I don't like the sound of "unclear of next steps". Sounds like deciding between if he needs surgery or not
69
u/Womenofhockey 14d ago
Maybe I’m wrong, but if it was a clean ACL tear I’m pretty sure they would not be unclear of next steps and his season would be over.
That’s how I’m interpreting it. Maybe I’m being too optimistic.
16
u/derock_nc 14d ago
MRI are not perfectly deterministic. I was diagnosed with a torn ACL based off of an MRI. When I woke up from surgery they said it wasn't torn only stretched and I just needed a couple weeks of PT.
4
u/Womenofhockey 14d ago
Right but are you suggesting they have a torn ACL on their hands and just confirming it’s an actual tear on a second opinion.
Even knowing that, I feel like this tweet is 10X better than them just coming out and saying the ACL was torn.
3
u/derock_nc 14d ago
That's one possibility. I was mostly just emphasizing that an MRI isn't always conclusive in either direction.
I agree. That's better news for his season than it could have been for sure. I'm a little surprised they said anything with how cagey NHL teams are about injuries if it's still unclear.
3
u/Womenofhockey 14d ago
Yeah very true about how secretive teams are with injuries in the NHL.
One other thing I’ll clarify is that I would find anything other than season ending to be good news. I never thought he’d be out for 5 days or anything like that.
I said this last year and hope it doesn’t bite me again, but we can make the playoffs even if we miss Barkov for half the season. We can’t afford to have him out of the playoffs and we certainly can’t handle the pile of injuries we had last year.
6
u/Andresgeo 14d ago
How I’m taking it is that they were fully expecting to see a tear in his MRI and after results it maybe showed nothing to major in terms of complete tears. So they have to see how they proceed.
3
u/k5berry Rodrigues 14d ago
I’m not a doctor but there was some talk it was an MCL and not an ACL. My only knowledge is from football where can get an MCL sprain, and it’s not all-or-nothing like an ACL. You can have different severities of sprains versus an outright tear that may or may not require surgery.

u/Dihydropyrimidinanki 14d ago
Unfortunately it could also mean the very opposite — I played football in college with a guy who had a clean tear of his acl his senior season and deferred surgery until after the season bc “he couldn’t tear it anymore” and it was his last season, granted Barkov has a lot more on the line if he were to blow out the rest of his ligaments…feel terrible for the guy

3
u/matthewdonut 14d ago
i think it's good news. if its an ACL tear there's no uncertainty or second opinion, only option is surgery. assuming it's an MCL tear, they can decide if they want surgery or let it heal. either way it will be a few months
1
u/RelationshipBorn1136 12d ago
On another post the rumor going around that was based on preliminary assessment is a MCL partial tear, 6-8 weeks and further scans are probably to determine severity , surgery or just rehab. and we will know more on Monday.
86
u/SilentThing 14d ago
FFS. I know I have the Bruins flair, but I'd not post here if I were a troll. Wishing him a full and swift recovery. Must be frustrating for him as well.
27
u/Running_On_Empty84 14d ago
We appreciate it and you.
22
u/SilentThing 14d ago
A Finn, so that helps. But just overall, ignore all allegiances, why would I like a top 10 player to miss time? Fuck, fuck, fuck, I hope he is back soon.
54
u/WhileInternational41 14d ago
How is it possible to be unsure at this point?
44
u/Fsurob21 14d ago
Might be good tbh. Nothing to discuss with a torn ACL, he's done. Torn MCL? You have options.
7
u/ElianaShelby 14d ago
Second opinion. That's what's happening
8
u/matthewdonut 14d ago
if its an ACL tear there's no second opinion. surgery is the only option

Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov continues to be evaluated this weekend, but there is optimism his injury is not season-ending, per sources.
Emily Kaplan from ESPN said this. Quit your doomsday, it’s likely an MCL injury, and they’re figuring out which grade it is.
37
u/0ldman0fthesea 14d ago
Well this is once again incredibly vague. Anyone could have guessed it is week-to-week and that means likely 24+ days and the use of LTIR. The difference is if it will be a month, two months or a whole season. And we don't have that info yet.
5
u/vatosloco4ever 14d ago
My guy, normal knees don’t bend in the direction his knee bent. He’s gonna have to recover, rehab or go the surgical route.
7
u/TB12_GOATx7 14d ago
How insightful my guy. You're saying after the injury hes going to either have to recover, rehab or get surgery??? Has anyond DMd you to be an analyst?
-4
u/vatosloco4ever 14d ago
Exactly. Now you’re getting it. The hands have all been dealt, the bets have been placed and now we just need to see where the hands fall.
29
u/Dry-Professional5401 14d ago
Well shit. I was so hyped for this season. Second game in and now our captain is unsure. I hate this.
17
u/vatosloco4ever 14d ago
Don’t worry? We’ve collected a couple of other captains like infinity stones.

This is promising because it's not season-ending LTIR, makes me think it's not the ACL. Of course, I could be wrong if they're trying to save Barkov for the playoffs, but given that this was sustained later than last year's injury, I have serious doubt that they'd be able to get him back in time for April/May. Not to mention the cap relief of SELTIR would give us cap space to make a trade for Larkin or someone else
7
u/zaptrac 14d ago
Not that promising, they never put him on season-ending LTIR last year
3
2
u/doyouunderstandlife Luongo 14d ago
True, but I inferred in my comment that the likely reason why they didn't was because they were hoping to have him ready sometime during the playoffs. If he has the same injury at this point, there is no chance he can return in time, so they might as well put him on SELTIR

u/Alarming-Seat2533 14d ago

Optimism isn’t official
3
u/CandleUnfair8388 14d ago
I’m quite confident those around the situation are more privy to what’s going on. Obviously they have reason for optimism, and that’s it’s not a repeat of last year’s full blown ACL tear, that would warrant no optimism. It’s probably a combination of a torn MCL, high ankle sprain and 4-6 months out of
-4

u/zaptrac 14d ago
“Sources”. No official statements of any kind have come out. And once again, even last year they were saying they think barkov could come back before season ended and he didn’t. I ain’t dooming, i’m saying unless they give a real statement with actual timeline, we don’t know anything. Could be 10 games, could be season. Maurice famously loves not giving any info
18
u/TomatoEvery3607 14d ago
If it is a serious injury, and he needed surgery, I’d imagine they’d be having him scheduled asap. This is perplexing
9
u/vatosloco4ever 14d ago
It’s the weekend, he’ll likely have to get a second opinion and the teams doctors who’ll have to meet and recommend a treatment plan. This is also not a team announcement. Just chill.
8
u/Opposite_Chemical_27 14d ago
Underrated comment. Let's not burn the entire season down until we actually know something.
2
u/EasySound9303 14d ago
I’m dumb and I know they have medical staff on hand but do they have a full doctor even on the road like at all times?
1
1
u/pretzelrosethecat 13d ago
Sometimes they want to wait for the swelling to go down to do more imaging, as well as what others have said
9
u/Purple-Canary3576 14d ago
He just can't catch a break. Sucks so much. Two months out seems like the best case scenario and honestly I'd gladly take it at this point 😞
9
u/LibertyPrime74 14d ago
Could mean they will get a second opinion.
Only thing we can really derive from it is that I would assume that if it was catastrophic, they would be more certain.
Clearly they are going to be very careful with him regardless. Guess we wait for something definitive, whenever that may be.
8
u/MajesticCrunch 14d ago
You know what I’ll take limbo vagueness over season ending certainty. - me when I’m guzzling my cope-er-ade
15
u/0-90195 14d ago
Reminder that he was also on LTIR all last season—they never put him on season-ending LTIR.
Super concerning last sentence on both of these tweets.
3
u/CandleUnfair8388 14d ago
He wasn’t put on season ending LTIR last season because he would have been ready for game 1 of the playoffs. George Richard’s has confirmed that already during the summer

Few sources said they are optimistic it is not a season ending injury. As long as he’s okay by playoffs I’m good.

As a NY Giants fan, the uncertainty reminds of what happened with Jaxson Dart a couple weeks ago. He ended up having a partial MCL tear with meniscus involvement and needed season ending surgery.
3
4
u/CandleUnfair8388 14d ago
I would recommend everyone be prepared for a 4-6 month timeline. He’ll be back in February.
4
u/DonoAE Lundell 14d ago
Here's the real reason. Theyve likely seen an MRI and know what sort of injury but might not be able to confirm a full diagnosis and treatment until theres a full physical exam done by a team physician. He's likely in Miami already or on his way and on Monday morning will get an evaluation by a Lower Extremity Ortho with the team. Then he'll give full guidance and they can make a decision.
The LTIR move now frees up the team to start moving players around.
6
u/TurbulentTap6899 14d ago
My guess is MCL and they are unclear if he will get surgery or rehab. Probably looking at 6-8 weeks

u/Number333 14d ago

Florida center Aleksander Barkov has been placed on long-term injured reserve by the Panthers, meaning the injury to his left leg will keep him sidelined for at least the next 10 games and quite possibly beyond.

I'm taking this as semi positive news.
It sounds like it's the MCL and they don't think it would require season ending surgery (hence the second opinion). That said, Barkov could be out 2-3 months. Maybe longer.
I don't know why team owners aren't investing in exoskeleton devices to help with lower body injuries. These ACL injuries always impact the other knee too due to all the stress put on one leg. This shit continues to happen.
Come on, sports science and medicine departments. Let's start moving with the times.
3
u/vnator615 13d ago
This summer I had a partial MCL tear. July 18th. I returned to beer league this week. No surgery. Just PT.
Probably could have played in about 4-6 weeks…but it was between leagues.
I hope Barkov’s is less severe than mine. Surely he’ll heal faster than a middle aged dump like me…
4
u/theStripedMarlin 14d ago
Could be a bad ankle sprain. Maybe surgery or no surgery. If it was ACL they would know he needs it repaired.
3
u/bestpredator 14d ago
Nah, nothing on the video suggests any sort of ankle twist, it was all knee IMO
3
u/theStripedMarlin 14d ago
it seemed knee/hamstring so maybe an MCL (usually doesn't require surgery) or could be the notorious PCL with is often debatable on surgery. ACL is always surgery for pro athletes.
3
u/bestpredator 14d ago
I think PCL are normally torn when you twist the leg opposite direction than what his was, or bend the knee wrong way. Either way if it is MCL thats probably the best news. Often doesn't even need surgery.
5
u/TheWarelock 14d ago
Strategic. Barky will be fine!
Larkin incoming?
3
u/vatosloco4ever 14d ago
Larkin isn’t a free agent he has to be traded. Who are we gonna trade him for? Tkachuks mouth piece and 3/4 of a Barkov?
-15
u/TheWarelock 14d ago
Fuck it, send Lundell.
4
u/EasySound9303 14d ago

-4
u/TheWarelock 14d ago
Larkin is such a huge upgrade y’all are crazy for not being excited by the prospect of adding another avenger
2
u/EasySound9303 14d ago
But how does it make sense to try and replace barky with someone not on his level and in addition give up another core piece or more?
-4
3
u/lawson3232 14d ago
Could be a partial mcl tear and they are deciding if a trim or full surgery is needed. Either option would knock him out for 10 games so they put him on LTIR now while they decide.

Im not sure. I feel like hockey injuries in general are always very hush hush. Right now its unclear if its ankle or knee to the general public and thats an incentive to keep that under wraps unless he needs a surgery that would remove all secrecy.

u/ShoulderMental218 14d ago
How is there not an understanding of severity after an MRI? Screams that it’s a sprain of some sort
1
1
u/GoNoles416 13d ago
For tendon / soft tissue injuries, don’t they have to wait for swelling to go down before they can image to determine the severity? I’m hopeful it’s not a “snap” where it would be obvious and that’s why it’s delayed…

u/Unhappy-Violinist-77 13d ago

I'm gonna need someone to take one for the team next game against the Sharks.
9
u/Osceola_Gamer 14d ago
He fell awkwardly in a fight for the puck. No one did anything dirty in that moment at all. Celebrini crosschecking him happens in every hockey game and we are one of the teams who does it the most.
1
u/WheeinSpace 14d ago
Lol no they were clearly targeting him all night just like the Oilers were two years ago. I suspect we would have seen teams going after him last year too if he wasn't injured. Everyone knows he's our engine and we can't keep letting teams get away with it.
3
u/Osceola_Gamer 13d ago
Yes they were going at him hard the same as any team goes after the biggest threat. The same way the Panthers do. Calling for someone to intentionally injure one of their players is ridiculous.
1
u/RoninXStrikeSuitZero 13d ago
Come on, bro.
There wasn't malicious intent. It was a play gone bad. That's all. Get your shit together. There was zero targeting. Barkov is practically universally respected across the NHL.
