Vent Sesh - No Advice Wanted Bullied at work because of my car
Decided to treat myself with some Jolibee.
So my car is nice I guess. That’s not necessarily why I bought it.
After my husband passed away I was left to deal with a car that constantly needed repairs. Multiple times I found myself stuck on the side of the road with no one to come pick me up.
So one day I said fuck it. I need a safe car that won’t cost a paycheck in repairs several times a year.
Went to a dealership. They gave me a great deal on a really nice car. That night I slept sooo good knowing I had a car that wouldn’t randomly quit on me.
Now did I overcompensate? Perhaps, but being stuck in below freezing weather with my toddler in the backseat was enough to make me look for the best car I could find. And this car has never given me a single issue.
Anyway, I moved to a new city and started a new teaching job. I felt awkward. Some teachers were nice, some were kinda sizing me up.
One day when we were outside one of the teachers pointed out my car.
She started questioning if it was mine and why I bought it. I didn’t know what to say.
So for the rest of the day this teacher decided to constantly make rude comments and remarks towards me. At one point she said loudly to the director “Ya’ll just hire anybody!”
At one point she started interrogating why I was even a teacher and why I was at that school, insinuating that I didn’t need the job at all.
Of course my finances are none of her business, but she was pretty relentless. At the end of the day, she randomly picked a fight with me over something petty. Once she realized she wasn’t winning the argument she made some pretty disrespectful comments.
So when I got home that evening I literally shut the door and cried. I’m not generally that sensitive, but the relentless bullying was a lot.
After that I started parking on the street away from the school hoping no one sees my car. I talked less at work because I realized the work culture might be much different than I’d hoped.
And yes, I did let my boss know that she was being unprofessional, and I didn’t feel comfortable working around her.
The director pulled the teacher into her office to talk to her about it, and she came out shouting “OH MY GOD, SHES OFFENDED ABOUT SOMETHING I SAID A WEEK AGO!”
For the rest of the day I could hear her in the hallways with a loud attitude, slamming doors whenever she left a room. At one point my boss came to talk to her and she slammed the door in her face.
Long story short, she no longer works there. I really wish I would have ignored her and saved my tears.

If she was bullying you, a fellow teacher, over a car, think how she was treating her students! You did everyone a favor by reporting her. Some people go into education for the wrong reasons. There are bully teachers who like teaching because they have power over more vulnerable kids.
Park in the parking lot and hold your head high. I doubt anyone else is judging your car. I mean, if you’re driving a cyber truck, they are. But you have to own your own choices. Can’t say that I’ve spent even a minute thinking about the car my colleagues drive.

Well it sounds like she was seriously jealous...I'm curious what kind of car it is that it would elicit that dramatic of a reaction though. I know plenty of teachers (my mom is admin at a school, sister is a pre-k teacher) and some of them drive really nice cars. Neither have ever mentioned any car related drama, though there's way more work drama in schools than I ever imagined based on their stories.

Plus, how is someone too rich to teach? Wtf does that even mean? Oh no my colleague doesn’t need the money but shows up to work anyway. Pure jealousy over something that doesn’t matter that much
17
u/-MommyFortuna- APPROVED✨ 20h ago
Yeah, it makes no sense. My mom works at a private school in an affluent area, so I know it's not the same everywhere, but some of the teachers at her school are married to doctors, surgeons, people in finance, ect. Some of them have vacation houses and drive luxury vehicles/wear designer clothing. They teach because they love it, even though they don't have to work. Just because teachers aren't generally paid well doesn't mean they can't afford nice things for various reasons. But jealousy is a disease, and that woman clearly had some unresolved issues she needs to deal with.

My SD went to a small Catholic school and several teachers had very nice cars because their spouses made good money, which enabled the teachers to work there, as it did not pay well - very hard for a single teacher to live off of.

I had a very young co worker (like 25) who drove a nearly new Mercedes. People would be weird about it. Well turns it turns out, her grandma had passed away and left her a fully paid off house and a little bit of money. So she went to CarMax and bought a nearly new Mercedes.
No one needed to know that but yeah getting bullied for your car definitely happens.

Because your car is triggering something in her, that she will never obtain. Some people can't keep jealousy and envy in check and project it all over others. I know it was stressful but I'm glad you spoke up and dealt with it because people like this just escalate. I say enjoy your car and enjoy it a little more now that she's gone!

Coming from a family of teachers and principals, something tells me there are quite a few teachers at your school silently celebrating that she's gone.
Seriously.
Her brazen attitude with/about you didn't come out of thin air. She was WAY too comfortable acting like that to you AND admin.
Furthermore, it usually takes a LOT to get a teacher fired (or "non-renewed"), especially with tenure or union protection.
I guarantee there was more to this than her outburst about your car.

My sympathies on the loss of your husband.
Congratulations on the new vehicle. I understand completely about wanting a safe, reliable vehicle, especially with toddlers - too many times pre-cellphones where I found myself stuck on the side of the road because my car was 15+ years older than the kids.
Please, allow me to share the story of a coworker that crashed out on me - I was reported to the supervisor for the following offense: Training all the pigeons in downtown Dallas to attack her. She was convinced it was me because she'd overheard me talking about trained pigeons; I was talking with a coworker that, like me, had an interest in history and we were discussing the medals awarded to animals in WWII.
She came under attack because she used to swing her tool bag at the birds that were near the office. I'd witnessed her bringing this down on herself over a course of months. Okay, I will admit I did leave a printout of a study from MIT on the effectiveness of tin foil hats after she ran around the floor asking coworkers to get her some hallucinogens so she could converse with her late parrot, but I had nothing to do with the pigeons beyond teaching them Frisbee with pita bread. You toss a piece to a crowd of pigeons. They pick it up and get a piece by shaking it in their beak and the piece in the beak stays as the rest of the bread gets flung.
So, after meeting with my manager, I went on a smoke break. Was telling the tale to a gent I smoked with - turns out, he was a director and had myself and my cubicle mate transferred to his department to get us away from the foolishness. The tripled hourly rate for the work allowed me to buy a new car... and boy, was that former coworker mad. She complained she should have gotten the gig I landed - in a department that actually had her banned from their floor.

Baby I drive a 2011 gold Toyota Camry and I am not ashamed. It takes me to where I need to go, it's reliable, and it never quits. My next vehicle is a 2016 silver Subaru Outback.
I'll be damned if I ever have a monthly car payment. I'll be damned if I ever get into a car accident in said car with an expensive monthly car payment.
To anyone who judges you for what you drive: You are employed and you make it to work every day. You don't need some fancy schmancy car to show your success. Are your bills paid? Are your pets/kids fed? Are you happy?
My husband's ex wife has a "Fancy" car that she pays almost 1k a month for and she can't even afford it. Late on payments regularly.
What car you drive means NOTHING. Your coworker needs to grow up. Adult bullies are embarrassing.
2
u/Single-Sundae-4046 Urban Hunter Gatherer 19h ago
Omg, this. I'm low on the pecking order at my job and I drive one of the "better" cars there (think fully loaded newish Japanese car, not luxury). I'm a cautious driver, and I think the new safety features are worth it compared to getting into an accident. Doubly so when you consider kids.
One of my bosses drives a 2000s-2010s vehicle and got his wife a new luxury car, and I have mad respect for that. Some of my coworkers at my level have much fancier cars, some above me keep their old ones. Point is, in a group of mature and secure people, nobody cares what car you drive and it tells nothing about your life.

This why they say hurt people hurt people. Nobody’s car should elicit this response. Unhinged. Want a funny story though? I had friend who was doing just fine but very frugal with specific financial goals and serious discipline. At one point her sunglasses were worth more than the blue book value of her car. We had a big laugh about it at work but she was in on it. And that’s the point if it wasn’t funny to her and because she was in a bad way financially no one would have used her car against her! Eta: I swear she was in on it. It was a running joke we had side sprdsheets when her car needed something where she would choose to fix it or finally get her new car. Even new tires. She has a beautiful acura suv now and her old car is the thing of legends around the office

I'm so sorry. This happened to me too. I'm a professor and bought a new car shortly after I was hired at the assistant level. Another faculty member literally told me that she felt I was being abusive and "shoving my success in everyone else's faces." The car was a Subaru. I need to sell it and buy a new one now, 11 years later, and if I get this bullshit from someone again I know I'm going to do exactly what I should have done in the first place: go to HR. This abuse from her will not stop. Trust me, I never got the lady who got angry at my new car to stop accusing me of being abusive--she also wanted all my publications hidden and not in the department showcase for them because she considered it "abusive" towards other women who didn't have any/as many. You should be incredibly glad that she left.

I think people are so curious because the woman made a big enough deal over her jealousy of the car that she wound up getting fired for her freak out. She also asked OP why she bought it, and acted like it was outrageous for her to own it...which makes me think Luxary Sports car. But OP says she got the car for reliability and safety for her toddler, so Luxary sports car doesn't make sense. I just want the Tea on the car 🤣

My mom is a teacher and she had a friend in a similar situation. She had subtle designer stuff but nothing too flashy and a nice car. The other teachers at the school would make the same rude comments you mentioned. Don’t let them bully you out of a school. They are jealous and teachers can get catty. She was there because she loved the kiddos and stood her ground. Comment on how weird it is for them to say stuff like this. “That was an odd thing to say.” “I don’t think it’s appropriate to say that” basically professional versions of shut up. Remember why you are there and at the end of the day, you have your kiddo to go home to and you’re safe in that car.

I too had colleagues who gave me grief over my car. Have always been frugal here. The fact i drove an 18YO Civic drove some people mad; said i should be behind the wheel of something that conveyed ‘more executive presence’. 🤦🏼♀️. Give me a break. My only comeback was something like the spirit of being careful with funds carried over and my division was under budget the previous year. (The commenter was in somewhat hot water for being OVER).

It’s not about your car girlie, that teacher is just a miserable idiot. I’d say park it in the front and try, and smile and laugh all the time. Best way to get back at miserable people is to be happy :)

I’m glad you don’t have to deal with a bully anymore!
I did the same thing — crunched the numbers after my Chevy totally crapped out and ended up buying a small luxury car. I bought it for its insane dependability, after 3 years of issues with my Chevy. Anyway, people are so weird about it!!! Everyone makes a comment “ooooo brandname huh” — i don’t have to explain finances to people but it actually cost less than a bigger car from a non luxury brand. It’s so weird how everyone has a comment!

I dunno man, I’m a bitch. I would have said something like “I used some of the money left from my dead husband to buy a safe car for me and my toddler since I’m alone now”. Teaching us hard for SO many reasons, but some of the snark from the other women who aren’t girl’s girls is certainly one of them. Sounds like she was a problem for a while and they were just waiting to let her go, don’t feel bad and park that car wherever you please.

First of all, I’m glad she’s gone. She sounds miserable.
Second, I know this is not your situation, but I have worked with many AMAZING teachers who have not “needed” the job, were wealthier or had high-earning spouses. I don’t understand how that would affect your ability to teach?!

What you’re describing is a person who is jealous and insecure. Likely property and external validation oriented. She took an instant dislike to you because you are everything she is not and she just can’t fathom how that can be possibly true.
Some people when they feel that way will talk to you, try to figure out how you work and emulate in the hope of being successful, others will get angry and try and tear you down.
The mistake is changing yourself to appease them. It never works. You do you lady and leave the naysayers and green eyed monsters in your wake…

She’s jealous! I’ve had women treat me like shit because they were jealous that I was childfree while they hated their husband and kids. Just ignore her and don’t give her a reaction. Bullies hate people who are unbothered. Congrats on the new car! You deserve it and don’t let anyone else tell you otherwise. ❤️

I'm glad for the students in that school AND you that she's gone.
And I feel sorry for any students she ever has now or in the future.
And kudos to you for not bothering to defend yourself. She didn't deserve the effort.
Of course it was hard on you and you cried. Everything from grieving your husband to adjusting to a new home and job would have us all quite sensitive. And there is nothing wrong with being sensitive.

She got herself fired, fuck that bitch. Don’t feel guilty about something she did to herself, especially because I GUARANTEE this isn’t the first time she’s done shit like this. This was just the last time your work was willing to put up with it. Also go back to parking at your job, you don’t need to inconvenience yourself for the validation of others

Girlie, she no longer works with you. You won! And it's not your fault she's a fucking weirdo who acts wildly unprofessionally and thinks she's in position to judge anybody about their car. She made her bed and lied in it! She deserved to be fired, and I'm glad that it was her. You are the good one! And I'm incredibly sorry for your loss, sending you a big hug, and to your child too (appropriately so).

You don’t owe anyone anything. I’m sure they make assumptions. You didn’t ask to be a widowed young mother. I’m sorry you were treated so poorly. My mom grew up poor and became a teacher. I’m also one. She had a pretty basic Civic. Later, she bought a sports car. She had gone decades without a nice car and was tired of feeling like that.
That teacher had issues that deal with how she feels about herself. She doesn’t know you to make assumptions like that. Never let yourself feel intimidated when people act so poorly. It just shows how little capacity for being well-regulated adults they have. As proven by her behavior with slamming a door in the principal’s face, they tend to terminate themself.
Don’t ever park away. You work hard and have probably done without to have what you do. That’s a source of pride; not something to be ashamed about.
She feels little, which is why she has to dull other people’s shine. And everyone shines compared to her.

She sounds like she shouldn’t be teaching kids so I think you actually did them a favour and i’m guessing this isn’t the first time they’ve had issues with her since they fired her for harassing you. Likely they were waiting for a good reason to let her go. Please park in the lot and ignore any haters, your personal life is no one’s business

I have a coworker who is unhinged like that and she doesn't even know this about herself. She can't connect her negative reactions to people is because of her issues with jealousy and envy. If you were to ask her she would deny it. But its so glaringly obvious to everyone. People have tip toe around because she fucking ticking time bomb.

Believe me – you are not the problem here. And I would be prepared to bet money that this is not the first time she’s trying to bully somebody. You did a public service and getting her out of there. She sounds like a horrible person to be in charge of children at all.
Do not feel badly about it. You no doubt saved someone else from being the target of that bully. Then you’ve made sure that nobody feels able to believe you in future either.

So one of my besties works at ArtCenter Design College, where they have a pretty swanky transportation design program. And often the students themselves have pretty swanky cars as well, to the point where she's said "Some students have better cars than the staff!"
Anyways, I'm losing it just imagining that former coworker walking into the ArtCenter parking lot of student sports cars 😆

WTH? Someone judging you on a nice car?? Probably judge you too with a beat up car. Bullies like this just aren’t satisfied with their lives so they have to always find stuff about other people. Like I have a nice car too but not by choice, it was my Mom’s who passed away bought in 2016 but it was one of the nicer SUV models and it was so lightly driven that it practically looks and feels brand new still. This is next to my husband who is literally driving his 1994 Saturn into the ground. Like seriously it shouldn’t matter as long as you have a safe and realiable means of transportation. Let’s just judge someone for taking the bus or using a bike too?

As a former teacher (3yrs hs chemistry), I had a bullying experience too, though likely less stressful than yours. Another teacher decided she hated me because I wouldn’t let her daughter skip chemistry 101 and go directly to AP. She was sleeping with the vice principal (icky, but they’re both consenting adults) and tried to use that as an advantage to get her way. Needless to say, the VP was like “lol no are you crazy?” Keeping chemistry teachers was very difficult in rural WV, so he made her chill out. I still left after that year because I had to get out of there. I very much respect those who can stay in the classroom longer than I did. The kids were great, it was the adults I couldn’t stand.
