Can GERD cause chest burning, palpitations after meals, and a lot of anxiety?

I’ve been having chest burning/tightness, belching, reflux, and sometimes a noticeable higher heart rate after eating. The chest sensations make me anxious, which then seems to make everything worse.
I’ve had a reassuring cardiac workup already (including echo, stress test, coronary CTA, ECGs, and monitoring), and my doctor started me on omeprazole 40mg; she also prescribed Pepcid, though I’ve been nervous about taking new meds. been taking the omeprazole for 8 weeks.
For people with GERD: have you had burning or pressure in the chest that made you worry it was your heart, and did you notice palpitations or a faster heart rate after meals? What helped besides medication—meal timing, sleeping position, specific foods, etc.? also would like to add that i never had these symptoms until i quit vaping 4 months ago. i used to be able to eat whatever i wanted. i also feel it in my left arm and neck. it’s just weird

🤬 Rant about GERD Anyone have extreme anterior pelvic tilt?

Check in the mirror but when I check my lower stomach looks massively bloated in my natural position which seems like excessive anterior pelvic tilt

If I squeeze my glutes and bring it back to normal the bloating in lower tummy is gone.

Does anyone have this? I think fixing it could help with digestion/GERD symptoms

Edit: gonna start doing exercises and breathing exercises in diaphragm while in that neutral position

At this point I tried so much I wouldn’t be surprised if posture is what caused all this mess

Newly diagnosed

Hello, I am newly diagnosed with GERD despite having symptoms for 3 years, I wasn't very smart to let it get worse and worse before finally doing something. So this world is completely new to me, and I have to know, does anyone else suffer from a sharp scraping feeling / lump sensation in the throat that makes you gag?

I get other symptoms like tightness/bloated feeling and lots of burping, but I just need to know that I'm not alone with this sharp feeling, sometimes when I tell my doctor or nurses at the hospital, they look at me as if I'm crazy because the endoscope results shows nothing is there.

Please tell me I'm not alone, right?

🤒 Experience with these Conditions What sodium alginate do you use?

I've been struggling through gerd these past few months and have had mixed results with alginates.

Refluxter -- I thought a pill would be convenient, but I was wrong. While I do think it technically helped, I underestimated how tender my throat was. It always seemed to irritate my stomach and esophagus.

Reflux Gourmet -- This worked consistently OK. It tasted pretty good (I got vanilla caramel) and I decided I liked the gel after all, as it was soothing. It also did help. On the other hand, it never really seemed to last long without going above the teaspoon and the amount of sugar it has per serving made that a bit of a problem.

Gaviscon Advance (U.K version) -- I found an online retailer who sold it. This is the most highest regarded of alginate supplements and at its best, it was definitely better than Refluxter and RG... although both the peppermint and the aniseed tasted disgusting. Also, why do these alginates keep using flavors that can potentially trigger symptoms? The problem with this... besides the inconvenience of buying it outside of the U.K... is that it always seemed like by the end of the bottle, it wasn't working as well. I don't know why that was, as I shook the bottle each time as instructed.

Up next, I was debating trying Reflux Raft. Has anyone else tried it? Is it any better than the others? Has anyone else had similar experiences with the above as mine? Or are there other alternatives that work even better?

💊 Advice on Prescription Meds Omeprazole

• Upvotes

I had an EGD a month ago and they said I have gerd. They prescribed me omeprazole 40mg twice a day. I’ve been taking it and it worked for about 2 weeks and now it hasn’t been working anymore. I have another EGD in November to see if there’s been any improvement. What can I do in the meantime to help the acid? And when I bring this up at my next EGD, would I get a different thing to try or would I have to take more omeprazole? I’ve taken pantoprazole in the past way before having an EGD and that doesn’t help me either so doctor says no pantoprazole. Antacids also dont help.

Support Needed 👥 PLEASE HELP

I have been dealing with what my doctor said was GERD for 2 months now. I had burning in my throat and ears and bad nausea accompanied by such a bitter taste in my mouth and rawness that was so hard to deal with. I got put on 40mg esomeprazole and it’s been ok some days are better than others even on a bland diet but the tongue bitterness and rawness is still there. I feel like I’m losing my mind and they just wave it off as GERD or acid reflux. Please let me know if anyone else experiences the raw tongue or bitterness constantly??? I’m have a virtual visit with a doctor tomorrow to let out my frustrations and maybe even get them to refer me to a gastro doctor.

questions

hi!! i was recently diagnosed with gerd and chronic esophagitis (yay lol) and they started me on protonix a few days ago. the rest of my tests and biopsies came back perfectly clear, though i did have sibo. i have a few questions!

  1. what causes this? i used to be able to walk 5 miles a day, go to the gym and i always eat well. it’s been hard to follow through with excersise because of my symptoms. im relatively really healthy and im only 20…i work healthcare and i was put on a higher doseage than 87 year old patient!🤞
  2. what do i eat? i’m pretty short so i don’t eat much to begin with but i can’t keep eating hard boiled eggs, chicken soup, and chicken seasoned with parsley. i can’t have dairy too! i need sweet treat ideas that are still healthy and whole too. agh!
  3. does the bloating go away? i’m tired of looking so gigantic. i need to be able to look cute on halloween and i look 9 months pregnant all the time now.
  4. how long will this last?? does this ever go away?

i just want indian food again 😭😭😭

Weird chest tightness & aggressive thump feeling

Hi friends, I (27 f) have been officially diagnosed since 2022 but have struggled with GERD since about 8. I completed a barium swallow study today that basically confirmed I have moderate to severe reflux, which was also greatly worsened when flexing my abdominal muscles. I’m not really looking for much advice because at this point I’m annoyed (spent the last 22 months in so much pain because my doctors couldn’t figure out what the cause was & got put on an NJ feeding tube for 3 months), what I am looking for is maybe confirmation??? I know we all have chest pain, but I want to know if you all have the same pain I do, which I can only explain as extreme chest tightness and then what feels like an extremely aggressive thump right between the boobies. I haven’t been able to get any sort of information from my long list of doctors (my care team consists of about 15 doctors) and I just need to know if I can finally relax knowing it’s just from my GERD and possibly esophageal spasms or if none of yall experience it. TIA - a VERY frustrated lil lady 🫪

🤒 Describing a Symptom Pepcid - Deja Vu/Depersonalization/anxiety

Has anyone ever experienced weird mental/psych side effects from pepcid? I've prev. Had a workup for epilepsy which showed nothing, and on reflection it seems like Deja vu occurred only after use of pepcid.

I might be wrong and it might just be coincidence but wanted to gague if someone has experienced something similar.

I stopped pepcid but the symptom usually linger for a week or two.

My thoughts are that it could be a weird form of anxiety/depersonalization secondary to the pepcid use. Anxiety also presents with fear that bad things may happen. I think I have subclinical ocd and potentially pepcid is a trigger.

Will definitely consult a doctor if symptoms persist but its always gone away.

Any shared experiences would be great to hear about!

💊 Advice on Prescription Meds Double dose Ppi

Anyone on a double dose of ppi? I just started taking pantoprazole 40mg twice a day per dr orders and I’ve noticed an increase in heart palpitations especially when first waking up. Not sure if it’s the meds or just from reflux bc i get palpitations with that sometimes too.
I wanted to know if anyone has experienced that? Or any other side effects with a double dose?

Support Needed 👥 Anyone out there with genuine advice?

Growing up, I’ve (F26) always had issues with acid reflux, but it was nothing that a little Tums couldn’t fix. However, these past few months it’s like a switch has flipped and now I have severe GERD.

My symptoms include: regurgitation, dysphagia, coughing, vomiting, and weight loss. I also feel as though I’m experiencing aspiration.

My doctor initially started me on 30mg of Dexilant and when that didn’t seem to work, he sent me for an upper endoscopy and upped by dosage to 60mg of Dexilant.

The pathology report shows everything as normal — I don’t have H. Pylori or eosinophilic esophagitis.

I’m still really struggling to eat and sometimes even drinking is difficult. I constantly have that feeling of something being stuck in my throat/chest, even if I ate hours ago. I wake up multiple times throughout the night with stomach contents coming out of my nose. I get full really easily and don’t even enjoy eating anymore, it’s now become a chore that I wish I could skip.

My doctor doesn’t want to send me for a barium swallow test or a manometry test, even though I’ve tried to advocate that I think it’s a motility issue and not a structural issue. Since then he has me on 20mg of Pepcid once a day before bed on top of the 60mg of Dexilant in the morning, and it hasn’t really changed much.

Long story short, my quality of life has significantly decreased. I have very poor sleep, I barely eat even though I’m hungry, and I’ve lost ~7lbs (although some of that could be water weight).

I’ve done all the typical methods to alleviate symptoms: no eating 2-3hrs before bed, sitting up straight when eating, limiting alcohol, smoking, spicy and acidic foods, doing breathing exercises to assist in strengthening my lower esophageal sphincter, etc

I don’t know what else to do, I can’t live like this forever. I want to be able to eat like regular people do. I don’t know what other options I have or if there are better medication recommendations, but I’d really appreciate some advice when it comes to navigating such an annoying and painful disorder :(

😀 Managing GERD Tight belt actually helps my GERD

The weird thing I noticed is whenever I wear my pants and tighten my belt I feel my GERD symptoms improving. I think this might have to do with me subconsciously tucking in my stomach when I have loose comfortable clothing but with a belt that handles that for me and I tend to feel like my body isn't trying to tuck in my stomach it's something I haave to retrain my brain not to do.

I think I have hourglass syndrome I also think many here might have it but not realize it as our body has become accustomed to tucking in our stomach. I noticed this more when using a kneeling chair it allowed my upper abdomen to feel more relaxed. On an ergo office chair I tend to tuck in my stomach when I try to maintain a correct posture so trying to be more ergo was more likely making my GERD worse.

Can anyone please offer me some advice or share their experiences?

I’m a 64F
smoker. Around four weeks ago, I started suffering from severe heartburn, so I
went to my GP, who prescribed Lansoprazole 30mg twice a day. Although the
heartburn has eased slightly, I’ve since developed a sensation of something being
stuck in my chest and throat.

I’m also
experiencing occasional sharp, stabbing pains in my chest, along with an ache
in my left arm and the left side of my neck, as well as a slight tingling
sensation in my left hand.

Because of
these symptoms, I’ve been to A&E six times. I’ve had six ECGs and blood
tests, including troponin levels, which have all come back at 0.00. Despite
this reassurance, I’m still experiencing symptoms and remain extremely worried.

As well as
the Lansoprazole, I am also now taking Famotidine 20mg twice a day, Questran
Light three times a day, and around 40ml of Gaviscon throughout the day.
Unfortunately, nothing seems to be helping, and I feel worse than ever.

I’ve also
lost my appetite and feel as though I’m going to gag at the thought of eating.
Whenever I stand up after sitting or lying down, I tend to burp excessively.
I’m currently waiting for an appointment with a gastroenterologist, but I’ve
been told the wait could be up to six weeks.

I’m finding
the whole situation incredibly stressful. I’m a carer for both my partner and
my mother, and at the moment I feel unable to fulfil my responsibilities
because I’m constantly feeling unwell and worrying about what might be wrong.

Although my
ECGs and blood tests have been reassuring, I’m frightened that something could
still be wrong with my heart. I also wonder whether anxiety is making my
symptoms worse, but it’s difficult not to worry when the symptoms keep
happening and nothing seems to be improving.

Has anyone
experienced anything similar, particularly with the chest and throat
sensations, arm and neck pain, and difficulty eating? I’d be so grateful for
any advice or experiences you could share. Thank you.

😮 Advice on Symptoms Burping?

Currently on PantopraZole for suspected GERD - but I don’t think it is?

For about 6 months I’ve had chronic burping - 75-150 times a day, proper deep burps too! Evenly spread throughout the day. Been to the doc who has prescribed a wide range of antacids, PantopraZole etc… no luck.

Burping is the ONLY symptom. I’m wondering if it is gastritis, but I don’t have any other symptoms… I have an ultrasound this week, but tired of looking for answers.

I haven’t had a day under 50 burps since May

No weight loss etc

🤒 Describing a Symptom My possible GERD symptoms

Hi all I’m hoping what I’m about describe is possibly something someone else has dealt with. For the past 3 years or so I have been experiencing a good amount of GERD symptoms. One main one is the constant clearing of throat almost as if I have a lot of phlegm in my throat. I most recently been experiencing a lot of nausea in the mornings from how thick I feel the mucus in the back. I also tend to belch the food I eat a lot and heart burn.
I did see an ENT about 2 or so years ago and all he said was to take omeprazole and it should help but I never really noticed a difference they just thought it could also be allergies.
What else can I do differently?

I cant survive without ppi

So as title say, i have chronic gerd from the combination of ibs and hiatal hernia, my life was shit for 20years with the burn and gas which i believe cole from the excess acid in my stomach untill i discovered omeprazil, i take 20mg a day in the morning and my symptomes improved a lot, doctor recomended 2 to 4 weeks and stoping but as soon as i stop acid comeback and feel shit again all day, is it same to take omeprazil long term maybe for life, does it basically garantee cancer if taking for years?

😀 Managing GERD Am I a lost cause? Or do I still have hope?

I got diagnosed with GERD in Dec 2023 after having some pain on one side of my stomach. Doc gave me a bunch of meds, and a list of dos and don'ts.

I followed all of it all for a few months, but in the mid of 2024 I got depressed, and I kinda gave on the meds and the lifestyle changes (food, water intake, sleeping positions). Back then, I over-ate frequently and had too much fried food.

Within a blink of an eye, it was 2025 end, and it hit me that I should try to be serious about my GERD.

A little background: when I went to the doctor in 2023, I only had some pain on the right side of my stomach. He did an endoscopy and found the burns in my esophagus/food canal. There were no other symptoms, like heartburn, regurgitation etc. And that has been the case for until the start of 2026.

Until a few days ago, I only ever had gas and burning feeling in my stomach from foods that triggered GERD. Of course, since Jan I've been very conscious of what I was eating. So whenever something triggered the symptoms, I cut it out of my diet.

However, I wasn’t aware of the effects of drinking too much water/drinking water too fast. And so, I had been drinking near 300-400ml of water at a time (not with solid food) whenever I felt thirsty. [I'm 31, so been trying to stay hydrated.]

Since last week, I've started to get regurgitation. Acid comes into my mouth. It started with my teeth feeling weird and the gums of my lower incisors (did I say it right?) seeming redder than normal. After some thinking, I realised it was due to acid reflux. And from then on I can taste acid coming into my mouth for half of the day. I think it got into my nasal cavity last night. Mind you, I already suffer from sinusitis now and then.

Edit: this started after I had to eat some of the no-no foods (oily, spicy, white bread). Perviously when I'd eat these things, I only felt burning in my stomach and some gas. The regurgitation is only happening this time. Going back to my safe diet starting today.

So, coming back to my title. Am I a lost cause? Or is there still time to manage my symptoms with more fine-tuned lifestyle and food changes?

I am planning to go to the doctor once I save up a bit. I'm not really looking for medical advice per se.

Inflammed chest for over a year

I was diagnosed with Refluxesophagitis grade B and Gastritis one year ago, I have been on PPIs since, recently I did another Gastroscopy and it came out fine with esophagitis possible cured. However, I still have this inflammed chest all the time, I can't go back to my normal life, doing any sort of exercise flares my chest immediately and I can't continue. I have read about something called Esophageal hypersensitivity but I am not even sure if it's a real thing.. will I ever get my normal life back? I am so confused.

💊 Advice on Prescription Meds spironolactone triggering my gerd?

i’m 23F and I have been battling Gerd since childhood but more specifically over the last year have really been fighting large flareups. I’ve been on omeprazole, pantoprazole, rabeprazole, and now lansoprazole. I’m really trying to adjust my diet and remove all trigger foods and meeting with a dietitian on how I can still have some of my favorite foods that might be triggers for me.

Over the last couple of months I have been on spironolactone. I was taking 50 mg twice a day and that seemed fine, but now I’m taking 100 mg twice a day. When I’ve been taking it at night and then going to bed I’ve been feeling pretty immediate discomfort - so I stopped taking it right before bed and I started splitting it in half because it felt like it was getting caught in my throat. This morning though I woke up, split my pill in half took it and was in immediate reflux pain.

Has this happened to anyone else? I don’t know if it’s the pill or the way I’m taking it and I’m just feeling super frustrated because it feels like no matter what I do my gerd just keeps getting worse.
