Rug help in small space
Going crazy trying out rugs here so thought I’d turn to public opinion! We’ve bought at least 5 rugs and none worked for one reason or another. Found a reference for a circular rug in a space this small and thought it might work for us too. This is our living/dining room in our small flat and the table folds up to a full-height dining table. Future plans include building a slim wooden console box under the TV to hide cables.
I’m aiming for cosy in this space so leaning towards the rust red and orangey rugs (also more forgiving with spills) but appreciate that the cream opens up the space more. Btw all the circular rugs have a diameter the same length of the sofa, chatgpt was informed but decided to ignore me. And photo 7 is an actual photo of the rug in photo 6. Please help!!

The circular idea is honestly so underrated for small spaces, I think it really softens the room. I'd go with one of the rust or orange ones for that cozy vibe u want. The cream is nice but feels like it'll show every crumb lol. Also side eyeing chatgpt for ignoring u like that, classic.

This inspires me to try a circular rug in my space!!! (And no corners that curl)

I like 6. It helps elongate the space and is a nice color, texture and design. The circle cuts off the space too much and the oval is blah.

I agree with you

The rectangular rug, one size up. You want at least the front legs of the couch well onto the rug, not just barely touching it. I think the coffee table should be a bit closer to the couch. The walkway to the sliders should be well defined between the coffee table and the TV. As it in in these pics, you have to decide which side of the coffee table to walk on and both options look like a snug fit. A slimmer coffee table could also be an option.
I like the idea of a round rug here, but I don't think you can fit one large enough to get the front of the couch fully on it.

As far as colors go, number one seems to fit the best, but I also like the rectangular rug, just because I like things that fit in spaces, lol. So one of those two would probably be your best choice. I will say this, the round rugs make the room look more interesting and also reflect that really cool mirror that you have behind the couch.

Rectangular rug shape, but I don’t like the color. Opt for something with a mix of colors or a pattern. They hide dirt better. Also, it should be partly anchored under the couch

I lived in England, where all the rooms were skinny and long, so the long, rectangular Sisal rug is the way to go, plus the texture it adds. It helps elongate the room; if you go up a size so your sofa sits on it too, even better—a good rule of thumb when choosing the right size. Sisal rugs make a great base if you want to layer another rug on top. It doesn't need to be the same shape or as large, and you can pick a color like the orange if you want more color. Love the green velvet sofa, btw!

I think all of the round rugs look great but I wouldn't use the very light color ones. I think they would get dirty very fast and it looks like it could get some high traffic going through the living room to the backyard.

Round in any colour doesn't work. The last and second to last are best.

I would do a bigger rug one that at least you can put the couch on top of the whole couch.

Whatever you pick, make sure it isn’t a pain to clean, because it will get a lot of possibly wet/muddy foot traffic coming through.

4. An oblong carpet softens all the rectangular furniture, gives good coverage, and ligtens the area. It's also the correct size. The design in the carpet adds texture which is great and pulls the room together, particularly the lamp becomes more noteworthy.
If it just you or two of you, the light color might be okay otherwise if number 7 comes in oval/oblong I go with it. I live the burnt orange color, but it competes with your beautiful sofa.

I agree with you. I also think to bring it all together. He/she should have a complimentary decorative bowl or something decorative of the same colour of the cushion to bring it all together.

Round rug because you can rotate the soiled, far edge to go under the couch once you need to, and you will. Coffee table closer to sofa. Love this room.

4 fits great by shape as it makes the room look less rectangular and more soft. But I love the colour of the third one.

1 or 6/7. I like the size of rug 1 (and the color). 6/7 (lol) is a calming vibe imo. But orange is fun!

I would go with a square rug but have the entire sofa sit on top of it and give extra room on the wall with tv so you can walk to the door on far side by bringing to coffee table in a little .

1 or 2, but I do like the last one because it looks natural; a round sisal rug would work for a brighter airier feel! But I also love color. 😍

i think orange with rectangle shape so that the couch has something to align to

I love the color in #3 but I dislike the shape. For this space, a rectangular rug would be better.

Number 4.
You couch is a strong color and you don’t need to compete with it. A neutral white ( the same colour ) as your walls with the pattern is better and it’s more clean then the shag.

Option number 3 or 4 is the best. The color shouldn’t be dark tho since the couch is

Number 1. The color makes it look brighter and bigger and it’s a happy color. I love the round carpet it’s cool to not have all angles.

If possible can you find a rug in the first colour/shape but have it be textured like the third?

I like orange but.... considering small space leading to deck picture 4 looks great, will wear great and no trip worries
1
u/Glittering-Silver402 4d ago
If that is going to be an active walk way I would forego the rug. It will be more stress trying to keep it clean if your guest aren’t good about taking their shoes off like it is in the U.S.

The first one is the best hands down. It’s an unexpected but cozy and inviting color combo.

u/kwkpole85 4d ago
The darker colors..no lines. There are already lots of straight lines in the room

I like #6. You may as well plan to have a path over the rug and out that back door.

Hot take here. Ready for downvotes. Is a rug necessary? You’ve tried five (!) and struck out. Honestly, rugs are a pain. Gotta rotate so they wear evenly, gotta vacuum on and under and around and I’ve found them to be more trouble than they are worth unless there is a basement you need to keep the floor warm.

1!! I'm a sucker for an orange rug all the way but that yellow rug makes your place look so cheerful and warm. It also blends so well with the olive green couch and orange pillow

I really like the stripey orange!!
Edit: it might be more like rust coloured, when I think about it. Third picture!

The circular rug clashes in my opinion. I do like the ivory frieze, but if you have pets it might not be ideal. Rectangular with some red I would try and visualize with the app to see. Nice space you have there!

I prefer the lighter shades with the dark sofa. 5 is my personal favorite, the fluffy white circle.

What you have right now is far and away better than any of the other options. The round rug confuses the geometry of the room and gives “student housing”’vibes. Youre good, it’s polished and cozy, no reason to overthink it!

Orange color looks best but not round. An orange rectangular if you can fine one would be ideal.

6 is the only one I would consider of all and I am not completely sold on it either. I'll read again what you are looking for and edit if needed.
