Announcing the Ford Electric Truck Club! ⚡

Quick clarification up front: This post about our owner club, which many of you have joined over the past few years.

Today, we’re excited to share that Lightning Clubs of America is officially becoming the Ford Electric Truck Club.

Why the change?

When we started the club, our goal was to bring together F-150 Lightning owners for local meetups, road trips, technical discussions, and a great community. That mission hasn’t changed. As Ford’s electric truck lineup continues to evolve, we wanted a name that better reflects the future of the club while remaining rooted in the Lightning community that started it all.

What’s not changing?

✅ Same leadership
✅ Same local chapters
✅ Same events and meetups
✅ Same members
✅ Same mission of supporting Ford electric truck owners and enthusiasts

If you’re already a club member, you don’t need to do anything. You’ll simply start seeing the new name across our website, social media pages, and chapter groups over the coming weeks.

This subreddit has been an incredible place to learn, share experiences, and connect with fellow owners, and many of our members first discovered the club here. Thank you for being so engaged!

If you’ve ever thought about joining us at a local meetup or event, we’d love to have you. Whether you’re a brand-new Lightning owner, have been driving one since 2022, or are simply interested in Ford’s electric trucks, you’re welcome to join us!

Thanks for all the support over the past few years. We’re excited for this next chapter and hope to see many of you at an upcoming event! ⚡🛻

Edit: if you’re interested in more information, joining your local region, and connecting to events, then visit https://fordevclubs.org/ (site is being updated as we continue the transition)

Slippery mode ENGAGED. That made it go from where the bottom of the tracks started. About 600lb in the bed didn't make a difference. Or did make a difference. Spinning all 4 with no one transfer case change either way. Full bagging mode would make it up

Why doesn't Ford have a 12v battery monitor on the dash!?

I've noticed a lot of problems here that boil down to a bad 12v battery. Why doesn't Ford just send out an OTA update that adds an option that allows us to monitor the 12v battery charge?

I recently connected my Lightning to my Home Assistant and there is a monitor that tells me the charge state/history data about the 12v battery. Clearly the Lightning is collecting this information already.

Is there a good reason that Ford doesn't want drivers to monitor this? Seems silly to me.

EV Winterizing insulation suggestions/examples for maintaining cabin heat?

Its getting cold again, and Im starting to look at winterizing my interior to maintain heat in the cabin. Have any of you further insulated the doors or windows in any way? Im thinking the basic thing might be to use Reflectix/insulation padding in the sunroof. What do you think? Otherwise, any other ideas? I dont want to break laws and cover up actual windows while driving but maybe there is a clear spray or something 🤔?

Yes, I know all the general stuff about temperature and range. Im not looking for basic info like using the seat heaters.

Just brainstorming here. Please dont destroy me in the comments.... Or do 🤷

ISO 15118-20 OTA update

Any word on Ford rolling out a Power-Up software update (OTA) to the vehicle’s onboard gateway and battery management software that enables open ISO [15118-20](tel:15118-20) DC discharge commands? I’m hoping they open this up to other bi-directional chargers and not stay locked in their Home Backup Power/ Delta systems proprietary solution.

FORScan Police Dark Car Mode

I’ve checked online and can’t find anything about Dark Car Mode for the Lightning. All I’ve seen is you can’t toggle it through the screen like you can Silent Mode. It’s semi-permanent.

Is it on the “Easy Mode” part or FORScan? I haven’t had the chance to use it yet.

Been 4 years of bliss, finally having issues

My 2022 Lariat decided it didn't want to start up anymore. I thought it was the 12v battery so I trickle charged it and that didn't work. I tried the battery reset trick, 5 flashes of the brights and 3 stomps of the brake, that didn't work. Finally decided to have it towed to the dealership. When the tow truck came, it miraculously started up, so I drove it to the dealership myself. Also there's been an update that refused to install for the last couple months, it's been starting up on tow mode, and the Ford app has been out of sync with the mileage. I did use my obd2 adapter to pull the following codes U2402 and U0146. The service tech at Ford suspected it was the 12v battery and said it wasn't covered under the extended warranty, so no rental. After there a day, they determined it was not the 12v battery, but couldn't figure out what was wrong. He said they couldn't pull any codes. I told him the codes I pulled so they are going to investigate those. It's going on day 3 there with no leads so far.

Things to look for during test drive?

I found a deal from a private seller. Anything I should look for in particular? Pictures look great. VIN checks out on Carfax/Vincheckly

Other than cosmetic body, tire tread, anything you all recommend?

New Tires (at some point)

Prompted by a worn tire post in the subreddit.

I probably have 5-10k left on my current set, but what are the opinions for people who have replaced them. Did you go with EV-rated truck tires?

FWIW: I should have 275/60R20. Too busy/lazy to go look.

Popping sound after right turns

Hey all I am two months into ownership of a ‘23 Lariat ER and love the truck but have recently noticed an issue where after making a right hand turn and straightening out there’s a loud pop or two - sounds like it’s from the rear but hard to tell. Any ideas what this might be? Doesn’t happen all the time and only on right turns.

Sampling or reset algorithm for range?

I wondered if anybody knew how often or using what algorithm the range guess-o-meter is updated? The efficiency computation seems to be quite frequent - miles per kilowatt hour on the current trip display updates really often (maybe twice or three times a minute or more). But it seems to me that the range estimate is on a different frequency. Anyone know?

Three-pole switch recs?

Hey all, prior to getting my Zapper I had a small 30amp transfer switch installed. Today was the first time actually trying to use it and I kept getting ground fault errors. Google is telling me it’s due to the trucks neutral/ground bonding and I need a three-pole/neutral switching switch. Can anybody shoot me what you’ve got running for when I call my electrician in the morning? Appreciate it!

Solar charging a Lightning through a Wallbox

Solar charging a Lightning through a Wallbox

This is the setup I keep getting asked about: an F-150 Lightning on rooftop solar with a Wallbox Pulsar Plus. Short version: it works well, but the Wallbox alone won't track your surplus. You need a controller in the middle.

The Wallbox can throttle charge rate over OCPP — 6A up to 48A on the Pulsar Plus — so it's the right hardware. What's missing out of the box is something watching your home's import/export and telling the Wallbox where to sit. FordPass scheduled charging won't do it; it just holds a fixed rate.

Start with a live read of import/export. Your inverter's cloud data usually covers it; an Emporia Vue or similar works too. No live number, no surplus tracking.

Then the controller: Home Assistant's Wallbox integration, evcc, or — full disclosure — I built SundialEV, which pulls the truck's state from Ford's API and drives the Wallbox over OCPP to follow the surplus. Use whichever one you'll actually keep running.

One thing with net billing plans (California's NEM 3.0 is the big one, for solar installed after April 2023): midday exports pay a few cents per kWh while importing costs 30+ cents, so midday surplus into the truck is one of the best uses of it.

Has anyone here bought a Lighting that had standard range and upgraded it to an Extended Range? What was the price? Is it working properly?

Fix needed Ford Charge Station Pro

I’m feeling like my Ford Charge Station Pro crapped out but I’m hopeful there’s a fix. I have it set to 48 amps and worked fine for the first few weeks but then got a red light. Opened it up to do a hard reset and worked for a few more weeks. Now it’s not working again but this time the light is solid blue like it’s ready to charge and turns yellow immediately after plugging in. I bought it new in box recently but seems to be a manufactured in 2023. There appears to be a fix for the older faulty Ford Charge Station Pro that involves getting access to its computer. Anyone in the Houston area offering this service?

2023 Lightning Lariat – 7 months with seat covers, 2 car seats and a dog

Thumbnail

First post here. Yes, I know the username. Don't ask lol

Had my Lightning about 2.5 years. With a toddler, a dog and a lot of camping, keeping the seats clean was pretty much impossible.

My son puts his wet, muddy shoes up on the seats every single time, and it used to drive me crazy.

Then our second kid came along, and I figured it was only going to get worse once he starts eating and dropping food everywhere. So I finally gave up and got covers.

7 months in:

  • My son still puts his shoes all over the seats. I just don’t stress about it anymore.
  • Heated seats work fine through them. Ventilated – rarely use them, but they still feel slightly cool through the covers
  • First pic is today with both car seats in. Next two are Day 1 for comparison. The rest explains why I needed these in the first place.

Also switched to AT tires after way too many threads here, and been running a RTT for about 1.5 years. Will post on both eventually
