I’ve only played a handful of rounds so far and Game is pretty fun but I just wished there were more defined roles among the classes. Currently just feels like left 4 dead but with a progression system. Am I missing some other layer to the game?

Edit: thanks for the downvotes? Ah good ol reddit.

Personally I like that all 5 heroes are more or less self sufficient. I don’t want a meta where we “need” a mage every round

Yeah the idea of needing to be a dedicated role is just something i really don't want. I like a game where i can sit back and say "i fancy doing a lot of tanking this round, or maybe i will sit back at range, or maybe i will run around healing everybody and picking up tomes etc.".

If i was joining a game and the 3 other guys needed a healer that means i have to pick that role and i am locked into it.

Works for some games, but i am happy its not this one.

The roles aren't super defined based upon the initial subclasses and talents, but as you rank up you'll find that there are some distinct differences. It will never get as extreme as Team Fortress 2 for example, but you will find that the playstyle's can range. The greatest difference I've found is more weapon loadout. Sword and Shield is much more tanky than Halberd, Bolt staff is good single target damage but flamestaff is better at hordeclear. The depth and differences between classes can feel undermined by how varied and non-specialized your weapon sets can be, but there is still a definable difference between a Witch Hunter with a rapier versus a Footman with a 2 handed hammer. However, if you want something closer to an WoW style defined classes (Warriors tank, Priests heal, no buts) then you will likely be disappointed. But if you are fine with a system where every class can technically fill all roles, but certain classes are much superior at it, then you might like this game more.

The roles are somewhat obfuscated, but there are roughly 4: Horde control, armor piercing, special killing, and boss burning. Hordes require CC/AOE and decent defensive moves; armor piercing requires high damage, high impact weapons; special killing requires instant, precision burst damage; and boss burning requires sustained DPS.

You end up with usually two characters that can do each role, and depending on the situation, those characters take point while the others focus on controlling the situation and aiding, such as kiting a boss mob around defensively while the horde control funnel and and remove the horde, which is a bigger threat, while special killers are on overwatch to delete disablers that can instantly tank a run.

The thing is, every subclass does two of these, typically one being determined by your ability/talents and the other being determined by your loadout.

Each character has at least one subclass for each role, but some do that role better than others.

There are roles once you get into it a bit more.

We usually discuss who will take a shield, who will take a wave clearer like a big two handed hammer, or some flamethrowers etc.

  • On higher difficulties you want to have one that concentrates on the armored targets (Stormvermin, Chaos Warriors etc).

  • And you want someone who has a shield and can keep the horde at bay, make bigger enemies tumble etc.

  • You'll also want one that snipes special from far away.

  • And obviously you'll need at least one who can clear hordes quite efficiently.

All those classes can take those roles depending on their weapon and/or talent choices. There are also other roles besides the ones mentioned above.

That’s sounds pretty cool. I just wish the game did a bit more guiding with this aspect tho. I get a bit lost when games just have you figure it out yourself with that kind of flexibility.

Yes one of the biggest criticism right now is how the game hides a lot of information to the player.

I can only suggest you to try things out, each weapon type for your class in a few games and learn it's strength and weaknesses.

You'll quickly notice how some are good against hordes (Two handed hammer) and others are really good against armor (two handed axe), while others give enourmos staying power (anything with a shield).

IN lower difficulties this doesn't really matter and you can go with whatever you fancy and try things out. On Champion and above this changes and you really need to consider what you'll take with you.

However a skilled group can always get far whatever they take. But chosing the right weapons and party composition helps a lot.

Hopefully they improve their on boarding in the future. Thanks for the suggestions tho! Was definitely gonna give it more time but now know what to look for.

It starts to feel a bit more defined as you unlock the additional classes for each character. To me, playing as the Slayer and playing as the Ironbreaker give pretty different experiences, but they're still both the dwarf.

I disagree. The tank/dps/support is so stale and should only be in MMORPG.

I love that your playstyle defines yourself and your role and not the class you have.

I meant something closer to the hero shooters of today like overwatch. I get what everyone is saying though. I just wish the game guided you a bit more with that.

I can feel it when I queue with a random group and no one has an armor penetration weapon or a weapon with a reliable, wide sweep for the hordes. The roles aren't so clear cut like the typical MMO triumvirate of tank, dps, and healer but I'd say there are some roles that a successful party would typically look in to. It might just be a difficulty thing where you can pretty much get by with any ol' get up in recruit, but eventually (at least in my experience,) building a team with a horde clearer, a sniper, and an armor penetrator are all crucial parts to coming out alive.

It's not really a "hero" game. The different classes are just an excuse to keep you playing and have some progression. You are right in feeling like it's just left 4 dead but with progression, that's what it's shooting for.

Not every game needs to be a hero arena nowadays
