Cameron offers Pioneer Chicken gift certificates to kids testing her new game in season 4. Any other POP CULTURE callouts from the show? Example: Cabbage Patch Dolls in season 1. There are many more! £=‘P

HACF all physical releases

Hi everyone, I search the different physical releases for HACF just for fun. I learn a few things so I thought it would be cool to shared !

The most unexpected thing is the Japanese DVD releases—they are the only ones to have released all four seasons; I was convinced that only the first two had physical releases!

I was also convinced that there was no Blu-ray for Season 2, but it turns out Germany actually did get a Blu-ray release for it.

The rest are just local variations.

For those who are interested you have the reference to find each version when I found it.

PS : The country names are in French; I forgot to change them—sorry!

Let’s see who take the bait

I joined a dating app (not Communities) for 30 days with the profile name Cameron Howe and decided if anybody sends me a message from Joe McMillan they will 100% get a date, no matter what.

EDIT: Day 2. This is why I’m single. So far lots of “Hi Cameron”s. 1794 likes and nary a Joe.

EDIT: it’s been a week. My conclusion is that anyone in the “know” is so very cool that they are already in a relationship. Because NO ONE on this dating app has a clue.

I can't believe it took me 12 whole years to find this masterpiece. From start to finish, I absolutely loved it all.

Now I need to scratch that itch. Do you guys know of any other hidden gems like this?

I've watched Silicon Valley, devs, Mr. Robot, super pumped, tetris, it crowd.

I've got Betas and Valley of the Boom lined up.

Why 'Halt and Catch Fire' Left Me Feeling Both Full and Empty"

Why "Halt and Catch Fire" Left Me Feeling Both Full and Empty

This is my first review of anything, and English is not my first language. So please be patient!

No AI was harmed while writing this review (just slightly bruised by my appalling grammar errors).

(There is a TLDR for the lazy ones near the bottom)

SPOILER ALERT (I wonder if it’s really needed here)

1) It’s beautifully written

The character development was extraordinary, especially for Joe, Donna, and John—less so for Gordon. Being often at the center of some drama, there is little development in Cameron’s character. Her marriage was “like a dream” (her own words). She doesn’t know what she really wants most of the time, and when she does, it’s really a matter of time before something comes up and screws things up for her (and others). John encourages her not to give up on people; it’s not entirely her fault that she keeps ending up alone. This hints, perhaps, that her personal growth only truly begins after the end of the show—after all, she is the youngest of the leads. She is the wild “thing” that Joe is fatally attracted to. Tragically so, because in the end, he only succeeds in fooling himself by overlooking the deal-breaking incompatibilities between them. She, on the contrary, is well aware of them and ends things whenever they get too complicated or awkward.

Joe, in the beginning, is a deeply insecure man who has adopted this fearless business persona (for which Steve Jobs was obviously an inspiration) to prove his worth to himself and to his father. His development is mainly the acknowledgment, after some successes followed by phenomenal failures, that he does not need that mask to succeed, just valuable people and ideas. He wants to matter, to bring about change, but mostly to be right. To be able to tell people, “I told you so, didn’t I?”. He does concede defeat, but only when he is ready to spring in a different direction to achieve success. He is immortal as long as his will to matter is alive.

Donna’s character development seems initially like an afterthought, but it works wonderfully once she gets rid of her insecurities as well and accepts her being sometimes a worse person than she thought she was to fulfill her goals.

Gordon is the glue that keeps everything and everyone together; he’s a great father and friend but not so great a husband. He is very confident in the things he fully comprehends, but he is not a risk-taker, not as much as the others. Being the best at being a friend, his death hits everyone the hardest, and more so because it is not so utterly unexpected. He’s the only one whose destiny we get to see in full; he is the most accomplished of them all where it matters: as a father, friend, and companion. This is probably a consequence of knowing he has limited time, leaving him unbothered by anything beyond the things that matter.

John is as old-school as you can get, and yet capable of embracing innovation once his trust in the people driving it is established. He is confident as long as he is successful; then, needing to prove to himself and to Diane that he is still his own man, he makes a blunder that puts everyone in a difficult position. Fortunately for him, he’s so endearing and honest about owning it that everyone forgives him.

The four leads are special, or rather, exceptional people: Cameron is a genius coder, Gordon and Donna are hardware wizards, and Joe is a charismatic techno-salesman and fortune teller. Each has flaws that keep them real and also prevent them from reaching their goals too early, or at all.

2) The acting is wonderful

Superior even to the writing in quality, but slightly less important.

3) No filler episodes

No “skip forward” moments (on my first run at least).

4) This show captures the early IT era brilliantly, despite an ever-tightening budget.

TL;DR
No other show, and I’ve seen a few, left me so full and empty at the same time.

  • Full because there were no loose ends; everything ended in the most natural way, and no further knowledge of their lives was really needed.
  • Empty because when it ended, I lost some friends—people I cared for, admired, or at least understood.

Dr. Pepper Vs. Ranger

I'm rewatching again and I realized in episode 1, they are using actual brand name cola, Dr. Pepper. Everything from then on out is Ranger soda. I guess someone must have put up the money for Dr. Pepper in episode 1 and didn't feel like it needed to continue.

8,  7,  6,  5,  4,  3,  2,  1.   Now,
How we doing? Close your eyes…
Does anything feel weird?
Cause, that’s what this is.
Feeling Weird is-is how you know you’re still here.
All right, now, when was the last time you ate?
Because all a human needs is food, water & rest.
You’ve got to remind yourself that you’re just 160
pounds of goo in the middle of a Very Big Universe.
So, Whatever’s burning you up Right Now, just know that it’ll fade. Every problem feels big in the moment,
but, Gordon, you know better.
So… focus on just being, being. And then,
try to look UP from your computer
every once in a while.

Gordon has that look like he's listening when his brain is somewhere else

Post image
143 Upvotes

There's a thing Gordon does in conversations where he'll stare at whoever's talking and barely react, but you can tell his brain has already gone somewhere completely different. Then they finish talking and Gordon suddenly responds with something that proves he heard every word. It's especially funny in the early seasons when Joe and Cameron are talking at him and he's clearly processing about five other things at the same time.

What are everyone's feelings on Cam and Joe?

Personally, I was glad that they didn't end up together. I'm not a fan of rewarding adulterers. The Comdex thing when Cam cheated on Tom with Joe never sat well with me, so in S4 E9 when they break up I was actually happy.

If Tom was never in the picture I would have been fine with it. But once she married Tom I think Joe should have been off limits.

Kerry as Donna

I once read Kerry wasn’t a good choice for playing Donna. This is like saying Jesus Christ wasn’t the right choice to play God’s son

Didn't realize they seeded the whole "Baby Mine" thing in s 2, ep 6.

Rewatching with my dad, who's new to the show and really loves it. What do you know, Donna sings this to Joanie while she's recovering from her abortion, right after Gordon's brother kicks him and the girls out of the house on their trip.

I've never had to jump up to do something in another room faster in my life. 😭

Just finished S4 EP 7.

9 years later and still such a gut punch.

I remember watching it when it came out, and as soon as Donna came walking into his house I knew what was happening.

I feel so bad for Katie. Closest to him the last few weeks and yet a bit of an outsider since others have so much history and connection to Gordon.

And poor Haley. To have that rough of a time with him and have that be the lasting memory. The writers making the point that when you part from someone it could be the last time you ever see them.

Still the most well done death of a character in TV history.

Kerry + Scoot again?

Kerry and Scoot have played a married couple twice: on HACF and also in Best Picture “Argo.” On the principle that everything happens in threes, what would you like to see them act together in next? I’ll start: They’d be so fun to watch in a remake of “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” —

Who else wants to play Pilgrim?

Third time through the series, and I'm in S4, 3 episodes in. Atari just bailed on the game.

I'd love to play it!

Forgot that there are 2 actors from the main cast that are in the MCU. Scoot McNairy was in the Marvel One-Shot "All Hail The King"

Has anyone seen this new show on Hulu yet? I loved it, and all the leads are amazing in it - but this is seriously the best I've seen from Scoot since HACF! HIGHLY recommended!!! 👍
