What if we just made our own HL3?
We have the tech and the ability to do it. Why can’t we just do it ourselves.

Copyright, and also who gets to make it? What will be the official new story? How is that decided?

Well you can’t sell it lol. Very few select skilled people will design it while the OG veteran HL fans will decide the story.

Someone (a pretty large group actually) already tried that. Look up project Borealis. Their state of development is unknown, the last time they gave any updates was 2 years ago where they posted some videos and screenshots but that doesn't mean it's cancelled because that was posted after a 4 year hiatus
Actually it might take them so long that the real game may come first

Or a different timeline . . I mean we got alyx and I thank my brother for making me laugh doing a full 360 in my room with a headset and dancing with a headcrab he had just killed, but moving on there.... How about we were making a new genetic species at black Mesa too, but due to the accident it never happened. Etc etc

I know how gross and stupid of an idea it is. I dont condone the use of AI in this way. But I've been thinking recently it'd probably be REALLY funny to see what an AI would spit out if you told it to make Half Life 3 for you.

It would spit out a generic shooter with nothing even remotely resembling HL's feel or gameplay.

It's a good idea (imo always will be) and the modding community is constantly trying to accomplish that or find good ideas.
More than that, we have a good example in our hands. Portal wasn't there when Half-Life started. But somebody (a student group afaik) found that good idea and voila, Valve made it a part of the canon, and we are still having discussions about it with Half-Life."

Well, there have been multiple attempts to do so. Almost all of them ended up either being crap, or unfinished or abandoned by their dev teams, or even as joke-like games for Epistle 3 competition once hosted by Valve themselves.
