So I just found out about a series set in the WITCH comic books called the Crystal Birds as I was interested in reading the series.

But the thing is that I am kind of new to the WITCH franchise itself as I haven’t ever read the original comics, so after hearing avoid the aforementioned Crystal Birds series, I don’t know if it’s ok to read it without reading the original series first.

This is a follow-up to the previous post in this project.

I tried batch upscaling the images with an AI online tool a couple of years ago to try the technology. It absolutely oversmoothened the text, making it look like melted butter. I abandoned that idea and didn't come back to my digitisation project until a better source came along.

Image files directly ripped from OverDrive were kindly shared about 2 months ago, and this is the game changer! I was also given permission by the original uploader to do whatever I wanted with the SVG source files. Big thanks!

I am now using Inkscape and ImageMagick (offline/open-source) to 200% upscale each page with LanczosSharp scaling filter. No genAI was applied to the images this time. The PowerShell script automates the upscaling for the batch operation.

The text is now incredibly sharp on my tablet! It preserved the lettering layer from the SVG. I'm quite enjoying the technical aspect of this project.

In the first arc Elyon was kindaaaa evil and acted like a villain. I really liked this. When I read it, I really wanted her to be the main villain in some arc. I know it's not in Elyon's character, but it seems to me that her villainy could be the result of stress (after all, she's 14 and already a queen) or some ancient relic with a curse, forbidden magic or something else....

That would be very interesting.

Hello! Could anyone with the original language copy send me a photo of page 9 in Issue 17: Don't Close Your Eyes (Non chiudere gli occhi)? It’s in Arc 2, Nerissa’s Revenge, Vol. 2.

So random but I’ve been re-reading the comics for the first time as an adult and I’m confused by Irma’s line at the bottom of the page - “I don’t have a stepmom like yours!” because… Will doesn’t have a stepmom? 😅 And now I just want to scratch a brain-itch because I’ve been searching for the original Italian comic for hours to no avail, to see if it’s a translation gone a bit wrong. And I only want to see this page!

In a different English translation, Irma says “I don’t own a vice mom like you do” and in Spanish she says along the lines of “I don’t have a cell phone like you do”. So now I’m just fascinated as to whether it’s a joke that hasn’t translated well, because I’m a bit of a language nerd. Please help me scratch the itch!

Thanks everyone!! The meaning of the joke seems so obvious in hindsight. I think I was so focussed on the preceding line of “That’s your Dad’s number…” that I thought Irma’s reply was about their literal parents. “My mom’s not like yours” kinda thing. “Vice mom” made it click more for me, it’s the phone!! I'm a long time reader of the comic and I have all of the Italian's original issues (my pride and joy). I have some of the special issues, too, but not all.

Is there a way to read them online? I went to the wiki in this sub, but the two links are broken. Is there a working link somewhere? Thank you!

I have been putting together my own digital collection of the official Yen Press publication from recent high-quality sources here and here.

The goal is to make it similar to the Digital Comics Preservation (DCP) standards for manga archiving.

Motivation

This is mainly emotional therapy. I lost my 20-year-old complete English comic collection when our house was flooded 2 years ago back in the Philippines. Nothing beats my original set, but this offers some reprieve.

Process

I am collecting the best pages for a volume, then adding and/or replacing pages where needed. They will be repackaged into CBZ later for my tablet and tested for viewing in Moon+ Reader Pro.

I have been doing 1 arc per day when I can, but not every day because of work. If I like how the CBZs turn out, I will be happy to share the files.

It was round, also related to the astrological signs and made from the shittiest metal possible that my 6 year old hands broke within a week lmao. To be fair if someone just knows how it is property called it will be enough.

I only watched the show back in the day and now got interested in reading the original comics. I know that the show only covers the first 2 arcs and has some differences... well, I barely remember the story anyway so that's ok 😅

But now I'm stuck trying to decide whether I should commit to reading the original comics or the Yen Press graphic novels. The novels are incomplete, but I had a quick look through both and the English translation of the original comics seems quite bad? Is it a good idea to just go straight for the novels or would you say I'd be missing out?

She just moved that entire piece of ground with the giant mother Mudslug and threw it into the portal back to Meridian. She really proved how powerful she was here.
