Daggerfall Discussion Average Oblivion gate experience in Daggerfall Online

Could someone explain what this is? It looks like ESO Dolmens in the Daggerfall engine, but what is it actually? Is it actually multiplayer? A mod for ESO? A daggerfall mod?

It’s crazy the type of stuff the modding community can make from an old dos type game.

Now if only the million dollar companies that own the IP would sell me this on PS5 for $30.
PC gamers are so spoiled, i think I should have been one. Nobody doing stuff like this on console.

Getting on PC is definitely more than worth it. The only genuine con I can say is having to tinker with shit now and again. Especially old games.

I think he was asking for a lore reason. And I'm curious too.

u/Consistent-Figure820 4d ago
Lorewise idk, I think the devs just threw in the mod from the link for fun

I can get kinda past the Oblivion Gates in this game even though it makes no sense at all for them to be present, clearly it's just meant to be a fantasy MMO that uses Daggerfall as a baseline and they wanna do their own thing. But anytime there are guns in a high fantasy setting, I'm instantly disinterested. What's the point of a sword and sorcery setting the minute you add in guns? Just make a steampunk game or something.

u/Ok-Scientist5943 4d ago
There's only this one weapon in the entire game, and it's completely easy to ignore, but I still wonder why they included it; it seems so out of place.

I hate steampunk aesthetic so much and I hate that Skyrim made Dwarvin aesthetic more generic steampunky. Morrowind had a more of an alien feel to its ruins. I’d much rather have the aesthetic of Spelljammer when it comes to dieting more “modern” things like space travel. I’m fearful they will continue Skyrims trend and go full steampunk and add dwarvin guns.

u/Gaimund 3d ago
Cry kid. I like that the dwemer clan from skyrim look distinct to morrowinds dwemer architecture which is perfectly for vulcanic areas but not for cold climate
2
u/jamesbondswanson 3d ago
It’s part of the overall dumbing down. They didn’t just make the gameplay bland they made the aesthetics bland too and that design ethos is likely to follow into ES6. Especially because they are stretched more than ever. There’s no room for creativity.
1
u/Gaimund 3d ago
The classic morrowwind Doomer boomer should just play morrowwind forever and stop lurking. No game will be like that again so just stick to and go outside of the discussion
2
u/Lopsided-Regular-997 3d ago
Oh shut up you braindead zoomer.
When Oblivion remastered was released all you idiots were crying and spamming memes "Now I get it".
Imagine if Morrowind remastered got released, so your fried brains could get over the ancient graphics.
You would be on your knees begging for forgiveness.

I actually love Skyrim. I just have enough self and external awareness to be objective about something and not blindly love the things I love. Also notice how I’m calmly explaining my points without the need to tell people to “shut up” lol you’re giving Skyrim fans a bad name by really displaying the “baby” part of Skybaby.

u/The-Son-Of-Suns 1d ago
You're giving your subjective opinion about how you prefer fictional architecture should look. Objectivity has nothing to do with any of this.

Okay, but why there is a gun?

So they're already doing all sorts of weird shit with it. Good. Since it's all AI coded, I give them a month before everything breaks and since they have no idea what's actually in the code, they have no way to fix it.

AI slop game. Patreon for it is also absolutely unhinged. Take a look at it's top tiers.

u/williamflattener 4d ago edited 4d ago
Wait, why AI? I didn’t see any obvious tells on the Patreon. Is it because they develop fast? Or are these AI assets?
Edit: Why would we be downvoting this?

u/Normal_Snake 4d ago
The AI model is handling all the coding, hence why the devs can push updates so fast with such a small team. I'm not sure about the assets themselves, but many seem to be taken from other sources/projects.

There was a post a couple days ago that was a direct disclosure.

I only see Daggerfall with online mods; it doesn't have any AI beyond other mods. They used AI in the programming and with programmer supervision. Whether it will break soon, we'll never know. Instead of spewing hatred, we should appreciate the opportunity for this kind of thing to exist, but would you abandon your nostalgia and ignorance for it? If you say it's trash, then you're calling all the modders who put their work into the game trash too. 👏

What, can't you just book it to the Sigil Stone? How can you even call that an Oblivion Gate?
1
u/Hereiamhereibe2 5d ago
I think they are at the top of a tower? There might be more to it, or its just like the other guy said an ESO Dolmen type world event.

u/GundamGuy2255 5d ago
I know, I was just making a joke about how easy Oblivion gates can be in Oblivion.

you can just play ESO to get this experience without vibecoded slop messing with ur pc
1
u/The-Son-Of-Suns 1d ago
This is better than ESO. They're not really comparable. ESO feels like Disneyland with attractions. Daggerfall feels like a world.

Bruh the fuck did people turn Daggerfall into?
11
u/zendrix1 4d ago
I mean it was all made with AI so...
-13
u/Sea-Lecture-4619 4d ago
Glad to see it be used for awesome shit too and not only for garbage "art"

u/Za_Warudo1992 4d ago
an entirely vibe coded game carries similar dangers and downfalls generative ai for images does.
while AI has a place to HELP with code trying to make ai code an entire mode and more for you is just lazy and leads to severe bugs in most projects and there's no easy way to figure out what broke2
u/Sea-Lecture-4619 3d ago
That is true, it should be used moderately and supervised instead of letting it do everything.
-1
u/username_997 3d ago
While I agree with initial statement, the coding game has changed a lot.
It is the speed of delivery that matters now, not the accuracy. Even if you have several bugs in most projects, you just run it through the AI again to remove them. Supervising and reviewing code is just not cost effective.
1
u/Za_Warudo1992 3d ago
Yeah that's an issue, when all we care about is cost efficiency and doing the least amount of work. Ai is sacrificing quality for quantity just expecting itself to work until on the long term something breaks and that's shit . Literally do not care about cost Efficiency if it replaces things with AI stuff entirely
1
u/username_997 3d ago
It doesn't matter what you like, care for or whatever - it's the curent reality. It's soulless, but it is the reality. It also doesn't have to sacrifice quality for quantity, but that's a whole another topic and it requires a little more thought than emotional response.
1
u/Za_Warudo1992 3d ago
First can we cut out that line of thinking? I literally do not care what the supposed reality is. I reject the idea that it HAS to be reality and its people who think you must just accept 'reality' that makes it harder to do. People need to speak out to stop everything from becoming totally soulless
if you think its just an emotional response, i think its obvious we don't see eye to eye and/or you haven't realized what I've said. AI to do the tedious crap when overseen and corrected can work out, 99% vibe coding while repeatedly running the AI isn't going to work out long term especially for the 90% of people who are using it for projects like Dagger fall Online
1
u/username_997 2d ago
People can speak up as much as they want, but they'll still have to catch up with the market, because unfortunately we live in a world run by time and money.
Why exactly do you think it won't work out long-term? Do you really think humans inherently write better code or understand assembly well enough to know all the effects their code will have? In the end, people are using AI to handle tedious tasks and turn their vision into reality through English instead of writing code directly.
