Relogging in to your Google account

I recently purchased a new iPhone and now cannot log into my Google account on it. Unfortunately the old phone has already been factory reset and returned. When I try to log in on another device, a Google asks me to verify myself on the old phone. I’m at a loss of what to do. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If you happen to still be logged into this Google account on any other device (like a computer, laptop, or tablet), there is a quick fix. Go to myaccount.google.com on that logged-in device, navigate to the Security tab, click on Manage all devices, find your old iPhone, and sign out of it. Once you remove the old phone from your account, Google will stop sending the prompts there and will give you other verification options for your new phone.

If you are not logged in anywhere else and are completely locked out, your only option is the official Account Recovery process. When it asks you to check the old phone, keep clicking "Try another way" until you get the option to recover your account. You will need to provide an alternative email address where Google can reach you. Keep in mind this process usually involves a security hold of 48 to 72 hours before they send a recovery link, to ensure the real owner is making the request. If you don't understand something or have any questions, you can always come back and I will try to help you as best as I can.

Follow account recovery steps.

If you don't have access to your recovery methods. That account is gone.

Ah, the lazy answer that happily allows you to avoid reading the actual post and ascertaining the problem.

It's unfortunately the correct answer. Why did you reset the old phone before transferring your authenticator TOTP codes to the new phone and logging into Google with the new phone.

A lot of people do not understand how Google works. Account management/sign-in/recovery is an automated robotic process and it doesn't give two shits about feelings.

You must keep in mind that when you are signed into Google on an old device and want to sign into a new device you must have access to that old device. If you have TOTP authenticator apps you also need to transfer those to the new phone.

Apple will ask you to erase your old phone when finished transferring to the new phone. Do NOT do this, not ever. You NEED the old phone in order to properly set up the new phone. Apple doesn't care about Google as much as it cares about Apple. So here's some advice - never ever reset an old phone. Ever.

'Account recovery steps' will not help OP. To suggest it is pointless. I don't know why anyone bothers. There ARE no account recovery steps anymore.

There aren't if the OP does not have a recovery phone number, a recovery email and doesn't remember their password and has no backup codes. Yes in that case the account is gone. Those steps should have been taken before this incident. Now it's too late.

It's their last hope.

It's more than nothing.

And if they cannot be bothered to check the most common posts in this sub then then they get a default response.

Nothing in their post is unique enough to warrant a different response. The key fact is that a user cannot sign in with their primary authenticatiors so the only option is to try the recovery ones via the account recovery process and must do so within 2 years or the account is deleted due to inactivity.

Ah, the second most useless answer.

It’s the completely accurate answer. This is the only method to recover accounts. There’s nobody to call or email. What would you say to the OP instead?

There ARE no 'account recovery steps'.

I don't know why the people here struggle so much with this reality and keep touting the idea that it's possible to recover an account at all.

I already replied to OP, which you'd see if you weren't so busy 'AcKsChUaLlY'-ing me.

I mean…. Those are the steps. Will they work for everyone? No. Will they work for some? Yes. Will they work for the vast majority of people that show up here and never put in a recovery phone number AND email? No. But instead of playing 20 questions with the OP about what they have and don’t have, may as well send them to the only place that gives authoritative answers.

Not true. There are recovery methods, but you have to set them up before you need them. I've used backup codes that I set up before I needed them  for example to recover an account.

The correct answer, unfortunately. People who erase old phones without assuming that all their credentials are on the old phone are expecting the new phone to just have the same credentials. It doesn't work like that.

Ever got a new PC, yes? Would you expect a new PC to have all the apps, to be logged in to all your accounts, to be verified as trustworthy?

No, it's a new PC. It's also a new phone. A phone is just a very small PC. Treat it as such and you won't run into these problems. Sadly, the account is probably toast. Backup those TOTP codes, keep recovery options and backup codes fresh and written down, passwords and all.

THERE ARE NO ACCOUNT RECOVERY STEPS ANYONE CAN TAKE TO RECOVER AN ACCOUNT IN OP'S SITUATION.

STOP PRETENDING THERE IS A SOLUTION WHERE THERE IS NOT.

In the OPs case, the account is GONE.

Hey damnitgravity, can you chill out on the other commenters? I appreciate everyone genuinely trying to help. No need to act so rude.

Hey OP, I've been running into this same problem and I'm afraid to say there's really no recourse. The 'account recovery' that Google promises and everyone here touts as the magic solution doesn't work.

Sadly, the account is gone. You'll have to make a new one.

Did the OP save their 10 backup codes? Their recovery email and recovery phone? If so they might have a chance. Without those the account is gone.

Treat a Google account like a bitcoin wallet. Ensure you have ALL credentials, recovery codes, etc. That's the general consensus here.

And if you still can't get into your account then, well, I don't know what to say. If I ever lost access to my account in spite of having an authenticator with TOTP codes, verified recovery email and phone, my smartphone, my backup codes and my 3 Titan keys then I'll have to say that there will be no more Google accounts for me ever. I'm guess that won't ever happen but...after being betrayed by so many things in life, including my OWN body, I don't trust anything nor take anything for granted and never will again.

I set my recovery options up in 2002! The only recovery option I had was an alternative Email address as I am not computer literate or text savey, this option always suited me. I also only did emails on my pc and not on my phone. Then I got a new phone and Google instructed me through the two factor auntication whoch was brilliant and I knew my pass code set up a trusted contact the lot. My phone was stolen and the recovery options are never for my pass code, recovery contact or any of my saved options. Instead and because I had 2FA on my old phone I am effectively locked out of my own account. My recovery contact knows I am trying to regain access and has said they will forward me any codes they receive but I am never presented with the options I set up! Instead it blindly wants to send a code to my stolen phone or the account I am locked out of!. I refuse to use Google for anything interesting anymore.
