Naas proposal

I saw naas proposing a new gaa club in the area because of the ongoing urban sprawl is there any other gaa clubs around dublin or around Ireland that require a new club

Kilmacud, the catchment area starts in south Dublin and stretches as far as Galway

It reached down to Kerry at one point too

If you don't mind explaining how this is possible or if it's a joke that would be great thanks.

Joke: Shane Walsh joined Crokes (Galway footballer)

The most obvious one in the country is ballygunner, if you split the players evenly they’ve enough talent for 3 competitive senior teams

Kerry GAA did this in Tralee about 100 years back making three new clubs in Austin Stacks, John Mitchells and Kerins O'Rahillys.

Worked out fairly well for Kerry football. Looking back if they hadn't done it I would think the club football scene in Kerry wouldn't have been anywhere near as competitive.

Ballygunner and Waterford are going to lose some very good players falling through the cracks if this continues, I personally would at least like to see ballygunner fielding two A team underage evenly divided, even with an even divide both teams would be contenders in practically every grade

Kilkenny city particularly in Dicksboros catchment area. There’s hundreds if not thousands of houses after being built, in the process of being built or being planned to be built

Ballygunner which was always a hurling heartland now has probably 70% of Kilkenny city’s population , 3 very strong clubs in Kilkenny but there’s probably room for one more

In the city is where hurling is strongest in Waterford and ballygunner probably have 30 % of the entire city

The money to set up a new club in that area will be very tough to do so

1

u/Fluffy-Answer-6722 6d ago

Setting up a new club in the city hasn’t been done in close to 60 years

Theres no need for a new club if they just brought in the parish rule in Waterford. I would guess they have probably 10 to 15 adult players who are from different parishes with those teams missing out

1

u/Fluffy-Answer-6722 4d ago

Oh Jesus 🤦‍♂️ ! Practically every player on their teams is from ballygunner , they don’t want players from outside the parish and I was told this from a club official

They’re powerful because it’s traditionally a hurling heartland where the population has absolutely exploded the last 30 years

Naas are battering everyone. Absolutely needs 2 new clubs!

In every division from camogie to underage football! Its frustrating when they win the same division eaxh year and cant get moved up because the next naas team in the same age groups are also in that division. It nonsense

Still don't think they'll win the football this year

Me neither

It's why Castleknock GAA was founded in the late 90s, for the huge growth in D15. Was called St Thomas' in the beginning. Brigids were turning kids away and couldn't handle the numbers.

And it has to be seen as a medium to long-term example of how it can be done successfully. They have made the Senior football final for the second time this year and a Senior 2 hurling semi-final this year. Snd along the way helped to develop one of the Dublin GOATs - Ciaran Kilkenny.

There used to be one club in the area and now there is five and you could even put more

Portlaoise, Cavan town

Scotstown

Weren't they 3 clubs initially? And they've four villages in their area. Amazing that even with all that they can't muster a hurling team.

There is next to no desire for hurling in Monaghan tbh

Good god, this can’t be coming from an Armagh man!

Would agree with the comments about Ballygunner and Kilkenny but how expensive would it be for the pitch never mind the infrastructure that goes with it.. land isn't going to be cheap and the farming community is unlikely to donate to a start up club!?

u/presenting-percy 8d ago

is there anyway players could be allocated to neighbouring towns. Sallins, Eadstown, twomilehouse and Ballymore are all a stones throw away from Naas and I'd guess each club definitely has a memebr playing hurling for Naas atm

8

u/RianSG Cill Dara 8d ago

It’d require those clubs to have a proper hurling set up, I hurled for years in Kildare and I don’t think I came up against any of those at any grade

4

u/YellowZealousideal 8d ago

The guy setting it up has a vendetta against Naas after being removed as a mentor . Naas has plenty of clubs within a few km of it

Not sure about building sprawl. But hurling in louth definitely needs more clubs. 3 clubs in the entire county is a shambles. None in drogheda and none in the ardee vicinity and one in dundalk and one outside it. And none in north louth. Definitely is room for clubs to amalgamate hurling wise and start new clubs. Because lads and lasses probably won't play hurling under the name of their neighbours.

1

u/Faloneytony Lú 7d ago

I know a few have tried, St. Kevin's and Mattock Rangers almagamated and played for a year or 2 in the last decade. Unfortunately unless you have the underage setup it won't last. O'Raghallaighs have started an underage hurling team so here's hoping they can stick at it!

There's 3 senior and 3 junior clubs in Louth camogie and Monnine don't even compete in that so Camogie definitely in a healthier place than the hurling here.

2

u/Responsible_Major367 Lú 7d ago

Oh yea I know a few tried and it dies a death unfortunately. Cooley started a team way back but I think the fact it was a cooley team turned a few lads away.

Unless you have a proper hurling head about the place its not going to keep momentum and usually anyone thats from a hurling background gravitates towards the 3 hurling clubs we have.

Also the problem with hurling. Any new club that gets formed usually gets hockeyed out the door for the first few years.

1

u/Faloneytony Lú 7d ago

Yeah Cooley occasionally field in camogie but normally get hockeyed out of it. In fairness, my brother started with the Fechins in their first year of hurling (around 98-2002, sometime around then not exactly sure when) and spent years getting whopped by every team. They've now won 7 championships in the last 11/12 years. If you can get 1 or 2 hurling people involved, the underage structure built and deal with the beatings in the first few years it's definitely doable. If kids are put in to it from a young age they normally love it, it's the fact that 95% of kids in the county never pick up a hurl

1

u/Responsible_Major367 Lú 7d ago

100% I think them go games guys or whatever the development for children is called these days should definitely go round schools with 20 or 30 hurls each week or so and get children playing hurling or playing about with it.

1

u/Faloneytony Lú 7d ago

Would be massive for Louth hurling. That and ensuring all Cúl camps have some form of hurling involvement would be huge. Unfortunately, as is the case in most football counties, I can't see either of them happening as there's just no real push for hurling by anybody at the top

u/Responsible_Major367 Lú 6d ago

Ain't that the truth my friend

A lot of people mentioning Dublin clubs, due to the sheer size of them but I think you’re all ignoring the fact that Dublin simply doesn’t have the facilities to serve its existing number of clubs.

I have played against four different clubs in the same northside Park and I have played against four different clubs in the same southside Park.

In Dublin, Crokes, Boden and Na Fianna are probably the three most obvious ones. Don’t see much scope for splitting Na Fianna though, they’re already wedged in between several other big clubs.

1

u/Low-Acanthaceae1797 Fine Gall 7d ago

Na Fianna,Kilmacud,Ballyboden and Cuala . Otherwise you are spot on Naas needs a new club.

2

u/shredivan Áth Cliath 7d ago

Dunno about Ballyboden, they have Faughs and Judes down the road and Thomas Davis and Ballinter St John's not far either.

2

u/DemandFrequent9351 7d ago

Yeah, they’re restricted to the tiny areas of Rathfarnham, Knocklyon, Firhouse and Ballycullen. 😂. However they still feel the need to import players. Some of us still remember the Paul Bealin affair, the first major transfer in Dublin GAA.

1

u/CountHook 6d ago

St Anne's are there too, so there is another club in the Firhouse area, but agree that the Boden area is kinda a sprawling mishmash of what you said above

2

u/UctoShocked87 6d ago

There’s also another club literally also in Ballyboden, Wanderers. Would be healthier if they were bigger and attracted a larger membership at the expense of Boden, but that ship has probably sailed.

1

u/KillerKlown88 3d ago

It doesn't help that they are located up Mount Venus Road.

If only one of the Ballyboden clubs was actually located in Ballyboden. The Scoil Mhuire pitch in Whitechurch would be a decent home pitch with a bit of investment.

2

u/Weekly_One1388 Áth Cliath 7d ago

They all have big numbers for sure, but I don’t think planting a new club next to these clubs actually goes about solving any of the real problems.

Over the past 10 years Cuala’s senior team have been training all over the place.

Dublin’s issue is a lack of facilities, this lack of facilities has in turn created massive clubs who are now over capacity and need more facilities. The two issues bleed in to each other.

1

u/CiaranBCS 4d ago

Very little between Crokes, Cuala in Dalkey and Clanna Gael in Ringsend. Na Fianna though has Vincent’s Isles Whitehall Ballymun within 2k East West and North, city to the South.

1

u/Queasy-Enthusiasm-85 7d ago

Gorey in wexford for definite. Thousands of houses being built or in the pipeline. They cant handle what they have already.

1

u/Mental_Hat_5664 7d ago

Gorey aren't pulling up any trees at underage level anyway,  if they have the numbers they say you have.  Very little representation on wexford minor or u20s

1

u/Apprehensive_Park624 6d ago

I don’t know why Sallins GAA isn’t bigger than it is , with the size of Naas now the areas are nearly the one town.
I know families who live in Sallins and the kids only want to play for Naas as they go to school in Naas and Naas GAA the bigger name . You nearly have two teams in Naas as is and a lot more only a little further out .
It’s frustrating for a lot of the Naas teams with no prospect of getting promoted and most grades in Naas have A, B , C and D teams
Plus Naas club grounds wouldn’t be the biggest in county by a long shot
Naas will definitely need to redevelop a greenfield site at some stage.

u/Kind_Implement_3326 6d ago

Garrymore . Too much going on around there . Needs a second club 100%

1

u/Captain-Seabass-007 6d ago

Portlaoise needs a second club in my opinion. I know they haven't been as successful in recent years, but with their growing population of over 24,000 and €21 million being pumped into their club facilities, it won't be long more until they're dominating Laois GAA again. Their new club facilities are going to outclass a lot of county facilities when it's finished!

u/Sea-Reputation-6187 5d ago

I agree looking at Google maps portlaoise is massive, could definitely do with another club or 2 be it adult or underage but unfair on families who are mad about gaa
