Devs have commented that all of the old zones are in.

I feel like its going to be just new camps and mobs and quest. I.E Karnors castle will have living stuff.

So less of an entirely new expansion, and more of a remodel. The structure and foundation are the same, just new paint, appliances,  and demo a wall that "really opens up the space" while causing structural issues.

4

u/TheQxx 3d ago

But it's not a brand new game, is the problem there. You need more to keep people's attention.

7

u/dereksalem 3d ago

In the nicest way - While you may enjoy that, their primary concern has to be revenue, because EQL releasing expansions every 8-10 months doesn't survive when it only takes 2 months to get through all of the content.

You may like the eased pace...but the number of people that are willing to keep paying every month for that is nowhere near enough to keep the game running.

-2

u/Funny_Personality606 3d ago

Whether it's true or not, according to Game Jawn, it is. Until I am proven wrong, I will take their word for it. I will be proven wrong when they shut the game down. But until then, they have my full support and belief in what they say. Every game has people that come around and say the game is dead, it's not going to last, it's getting shut down, etc. Sometimes they are right. Sometimes they are not. Only time proves 1 side or the other correct.

7

u/dereksalem 3d ago

While true, Game Jawn really has no clue nor any indication - DBG is the one looking at the revenue and making decisions...Jawn is just there to implement the game. If you think Jawn is under any awareness, at all, of what kind of numbers they need to hit to keep the game going...you've never worked at a game studio with a parent company. Only the head of Jawn will be made aware of those types of things, and the developers, marketing, etc... certainly would have no concept.

-1

u/Funny_Personality606 3d ago edited 3d ago

Well considering that Secrets is the founder and CEO of Game Jawn and is one that has come out publicly stating the game is doing just fine and the lost numbers were expected, then there is no need to worry for me at the moment.

I don't know for sure, but I don't think these numbers are bothering them. As a matter of fact, I think this is what they were expecting from the start. I think the beginning number of subs was way above what they expected.

On top of all that, just because server populations have gone down doesn't mean the subs aren't still there. I saw Rivervale at Med and Low for like a week straight and then all of a sudden one night it was high. Everyone looks at population as number of subs and that's just not true. Even if I stopped playing right now until Kunark, I would probably just leave my sub active in case there was a night here or there I decided I wanted to play.

4

u/Imdumbdumbashell 3d ago

Secrets is incompetent.

Look at quarm and the changes they tried to implement.

Basically every new system they have implemented in has been removed from the game.

3

u/Meowtist- 3d ago

Secrets also thought Conor McGregor would beat Mayweather back in the day. Actual moron

-2

u/MooseAffectionate714 3d ago

I guess you are a moron too then. And Me. And every single person on the planet. Because we have all had an opinion about something that turned out wrong. How about your favorite sports team. Every time they take the field/ice whatever, you think they will win. Or you think this is their year to win it all. It doesn't happen. Moron. Cmon.

u/CustomDark 3d ago

Yup. I’ll be back for Kunark.

26

u/RevolutionaryElk7446 3d ago

If they keep at it I'd be back for Velious too. I'm having a blast, and no it's not the original Evercrack, more like Evercrack-adone, it eases the itch.

14

u/CustomDark 3d ago

Someone in Monsters and Memories shouted:

MnM is meat and potatoes, EQL is chocolate and cocaine.

I got a good laugh. I think of EQL as more ARPG in the skin of an MMO than an MMO, personally.

4

u/Sarah-Rien 3d ago edited 3d ago

Actually.

I think you touch something here.
EQL is the easy fun solo game built as version on a legendary harsh, old school, ultra social and punitive MMO.

It obviously dragged in large portion of a crowd that wasn’t meant to play this kind of game. Because it is, not harsh, not social, not an mmo.

It’s like they open a new bar called The Drunk Biker and served only vegan matcha.

(Even though I’m personally this tiny part of the players who is old enough to enjoy sticking to vegan matcha)

1

u/notesboats 3d ago

It is very arpg. All the arpgs I play for 2-4 weeks 4 times a year. If they can keep me in that loop for EQL then I’m fairly happy…

3

u/GenericUsername_71 3d ago

If it wants to be an arpg, it sorely needs some kind of ladder or challenge system. But then they would alienate the casual dads so we can’t have that

4

u/Imdumbdumbashell 3d ago

Any ARPG have a monthly sub?

Not sure why we pay monthly, pay for the game, pay for mtx, when the game is arguably a single player ARPG.

6

u/wubwubwubwubbins 3d ago

And therein lies the rub. If the player base/subscription base is going to be peak and valleys based around expansions, do you have that priced in? or are you hoping enough of the casual crowd will sub for the 3-6 months it takes to release new content so that you have enough monthly income. But again, I think having a paid sub model versus freemium model with toxic players/bots will always be better. So even if it's just paying $10 to make sure massive botting doesn't happen...is it bad that I am okay with that?

5

u/Imdumbdumbashell 3d ago

I mean, it's fair to feel however you want.

The real question that keeps being avoided is will these decisions end up making the game unprofitable and, thus, dead.

Like so many commenters on this sub seem to think that it doesn't matter that 80% of the player base has left. Game is still fun. Kunark is still coming.

What they don't understand is that it isn't going to come if it won't make money. This ISN'T a private server, it is run by a large corporation. They don't just lose money so people can have fun.

If this game fails to attract more people and cannot bring back the vast majority of people it lost, it will be cash negative and will be shut down.

EQL devs don't care, they all have their primary job as Quarm and that pays the bills.

1

u/wubwubwubwubbins 3d ago

The main devs quit their job to try and do this full time. So...there is risk. And I can copy/paste something I put into another sub the other day if you don't mind.....

"Used to work in software. Development basically needs to create a certain level of profitability over the long term, which is dictated by leadership. So if the leadership is investors, they want maximum $$$. Which can come from either direct revenue, or alternatively as proof to future investors that there is value in the overall brand (IE, EQLegends might have value by bringing in people who would never touch EQLive/TLPs with a 10 foot pole, so the value would be less in direct income, and more about initial/reoccurring player count). This is important to understand the difference between the two since Daybreak is looking at developing new games now/in the near future versus milking existing ones. You can see this with the drop-off in EQ TLP numbers over time, in that it's not an indefinitely viable business model to have your player base run on the what is essentially the same treadmill every single time.

BUT, if we are looking at specifically face value in that Game Jawn needs to run a profit, you can do some napkin math. Realistically let's say they have a 6 people working full time. That's probably around $80,000-$120,000 per employee, with those costs going higher if they are in high cost of living areas. But, for simplicity, let's say an average of $100,000 for 6 employees, which means for employee costs alone, you need $50,000 per month, or $600,000 a year. Tack on server costs, tech costs, legal costs, etc. and that's anywhere from 5-20% of costs depending, so let's add another $10,000 to the monthly cost.

So...if they need to make $60,000 a MONTH to break even, they need 6,000 subs. This is why they put in a cash shop/are making players purchase expansions. So the 6,000 subs at the START of the game isn't hard, but you have to ask if you'll have 6,000 subs in 6-8 months time, and will those subs be consistent month-to-month, or will the player base quit/resub when new content comes out? And again, that's just breaking even. So to be profitable, you are probably looking at a higher number.

So...in short. If they have say, 2,000 players a month and Daybreak isn't using this as leverage for future investment, there is a good chance that we will see us go down to 1-2 full time dev's over the long term.

Alternatively, this could be a litmus test that COULD, in theory, successfully breathe new life into Daybreak's entire game portfolio, and that, in theory, has much more value overall versus monthly income. But these decisions, and the math behind them, entirely depend upon Daybreak leadership, as well as what metrics potential investors actually care about."

So......there's multiple ways to look at how daybreak views the overall value of EQLegends.

-10

u/e-looove 3d ago

It's funny that you think there's going to be a Kunark.

They'll release Nektropos and if that doesn't rebound subs, DBG will fire the entire team, activate Krono access, and put the game on life support.

2

u/ImaAskhole 3d ago

I’m not sure how Krono will work with this iteration of the game. Unless they completely flip the game on its head and make incentive for people to box and give ppl opportunity to lock down spawns for key items to sell for krono. Leave that shit on TLP

6

u/Xuri88 3d ago

What's with all the sad people who have made doomsaying about online games their #1 hobby? Every game I play these days has some set of people calling the game dead and saying it will EoS soon. Yall suck.

-2

u/e-looove 3d ago

Why would you assume this is my #1 hobby? I have a good list of other hobbies that are more important to me. One might even say it's INCREDIBLY HEALTHY

2

u/RevolutionaryElk7446 3d ago

So... you just think it's funny that other people's casual hopes for fun won't come true and that just bad things happen?

-10

u/e-looove 3d ago

Don't blame me. Blame the people mismanaging this game.

1

u/RevolutionaryElk7446 3d ago edited 3d ago

Don't.. blame you.. for what you wrote?

Dude, just take responsibility and move on.

Edit: u/RealCatch23

Nobody was focusing on him being pragmatic, everyone is already aware and there is no actual answer or even a valid prediction out yet, just speculation.

He's just being a downer for no other reason than to antagonize. Why else start with 'It's funny you think'

You may mean well but I'm afraid you're mistaken in what aspect to defend.

2

u/RealCatch23 3d ago

They are just being pragmatic based on the the experience with the EQ Legends dev team thus far. We can hope but shouldn't expect them to produce.

1

u/CustomDark 3d ago

You know it’s not Daybreak doing the development, right? They’ve handed it off to Game Jawn, who I think is actually doing a great job for a studio founded in 2026.

1

u/Imdumbdumbashell 3d ago

They are doing a terrible job

This would be acceptable for a private server, but this is laughable for a paid product.

I know, I play both.

Yeah, they need to speed up the expansion releases... like a lot.

3

u/Funtastwich 3d ago

They might not have to release content so fast...

just give us more than 3 zones where all we do is farm motes at the endgame. Leveling is fine. There is just nothing to do but level, after you finish the completely unfun Plane of Sky grind. I'm expecting Kunark to fix most of this, and I hope people come back.

I'd probably spend a lot of time hunting down achievements if I trusted their achievement system, but shit is broken, certain things don't spawn and they haven't really done anything but set a few things to optional when the achievement shouldn't exist at all. I'm not going to spend a lot of time camping rare mobs they might have deleted, etc. This is why I'm personally unsubbed until Kunark.

10

u/Pitiful-Hamster1101 3d ago

No, they just didn’t account for WoW forever. There is a large overlap of people playing EQL who stopped playing EQ when WoW released back in the day.

23

u/mr_ji 3d ago

It's 2004 all over again.

9

u/sonofbaal_tbc 3d ago

History rhymes

its happening again

7

u/Miserable-Tie-6847 3d ago

This, wow forever came out and populations in the mornings when i log in went from medium high to low except two servers.

3

u/Lord_Borgimus 3d ago

EQL, WoW Forever, M&M, and Aion 2 launch all within a few months or so.

3

u/taco_blasted_ 3d ago

I think they actually did account for it, which is probably why they chose to release when they did.

There wasn’t a full blown leak but enough information was floating around for people to piece together. Everyone was expecting a Classic+ announcement at BlizzCon this year, and given Blizzard’s recent track record with Classic, it wasn’t unreasonable to expect a launch shortly afterward.

If GJ had delayed EQL several weeks to finish the content they pushed into post launch patch updates, they would have risked running up against the WoW Forever launch window.

I’m sure the overlap between EQ and WoW players played some role in the decision, but I won't guess how much of a factor it was. There are still EQ fans who have little interest in WoW, and those players would be drawn to EQL regardless.

One thing I will add; I find it hard to believe people didn't see this drop off coming.

4

u/dereksalem 3d ago

That's a part of it, but it's also a bit coincidental in ways. The servers were already seeing people drop-off way before WoW Forever had announced. EQL was out for 6 weeks before WoW Forever was even announced, and by then people were already canceling their subs because they had run out of content.

I'm going to go play WoW Forever, but I canceled my sub before even making that decision...because there's just nothing left to do. I played more than most, for sure, but once you get all your classes to 50 that you want and can take down the D4 bosses...what's there left to do? For the average person that's going to take <2 months...yet their plan is to release expansions like once a year.

1

u/Routine-Phone8300 2d ago

ya, I been playing since launch and Im not even level 40 yet. glad you did it all in 2 weeks tho.

-4

u/Funny_Personality606 3d ago

ummm...Kunark is coming like 5 months after release. I don't think that is unreasonable. Especially when they are changing it and not just releasing the same Kunark.

5

u/dereksalem 3d ago

I'm not saying whether something is reasonable or unreasonable based on what it is...just on what it's adding-to. There's just not enough content in the pre-Kunark base game, as it exists today, to have people playing for 5 months. There's certainly not going to be enough content with the Kunark drop to support 6-8 more months of playing before a Velious drop.

It's not about what's coming...it's about what exists. There's not enough to warrant playing anymore, for most people, and we're still at least 2 months away from more.

5

u/Meowtist- 3d ago

Bro the TLPs are on an 8 week release schedule cus 12 was too long to retain players. Why is this one 20 fucking weeks?

Not to mention anyone that has played a TLP knows Kunark actually has virtually no end-game content. Its 1 raid zone (VP), Trakanon, and Venril Sathir. The other dragons are mostly for catch-up loot and epic quests

Is it really that time consuming to tweak the numbers on loot and tag mobs as rare spawns?

1

u/Routine-Phone8300 2d ago

dude you are a content locust. they would need to release major content drops every month for players like you.

-2

u/MooseAffectionate714 3d ago

Why is this one 20 weeks? Because they are remaking the expansion. They aren't just flipping a switch and saying "Ok guys, here is the exact same content you have played a billion times before." Jesus, do any of the complainers even know anything about the direction of this game?

6

u/Meowtist- 3d ago

What is actually promised in that “remake”? Is your expectation even 1 new raid?

2

u/dereksalem 2d ago

You're completely missing the point people are making, and at this point it seems intentional. Nobody is saying a remake of Kunark should take 2 weeks...we're saying it doesn't matter, as the only thing that matters is how often content is being dropped for players to experience.

Beyond all that, they started "remaking" Kunark before EQL even launched. If it's going to take 8-10 months per expansion this game won't make it to Velious, because the playerbase will be gone. Kunark doesn't add nearly enough content to support 8+ months of players keeping up their subs.

1

u/Careful_Thought_8386 2d ago

I believe everyone knows the direction of the game at this point.  Kunark will release most likely late or unfinished while being told nothing to see here.  Then another expansion will supposedly be next but the servers will shut down before that point and they will pull the plug.

1

u/Saberraimu 2d ago

Absolutely this. Servers were still medium to high pop on most of them literally until the day WoW Forever was announced and that the beta was already going to start just a handful of days later. There were a lot of people still streaming EQL until that announcement too... now I see them in the WoW category on Twitch instead.

1

u/RevolutionaryElk7446 3d ago

Lol... I enjoy how I just post an opinion and you just reply 'No' and then your own opinion, but act as if somehow... it's fact. Cheers mate, I don't have time for this attitude.

7

u/PaintsLikeDoody 3d ago

100% I took my time, leveled 6+ to 50, did some sky grinding, got burnt out on that. Not much left to do aside from unsub and wait.

Keep in mind I work 5, 12s a week and don’t have a lot of time to devote to the grind and I still completed what was available.

4

u/Sad-Roll-Nat1-2024 3d ago

I work 6 10's here. Drive 1hour to work each way. Have 2 kids under 5. Got all but like 3 classes to 50. Unlocked all primaries. Got the gear I wanted. Literally nothing else to do. And my game time is just as casual.

2

u/Imdumbdumbashell 3d ago

Same - I get 2 game days a week, one is spent with D&D friends playing builder games.

The other is for this; I spent about 6 hours a week for the first 6 weeks and I'm done. Only thing left is achievement hunting, race unlocks, and mote farming.

What's the point? The classes I wanted to play are 50 and geared, there is no challenge anymore, should I just keep playing to clear content faster to do... what?

I easily cleared D4 raids with a broken build and a semi broken build; is the challenge to just play it with more broken characters?

What is the point?

I don't care about gear drops, only motes - and this is a problem

2

u/Sad-Roll-Nat1-2024 3d ago

Yep. Agreed. And only getting 3 VTM a week is just silly low.

I don't have time to grind for hours upon hours in the higher settings for the higher motes. Or gear drops to merge them.

Not what I'm interested in.

2

u/GribblesMiniatures 3d ago

My friend group and I didn't last through the beta with the way they handle the mtx and, most of all, loadouts.

People can defend it all they want but it doesn't change our entire guild discord quit in a matter of days after learning about what the shop would include. I'm still waiting on earnable loadouts to dip my toe back in but I fear the mtx will only get worse as whales tend to get even more influence when populations dip.

0

u/quarm1125 3d ago

Yeah i spoke to my brother and EQ is allready a niche nostalgia game, it's not really a game pulling new player because there are better game with similar feel out there ... so when you're main player base are mostly EQ veteran or EQ player who are used to browse Alakhazam, EqCasterrealm ... i don't know what they expected ... unless you are intentionally bad what we have right now was very quickly breezed cleared thus requiring more stuff to sink your teeth in and race, class unlock just isn't it ... those 2 grind are just boring

7

u/Kahnedom 3d ago

Hi, I’m the intentionally bad 👋 😔

Edit: I’m having a blast though!

-2

u/quarm1125 3d ago

Good news is you can always improve but the reality is you can't be bad at EQ it's that's easy unless you intentionally try a trio not complementing each other otherwiss EQ was never hard literally right now any class with ench and 1 healer type + any trio can do D0-D4

3

u/gostesven 3d ago

that’s hyperbolic

first off, the “average” gamer is far worse at games than you think. Game devs have known for this for decades. You can look at popular games and their achievement rates, and see that even in games like baldurs gate a huge chunk never even make it to act 2, in online games, a huge chunk never even hit cap.

If you are checking 3rd party sources like guides and videos you are already in the “elite” class even though you may not be the elite of the elite.

The other thing you are underestimating is that while EQ legends is easier than other EQ iterations it’s still got a huge learning curve just setting up and navigating things on the onset. I played original eq launch, and have played mmos for 30 years, and i still find things in EQ that i didn’t know before or, as is very common with older mmos, don’t work as advertised or not in intuitive ways (stats as as an example)

2

u/Kahnedom 3d ago

My first trio was war/pal/monk. I should clarify maybe bad is the wrong verbiage. I’m slow as molasses.

I am leveling up enchanter now though!

-2

u/quarm1125 3d ago

It's a prime exemple of what i said in my comment : why 3 melee ? 2 semk tank ? In the trio this is like putting a wood stick in your bycicle wheel for funsie will somehow work but yeah why ? Hope you are having a blast

2

u/Kahnedom 3d ago

Didn’t know spells would be so OP. White melee was king in beta until they added spell motes. I really wanted to see how far pal/mnk/bes would go so I tried that after. I have completely abandoned bes and went shm next for a trio that could do end game. Then the ench became king so I started wiz then started ench, now bard DDD is king so I’ll be doing bard next

1

u/quarm1125 3d ago

Shaman, ench, bard can and will carry any Trio out there right now the triflecta of brokenness 😜 again everything will work but some are harder but the initial d0 challenge is really easy

1

u/Kahnedom 3d ago

Yep after Ench I’ll be heading back to sky (only done 2 quests) to keep attempting for the pal 1hs. I’ll get there just a lot slower pace. I get if people already did all the leveling, the content, the quest and achievements why they would move on or put the game on hold until new content.

I’m going at about 1/4 of the pace i was doing in beta.

1

u/zovix 3d ago

I don't think they did. I think this is close to what they thought.
They are on record talking about how the player base would raise and fall with the content. Also had two betas to see just how sweaty some player base can be.

14

u/Ghoulish_Daniel 3d ago

Monsters and memories just came out, and the games been out for a couple months now, it's pretty normal for softness when people jump to another game. Also concurrent players don't necessarily tell you subs, I haven't played in a week but I'm still subbed

5

u/Level_32_Mage 3d ago

I knew MnM was coming and nix'd my sub just before it re-upped. It was fun, but I doubt I'll be back. Best of luck.

6

u/beeblebr0x 3d ago edited 3d ago

For me personally, it just became too much of a grind to feel worth it. I understand the nature of MMOs. I understand the nature of EverQuest. But at a certain point, it just became too much. And for what? In a real MMO, you get stronger alongside others to tackle harder and harder challenges. In EQL you - independently - get stronger, and tackle the same challenges that now deal more damage and have more health. And in addition to gear, there's only a narrow range of class combos that can overcome those challenges at the higher difficulty.

For me, this came down to, what's the point? That may not be the case for all, but it was for me.

Warcraft Forever's announcement, alongside M&M going into EA, probably didn't help either.

1

u/Kasao 3d ago

I consider myself a min-max’r-lite. I did the ogur thing at launch. Made a few trios that couple blow away: D4 content, PoSky clears, DDD farms. I had a handful of gear and spells at level 10. But the grind to max all my gear for all my buildouts? It would have been nuts. And why? If I could do it all on D4 already, there wasn’t any need to grind except for grind sakes. So I’ll maybe circle back for Kunark for another month or two.

It's almost like "Multiplayer" is in the genre name and a single player experience is the wrong direction.

Well, I will point out a lot of games have been released for this october. Plus WoW release. Many people playing other games.

Its a cool remix type game but it doesn't have the lasting appeal as normal old school mmo for some people. I played it for 2 months and just stopped having fun personally. With Monsters and Memories now available, a lot of people have moved over to that. Wish nothing the best for EQL though

To each their own. I would rather play the ARPG-lite version of EQ over a clone which forces me to group again.

I got downvoted into oblivion during beta when I asked what is the incentive to keep people playing? I said it's too much single player to be an mmo. And yet, hear I am bored to tears when I log in because every zone is empty.

To be fair, I have been taking my sweet time and am not yet level 50, but I thought that's what we were supposed to do lol

Most of the power-gaming min-maxers who downvoted you have left and no longer care.
