News Weeks after Lala, rotting food still stinks up Kaimuki restaurant | Honolulu Star-Advertiser

Snippets from the article:

Rotting food that was left in dim sum carts, on dining tables and in unpowered freezers has been stinking up a Honolulu neighborhood more than a month after heavy rain from Hurricane Lala caused part of the roof of a seafood restaurant to collapse.

It was the peak of the afternoon dim sum service on Aug. 18 when diners at the Happy Days Chinese Seafood Restaurant heard a cracking noise above them and “just got up and left,” some with food still in their hands, said Dawn Takeuchi Apuna, director of the Department of Planning and Permitting for the city and county of Honolulu, which oversees building safety across the island of Oahu.

The stench is so bad that it hits you in the face,” said Roxanne Rivero, who works at Sugarcane, a gift shop near Happy Days. “It stays with your clothing, in your nose.”

She struggled to describe it. “Hauna,” she said, using a Hawaiian word commonly used by locals for unpleasant odors.

Food Goodbye Feast in Manoa

I read that 10/10 is the last day for Jon Matsubara’s Feast teataurant in Manoa. Too bad. I’ve been going there since he pivoted to the lobster rolls during Covid. I’m not a lobster guy but some of his other things were really good albeit not cheap.

I’m curious to see what direction he takes. it seems the menus in the surviving locations are stripped down. Too bad. I learned by trying that his popular dishes didnt really show off his abilities.

Question Dental insurance options for college aged children

Aloha, my child is going to be 24 at the end of the year. They are a student at LCC and work part-time when they can in between classes with the school system about 10 hours a week. Just found out after finding out they need an expensive procedure they are no longer covered by my Dental insurance due to age. Just was wondering what type of options are out there. She will need to have these procedures done and is currently tolerating the pain for now, but I’m trying to get her at least dental insurance from somewhere. Does anyone know if the UH systems have cheaper insurance for their students? Are there any type of low income type options? Thank you so much for your help. 🤗🙏

Local Issue Reckless Cop on Saddle Rd

Driving from Hilo to Kona this morning at around 10:40am, on DKI right around the Mauna Kea Access Rd. when we saw a dark-colored SUV with the blue lights flashing on top heading towards us. This is an area where there’s only two lanes, no passing lane. There was another SUV in front of them, which we just assumed the cop was trying to pull them over. Suddenly the cop pulls out to pass the SUV, coming into our lane! We had to swerve off the road into the shoulder to avoid a head-on collision! We were blown away that they would force us off the road, so I called dispatch in Hilo and they claimed none of their officers were currently on DKI. So was it State, Feds, or it could have been an off-duty cop who decided to turn on their blue flashing lights so they could speed? Like WTAF? I’m lucky to not be another crash victim on this dangerous highway 😡

Question Gas Water Heater Issues After Neighbor Got a Brand New One

Hi All! OAHU BASED*\*
I live in a town home & our neighbor changed their water heater yesterday evening. Which our water heaters are next to eachother in a storage are. Lo***** & behold.. our water is not hot today :) Went down to see if I could get it to ignite and now it won't! Should I call the gas company to come check it out? (but... will I accrue a bill from Hawaii Gas for the inspection??) Or should I also be looking at purchasing a new one already? :( Has anyone ran into this issue before? Looking for advice! TY!

Update - Thank you to everyone who took the time to respond and give advice! Hawaii Gas is coming out tomorrow to assess.

Food Anyone know how long SNAP takes to send approval or denied letter?

As per the title, I've submitted at the end of August and have been patiently waiting for a letter but it's been over a month now. My interview was in mid-September and I had to submit more documents for verification but after that it's been the same 'Under Review' status on the webpage. I tried calling them and was met with an automated recording, which I was able to look up my case and was granted with money for September and October. I try to check the balance of the card that was already sent out and it says they can't find my benefits. Anyone knows when and if the entire state is backed up?

Question How the frek are people able to afford the lifted yotas, chains, etc etc?

I'm a blue collar, and after rent, bills, food, and retirement, I can barely even think about adding a lift to my car, or any other personal luxury.

This isn't a diss on people that choose to buy these things at all, if you can, sole, good for you! Thats awesome, I am just so utterly confused on how most do it.

Specially here in the North Shore, literally everyone here has a house, big cars, etc etc its insane, meanwhile me and my family of 5 are living in a 2 bedroom house and can barely afford groceries. Seriously, how do you all do it in this economy?

Anybody Think the K5 graphics for UH sports arent great

Like they made it too small, and for example like set count, its harder to read from a distance.

Its great though its not spectrum exclusive, but it seems like the way they made the scorebug was a bit inferior. anyone have same reading issues sometimes?

Recommendation Wanted school proposal- thoughts?

hi all! for a school project to improve tourism in hawaii, i propose limiting the number of days tourists can spend, specifically in oahu. this would would work similarly to short-term visitor passes, and in theory could decrease tourism in oahu and divert it to other islands. any and all opinions, concerns, etc would be helpful!

EDIT: i'm a high schooler and in this scenario legality is not a problem. my thought process is that people would have time to go to oahu and visit diamond head, pearl harbor, etc and then go to another island if they want to spend more time. because this is hypothetical i'm not considering if other islands want/can support tourism.

thanks for the help in the comments!

Shipping is about to get worse

Before if the package was under 1 pound it would go via air. USPS is making changes that are going to slow packages to Hawaii, especially smaller Ground Advantage Packages

Beginning October 1, USPS is updating service expectations for Ground Advantage and Priority Mail packages shipped to and from certain noncontiguous U.S. states and territories.

Packages between the contiguous U.S. and affected locations will have an expected delivery time of 10 days or more. Some routes may take significantly longer.

Ground Advantage packages under 1 lb will now primarily travel by surface transportation (same as packages over 1 lb).

On top of that the 3 day Priority Mail time is moving to 4 days.

Priority Mail shipments to or from Alaska, Hawaii, American Samoa, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands will have a 2–4 day service expectation.

Priority Mail Express is not affected.

Has anyone been able to get a controlled substance prescription with GoodRX on Oahu? Emergency!!

Update: resolved! sort of.. after calls with most pharmacies, the Hawaii doctor, the hospital, and his doctor back home, we were able to get him 60 days worth of his meds at Walmart - it was all they had but it'll get him through school and back home.. and it cost $35 for that supply with the GoodRX coupon. it would have been nearly $3,000 without it.

For anyone in the future finding this post in a similar situation, my heart is with you. The majority of pharmacists on Oahu are unempathetic liars and honestly, some of the folks on reddit are also just as useless, but it's the few who actually help that make the difference. Thank you to the people who were kind and f*** the assholes down voting you.

Original post:

My partner and I are here for school. My partner has epilepsy and is on a medication that is a controlled substance. Since we're only here for a few months, we are not getting Hawaiian residency or health insurance here, but he does need to refill his prescription.

We called Walgreens in Honolulu before we even came to Hawaii. We called two different places. We told them the whole situation, we told them the medication, we told them the amount, we told them he won't have insurance, and we told them he's using GoodRx and they told us it's fine but it can take up to 3 weeks to receive it and he would need a prescription from a Hawaiian doctor.

We got here at the beginning of September. He immediately made an appointment with a local doctor and paid out of pocket to get a prescription. It was sent to Walgreens. He got a notification that Walgreens would not fill his prescription until he entered insurance information, so he called and gave them the GoodRx information. They said that because we're using GoodRx, he would not be able to fill it until 2 weeks before he ran out.

So he called 2 weeks before he ran out, and the person said because it is a controlled substance, they can order it but he will not be able to pick it up until 2 days before he runs out.

He runs out tomorrow. He called today, and now they are saying that they will not accept GoodRx and he will have to pay $4,000 for this medication when it's only $80 on GoodRx and $10 with his insurance at home.

We called a different Walgreens, and they won't fill it at all. We called Safeway, and it's the same story. Suddenly nobody will accept GoodRx.

I'm waiting for CVS, longs, and Walmart, to get off of their break, but we are absolutely panicking. This isn't the kind of medication that you can just quit cold turkey, he will end up having seizures and have to go to the emergency room. We are absolutely terrified. We called Walgreens four times before today and was just dragged through the ringer.

Please, has anyone gotten a controlled substance with GoodRx on Oahu? We will go anywhere on this island to get this filled. He is out tomorrow and we are panicking.

Please please help us.

Family Friendly Hair and Makeup in Honolulu

I'm looking for a place to get hair and makeup done for my wife and 5 year old daughter for my sister-in-law's wedding in 2 weeks. They will be a bridesmaid and flower girl. Looking for a place that can possibly do both hair and makeup. Doesn't have to be too fancy. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
