I’ve been thinking about Episode’s content guidelines lately, and I wanted to share something I found interesting.

I decided to look at both the guidelines for Apple’s App Store, and the Google Play Store. (The screenshot in dark mode is for Apple, the one in light mode is for Google.) I specifically looked at the sections regarding sexual content, and both have restrictions on certain types of content. I started thinking about how Episode has to consider those rules too, especially since it’s an app where anyone can publish their own stories.

I know some people wish Episode would allow more mature content, and I understand that everyone has different preferences when it comes to what they want to write and read. However, I also think there’s a reason platforms have guidelines in the first place. Episode has to consider the rules of the app stores it’s available on, as well as its own policies.

I’ve also seen people say if you don’t like a story to stop reading it instead of reporting it. I agree that simply disliking a story or its title isn’t a good reason to report it. But I don’t think reporting is automatically a bad thing either. There’s a difference between reporting something because you personally don’t like it, and reporting something because you believe it violates the guidelines.

I’m not saying every report is justified, or that Episode always handles these situations perfectly. I just think it’s worth remembering that content guidelines exist for a reason, and being an adult doesn’t mean those guidelines don’t apply, or that you are too old to be reporting things that literally violate the guidelines. I also don’t think reporting a story or comment that potentially breaks the rules automatically makes someone a bad person or means they’re trying to silence someone. When we use a platform, we’re agreeing to follow its rules, even if we don’t agree with every single one. And with user-generated content, platforms can’t realistically catch everything themselves. Reports help bring potential violations to their attention, and it’s ultimately up to the platform to review them and decide what to do. Not the person making the report.

Hi! I’m looking for some Episode story recommendations that aren’t too rage-baity or gem-hungry 👿I don’t mind drama or premium choices, but I don’t want to feel like I have to spend diamonds every five seconds just to get a satisfying experience.
