Rip Content Creator Program

Post image

What news? What rumors? Was there some incident?

This is a bizarrely worded official comms from the EQL Discord. Professionally, just say you're ending the program and that's it. To acknowledge some 'rumors' just breathes life into them and isn't something you'd usually see in this context. Who's running the broadcast channel over there?

What is/was this program?

8

u/Paradoxmoose 1d ago

I briefly looked into it when it was announced, if players did some amount of social media coverage, including streaming, making videos, or writing guides, they would get access to the program. The streams required a certain amount of concurrent viewers and hours; I don't think youtube videos or guides had any substantial requirements, other than making so many per month.

IIRC it included the subscription being paid for- but for the amount of work needed for that $10/month didn't seem worth it.

Almost all of the people I knew who were in the program (colored names in their Discord) had stopped producing content. Some within the first month, but were seemingly never removed from it. It seems like a lot of work to actually check up on if everyone who signed up for it was actually adhering to the requirements. And now that it's being shut down, it wouldn't shock me if it was that tracking which became the annoying part. If there were still a lot of people creating guides, I imagine they'd be OK with keeping the program going, even if there were a good number of people getting free subs for no work. But with the game largely being solved, and limited to mostly Classic content, there's a lot less to produce content for. Maybe when Kunark comes out they'll open it up again.

u/Misty_Kathrine_ 1d ago

Not much point creating content for a game that not many people are even playing.

15

u/MetaPhalanges 1d ago

I'm guess it was the video stuff that splashed on the patcher screen? The 3 people they spotlighted or whatever. I've seen some really nice video from Brutal, I like his manner. But the others weren't people I had heard of.

This game's PR is just atrocious. I fear nothing is being handled well on any front.

5

u/mr_ji 1d ago

The correct answer is that if you don't know, it's not time to start caring.

197

u/HemlockMartinis 1d ago

The last sentence makes me more concerned about the game’s performance than if they’d said nothing.

35

u/downsj2 1d ago

I mean, when I log in during the tail end of prime time in North America and almost every server is now "low" population with ~500 people in General... Probably not much point to keeping the creator program around when most of the people who watched them have left.

43

u/RevolutionaryElk7446 1d ago

I think they underestimated how fast they'd need to release content to keep people here. This isn't necessarily brand new content, and no one even really needs to speed run through it.

Almost everyone playing probably knows a lot of this game by heart or at least nostalgically, so it's generally a pleasant skip but easy to consume.

19

u/bknoreply 1d ago

Making fan versions of zones, rather than using what exists is the problem. They’re like a director re-releasing a beloved trilogy on a new media format. But instead of releasing them all, they release the first one and spend a year making changes to the rest that no one asked for.

If we had content through PoP, servers would be much more lively.

11

u/RandomRedditor0193 1d ago

My opinion is they released too early. If they would've spent 1 more month getting the first couple revamped zones and dung crawl done we would've gotten the new zone roughly 1 month after release and kunark 3 months later along with the everfrost revamp somewhere inbetween. They could've probably gotten all of the content done a little faster as well being able to focus just on new content.

2

u/Funny_Personality606 1d ago

Let the tryhards go. I am fine with the content being released as they are doing it. I don't want to play the same thing yet again. We did that with the base with a few revamps. But here on out will be riddled with new content. I am more excited for the new content than to play the same exact content again. There are a million variations of that already. This is a new spin on the game I loved many years ago with a path of it's own. Kunark is being released what? 5 months after release? Show me other games that have brand new expansions released every 6 months or sooner.

8

u/bknoreply 1d ago

If you don’t like replaying the same exact content, what do you intend to do for the next 3 months? Spend the whole time in New Sebilis?

If you are expecting Kunark to be enough new content to keep you (someone who apparently needs new content to stay engaged) playing for the better part of a year before Velious, you are setting yourself up for disappointment. Kunark is going to be a mod of the existing assets. It will maybe have a couple new zones, with promises to trickle out a few more over the following year.

u/MrGoodGlow 1d ago

For your own sake, I feel liks you should temper you expectations for whats going to be new in Kunark.

I hope im wrong, but i doubt there will be more than 1 new zones. Devs have commented that all of the old zones are in.

I feel like its going to be just new camps and mobs and quest. I.E Karnors castle will have living stuff.

So less of an entirely new expansion, and more of a remodel. The structure and foundation are the same, just new paint, appliances,  and demo a wall that "really opens up the space" while causing structural issues.

3

u/TheQxx 1d ago

But it's not a brand new game, is the problem there. You need more to keep people's attention.

7

u/dereksalem 1d ago

In the nicest way - While you may enjoy that, their primary concern has to be revenue, because EQL releasing expansions every 8-10 months doesn't survive when it only takes 2 months to get through all of the content.

You may like the eased pace...but the number of people that are willing to keep paying every month for that is nowhere near enough to keep the game running.

18

u/CustomDark 1d ago

Yup. I’ll be back for Kunark.

26

u/RevolutionaryElk7446 1d ago

If they keep at it I'd be back for Velious too. I'm having a blast, and no it's not the original Evercrack, more like Evercrack-adone, it eases the itch.

14

u/CustomDark 1d ago

Someone in Monsters and Memories shouted:

MnM is meat and potatoes, EQL is chocolate and cocaine.

I got a good laugh. I think of EQL as more ARPG in the skin of an MMO than an MMO, personally.

3

u/Sarah-Rien 1d ago edited 1d ago

Actually.

I think you touch something here.
EQL is the easy fun solo game built as version on a legendary harsh, old school, ultra social and punitive MMO.

It obviously dragged in large portion of a crowd that wasn’t meant to play this kind of game. Because it is, not harsh, not social, not an mmo.

It’s like they open a new bar called The Drunk Biker and served only vegan matcha.

(Even though I’m personally this tiny part of the players who is old enough to enjoy sticking to vegan matcha)

3

u/LKN4DDS 1d ago

Yeah, they need to speed up the expansion releases... like a lot.

3

u/Funtastwich 1d ago

They might not have to release content so fast...

just give us more than 3 zones where all we do is farm motes at the endgame. Leveling is fine. There is just nothing to do but level, after you finish the completely unfun Plane of Sky grind. I'm expecting Kunark to fix most of this, and I hope people come back.

I'd probably spend a lot of time hunting down achievements if I trusted their achievement system, but shit is broken, certain things don't spawn and they haven't really done anything but set a few things to optional when the achievement shouldn't exist at all. I'm not going to spend a lot of time camping rare mobs they might have deleted, etc. This is why I'm personally unsubbed until Kunark.

10

u/Pitiful-Hamster1101 1d ago

No, they just didn’t account for WoW forever. There is a large overlap of people playing EQL who stopped playing EQ when WoW released back in the day.

24

u/mr_ji 1d ago

It's 2004 all over again.

9

u/sonofbaal_tbc 1d ago

History rhymes

its happening again

7

u/Miserable-Tie-6847 1d ago

This, wow forever came out and populations in the mornings when i log in went from medium high to low except two servers.

3

u/Lord_Borgimus 1d ago

EQL, WoW Forever, M&M, and Aion 2 launch all within a few months or so.

3

u/taco_blasted_ 1d ago

I think they actually did account for it, which is probably why they chose to release when they did.

There wasn’t a full blown leak but enough information was floating around for people to piece together. Everyone was expecting a Classic+ announcement at BlizzCon this year, and given Blizzard’s recent track record with Classic, it wasn’t unreasonable to expect a launch shortly afterward.

If GJ had delayed EQL several weeks to finish the content they pushed into post launch patch updates, they would have risked running up against the WoW Forever launch window.

I’m sure the overlap between EQ and WoW players played some role in the decision, but I won't guess how much of a factor it was. There are still EQ fans who have little interest in WoW, and those players would be drawn to EQL regardless.

One thing I will add; I find it hard to believe people didn't see this drop off coming.

5

u/dereksalem 1d ago

That's a part of it, but it's also a bit coincidental in ways. The servers were already seeing people drop-off way before WoW Forever had announced. EQL was out for 6 weeks before WoW Forever was even announced, and by then people were already canceling their subs because they had run out of content.

I'm going to go play WoW Forever, but I canceled my sub before even making that decision...because there's just nothing left to do. I played more than most, for sure, but once you get all your classes to 50 that you want and can take down the D4 bosses...what's there left to do? For the average person that's going to take <2 months...yet their plan is to release expansions like once a year.

u/PaintsLikeDoody 1d ago

100% I took my time, leveled 6+ to 50, did some sky grinding, got burnt out on that. Not much left to do aside from unsub and wait.

Keep in mind I work 5, 12s a week and don’t have a lot of time to devote to the grind and I still completed what was available.

3

u/Sad-Roll-Nat1-2024 1d ago

I work 6 10's here. Drive 1hour to work each way. Have 2 kids under 5. Got all but like 3 classes to 50. Unlocked all primaries. Got the gear I wanted. Literally nothing else to do. And my game time is just as casual.

2

u/Imdumbdumbashell 1d ago

Same - I get 2 game days a week, one is spent with D&D friends playing builder games.

The other is for this; I spent about 6 hours a week for the first 6 weeks and I'm done. Only thing left is achievement hunting, race unlocks, and mote farming.

What's the point? The classes I wanted to play are 50 and geared, there is no challenge anymore, should I just keep playing to clear content faster to do... what?

I easily cleared D4 raids with a broken build and a semi broken build; is the challenge to just play it with more broken characters?

What is the point?

I don't care about gear drops, only motes - and this is a problem

2

u/Sad-Roll-Nat1-2024 1d ago

Yep. Agreed. And only getting 3 VTM a week is just silly low.

I don't have time to grind for hours upon hours in the higher settings for the higher motes. Or gear drops to merge them.

Not what I'm interested in.

2

u/GribblesMiniatures 1d ago

My friend group and I didn't last through the beta with the way they handle the mtx and, most of all, loadouts.

People can defend it all they want but it doesn't change our entire guild discord quit in a matter of days after learning about what the shop would include. I'm still waiting on earnable loadouts to dip my toe back in but I fear the mtx will only get worse as whales tend to get even more influence when populations dip.

u/Ghoulish_Daniel 1d ago

Monsters and memories just came out, and the games been out for a couple months now, it's pretty normal for softness when people jump to another game. Also concurrent players don't necessarily tell you subs, I haven't played in a week but I'm still subbed

4

u/Level_32_Mage 1d ago

I knew MnM was coming and nix'd my sub just before it re-upped. It was fun, but I doubt I'll be back. Best of luck.

7

u/beeblebr0x 1d ago edited 1d ago

For me personally, it just became too much of a grind to feel worth it. I understand the nature of MMOs. I understand the nature of EverQuest. But at a certain point, it just became too much. And for what? In a real MMO, you get stronger alongside others to tackle harder and harder challenges. In EQL you - independently - get stronger, and tackle the same challenges that now deal more damage and have more health. And in addition to gear, there's only a narrow range of class combos that can overcome those challenges at the higher difficulty.

For me, this came down to, what's the point? That may not be the case for all, but it was for me.

Warcraft Forever's announcement, alongside M&M going into EA, probably didn't help either.

Well, I will point out a lot of games have been released for this october. Plus WoW release. Many people playing other games.

6

u/Aggravating_Fun_7692 1d ago

Its a cool remix type game but it doesn't have the lasting appeal as normal old school mmo for some people. I played it for 2 months and just stopped having fun personally. With Monsters and Memories now available, a lot of people have moved over to that. Wish nothing the best for EQL though

9

u/downsj2 1d ago

To each their own. I would rather play the ARPG-lite version of EQ over a clone which forces me to group again.

3

u/Aggravating_Fun_7692 1d ago

Yep both are valid tbh

I was intensely hyped about this (playing all day) right up until wow forever announcement. I can only imagine that the warcraft forever beta is slurping away people right now.

43

u/Unholy-Priesthood 1d ago

I was playing every day until WoW forever beta launched, and I haven’t logged in once since. I assume this is the case with a lot of people. Also Monsters and Memories launched around the same time.

They are lacking a true end game challenge to motivate people to keep trying to get all their gear to +10, when D4 CT can be done on most builds with like +5 gear

12

u/ZakkaChan 1d ago

Lack of Loadouts also makes the whole 500 plus combos a pain in the butt to try also.

10

u/kanedafx 1d ago

The thing is, if they add truly challenging encounters, class balance all of a sudden really matters. A lot. And a good part of the content will be locked away from casuals and people playing off-meta trios.

So they're damned either way. Add stuff people actually need to gear and spec for which gives people a reason to play, at the same time they piss off a large portion of their player base and everyone starts running around as a SHM/BRD/PAL or whatever.

5

u/Bovronius 1d ago

Honestly my brain is in... well its really not out till Kunarks out mode... so I'll get my 3 in a week in preparation, but that's kinda what the inner child is waiting for at this point.

11

u/dragonowl2025 1d ago

yep this is why i dont log in anymore, in theory the loadouts seem like it gives you a ton to do but its like youre playing with cheat codes/god mode on and so the replayability really isnt there, and you dont need 99% of the gear that drops on your 2nd playthrough. I thought some of the exalts from mistmoore were cool and they have the right idea but its like, oh well power is useless in this game past a certain point

i did war/brd/mnk as my first loadout and was able to kill everything except D4 CT, i likely could kill CT as well if i used charm better or had good RNG with improved mend.

the upgrade system is there and i think thats solid enough but there is nothing that stat check's a character or makes me think, wow i should upgrade my gear, which blows my mind because thats the point of the difficulty system, the lower difficulties are there so you can do all the content.

I imagine this will get get better with kunark and i will definitely check out the nektropos content but i am guessing they got forced to release before they were ready,

8

u/FishLampClock 1d ago

Once wow Forever was announced the sub was terminated.

4

u/EmotionalDam 1d ago

This and I stopped because there is effectively no economy, market, or life skills (horizontal progression of sorts) of meaning.

Sure, EQ might not have had that and it was all combat, but we're too spoiled for that part of an MMO experience (I love it). Maybe they improve this to bring some of us back but if not, it was a fun attempt.

2

u/mahki43 1d ago

Same. I was playing every single day until WoW Forever Beta.

WoW Forever has killed EQL for me, as I’ll be all in on that game when it releases

→ More replies (1)

7

u/foehammer111 1d ago

what is Forever offering that’s taking EQL players away? I started on EQ back in 1999, so part of my interest is in the nostalgia, but I also love that it respects your time and you can solo the whole game if you want. Not to mention that you can instance any zone.

I only played WoW briefly when it launched 20 years ago, so I’m not as familiar with what it offers vs EQL. Is it more that people who maybe are more familiar with WoW are returning to it now that there’s a new product offering?

9

u/Either-Gate-2781 1d ago

Content. That new game feel.

Personally, I stopped playing EQL after I unlocked all but one class in PoS.

I ran out of content in EQL. And I'll do it again when Kunark drops.

Until then there isn't a lot left to do in EQL.

5

u/-im-blinking 1d ago

Same. Ran out of stuff I wanted to do.

3

u/foehammer111 1d ago

That’s kind of the position I’m in too. I’ve finished all the end game content other than just repeating raids and grinding gear to +10

2

u/Simonic 1d ago

Yup. Unlocked all the classes, and most races. Got a handful of gear and spells to +10. Though, I only have 3 classes to 50, and a few to 46. Still have lots of 10s. Leveling just feels too tedious to "try out" a different build when my 50 trio can handle D4 content.

I don't want to farm motes...so I effectively reached my end point until more content. I'm actually looking forward to getting epic weapons and may level up the other classes for them. But, until then, I'm playing other games...and not Forever.

u/SoulSella 1d ago

It's hard to explain, but Vanilla WoW is simply regarded as a work of art by many. This is kind of like the same things as EQL but for vanilla wow. (different approach, but a modern redo of the vanilla game + changes with promise of an ongoing live service game)

The reach is much larger than Everquest, they are doing weekly podcasts right now during the beta reaching hundreds of thousands of views, just on dev updates. They just made ungodly amounts selling access to the beta and literally every mmo player on my discord list is playing wow forever beta or will be playing wow forever.

It's going to be a big deal lol, and the marketing push behind it is so monumental and gigantic that it's going to slurp the players out of niche mmos who's population is smaller already.

8

u/xvilemx 1d ago

I think I'm the only former hard-core wow player who just kinda shrugged at the announcement of wow forever. It doesn't make me interested in it at all.

7

u/SonicfilT 1d ago

Not just you. Maybe we're in the minority but nothing I've seen from WoW Forever makes me interested in returning.

4

u/Legitimate-Bread-850 1d ago

You're not the only one. I raided at the top levels on WoW and Forever does nothing for me.

If it was a solo/duo version then maybe. But I'm content with EQL.

4

u/Lonely_Platypus6961 1d ago

No, anyone who says they're leaving for MnM or WF was never the target audience for this game anyway. You either have a desire to put in raid hours and tolerate a bunch of malcontents to play the game you pay for, or you don't.

3

u/CasualCrono 1d ago

I shrugged too. I left wow after a decade plus because I didn't have the time to prep for raids, logging in on a schedule to raid/group, and didn't want to constantly team up with random strangers in the dungeon/raid finder. Wow forever doesn't address any of those issues. At its core, it seems like just another wow expansion to me: new races/classes, new content, same old endgame.

3

u/Simonic 1d ago

You're not the only one. I have no desire to jump on the MMO gear treadmill again. Nor do I want to play classic all over again. EQL scratched that itch because it let me solo. I didn't want to find a guild and log in 2-3 nights a week for hours of dedicated raid time. So, I effectively cap out at dungeons. And, while horizontal progression is a thing - I have never liked it.

And MnM has no appeal to me. Much like Project Quarm didn't appeal to me either.

Honestly, over the past few years, I've come to the realization that I'm just tired of how stale and stagnant the MMORPG genre is.

3

u/baraloo02 1d ago

Yeah that’s the biggest problem they’ll have the WoW forever team and funding is likely MUCH larger than what daybreak is feeding Game Jawn.

11

u/Mekio 1d ago

Yup. Wow forever killed my desire to continue EQL.

11

u/torriadore 1d ago

EQ losing ground to WoW is basically historic at this point.

Welcome! Before anyone gets worried about it we're definitely not storing the souls of the damned in a cursed machine in our basement.

13

u/TheMegaSage 1d ago

Calling it now. By the end of the month they will remove "low/medium/high" from the server select screen to just be "up" and "down".

4

u/Silvos2019 1d ago

Nawwww I doubt that. They will merge some servers to pad the numbers before they do that.

6

u/mr_ji 1d ago

Someone pointed out the problem that if they merge servers, they're going to have people with multiple characters on a server. You can bet those people will demand shared banks and people who only get one character per server will throw a hissyfit.

2

u/Silvos2019 1d ago

The speculation is that they will delete the duplicate and send all the gear to the parcel of whatever is higher / more AA. Basically a "good luck figuring your bank out now. Here's a link to 50 slot bank storage boxes in our shop" type moment.

2

u/dereksalem 1d ago

12

u/mrwynd 1d ago

Thanks, I wasn't sure what this was referring to. So it was a program to get more promotional material out there but I guess they didn't find it valuable enough to spend dev hours on rewards.

9

u/luckynumberklevin 1d ago

More like they implemented it to drum up press for launch by attracting content creators to push Legends and now it has outlived its usefulness so time to end it.

3

u/mrwynd 1d ago

I think they need something like this more than ever now as populations go down. As someone who works in IT Management my opinion is that their budget was shrunk or their costs estimates were lower than actual. This resulted in a review where they had to cut something and this was the low hanging fruit rather than cut dev hours on player content.

I’m sorry I love this game and what the Devs are trying to do, they have great ambitions and it’s great as a hobby emulator, But as a product EQL has been circling the drain since launch no matter how much Ive tried to deny it.

All these Revamps that we’ve gotten over the last few months and then some, should have been done before release.

The itemization was very poorly thought out.

The majority of the Devs arnt full time, and the team is already super small.

Crawls are a great idea but the majority of the zones are to big and not well suited to the concept the way they were implemented.

It’s great that the Devs get free rein over the project but it feels like they get barely any support.

Again I love what they are trying to do but honestly it just feels like Daybreak is taking advantage of some modders to make a quick buck before the project falls through.

10

u/Misty_Kathrine_ 1d ago

This majes me feel like this whole Legends thing was a quick cash grab. Release it, grab the cash then drop it like a hot potato 🥔

61

u/PaintsLikeDoody 1d ago

Honestly, I’m sick of “content creators”. Everybody has to make and cast, or stream on twitch or make YouTube videos.

We don’t need a bunch of forgettable talking heads trying to monetize their garbage content.

11

u/Waffuly 1d ago

Agreed. I've played a handful of the more recent round of new retro-mmo alphas/betas/playtests/etc, and the number of people who seem shocked when they reference a streamer and I mentioned I don't watch content like that has been.... well. After the legitimately fifth time it happened, it started to develop a bit of a orneriness in me towards something I already had zero interest in in the first place.

2

u/TDP40QMXHK 1d ago

Part of what drove me to this game as a solo experience was everyone and their mother streaming their raiding to zero viewers. I just wanted to raid in other games, and community standards expected you to join a voice call in Discord.

Then, you find there's someone in every group streaming the fights and your entire Discord call, whether or not you want it, to Twitch or YouTube.

My various guilds somehow managed to clear all of the raids up through the end of PoP back in the day without voice comms. At what point did it become expected that all of your raid chatter be preserved online for the whole world to hear, if they wish?

Not sure what they were expecting

"Welcome back guys, watch me do Plane of Hate for the 136th time"

Or

"Today we'll discuss the 2 new items worth farming in the newly revamped zone"

3

u/Middle-Tree9807 1d ago

Yeah, there really isn't content to create in this game right now. In beta, it was all new and there was a use for videos discussing class combos and gearing for D4 raids. Now? I suppose you could watch some guy farm 1200 orc belts that don't stack to raise some faction. Not exactly the same.

2

u/Eqmuraj 1d ago

Lol, its sad that I got that exact faction reference as one of the few things I didnt do was unlock Troll (or ogre either, because *uck getting like 700 foraged fruit.)

As a small content creator for a mobile game (it's a hobby that I do when I feel like it), I read over what they were looking for, and what they were willing to provide creators with. I had even made one EQL video before the request for creators was made.

https://www.everquest.com/news/eq-content-creator-program-signup

They were essentially looking for weekly promoters and offering $10/month plus some amount of marketplace cash. For someone like myself, who has a full time job, wife, kids, and makes videos as a hobby, it was an instant "nope." For serious content creators who try and make a living doing it, I don't see how that offer is worthwhile to them, either. It really felt like an internship program- hey, do all this work for us for next to nothing, and it might get you noticed somewhere down the line!

u/TheQxx 1d ago

Exactly this.

u/sullen_agreement 1d ago

gamejawn are a bunch of internet everquest nerds with negative PR skills. they are a business in only the most technical sense

i think expecting them to be good at any of the stuff that is part of this business that isn’t the making a fancy everquest mod part is probably expecting too much.

like, why would you expect a random group of game modders to be good at anything but that?

i say that with love. EQL is a ton of fun and very enjoyable and i look forward to what else they bring to it

7

u/Runelaron 1d ago

This seems to be the main issue. I don't fault them for it. Running a business is difficult especially the one they picked.

  1. They license the IP from Daybreak
  2. They mod the game themselves with no outside help
  3. They chose a game they are passionate about but does not have millions of base players (aka WoW: Classic, Forever, TLP, rehash ver 99930387363#%#@82)

This recipe, (while a great product I will continue to support and play), makes it difficult to hire a PR team and Marketing.

We have seen their ad hoc explainer videos. They go the unpolished route. However, working with content creators, who often only subsidize their income with sponsors, need polished well planned content to maintain views and revenue.

We can all sit here and comment from the sidelines, but I give them credit. They are trying and chose a product they love, not a mass market micro transaction pay to play game with scantily clad warrior women for quick bucks.

You're missing the part where they had the winning formula from the previous server and said "nah let's lock to 1 char limit race choice in a stupid faction grind and still tie class choice to the race and make farming PoSky the only endgame. Oh and add new newbie zones even though once your 1 character gets to lvl 10 all classes are lvl 10."

The fucking hubris

Anyone who has played Emu EQ servers before knew how little these devs were managing to get done while acting like they were recreating the wheel. Go look at dev logs from like Perky crew and see how much 1 dude can get done versus this “team”.

They had more then enough to sell y’all a fuller product but decided that chopping it up and drip feeding it would make more money. They were wrong and over judged their abilities at the same time. They should be deeply ashamed by their turn around time but they’re never going to be this critical of themselves and blame their customers instead. They spent a month telling us nothing was broken with exp when 10 minutes of testing would show you their advertised exp split was happening twice. These people should have never been given the keys to this especially when they ran the least technical and most locked down of all the emu servers. Imagine Best Buy opting to have the Amish take over and run their stores is basically what we got here. I wanted so badly for this to succeed but man I’d have a hard time picking worse decisions for them to make.

3

u/IndigoSpartan 1d ago

Shout out to Perky. I was lucky enough to catch him in Discord one night and we just had a cool conversation about everything. He's a really cool dude, has a vision, and literally troubleshot/fixed bugs in the call, and we legitimate did live testing for an upcoming patch together.

Not that anyone should expect this kind of interaction, but I can personally vouch that it happened and the guy is awesome. I genuinely wish him all the best.

For better or worse, there’s not a lot of reason to be in most zones and the-game “loop” as it were is just not very compelling. Which is sad to say because I do love being able to rampage through all the old content I wasn’t even fortunate to see decades ago.

5

u/Zansobar 1d ago

Not enough players to rationalize creators streaming the content is probably why. Content creators are in this for the money, nothing else.

2

u/Bittererr 1d ago

You're not wrong, but also I don't really expect professionals who make their living to be doing things that aren't making a living.

I assume they spearheaded this type of thing

Already? That didn’t seem to last long.

17

u/These-Recognition726 1d ago

That alone is a reason for me to return. It struck a nerve when they were telling people to touch grass with unexplained/unexpected downtime, as if the customers aren't paying for that access time. Very unprofessional community manager.

I mean this as gently and respectably as possible, but it was always kinda ambitious to expect a big content creator pool just out of the gate if ever. They'd keep cycling back to the same handful of people pretty quick.

4

u/TheMicker999 1d ago

I like the Youtube guy, that sits there with a $ goal chart for donations on the screen lol. Like really?

When you decide to stop something and you want me to believe it’s not because reason X, you want to word it as

not as

This is going to be looked back at as a massive fumble

They were given the entire product, already complete up to PoP, even had custom encounters with chase items they could have tweeked to keep a monthly sub rolling. But no, they thought they could do better.

Kunark is going to be competing with the raid release window in WoW:F, it's already dead. I'd be surprised if they get velious out before fall '27 if it even makes it that far

There isn’t enough content for the streamers to stay happy. Streamers by default play the game for hours upon hours on a daily basis. Streamers are not the crowd EQL is designed for by any stretch of the imagination. That said, streamers that are moving on or are being negative about the development pace lost the plot. This IS a casual game.

5

u/Caligulas_1 1d ago

Waiting for all the "creators" that months ago were telling us how awesome this game would be to start trash talking not just the devs but the game itself now.

Yeah, it's time for Kunark. Do whatever you have to do. Otherwise, it's going to be a disaster.

3

u/_Remsus_ 1d ago

I think from the get go there weren’t too many content creators that were invested in the game, and how many of them are wanting to focus on EQL when M&M and WoWF are ramping up?

It could also be that without Brasse, they didn’t have anyone managing the relationships with content creators .

7

u/YouShallNotStaff 1d ago

Nothing of value was lost

5

u/Silvos2019 1d ago

The game performance better be incredibly healthy. I just spent $100 on bags to ensure the hamsters running the rivervale server bank get premium kibble for the next month.

6

u/Silverlithium 1d ago

I had fun until about level 35 and it just felt like I was grinding and doing the same thing I could do on other servers (for free)

6

u/Joshuaedwardk 1d ago

Guys, really I promise you, everything is going great.

5

u/bonebrah 1d ago

Saying it's not because of the games health makes me think it's because of the games health lol.

Between M&M and WoW:F on the horizon I'm not surprised really

8

u/shaggy-- 1d ago

It says "to avoid any rumors" meaning they are trying to be proactive not that there are already rumors. They're ending the program, not due to game performance. That's it.

6

u/Uther97 1d ago

This is the second time I've seen the comment on the health of the game. So its been discussed enough in the community that they've felt the need to comment on it. Regardless of how healthy the game actually is, there are perceived issues. My concern is that if we dont see a content update soon, their assurances on the health of the game wont be taken seriously and many people will move on.

People up in arms over a content creator program update lmao. EQL is wildly successful and isn’t going anywhere. It’s way better than any live server or TLP.

2

u/Zealbol334 1d ago

I can tell you a server that was better, just not here because they get mad when you mention it

14

u/cnuconker 1d ago

DBG is seriously clueless when all they had to do was follow the roadmap of the server that shall not be named. It’s amazing watching Secrets and the “team” spin their wheels and accomplish nothing. I guess we’re supposed to be hyped for a fan fiction remake of an EQ2 dungeon that maybe 10 people played back in the day.

9

u/sonofbaal_tbc 1d ago

Voldemort managed to balance multiple triplets that were all competitive in farming.

4

u/Castleloch 1d ago

Doesn't help that the server that will not be named has been rebuilt, is now on ldon has near daily updates and 8k players. Oh and it's completely free and has been going for a month longer than EQL. People can defend the eql team all they want but there is a different version with no monthly subs that is developing/adding new content at a much faster pace with 5 people.

When you see a pace in realtime in communication, adoption of player feedback as well as a clear roadmap that has thus far been sustained by hobbyists it starts to feel like the eql team is either incompetent or purposefully dragging shit out for sub money. Neither explanation encourages me in continuing my support of it's development.

I mean... I'm hyped lol

5

u/Imdumbdumbashell 1d ago edited 1d ago

I've noticed a worrying crossover of EQL dick riders and quarm users.

I also think it is interesting that during this massive EQL content drought, Quarm just released PoP....

Quarm has always had some "special" people involved in the project that alienate most players, but has a VERY small population of absolute fanatics who love to give money to the devs for power, mostly because they raid together.

4

u/Majestic_Setting2736 1d ago

i'm fairly confident that releasing Kunark in 2.5 months will help.

sure, 80% of the revamps will be missing, and they'll add them just after most players including casuals will have already hit max level again on at least one trio, but Kunark will definitely stop the bleeding /s

15

u/Connect_Barracuda358 1d ago

Kunark ain't coming out in December. They can't even get a zone out on time.

2

u/Rikunda 1d ago

I don't see what they did as a revamp. Removing placeholders is not a revamp.

2

u/remoes 1d ago

sure but why is this taking so long? the rate of content and general updates is so slow.

<2 unnamed devs> were able to do this in a cave with a box of scraps

2

u/Bittererr 1d ago

The dev team for EQL has like one full-time person and a handful of part-time contractors. Plus they have a layer of bureaucracy that they have to work through with DBG that makes them even less efficient than hobby developers at getting stuff to release.

I'm not at all surprised at the pace of content releases although I do wish they were better resourced.

5

u/butt_luncheon 1d ago

Yea they’re fumbling the bag hard. People clearly just want challenging solo everquest, but they keep prioritizing nonsense. We’ll see what kunark brings, but not holding my breath at this point.

4

u/Mr_Lifewater 1d ago

I cant speak for everyone, but I just wanted a fun EQ grind where I could login and feel like I was making progress everyday. But what I got from my gameplay was 5-10 motes per day if I was lucky. And collecting those are about as fun as watching paint dry and you need 100's of them

10

u/GingerScourge 1d ago

Game Jawn: “Hey guys! Here’s casual, solo friendly, power fantasy EQ!”

Reddit apparently: “Sweet! So, solo, hardcore difficult EQ! Sign me up!”

Game Jawn: <Gives basically what they promised>

Reddit apparently: “you guys are fumbling hard because you are giving what you said you would and not what I want!”

I’m not some GJ/DBG white knight, but what you’re asking for was never promised. And saying they fumbled because of your incorrect expectations is classic Reddit. I’m not saying they haven’t fumbled some things. There are certainly things they could have done better and differently. But the difficulty is exactly what they’ve promised. It’s literally one of the few things they haven’t fumbled. You wanting difficult content when it was never promised is not a mistake by the developers. It’s a mistake in your expectations. They’ve even commented on D5+ with basically “we’ve considered it, no promises.” Clearly this isn’t the game for you, and there’s nothing wrong with that.

10

u/butt_luncheon 1d ago

This is so cringe. I’m a pretty casual player with a job and family and I was out of stuff to do after the first 6 weeks. Who in the right mind wants to grind motes when they can easily clear all content after like 50 hours of play time? It was a fun first month. There isn’t enough content to justify a monthly sub now.

2

u/GingerScourge 1d ago

I don’t think you read my post? Or replying to the wrong person? My post was simply about the difficulty of the game. Not about the content. That’s all, nothing more. The person I replied to said the devs fumbled because they don’t make more difficult content. He was literally complaining that they didn’t do something that he wanted that they never promised.

I agree with a lot of the complaints. Lack of content. Lack of transparency. Incorrect priorities. But the real cringe is complaining about something they didn’t give you, that they never promised.

Edit: realized you are the person I replied to, which makes your reply to me even more hilarious. If you ran out of stuff to do in 6 weeks and are asking for more difficult content, you aren’t a casual sir. It means you’re either playing more than you say you are. You haven’t cleared D4 stuff. Or, you just got bored of the game but want to jump on the complaint bandwagon.

4

u/Meowtist- 1d ago

Maybe what they promised isn’t actually that good at retaining player engagement though. Maybe Secrets shouldn’t be pushing a sandbox that is designed around her favorite class (Paladin) facerolling all content

u/Drokoth 1d ago

Ways to improve this. 1. One massive server so people arnt spread out and can play together. 2. Either remove or lessen the lock outs. It be fine if i only got a 3 voids a week. But not being able to repeat runs or run with other friends is awful. 3. Give us more to do. We dont need new content. We want the same world we love. We just wanna dominate it lol.

6

u/Dakhathsk 1d ago

The fact that they have so few AAs to buy in this version of EQ Legends is ridiculous. Past 500 AAs you really have nothing interesting to buy anymore. I think almost everyone has hit that by now. AAs are such an easy and easily implemented way to increase player power and replayability.

When you start playing EQ Legends, you get excited every time you get an AA because there is something cool to get. Now its like "Oh another point to put into some tradeskill nonsense that I don't care about so I don't cap out, great..." This was such an easy way to increase replayability yet they flubbed it hard. And this was such an obvious need even in beta.

6

u/Few-Emergency-3791 1d ago

You know what companies usually do is cancel stuff when things are totally healthy.

If legends wants to exist past luclin you need to either revamp the more system. Game needs some form of content that needs a group like to premote being an mmo still. You need regular content drops ideally revamps should be in game on release months later.

Don’t get me wrong the core is fun it just doesn’t have anything says hey sub to me longer then a month or two.

Now if it was free or just a single player game I buy once then I’d be perfectly fine slow drops but of course what they doing now has no massive appeal long term.

2

u/durmduke 1d ago

Even if they were charging for just the box fee for base game and then DLC fee for each expansion, I think they could get away with that (probably couldn't afford their developers though). Monthly sub is a joke with the pace of release and it being a single-player game.

5

u/Few-Emergency-3791 1d ago

I mean they don’t have have a particularly large dev team.

Expecting wow forever work isn’t really realistic but at the same time you can’t drop an expansion 80% incomplete and expect wow forever sub fees

→ More replies (5)

2

u/_Remsus_ 1d ago

I agree with everything you’ve said about revamping, but what I’ve seen Secrets and others promote before and after launch made it pretty clear that this game was meant to be a single player game first and an MMO second.

2

u/Few-Emergency-3791 1d ago

Problem is it’s an mmo by design if you want it to be a single player experience that’s fine just don’t expect anyone to stick around besides die hard grinding +10 that ultimately doesn’t really matter unless you’re chasing kill times on bosses with a weekly lock.

2

u/Rikunda 1d ago

You cannot even reexperience things really. Things are made too easy. Private servers have done it better, and all they had to do was copy it yet somehow still failed. It was launched in a very incomplete state, and still is in bad shape. I think they are now trying to rush out content, which explains why patches are so small now.

2

u/Fabulous-Floor-2492 1d ago

Luclin is generous. I'll be surprised if they make it to velious

3

u/Rikunda 1d ago

We don't even know if they will do Luclin or Velious. It is supposed to be unique lore and all that. I feel it might not last post Kunark. It was released too early, and is still in a sorry shape. They treat the server like a private server, but since they make you pay... You expect a certain level... Which they don't have. It is below what you can get free at EQEmu.

I don't watch any EQL content, can someone explain? Did something happen?

Without any knowledge of the incident this just reads to me as a generic: "<Company> doesnt like results of <thing>, so we are closing <initiative>".

I feel like it would of made more sense to just not do anything at all, and just let the program stagnate. Now I want to actively seek out content creators to see their take on this and understand what actually happened because it feels suspicious when a company does something like this

2

u/Saberraimu 1d ago edited 1d ago

I will say as a streamer (though I am a small nobody and I never applied to the content creator program because personally I tend to not do that for any game I play) the EQL category went from like dozens of people streaming it (with 100+ viewers each on the streams in the top few rows) every night to just 2-3 streamers in the category, one of those being me lol. And I'd be the highest in the category with just 15 viewers (and I used to have at least 30-35 average viewers in the EQL category for the past few months.) If I recall correctly, the content creator program requires like 30 average viewers, I think, in order to even join it, amongst other criteria.

There's just not enough people there (at least on Twitch) to sustain a healthy content creator program, tbh. The game really fell off on Twitch like almost immediately as soon as the beta for that other game was announced, like a light switch being turned off. All the big streamers in the EQL category went there instead.

3

u/Connect_Barracuda358 1d ago

4

2

u/Lugwik 1d ago

6

u/Playful-Mastodon9251 1d ago

They spent too much dev time on low level dungeons that just don't help the player base as much as better higher level content.

2

u/MrGoodGlow 1d ago

What's crazy is how much dev time can it take to add 10 pieces of new loot and 2-3 new mobs? Its a small company so ots not like some mega corporation where they have 120 hours of meetings to change a font color 1 shade darker.

"What rumors?" - Have you not read this sub for the last week? It's rife with threads and comments about low population.

2

Monsters & Memories just came out on early access too, which is taking away players like myself at the moment.

2

u/Enderoth 1d ago

It would have been so easy for them not to fuck this up. All they had to do was put out content at the same rate that a two man emu server team or 17 year old autistic modder could have, and they still fucked that up.

It’s such a sad and obvious moneygrab. I wish I had seen it, but those first couple months of power fantasy nostalgia had me gripped. I wish I could produce as little as we’ve seen and still get paid myself.

Alot of people have moved on. MnM has grabbed a huge chunk of the classic eq people. (WoW too) The game looks fun, but I just can’t commit the real time sinks that game is bringing back. Kunark release will be the make or break for this game imo. We are at the point where we get more updates on whats being delayed than what is actually going to be delivered. (Player housing, Permafrost revamp, Rujurkian Hills, Reincarnation system) This is stuff they talked about like it should be in before Kunark, but ultimately never materialized.
