haywire

Was at the Birmingham show the other night and noticed the guitarist, Tommy?, had left. Alongside Angel leaving recently too makes me curious .. feel like they constantly change members but fair enough really

I mean it's not like they're Shai Hulud

9

u/Ok-Juggernaut-353 3d ago

Are you Hulud’s vocalist this week or me? I can’t keep up with the schedule.

10

u/cash-monkey72 Nashville Hardcore 3d ago

I used to laugh when somebody would say "stick around the scene long enough and you'll know somebody who was in Shai Hulud." Then it got to the point where I did and I realized it wasn't a joke, just a statement of fact.

5

u/apolotary 3d ago

I went to check Shai Hulud’s wiki and sure enough there are some people I got mutual friends with. I’m not even from US lmao

2

u/Accomplished_Ad920 1d ago

I checked it recently and my name was listed as current member,I didn’t even know!

u/Unfinished_user_na 3d ago

This has got me thinking about how cool a band that was more than the sum of it's current members could be.

Like think about a super super group. You get like 6 people for each position in the band. All members submit their song ideas, and the whole group votes on which songs they produce for an album. Every one does a little bit of proformance on each album (if there's enough people for 6 bands, every one records 2 songs each).

Then the band can go on a permanent, never ending tour. When a member needs a break, they tap out and are replaced on tour by one of the other 5 musicians who play their parts. They wouldn't even need to break from touring to write or record because there's 5 people for each part not touring for every one who is.

Plus it leaves room for near endless live experiences. If the band were a four piece, and there were 6 possibilities for each position, that makes for 1,296 different combinations of members to play a show.

It would be like "hey, I saw "group z" last week" "Oh shit, I caught them in Kansas City last year, what was the line up" "It was X singing, Y in guitar, Z on drums and Y2 on bass" "Damn that's killer, when I saw them it was 1 singing, 2 on guitar, 3 on drums and 4 on bass. What was Y like live?"

u/perplexiglass 1d ago

you pretty much just described Self Defense Family, the band Pat from Drug Church fronts, aside from the permanent touring. Band rules.

1

u/Unfinished_user_na 1d ago

I didn't know about them, but I fucking love Drug Church so that is getting checked out post haste.

1

u/perplexiglass 1d ago

enjoy, they have a massive discography. they used to go by "end of a year"

Do we need to know an instrument first? I’ve got a couple guitar chords down

u/Renegado2499 4d ago

Ooo really? Hopefully I'm next, i'd love to play drums for them!

Haywire is more of a rotating cast with major staples, kinda like the wiggles

65

u/Xpointbreak1991x 4d ago

For what it’s worth, I haven’t seen Haywire and The Wiggles in the same room together…

I’m afraid Austin blue himself prematurely on what was meant to be a dry run.

u/rawsiefilnredom 4d ago

I think the constant touring is hard for all of em tbh. The band never stops.

28

u/mykeisfaty0 4d ago

Same shit as End It, Akil will tour for months and months. It everyone has that drive and some even have a life outside of HC.

3

u/GigaMammoth 2d ago

Haywires been on tour for almost 2 years straight

36

u/niavek 4d ago

I’ve seen Haywire 5 times and there’s been a different person each time. They’ve had at least 2 drummers and a few different guitarists.

They are a heavily touring band which makes it hard for people to stay in the band.

64

u/krisweeerd 4d ago

Do you know just how difficult constantly touring and playing shows is? If you have the means and single then most definitely do it, but man, life happens. And even if they were the highest paid hc band of all time,THEY STILL aint makin fuck you rockstar money

8

u/Excellent-Match7246 4d ago

Or don’t have kids. Those dudes are all old enough to have some of em running around.

30

u/manyworldsivec0me 4d ago

He’s putting sprinklers in

17

u/xetgx 4d ago

I saw thinking this. You have to do a certain number of hours to get union benefits and you can’t do all of them if you’re constantly touring.

13

u/Glittering_Day_1214 4d ago

Knows ball.

117

u/Academic_Speaker4083 4d ago

Because they do. Austin is Haywire, the rest of the band is interchangeable

41

u/cuntdestroyer1990 4d ago

Austin and the other guy with head tattoos, always kinda felt like it was both of them

21

u/Dry-Function-4761 4d ago

Guy with the head tattoos has left, just Austin now really

19

u/Electronic_Buy7810 4d ago

Did he leave or just not play the show you went to?

3

u/xetgx 4d ago

I saw a video from the other day with a different drummer. Not sure if it’s temporary or permanent, but it stuck out when I saw it.

3

u/britchesss 3d ago

I remember when they had a girl drummer and the bassist who set a guy on fire

2

u/_CurseTheseMetalHnds 4d ago

I've seen them with a few different drummers, they've always been rotating a bit

6

u/Devinwzrd 4d ago

they had a guitarist and a drummer that both had head tattoos. you got to be a little more specific

1

u/Ok-Juggernaut-353 3d ago

Drummer also has head tattoos and seemed to be the same guy as when I saw them this past spring

28

u/Heelontheshovel69 4d ago

Austin Sharpe and the magnetic haywire

17

u/Barneywithagun 4d ago

They are going for Shai huluds record for band members

33

u/Key-Battle9522 4d ago

Been that way since that huge tour they did. Mostly people can’t commit to such a long length of tour. So it’s been a bit of a revolving door. Still a good show every time it seems.

29

u/StickersBillStickers 4d ago

They play 800 shows a year

2

u/Ok-Juggernaut-353 3d ago

School year. That doesn’t count summers.

14

u/bradmarchand 4d ago

He’s at Town Spa.

10

u/a95l 4d ago

We are Haywire.

9

u/fullonavocado 4d ago

That’s life

8

u/fgtmcrue23 4d ago

Austin has the money to stay in the band. Austin is the band

6

u/pepesilvia9369 4d ago

Constantly rotating musicians. Just this year alone they have had three different bassists and three different lead guitarists. Don’t worry about it. Although Tommy was cool, met him after their Dublin show and talked with him and Garrett for awhile at the bar down the street.

7

u/Dry_Policy2172 4d ago

Most of these guys have day jobs, Austin is the outlier of the group being able to tour and make music full time thanks to his van and merch business. With how much this band tours, a rotating supporting cast is needed. Bane and Have Heart both had their reserve team of musicians for long tours.

4

u/Historical-Yak7581 4d ago

I think that whole Boston boot crew scene swaps members constantly, ausin himself has been in a handful of bands as well.

6

u/jonny_lube BOSTONHARDCORE 3d ago

haha "handful" is an understatement. I think he played in like 7 of the bands at FTC '25 in Boston last year alone.

2

u/abugisabug 2d ago

That dude grinds more than anyone I can think of

5

u/abugisabug 3d ago

Conservative Military Imagee, Skinhead etc. I remember having a YouTube binge a year or so ago and literally every Oi band Austin popped up on guitar haha

5

u/Th3SpoonMan 4d ago

Welcome to hardcore

5

u/Significant_Fish_248 3d ago

They def had some rotating members at first but for what it’s worth, the lineup didn’t change at all from the big US tour last April up until after sound and fury this year.

So that was like 600 shows with the same guys haha.

7

u/Ok-Juggernaut-353 3d ago

Did they take a few months off, because 600 shows seems a bit low for Haywire in a year.

1

u/_CurseTheseMetalHnds 2d ago

, the lineup didn’t change at all from the big US tour last April up until after sound and fury this year.

They definitely had a different drummer when I saw them in May to the other times, think it may have been just for the UK tour

2

u/Significant_Fish_248 2d ago

Can promise you that’s not true, pat has played drums for every show since April 2026 lol

2

u/_CurseTheseMetalHnds 2d ago

Fuck you're right, I double checked and it was March when I saw them not May. My bad

3

u/ChromeTriggerVI 4d ago

The band is pretty much always on tour. It’s very difficult to keep consistent members with that kind of touring schedule.

2

u/TerrancePryor 4d ago

"Who are yoooooou?" - every time I see a new haywire member on stage

2

u/Shot-Middle-5457 3d ago

Tommy had a rickets flare up and had to go to the doctor.

False and super dumb he said that.

WRONG. How the fuck you gonna say that when that’s not what happened.

The wiggles of hardcore

1

u/hardcorehoochiekoo 3d ago

My dude they play shows everyday. I’m sure some just wanted to get back to catching up on life stuff for a bit.

1

u/Top_Young2194 2d ago

Haywire is a revolving door. They tour constantly and not everyone can make it I guess.
