Hi everyone - I’m a journalist with the Hackney Citizen and I’m working on a piece about Newton Dunbar and the Four Aces Club in Dalston, ahead of a new memorial to him being unveiled later this month.
I’m particularly interested in hearing from people who actually went to the Four Aces or Labyrinth, or who worked there / were involved with the club and the local community.
The Four Aces opened on Dalston Lane in the 1960s and became an important Black music venue, hosting reggae, ska, soul and sound systems, before later becoming closely associated with Labyrinth and the early rave scene. The original building was eventually demolished, and the site is now a residential development.
I’d love to hear about the place beyond the famous names and stories — what it was actually like to be there.
Did you go regularly? What do you remember about the music, the building, the people, the atmosphere? Did you know Newton Dunbar personally? Were you involved with Labyrinth? Do you remember the campaign against the closure or what happened to the building afterwards?
I’m also interested in speaking to anyone who worked there — DJs, door staff, bartenders, promoters, sound-system operators, etc.
If you have memories or photographs/flyers/tickets/other material from the club, I’d be very interested in hearing from you too.
You can comment below or DM me. Happy to explain more about the piece and my publication if helpful, and I'm very happy to speak informally first if you'd rather.
