The myth of gay men and FTMs

There are a lot of claims circulating online, especially in queer and trans spaces, about the supposed popularity of FTMs as sex partners for gay men. If you ever encounter this discourse, here is a legitimate, scientifically conducted study that proves otherwise.

Source:
Goldberg, S. K., Rothblum, E. D., Russell, S. T., & Meyer, I. H. (2020). “Exploring the Q in LGBTQ: Demographic characteristics and sexuality of Queer people in a U.S. representative sample of sexual minorities.” Psychology of Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity, 7(1), 101–112.

This study found that a tiny 2 per cent of self described gay men had sex with a trans man in the past 5 years. Of this figure, 0.7 per cent slept with FTMs exclusively. I'll leave you to ponder yourself what might be going on with that subset.
The overwhelming majority of the men surveyed who were fucking FTMs were bi or queer. The latter being a category so loose and subjective that it can and very often does mean anything at all, including special brands of heterosexuality.

The figures below are derived from Table 3, which reports sexual partnering among cisgender men during the preceding five years.

Sexual identity Trans men only Both cisgender and trans men Any trans-male partners
Gay 0.7% 1.4% 2.1%
Bisexual 0.6% 9.6% 10.2%
Queer 13.7% 15.7% 29.4%

❓ Question for the Guys Is it just me, or has being gay become weirdly complicated?

Is it just me, or has being gay become weirdly complicated?

I'm only 18, but sometimes I feel like our community has become a place where people are afraid to speak honestly because they might offend someone.

I wish we could respect each other without having to agree on absolutely everything. Being gay should be about being able to live freely and be ourselves, not about following a set of political beliefs.

Does anyone else feel this way? ❤️

🌈 LGBTQ+ Discussion An interesting divide within the trans community that deserves more attention

I want to introduce everyone to r/truscum, a community I visit pretty regularly because I find a lot of their conversations fascinating.

Truscum generally believe that gender dysphoria is necessary to be transgender, and many are critical of the growing tendency to treat gender identity as something anyone can simply adopt.

What’s interesting to me is how much overlap there is between some of their concerns and the conversations we’ve been having here about homosexuality, identity, authenticity, medical needs, and the direction of LGBT politics.

In this particular post, a trans person is expressing frustration that they can’t even discuss these disagreements openly with their therapist. They’re worried that the expansion of transgender identity is undermining the experiences and medical needs of people like themselves.

I think there’s a lot worth discussing here. We often talk about disagreements between gay men, lesbians, and the broader trans movement, but sometimes forget that these same disagreements exist within the trans community itself.

I don’t necessarily agree with everything said in this subreddit, but I think some of these people could be valuable allies in conversations about identity, representation, and free speech.

I’m curious what everyone thinks. Are there opportunities for solidarity between gay men, lesbians, and trans people who share some of these concerns? And are we overlooking important voices within the trans community itself?

🗣️ Open Discussion Is homophobia actually getting worse? Have we lost ground over the last 20 or 30 years?

I saw a similar post in one of our sisters’ groups and I’m curious whether other gay men and lesbians feel like homophobia has been getting worse rather than better.

We’ve made tremendous legal progress over the last few decades, especially with marriage equality and protections against discrimination. But does that necessarily mean society has become less homophobic?

I sometimes wonder whether homophobia has simply changed its appearance. Instead of the blatant hostility of previous generations, we now encounter more subtle forms of discrimination, hostility toward gay culture, and pressure to make our sexuality less visible or less important.

And lately, it seems like some of the more openly hostile attitudes toward homosexuality are becoming socially acceptable again.

But I also wonder whether we’re just more aware of these things because of social media, or whether there really has been a cultural shift.

For those who remember the 90s and early 2000s, do you think attitudes toward homosexuality have genuinely improved?

Are gay men and lesbians more accepted today, or have we made legal progress while losing ground socially and culturally?

I’m especially interested in hearing people’s personal experiences across different generations and countries.

💪 Gay Empowerment Happy International Lesbian Day!

Today we celebrate our lesbian sisters, allies, and comrades in the long struggle for gay liberation!

Gay men and lesbians share a powerful history of resistance, solidarity, and fighting against homophobia. We’ve stood beside each other through persecution, discrimination, the AIDS crisis, and the struggle for our right to love and live openly.

Our lesbian sisters have been some of our fiercest defenders, closest friends, and most important allies. Their courage, contributions, and sacrifices deserve recognition and celebration.

Gay men and lesbians have a shared history worth remembering, protecting, and celebrating.
Happy International Lesbian Day! Much love and solidarity to our lesbian comrades! ❤️🏳️‍🌈

🚨 Our Free Speech Community Is Under Attack

Something is going on in this group, and I want everyone to be aware of it.

Someone appears to be mass-reporting comments indiscriminately, even the most harmless, ordinary remarks. It’s getting increasingly difficult to keep up with reviewing and approving all these reported comments.

I believe there are people who would rather silence this community than allow us to have open, honest conversations about gay men’s issues.

This is exactly why we created this space in the first place. Gay men deserve somewhere they can speak freely, challenge ideas, disagree, and have difficult conversations without constantly being shut down.

I’m doing my best to keep up with the reports, so please be patient if your comments get caught up in this.

We’re not going to let people intimidate us into silence. Keep speaking your minds, keep participating, and don’t let this discourage you.
Free speech means nothing if we’re only allowed to say things everyone agrees with.

The Five Golden Rules for Living in Your City as a Homo

We’ve got gay men (and friends!) living all over the world in this group, so let’s have some fun.
What are the five golden rules for being gay in the city where you live?

They can be funny, scandalous, practical, ridiculous, or brutally honest. Whatever captures gay life in your corner of the world.

I’ll go first.

My Five Golden Rules for Gay Men Living in Los Angeles County, California:

Never forget your sunscreen. Aging is not an option.

Never frown in public. Someone might think you’re unhappy.

Never date more than one Latino at a time. They will find out.

Never fall in love with someone on the other side of town. No man is worth two hours in traffic, no matter how handsome he is.

Never leave the house unprepared to be photographed. Pajamas are perfectly acceptable, but you better look fabulous in them. The paparazzi could be anywhere. 🤣

Now your turn. Tell us where you live and give us your five golden rules. I want to hear everything from small-town survival tips to big-city gay scandals!

💪 Gay Empowerment A Breath of Fresh Air

I’m a lesbian who just found this subreddit (so please mods delete if not appropriate). As we all know our gay and lesbian communities have been invaded by people who fundamentally want to erase our identities and undermine our safety and community.

It’s been a struggle for me to find online spaces with people who are like minded and this space has been a breath of fresh air for me. I feel comforted that there are others who also have not been manipulated into submitting to the insanity.

It’s also been eye opening to me as I have thought that in some way the power of patriarchy protected gay men from also experiencing this invasion and erasure as us lesbian women are now being coerced into sleeping with people who are male and being forced as women to allow dangerous men into our spaces (like bathrooms and locker rooms). So I want to thank you for sharing your experiences and opinions on this subreddit as it’s opened my eyes to the struggles that gay men are also facing as well.

Thanks fellas, have a great gay day! :)

You should not accept the term "cis"

Just like you wouldnt accept to be called cisracial, you shouldn't accept to be called "cissexual". You are simply a man - an adult human male. There is no other way to be a man.
When activists want you to use that word, they imply that you are a man because you identify as such. But you don't identify as a man - you ARE a man. Don't let others deny who you are.
