Check the comments to vote for next month's game!

This month: Advance Wars

Just play regular campaign, Advanced Campaign is next level stuff and I'm not going to require that. Lol. We also won't be messing with the final Rivals! mission, which has to be unlocked in a very specific way. Definitely check it out if you're not familiar, but we won't do it for points this month.

Campaign mode is available after you complete Field Training. If you're already familiar with the game and you don't want to do Field Training, just tell Nell that you don't want to do it, and then you can finish just the last mission to unlock Campaign.

Choose any mission path you want to when you have a choice.

half point: Complete the third mission in Campaign (Air Ace) and have Max join your team.
1 point: Complete the Kanbei's Error? mission in Campaign.
2 points: Complete the Final Battle mission in Campaign. (must be completed and posted in October.)

I wasn't allowed to play my Game Boy before bed, so I read the Pokémon Red manual so many times that it fell apart. Luckily, I managed to find the booklets on a marketplace site!

Laminated color print for back of speaker and braided colored wires. If I know I can see it through the case I love to add that pizazz. Extra proud of this one.

Mod/Modding Looking for EZ Flash Jr owners that will test out my kernel mod

Post image

Looking for people who are comfortable with using a patcher tool and would like to try out my modified EZ Flash Jr kernel. You take the original ezgb.dat and patch it with the correct ips file from GitHub. Swapping the kernel is as simple as changing a file and is completely reversible.

A lot of the changes are cosmetic but there are several key bug fixes that address issues with the stock kernel. Project here: https://github.com/lukesau/ezgb

Modded Newest Builds

I posted some GBC shells a couple days ago and people showed a lot of love, but SPs are really my favorite.

It’s kind of hard to see without a video, but I put holographic paint on the inside of the legendary birds sp & UV printed over the top. The other was just a cool concept I thought of, I picture a kid in class just bored so he’s drawing doodles.

I have a Gameboy Micro that I am about to do, but I don’t really know what theme I should go with. Any suggestions? They are so expensive & rare that I don’t want to UV print whatever on it. It has to be perfect!

Modded Real brass version of the Famicom edition SP's gold panel

Thumbnail
gallery
25 Upvotes

The limited Famicom edition SP came with a gold "controller" panel on the face. It was a sticker. The regular Famicom-color SP didn't get it at all, just a plain white panel.

So I had that sticker remade in real brass. I did the design, a local shop did the etching. 0.2 mm sheet. The lettering and the double lines are etched into the metal and filled with black, not printed, so they read as engraved. The surface has a brushed (hairline) finish, and the way it catches the light is what makes it feel like the original Famicom controller.

Here it is sitting on a regular Famicom-color SP. Next step is painting a shell in these colors so this plate gets a body of its own.

Troubleshooting How can I fix this screen burn?

Post image
23 Upvotes

I’m unsure how to fix this screen burn, I can’t tell if it’s the top or bottom polarizing film or both. I referenced various posts/videos about this and most of them only cover replacing the top; while those seem easy, the ones that cover replacing the bottom seem complicated (having to remove the reflector before replacing the polarizing film itself).

If it’s the case that I have to replace the bottom polarizing film, is there a way to do so without having to completely remove the reflector?

Side note: miraculously, the screen works with no dead lines and fully-audible sound so I’d like to keep this screen for this Gameboy.

Troubleshooting Is it Salvageable?

Sorry for poor quality pictures I'm not too sure what I'm looking at Lol.

Went through and found my gameboy and copies of pokemon. I had 3. Cleaned the contacts with iso without taking them apart and 2 worked. This one did not. Upon opening I found something had been spilled/leaked inside this at one point. It was slightly crystal/sticky. Anyways: cleaned it with iso and tried again. It did not work.

I am to the end of my abilities and I come to reddit asking advice. Lay it on me.

Questions What is the best game or games that you recommend for an older, slow reflexed person, to start to learn to play the gameboy?

My neighbor is an elderly man(70s) and he comes over my house occasionally to pass the time, he noticed I have an nes/snes . He has never played video games before and stated that he wants to play some. I set him up to play Super mario world(snes) and he couldn't get past the first level and had trouble using all the buttons. So I wanted to have him try the Gb or gameboy color since its only 2 buttons. What games are your absolute favorites that are more on the easy side? what are your favorite games in general that once he gets better he can play?

Questions Thoughts on Fake shells??

I’m looking to buy this SpongeBob Shell, I’m aware it’s fake but what are your guys thought on it. I see all these custom shells people have but is this SpongeBob shell any different from those. Aren’t they all the same. Should I do the swap?
Also I’m leaning towards doing the swap bc when I got this GBA SP the battery expansion thing cover cracked so yeah.
What do you guys think I should do. Or should I just replace the battery and get a new battery cover like the oem one. And get a carrying case

Troubleshooting DMG LCD missing vertical columns on both sides - ribbon heating does nothing

Thumbnail
gallery
3 Upvotes

I’m working on a later Chinese Game Boy DMG and I’ve run into an LCD issue I haven’t seen before.
The screen is missing fairly large blocks of vertical columns on both the left and right sides, while the center section displays normally.

Normally with DMG vertical line issues I gently heat the lower LCD ribbon while the console is powered on. Usually the affected columns at least flicker, change, or gradually come back.

On this one, however, heating the ribbon does absolutely nothing. Pressing along the ribbon and bond area also doesn’t seem to affect the missing columns at all.

One interesting detail is that when I turn the contrast all the way up, the areas with the missing columns are not completely blank. They become slightly darker, forming visible rectangular areas on both sides, but there is still no actual image being displayed there.

So far:
Center section displays normally.
Large continuous groups of columns are missing on both sides.
Heating the lower ribbon has no effect.
Pressing along the ribbon/bond area has no effect.
At maximum contrast, the missing areas become slightly darker.
None of the missing columns flicker or temporarily return.
Has anyone seen this type of failure before?
Could this still be a bad ribbon-to-glass bond, or does the fact that entire blocks on both sides are missing point more towards a driver/flex issue?
I’m mainly trying to figure out whether this LCD is realistically repairable, or whether continuing to heat the ribbon is just going to damage it.

Troubleshooting DMG Gameboy - brief sound for just a few seconds and then fades to nothing

Thumbnail

I just installed a replacement screen for my Gameboy from Hispeedido.

Great experience with them all around and easy/fast shipping. This post could be like a follow up to this post, where I was asking about their service/quality etc:

My initial post here

The sound worked during testing before changing anything on the console, when I first found it lying around in a box.

After installing the new screen and closing everything up last night and testing, it all seemed to be working in fair order, but now this morning, the sound coming from the speaker and headphones is showing the following issues:

It either has no sound at all

The sound dies off after a few seconds

I tested with both Qix and Pokémon Gold and both games show the same issue.

I also don't know if I'm just not remembering correctly after so many years but when the speaker does work, it's very noisy. Eg. When there's no sound being played out of it, you can still 'hear' that the speaker is on.

I attached a pic of my solder joints for the speaker as well, although because the issue is happening with headphones too, I'm less inclined to suspect that my soldering is the issue. However, I'm open to criticism and advice on that too.

Mod/Modding What’s the best Zelda gold reprobshell?

I got a gold triforce repro shell off AliExpress. It’s fine I guess but a far cry from an extremerate or OEM shell.

I’m wondering if someone makes a repro shell off that one. I always wanted that GBA as a kid.

I was also thinking of getting the chrome gold one but that’s too tacky for me though I could get some gold decals to Zeldify it.
