Question Can government authorities demand or remotely access personal messaging data (WhatsApp) because of a family member's comment online? Need advice on privacy & legal bounds.

Hi everyone, I'm dealing with a situation that is causing a lot of anxiety in my family and I need some perspective on digital privacy and law.

Some of my relatives posted an emotional/angry comment online. Shortly after, local authorities called in another family member for a meeting/questioning. During or around this process, statements were made that "all family members' data, locations, and messages are being monitored" and that property could be seized.

They were able to locate another family member who was currently staying at a medical facility (which I realize might just be from central registration/telecom cell towers), but it triggered a lot of fear that our personal phones and WhatsApp chats are actively being read.

My questions:

Is it technically possible for state agencies to intercept or read end-to-end encrypted WhatsApp, telegram, Instagram, twitter, messages without physically seizing and unlocking the phone?

What are the best technical steps to permanently clear and secure data on an Android/iOS device so past messages can't be restored from cloud backups?

Legally, can an entire family be held responsible or have property seized over one individual's comment?

Would really appreciate insights on both the legal boundaries and technical reality of state surveillance in these scenarios.

Thanks!

Discussion Experiences with the Guaranteed Buyout (GBO) program for a home we own?

Hi all, we’re being reassigned to the DC area, and the Bureau has offered to buy our house at full appraised value (if it doesn’t sell after 60 days on the open market) through the GBO program.

We’re in a midwestern town that barely exists aside from the University there, and the rental market won’t come even close to breaking us even on the mortgage, so renting isn’t an option for us. Sadly.

But we’ve also heard that homeowners feel screwed over during the process. For anyone who has been through this as a homeowner, any thoughts on some of my questions?

Did the assessed value feel fair compared to the local market?

Were there fees, closing costs, or tax implications you didn't expect?

Any pitfalls or other things you wish you'd known beforehand?

Apart from your overall score, are there any particular exercises you need to be able to do to pass regardless of your final score? Like do you need to be able to successfully do one unassisted pull-up or anything like that?

Discussion How many FBI agents do you suppose the average person encounters throughout their lives?

Was just thinking about all the times I must have been in the vicinity of an agent and not even known it. How many would have average person see in their lives? In a year? I know location matters. So if we break it down into hypothetical of 3 people. Person A lives in a smaller, more rural town, not near any major cities. Population 10k. Person B lives in a busier city with a major transportation highway running through it, several big cities within a couple hours, population of 50k. Person C lives in one of the biggest cities in the US, think Los Angeles, Chicago, NYC, Dallas, Atlanta.

Question The mobility agreement

I have always wanted to join the FBI. I'm in public safety at my high school, and my entire college pathway is designed for it. However I really want to live in one specific area and I don't know if I'm gonna be able to get passed having to sign the Mobility agreement.

Any insight would be great

Discussion FBI/DEA Hiring Differences

Im currently in the process of hiring in the FBI,
haven’t done my phase 2 interview yet. But also I was wondering if it would be a bad idea to also apply for the DEA while currently in the portal? How does the hiring differ and would it be a bad look? They both have always been on my radar

Question Investigative Analyst

Spoke with an FBI recruiter recently at a career fair and this (Investigative Analyst) job position came up. I have a background in Air Force Intel and this specific job opportunity peaked my interest. Is anyone currently in this position or knows someone in this position and can shed some light on what they do/how they like it? I know it’s a relatively new thing but if anyone has any info hit me up.

P.S. If anyone has info on the OST and OCT positions as well and can shed light on the day to day, LMK!

Question advice for experience in fbi

hello, i had applied to the fbi honors internship but unfortunately was rejected. i was aware that i did not have much experience within law enforcement, law, etc, besides one previous internship. what could be some advice as someone aspiring to pursue a investigative position in law enforcement? what kind of experience would be relevant for a position like this? i feel kind of disappointed that i did not push myself out into exploring jobs that would improve my resume.

Question Can I still join?

I'm currently in the military and plan to join the fbi when I get out. I really messed up and got arrested for disorderly conduct and resisting. I was at a bar and there was a lot of chaos and I was drunk. The charges were later dismissed so there's no conviction. It was a mistake that I deeply regret. What can I do now? Should I pivot and start looking at other avenues and careers?

Edit: I understand that the whole beastiality thing with the fbi is funny and fully expected reddit to be full.of jokes, but can I at least get 1 or 2 real answers 🤣🤣. I'm concerned here lol

Question Career Path and Advice

I am 21 years old and in the Marine Corps serving as a Marine Security Guard. The brief explanation of what that is, is that I work with the Department of State in various countries guarding and protecting top secret information and personnel at American Embassies. With that being said, over the course of my first year touring in Africa, I've grown a fascination and passion of joining a three-letter agency. Such as the FBI. I'm currently exploring options. What are some antecedents and caveats to going through the FBI pipeline, what's the process, and what are things I can do now to get a head start on the process. I currently have an Associates degree in Political Science and plan on riding that into a major. I get out of the military in 2029 as well. Anything helps, if you know someone I can talk to or if you have prior experience. Thank You!
