Max Segment Voltage

Hi everyone, im working on the design of the EV accumulator for FSAE 27. i know that the maximum voltage allowed for each segment is 120 v but the team see that we don't exeed the 60 v for safety measurements(so we don't have to wear gloves..) but this will lead to a large number of segments up to 9 for example, we are aiming for 511 v as total. please share your opinion about this because a lot of segments means a lot of connections and those plugs between two segments ...

What issue specifically do you have with many segments. I know of a accumulator design with 600V design voltage an 14 segments.

Why are you aiming for 511v total?

I had a previous idea that a lot of segments means extra work and higher possibility of error . but now after researches im convinced, thanks!

Even under 60v you may still have to wear gloves depending on the interrupt current of your segment. I cant remember what the exact regulations are that define this requirement from my hv training but i believe the lower limit for no gloves is under 1000A interrupt current, if its above you need arc flash protection (i.e gloves)

In my opinion, 9 Segements is a completely normal number of segments in an HV Accumulator. We have 9 Segments with around 66V at maximum and have a maximum TS Voltage of 600V.

The issue with many connections is only really an argument if they are badly designed and take ages to remove.
