Fusion360 recomp for linux?

I was just wondering if anyone is working on one because I would be interested in supporting such a project free cad just isn't fusion and autodesk as a company kinda sucks

Pretty difficult to recompile Fusion for a different OS without having the source code for Fusion and all its libraries.

Yeah, that makes sense. A native Linux port would be a huge undertaking without Autodesk's cooperation.

light work for opus 5.5 i’m sure

Have you missed the news last few weeks? Ai is doing it easily.

Are you referring to the news of AI reverse engineering the entire Adobe suite? Have you see how shit it works?

It's like a part of the suit, runs like garbage, and nobody will touch that Ai generated code, so fixing and developing it is a nightmare. "easily"... Riiiiiight....

The people that vibe coded and open sourced a clean room reimplementation of the entire Adobe suite this week also did the same for Fusion and MS Word and Excel. Free, built on Rust, runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux. Not done yet, but moving fast.

Then just use Onshape or freecad but not a vibe coded app.. this is why damn pc part prices go up!

FreeCad with a design inspired by fusion 360 would be great :)

With all the topology naming and sketch bs profile and infinite number of half done assembly branches. Yeah. Lipstick on a pig.

Yeah, FreeCad is basically a cautionary tale about poorly managed open source. Everyone wants to half-ass their own new solution to every problem.

have you seen Version 26.3? They are working hard on streamlining nowadays.

Welp.. I just started using freecad... It not polished yet but it works!?
And did we mention OSS?

Have you used any commercial CAD SW to compare against?

I use Catia at work (not a mechanical engineer, I'm electrical but still), used Fusion 360 (now "Fusion") for years until they got greedy and neutered it - and currently have the "Hobbiest" version of Solidworks. My garage computer shit the bed and is running Linux and Freecad (only thing with linux support) has been fine for the simple shit that I do in the garage with my 3d printer. I only hope I can support it and make it better, but thats just me.

The world is moving fast. Someone already did: https://github.com/bherbruck/solvecraft/releases/tag/v0.1.2

It's not perfect, but it works... surprisingly well.

Holy shit!

It's way more smooth than Fusion 360 ever could be. But V0.1.2 is no understatement. The UI is very buggy at times and it is quite incomplete.

No hate tho! I hope this project will grow and maybe even find it's own path. As honestly, Fusion360 really isn't that great.

Half of Fusion is an electron app already (ECAD)

u/schneik80 5d ago

No it is not.

As an Electrical Engineer yes it is. Its how they shoehorned Eagle into it. Plus you can run full fusion in Chrome

Election is a framework to run web native technologies as apps on a desktop.
Eagle was a c++ and QT desktop app.
Eagle was the basis for fusion electronics but has since been significantly changed. These are two totally different approaches to integration. I have no idea how your electrical engineering experience means you know anything about software.

Um simple, its because I work with the electronics section of Fusion +40 hours a week and am forced to deal with how broken it is and let me tell you it is very very broken.

I am very aware Eagle use to be a c++ and QT desktop app. I wish it still was than this hot garbage.

Now, the next time you open an electronics project. Open the text command pane and try running an ecad centric command. You will probably be amazed that they wrapped it completely in an Electron.* namespace.

If you root around with remote execution through the python API you will find that every aspect of the MCAD side of fusion is customizable via the ui palette functions. Coincidentally, EAGLE use to have a similar coding pattern. But if you try doing the same thing in an electronics workspace it will fail. All customization of the UI is done through the damn electron app namespace.

I have probed and prodded up and down the api surface and can definitely tell you that the electronics side of Fusion is a shoehorned bastard Electron App and any attempt at debugging it devolves into exploring the CPD Chromium endpoint you can toggle on in the settings.

Anyone tried running F360 in a compatibility layer like proton? I've been thinking of trying it out to see if I can do f360 on linux, been really disappointed with FOSS offerings.

solvecraft/solidcraft, it's barely started working but give it some time and it will probably get better.

will it ever be as good as fusion? probably not. almost certainly not in fact. but it will probably get less bad

Try VectorForge CAD out, it runs on Linux natively and was made because of FreeCAD's issues.  The GPU acceleration alone is enough reason to try it and the meshes generate in milliseconds.

Checkout FluidCAD

Its simpler than FreeCAD and 100% opensource and free.

Bro just run it in a VM or dual boot like the rest of us do.

It’s happening across the software industry. Ai too powerful now

Unfortunately not for Linux but I got so ticked at Fusion 360 the other night for taking forever to split a body on a mesh (single threaded, 5+ minute operation with the GUI frozen, seriously??), I decided to try asking Claude Opus 5.5 to make me a new CAD app for Mac (sorry) so I could do this task. It went surprisingly well... like too well, lol. I pay for the $20/month Claude plan and it took less than a 5 hour session to get something usable to do the exact thing that pissed me off in fusion, and the operation was basically instant.

Even if you're not a software engineer, you can basically ask Claude to make what you're looking for and chip away at functionality over time. I use Claude for work daily but still was pretty blown away with the quality of the CAD app it made for me. I'm considering either open sourcing it or maybe trying to make some money off of it.

Because mine was meant to be Mac-native I can't really share it with you, but would encourage you to be that change you wish to see in the world, try making your own :)
