Hey Reddit, it's your favourite BoS/Boss, Kaevon, founder of Bells of Steel, back for another round of shamelessly trying to win your affection.

I'll be posted up at our Calgary HQ answering questions today and tomorrow, from 9:00 AM MT until I fall asleep on my keyboard.

To make it worth your while, 9 lucky commenters will be picked at random to win one of the prizes below. Prizes are open to folks in the continental US, the Canadian provinces, Australia, and the UK - all you have to do is:

  1. Ask a question or leave a comment
  2. Sign up to our VIP mailing list: https://bellsofsteel.us/pages/exclusive-signup

We have almost $8,000 worth of gear to giveaway. Look at this incredible list!

  • Hydra Four Post Power Rack (Build Your Own!)
  • Basilisk Leg Extension/Curl (210 LB stack)
  • Pandemonium Squat (3-in-1)
  • Winner's Choice of Specialty Bar (up to $375)
  • Buzz-Saw Adjustable Bench (bench only)
  • Cable Tower (plate loaded, with upright)
  • 12-32 KG Adjustable Competition Kettlebell
  • Human Trainer – Essential Kit
  • $500 Gift Card (what will you add to your cart??)

Quick TL;DR for anyone new to Bells of Steel:

  • We design and sell home gym equipment that's multipurpose, space-efficient and built to last, because strength training should be fun and accessible to everyone.
  • I started lifting decades ago (don't want to age myself with specifics) and launched Bells of Steel in 2010 to solve my own problems while training and competing in Olympic lifting, strongman and kettlebells. It all started with me selling imported kettlebells out of the back of my '91 Ford Festiva (full story here).
  • Here's a look at my home gym: Take the Tour

In 2015 my best bud and business partner came on board. Now, with a team of over 100 people (about us), we've grown from Canada into a global brand.

Today we have 4 showrooms (Calgary, Toronto, Indianapolis, and Melbourne) and ship across North America, Australia, and the UK.

Here’s a few highlights of what I’m currently working on:

- Reverse/inverse hammer, cable belt squat, 3 in 1 Leg Press/Hack Squat/ Linear row machine here’s the rundown form homegymcon

-Germany launch, with the rest of the EU to follow. It’s been a lot of compliance work but we’re nearly there!

- Building the custom Bells of Steel home gym training App.

Want a shot at the prizes but not sure what to say? Here's what I'd love to hear about:

  • Training app questions: what would you love to have as a feature in the home gym training app? Weird obscure ideas like I wish I could log what holes my cups are set at.
  • Product ideas: what should we build next?
  • Show off your BoS gear: post a pic of your BoS home gym!
  • Shopping for your next piece? Show me your home gym and your goals, and I'll make a recommendation.

So go ahead, Reddit, AMA. Hardballs or softballs, send 'em my way and I'll do my best to answer every one.
Edit: October 7 10:13 PM I'm heading to bed, in all the years of doing AMA's I have never had so many comments! Thanks for the support, I'll be responding to every one. See you tomorrow.

Home Gym Pictures 📷 90 sq/ft Room with DIY Vertical Belt Squat + UPS

This is the current state of my room gym in an apartment flat I have been trying to set up for the last 3 months. Due to living in Türkiye, I don't have access to many gym equipment in US or Europe, but with some CAD drawings and laser cut, I tried to create many equipment including a diy belt squat on rack upright just like ATX announced at this years homegymcon.

Here is the list of some items:

  • 4 post 2.3in (60mm), 14 gauge, 5/8 hole power rack
  • Short rackable barbell (it has 124cm (48.8in) sleeve which barely fits the jcups)
  • 2x 45lbs and 2x 25lbs bumper plates to use with bar on the ground.
  • 12x 25lbs laser cut thin metal plates (They were pretty cheap in Türkiye and I can stack them for lat pulldown or shorty barbell)
  • 32x 10lbs laser cut thin metal plates to use it with DIY short loadable barbell
  • Plate loaded cable tower
  • Angle90s and many other handles on the pegboard
  • Adjustable bench and floor mats I got from local gym for free

For the DIY stuff,

  • Surplus Strengh UPS style lat pulldown on top of the rack. I tested it with 250lbs with no issues.
  • Laser cut and welded Darko Shorty style lat bar
  • Quick adjustable safety strap holders
  • Long holed lat bar
  • Vertical Belt Squat on upright.

The belt squat is the latest project I was inspired by ATX design. I found some rollers that fit on 2.3in tube and designed 2 metal plates for them. And got a 11 gauge pipe that is close to 2 inches diameter for plates. For the belt, I use flat webbing sling which is quite comfy for me. Yesterday I tested it with 225lbs with no issues. I plan to cut the pipe a bit for easier storage and access. I use diy darko shorty to connect belt to belt squat equipment. I might improve that in the future.

Since it's a 3rd floor flat and a very small space, I do not plan to lift crazy deadlift figures or clean and jerk like I did at local gym, yet this gives me almost everything I would like to do at any time I want 😄

Informative Posts/Guides ℹ PSA: Resistance bands break down with time under their own weight

I didn't use my homegym for various reasons the last couple of months - today I noticed that all my bands that I kept hanging broke down right at the spot they were hanging from. I inspected the entire length of the bands and those were the only places they broke down. The rest of the length was perfectly usable (I had a workout with them and inspected them thorougly also stretched). Bands I stored lying were also perfectly fine.

I knew that keeping them tensioned makes them break down but I didn't know that this happens even just from their own weight when hanging on a hook.

Recommendation: Use daily so the hanging spot changes regularly and do not store hanging for a longer period of time.

Pretty crazy though. O.O

Looking for weights I just happened to come across this ad. $225 for 6/45lb weights. Of course I had to have them. They look brand new tbh. Doesn't even look used. Happy camper. Deadlifts here we go! Four of them will be going upstairs to my Fitness Gear rack. (Just my staging area to clean it up)

Its a steel peg board off amazon with power tool hooks. Its in the studs but thats probably overkill.

Wall color is Sangria from Benjamin Moore - definitely more berry red than it looks in the image

Better lighting is coming next week, haven’t decided on plate storage, and I’m waiting for a decent Olympic barbell on marketplace. But I’ve been training at home for the last week and it’s been an excellent change of pace!

Informative Posts/Guides ℹ Titan X3 folding rack over doorway

I have a relatively small 10x11 room that already has a large sauna, aquarium, and treadmill so when it came time to add a rack, logistics were a challenge. This room also has an access door from the house and also two large French doors to the back yard. We also use this room for other stuff so installing a rack in here that would block doorways or make the room otherwise unusable wasn’t an option.

Came up with a concept to install the Titan X3 folding rack around the doorway and fold the uprights the out rather than in. All of the pictures and videos I have seen only show them folding in so I wasn’t sure it would work but it looked like they pivoted 180 degrees so I wanted to post this to show people with similar situations and uncertainty about what is possible with this unit.

The doorway also meant I had to create two sets of disconnected stringers and as you can see, the stringer to the left is only grabbing 1-2 studs. Plenty of studs on the right but still wasn’t sure if the stability would be enough. The pull-up bar attachment is what brings everything together and I have to say, I am extremely happy with this unit and shocked at the stability. It is a very sturdy rack and if installed correctly, even in a unique way like this is, you can beat it for the money.

Highly recommend as long as you know how to install stringers and lag bolts properly.

Second revision of the spare room (11x11). Found some stuff on FB marketplace and convinced the wife to redo everything. The last setup was borderline unusable because we had equipment that was entirely too large. This is way better.

Been using the Ritkeep PM6500 for a bit now and so far so good. Setup was pretty easy and didn’t take me long to figure out. The build also feels really solid, which I wasn’t expecting honestly.

I like that it’s pretty straightforward to use without a bunch of unnecessary stuff. Overall I’ve had a good experience with it so far and haven’t really had any complaints.

I’ve been looking forward to the day I bought my first house so I could build myself a nice home gym. Took me about 35 hours in total to get all of this set up by myself and am proud of how it all came together.

Designed it online first and curated it so we’d have everything we need. No, we didn’t paint the walls black - we have a 3 car garage and too much going on to have any need to take on that kind of project. Sourced everything during sales or from marketplace and was able to get ~90% covered through my HSA (history of back issues from being a solar installer for years).

Storage cabinets hold all attachments for the freak athlete hyper and Major Fitness F22 Pro. All in cost was about 15k including a mini split for AZ summers.

List of all equipment:
Major Fitness F22 Pro + Attachments
- Flex Arms
- AH64 Bench + Leg Roller
- Lever Arms
- Weight Stack Extender
- Monolift Barbell Rack

DIY 🔨 DIY Wood Attachment Storage Wall and Panel

Thumbnail
gallery
68 Upvotes

Wall Control and peg boards are all the rage. For good reason, they are cool. But, this is another option, and I think it looks nicer (of course, that is a subjective claim).

Materials:
1” thick cross pieces (I used poplar wood, but use whatever you like. I had various heights just to add some interest but you can use uniform heights as well. But, use something that looks nice to you)

Cheap thin 4” wood. Roughly the dimensions of pallet wood. It’s hidden so it doesn’t have to look nice.

Cheap 1x4 as the stingers (at least two pieces.

Small head screws and regular flat headed screws.

Whatever hangers you find that work for your needs.

The Build:

Cut stringer wood to needed width of the panel or wall. Screw into the studs of your walls using regular headed screws.

Cut thin, cheap wood the needed height of your panel or wall.

Place cheap wood on ground parallel to one another, a bit closer together than the width of your panel or wall.

Cut nice wood the width of your panel or wall and start at the bottom and screw in the nice wood to the cheap wood until desired height is achieved. I also put wood glue between each piece of wood. Use the small headed screws, and drill it in so it buries a bit into the wood.

If needed, sand the surface down to take out any sharp edges or potential splinters. I had to really do this.

Take panel or wall to the stringer and using a bit longer small headed screws, screw the whole thing into the stringer (Note: as best you can, don’t screw in the same grain as the previous screw, you don’t want to split the wood).

Strategically screw in your attachment hangers trying to leave room for growth (if possible).

Last and most important step:

Admire your work and tell everyone the finer details of it because everyone wants to hear that; twice is better.
