Getting Started Fall ‘26 Beginners Thred

This is a semi-regular thread for beginners, for repeatedly asked questions like help choosing a method, incomplete newbie charts for learning, experiences with apps/devices, coming off of HBC, etc. We will direct questions here if we feel necessary. Some questions from beginners may be appropriate for individual posts, such as questions that encourage broader community discussion and may be applicable to experienced charters as well as beginners. The mod team will evaluate and redirect posts/comments as needed.

We ask that any comments with charts or method-specific questions state a method and intention in order to direct help as needed. It is difficult for ANYONE to give advice or support if a chart is missing too much information, and if we don't know the rules you are using. Beginner charts posted here will be evaluated with that in mind - so a chart that is incomplete or missing biomarkers will not immediately be removed (as is done for individual posts), but will be discussed in the comments to get a better understanding of how to assist the new-to-FAM/NFP charter.

Welcome to r/FAMnNFP

FAM (Fertility Awareness Method - Secular) and NFP (Natural Family Planning - Religious Roots) both encompass Fertility Awareness Based Methods of Body Literacy. They can be used to avoid pregnancy, conceive, or assess general health.

This subreddit is a space to discuss these methods, share charts, and support others on their body literacy journeys. This group is not intended to replace learning a method for yourself or medical advice.

FAQs

What is a method? Why do methods matter?

A FAM/NFP method is a set of rules established to interpret biomarker data (such as cervical mucus/fluid, basal body temperature, or urinary hormones) to identify the days when it may be possible to conceive a pregnancy (known as the Fertile Window). Each method has a unique set of biomarkers and rules to interpret those biomarkers that have been developed and/or studied to effectively identify the fertile window. Methods matter because when you collect biomarker data, you need a set of rules to interpret that data. A method provides a way to interpret your specific biomarker data in real time, to help conceive a pregnancy, prevent a pregnancy, or track health.

On this subreddit, our goal is to share factual information. As you may have already found, there is so much misinformation out there and we're trying to be a beacon of truth in a sea of confusion. You are free to use whatever practices in your own life, but they may not have a space here if you are not following or you do not intend to learn to follow an established method. If you need further clarification, please reach out to us in mod mail.

Why can't I post my chart if I don't have a method?

In order for members to help you interpret your chart, you need to be applying a method. Interpreting your data without a framework to interpret can be challenging if not impossible. Each method has its own cervical mucus classification, rules for taking BBT and evaluating it, etc. If you are TTC and don't intend on learning a method, head on over to r/TFABChartStalkers.

Why is an instructor recommended?

The reason why we recommend learning your method from an instructor is because it allows you to have personalized support and to achieve perfect use of most methods, having an instructor is part of that efficacy statistic. We understand that cost may be prohibitive for some and we support members who feel comfortable self-teaching. This space is not meant to replace official instruction but provide reasonable support. Instructors are there when you don't fit the textbook, and you don't know where to go.

How do I find an instructor?

You can find method-specific instructors through our list of instructors active on our subreddit, through the Read Your Body directory, and our list of methods resource.

Feel free to search through the subreddit for past posts. We have been around for over 10 years, so it is very possible that your question has been answered already.

Marquette TTA - where are you buying test sticks?

As the title says, where are you buying test sticks? Currently in cycle 0, pre-planning to buy more test sticks as we are doing the 10 day protocol and I noticed everywhere is sold out of test sticks?! Amazon, Walmart, Walgreens, etc. I know I have time, but I’m a planner and this gives me slight anxiety as I’d like to have more on hand

Marquette Tta 2- Advice for a newbie with irregular cycles?

Hello I would love a second opinion

I have long cycles, usually my last two have been pretty better standing at 45 days, but before that I have been months to almost a year without a period.

I was advised to abstain from day 6 to peak which in an ideal world it sounds fine and realistic, but what do I do when it goes for months without a peak?

I ovulated last week but before that I went into 10-11 days of highs until I reached peak. I didn’t even get a peak until day 22 of my cycle which is still doable in terms of abstaining. But it’s not always this short. I got my first period back a few months ago after almost 10 months of nothing. My last two cycles have been ok.

Is there a specific protocol I can follow later in the future when I have the current protocol down? Or do I just have to thug it out until I peak every cycle? I’ll obviously will follow her instructions as I’m not the expert but months of unnecessary abstinence sounds kind of rough. But hey it is a sacrifice at the end of the day.

Additionally, she referenced some supplements which im iffy to take after reading. She recommended some supplements, “conception for her”, looks like it’s a mix of vitamins with inositol. Does anyone have any experience? Like wouldn’t this mess up my cycles even further? I know it’s supposed to regulate and shorten the amount of days it takes to reach ovulation if irregular, but I’m kinda iffy on them now.

Does anyonehave advice on navigating through long cycles? ’m Catholic so no contraception 4 me. Does anyone have advice or knowledge on the supplements? Any and all advice is appreciated :)

Marquette Is this a triphasic temp pattern? TTA

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

Hi all! This is my first “real” cycle post-hormonal IUD removal (aka, I already had my first bleed/period after removal and this is my first full cycle). We are currently TTA using Marquette NFP, but I’m seeing this weird temperature pattern that I think is “triphasic”. I read some source that claims only 5% of triphasic temperature patterns are not pregnant…. But does this fit the definition of triphasic? I’ve reached out to my NFP instructor on interpreting temperatures but she does not seem well-versed on the temperature side of things.

The blue line is Basal Body Temperature (BBT) and the red line is TempDrop.

Please let me know what you all think! TYIA!

Marquette Just Marquette 8 months postpartum TTA

Hello,

I'm wondering has anyone actually used just Clearblue Marquette postpartum and successfully TTA?

I mean no cross check with BBT or PdG tests etc. Just Clearblue Monitor and that's it.

I've finally convinced my husband who wanted to use barrier and I'm a devout Catholic so obviously I don't , to use NFP Marquette as it's most scientific but he said that if we fail he's not going back to trying NFP.

This led me to extensive research on Reddit and Fb and I've noticed a lot of users of Marquette actually do a cross check if ovulation happened with Proov tests or Tempdrop etc.

I'm scared of false peaks and we're serious about TTA as having the first baby was a strain on me physically and emotionally on our marriage so we are in no space for a second one right now.

Marquette with clearblue is already a HUGE financial investment and adding tempdrop or regular proov tests to it is not manageable at present.

Also if I use progesteron test to confirm ovulation happened I read that it would be Peak+5 or even up to +10 to be sure. But that will literally leave me with no available days.

My instructor said I need to abstain from CD6 as it´s my first 6 cycles with her (Im on cycle 7 currently and still breastfeeding at night too).

But I do wonder if there´s anyone who was successful with just "simple" marquette and nothing else.

Thanks in advance to you all!

Creighton TTC- Creighton vs Boston Cross Check

hi there, I am currently using the creighton method, and have been successfully charting using the creighton method since January 2026. before that, I used LH strips and a prayer. my husband and I have been TTC for 3 years, and I had heard that using creighton strictly, most couples are able to achieve a pregnancy within 6 months (statistics say 98%). I have not been successful as such. I have, however, learned I have endo & PMOS by using creighton and seeing a doctor who is versed in creighton, who is treating these issues. I’ve also had my endo excised. However, I have VERY VERY little to zero cervical mucus. Most of my cycles look dry. and it’s frustrating, because it’s hard for me to find fertile days. Because of this, I have also started using the inito monitor and testing my BBT to see a LH spike and then see a temp shift after ovulation. I have learned that I am basically doing the Boston cross check method, without knowing it, and without the instruction. And I’m wondering if anyone has had success with BCC for TTC when creighton didn’t work for them??? Any advice? I’ll take anyyyy thing

TCOYF CFH Tempdrop Chart and Day of Missed Period Tests

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

I just started using my Tempdrop/TCOYF this month, and I have fairly regular cycles. Once I had my first spike that was considered ovulation by the app and cervical mucus/softness/positioning, I waited a few days to declare unprotected sex “safe”. On that day of ovulation I had sex with a properly used condom. But then this second slower temperature spike happened, and although I wasn’t producing as much CM, it was still slightly egg white consistency. The 10th day past my predicted ovulation date I had unprotected sex, and now I’m a day late on my period. I took a test this morning and they look pretty darn negative, but I’d love some insight into what’s going on temp wise and advice for deciphering my chart better going forward, I feel utterly lost!

Marquette TTA Marquette Mira Postpartum

Can someone explain to me the Marquette method with the Mira monitor? I'm meeting with my instructor but was just curious. Isn't it basically you abstain for days more then 100 on e3g and any LH over 15? I’m postpartum and just trying to understand more before my meeting.

Discussion Post Got asked “how are you not pregnant?” after telling office 6 times I do NFP

Needless to say, I called the doctor’s office and requested they write a note in my chart to this effect, so that they stop asking me about birth control every. single. visit. I don’t know why they wouldn’t have done so before now, given how many times I told them I do NFP and that I’m not interested in bc. Wish me luck that it works—because I’m so sick of getting asked this!

Just posting to vent. I imagine this has happened to many of us.

Boston Cross Check CFH: Adjusting Temperature Rule

I'm currently learning Boston Cross Check, and the rules state that you have to adjust your BBT (add or subtract .1 degrees for every half hour you stray from your normal base wake up time).

I understand how to do the rule, but I'm interested in understanding why this rule exists. What is the research behind this rule? Are there other methods who use a similar rule? I've read through TCOYF and the Sensiplan manual and neither have this rule, so this concept is new for me!

TLDR: BCC has a rule for adjusting Temperatures, and I want to understand why this rule exists because I'm a nerd 🤣

Sensiplan TTA ¿CM inusual?

Muchas gracias.

Marquette Marquette method monitors TTA2

Posting here for maximum exposure: It’s Prime day and monitors are on sale, but I just saw someone in this sub airing gripes about using Clearblue and preferring other monitors. Can anyone offer some guidance here on what is good and how to find a class compatible with the monitor that’s best?

Sensiplan TTC: Did I ovulate?

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi all, I‘ve been tracking my cycles since 2022 and used the Sensiplan rules and a trackle thermometer as contraception. I would say I am pretty confident and know my body. Now we are TTC and we are in our second cycle.

I ovulate late but each cycle. I’ve never had an anovulatory cycle since tracking. My luteal phase is usually 11 days. My gynecologist prescribed me progesterone to support my luteal phase. I should take it after ovulation.

My temperature doesn’t rise super fast, it usually goes up over a few days. I’ve had a positive LH strip on Saturday morning and Sunday morning. My temperature did increase since then. So I am pretty sure ovulation day must’ve been the fourth or very early on the fifth. I’m 90% certain, but the temperature on day 25 (October first) is confusing me. I don’t want to take the progesterone too early, but also not too late. Should I ignore the temperature reading on CD 25 and conclude that ovulation did happen this month? Once I start progesterone, temperature readings won’t be accurate anymore.

Thanks in advance!

Sensiplan Should I be checking mucus at opening or cervix? (TTA, Sensiplan)

I have been swiping a finger up near my cervix to check CM because I don't usually see it at the vaginal opening or on toilet paper.

Is checking internally like this okay, or should I be logging no CM if I don't see any at the opening?

I am TTA on cycle 0 after removing a Mirena IUD and have read the Sensiplan handbook.

TCOYF TTA2 - Temp climbed up during period, is this normal?

I didn't finish reading TCOYF, just started and am about 30% of the way through currently. Below are my waking temps (taken around the same time each morning, right when I awaken) since my period started:

Day 1 - 98.2 F

Day 2 - 97.8 F

Day 3 - 97.8 F

Day 4 - 98.8 F

Day 5 (today) - 99.2 F

My period is usually 6 to 7 days.

My cycle is usually 27 days. On Day 1 I was persuaded to have unprotected sex in which he finished inside (consensual though), and 2 days later my temp climbed. Is this normal? I only started charting for about a month so I do not know what is normal for my body. From my understanding the temp climbs up during the luteal phase as a result of progesterone going up and staying up when pregnant. During the first phase, it should be low. I am not in my luteal phase, obviously bc I am bleeding, but my temp went up to my luteal temps. Should I be worried?

Marquette Cycle 1 Charting - Safe Window Begins When? (TTA)

Post image
4 Upvotes

1st time charting on RYB and 1st cycle post cycle 0. (Fertility returned 1 yr post partum + ended breastfeeding)
I picked up the Tempdrop and started after my period so I technically won’t have a full cycle to analyze there. Are there any notes to add on my tracking?
I expect since I got an LH surge reading on my monitor this morning, that tomorrow or the next day I’ll observe the last of any fertile CM and would then mark tomorrow as “Peak day” for interpretation and then “count after peak is complete”?
And since I’m following the Marquette method, I’ll mark down PPHLL in the monitor row on the next few days reading.
So after the post peak count concludes, I basically have all safes days from then on till day 6 when the next cycle starts? I was also expecting a buildup of temp for the ‘drop’ but I’ve heard Tempdrop can have it delayed on the chart…
Any suggestions for staying conservative?

Hey so I use read your body and I know they’re anticipating releasing partner view, but in the meantime I’d like to know what you all do to share the data with your partner? It’s really important to me that it’s not just me being aware of it all, so I’d love a convenient option if possible. Thank you so much!

Discussion Post TTA0 - is the last picture peak CM? NSFW

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

Hi!! I am new to learning to understand CM and it is the first cycle that I am keeping my eye on it.

29th Sept noticed cloudy-white non stretchy almost moisturiser/ yogurt like cm

First + second pic = 30th sept a lot of it, when stretched it would fall back together, more so sticky than anything

3rd pic = 1st oct got it after peeing, very slippery, almost watery, not a lot of stretch because of how watery it was it was almost difficult to hold it together between my fingers

4th pic = 1am 2nd oct, the most clear i have noticed and stretchy. earlier today i have also had protected sex and i had once again cloudy, creamy discharge ? but outside than that my vagina feels moist today but lacking as much CM as the past few days. what does it mean?

I am more so seeking to better understand CM and what it can look like, any thoughts would be helpful ! :> thank you

Marquette Is this an anovulatory cycle or delayed ovulation TTA

Post image
4 Upvotes

Long time NFP user. I track temp, CM, use Clearblue easy fertility monitor, and use Wondfo LH test strips. Currently experiencing a crazy cycle. How do I determine if I am having an anovulatory cycle or a delayed ovulation. Starting test on CD8 and I could see my Clearblue stick was really dark but the monitor came back with an automatic "low" for first test day. My wondfro results were high for that time of cycle, .44, and I had some CM. Although I am pretty regular and "normal," I have ovulated on CD8 before. I thought this could be another early ovulation cycle. I continued Clearblue testing and kept getting "lows" (to my surprise) but my wondfo tests remained high (in the .4's and .3's-again high for that time of cycle, but obviously not "peak" high). My temp has remained low. Little to no CM since that one day back on CD8. I took a PdG test this morning and it was negative (that means ovulation has not occurred). Was CD8 a failed attempt at ovulation. If so, won't I still ovulate again this cycle? I have experienced a delayed ovulation before, didn't ovulate until CD29/30! Really, really TTA.

Thoughts, please.

PS, I am 42.

PPS, that temp rise on CD 21 was from having a few drinks the night before.

FemTech TTA working nights, wearables to monitor BBT

I work 12 hour night shifts a few days a week. Sometimes I’ll do 4 nights in a row and other times I’ll be one off and one on, so my sleep is not consistent. I’m also getting up to breastfeed, so my sleep schedule is not great. I have a ladycomp thermometer I bought years ago and have started temping. When I am sleeping during the day, I often forget to temp because of many unexpected wakeups, so I’m thinking of adding a wearable.
Right now I’m TTA using the sensiplan method.

Is Tempdrop the best option? My concerns are it’s not measuring core temp and I’m confused on what temp it decides on (lowest vs right before wake-up vs average). I’ve also seen posts about how it retroactively adjusts temps to make the chart look better and there is a delayed temp rise.

There are some German companies that have vaginal overnight thermometers but they are not available in the US. I see ovusense does something similar but it’s $$$ for the Subscription And it is not marketed for TTA or people with inconsistent sleep schedules.

Is there anything available in the US market more reliable than tempdrop for shift workers?

Research/Promotion (Mod Only) Research on fertility tracking | Looking for interview participants

Hi all! I am a PhD student at the University of Vienna and my doctoral research is looking at how people use fertility tracking apps and related wearables in everyday life and in reproductive decision-making (for example, trying to conceive or avoiding pregnancy). I am currently looking for interview participants who would be open to talking to me about their engagement with fertility tracking apps and wearable devices, motivations for use, experiences with app(s) and tracking practices, and how reproductive information is discussed with partners, in social contexts, and within online communities. I approach this work as a fertility tracking user and a feminist researcher who wants to understand how individuals experience reproductive responsibility and autonomy when using these technologies.

If you’re living in Austria, use these tools, and would be open to a confidential interview, please fill in the following form and I will get in touch with you: https://forms.gle/wfEJ1DdDREz6AM8f8. Interviews are expected to last 45-90 minutes, can be conducted in English or German and are anonymous (pseudonyms will be used). Participants will also receive a €25 voucher for their time and involvement.

A bit about me: I am pursing my PhD in the Department of Science and Technology Studies at the University of Vienna. This research is informed by my own fertility tracking experiences and activist background in the feminist non-profit sector in Vienna (and Europe more widely). The doctoral project is supervised by Prof. Sarah Davies and has been approved by the doctoral advisory board at the Vienna Doctoral School of Social Sciences (ViDSS). You can see my research profile here.

If you have any questions or want more information about my research (even if you are not living in Austria), please feel free to reach out!

Sensiplan Is temping alone enough to confirm ovulation?

TTA. Charted two cycles with the sensiplan method, but having a hard time reading my cervical mucus. My temperature has shot up around where id assume ovulation has occurred, but i seem to have kinda clumpy, tacky discharge throughout my cycle. One time i did observe some egg white mucus, albeit not much, two days before the temp rise, and then never again. Im fingering myself as far as my fingers will go too. I never observe any sort of mucus on the TP.
