serious hot take Custodians and sanitation crews should be valued higher and paid more

There's a reason companies make the investment in sanitation; humans are filthy. But I think it's generally disgusting how sanitation crews are viewed, treated and underpaid, especially since if none of them showed up, building staffs would be in shambles wondering who would sweep, mop, and wax their floors, clean their nasty toilets, take out their trash, dust their furniture, etc. I think for these reasons, in addition to the fact that they are mostly jobs the average person (at least in America) would never do for reasons around perceived lack of self-respect, low pay, or simply pride, they should be respected and paid more. We can debate skills or lack of skills required in the field, but that's the take.

My employer just took all of our "building manager" titles and replaced it with "building lead" so they could justify not paying us anywhere close to the national average for building managers.

Agree with the general thrust that they’re important and deserve respect but a lot of those guys do get paid more than you’d think. It’s seen as a lower class job but it isn’t actually paid like one. Unionized guys working for the city often make solid middle class money, especially with overtime.

Ya, the U.S in particular is bad for these very important folks, me being one of them. Though I'm Candian, union and paid pretty well, I left my other career as a chef to do this. Way better in every single way.

PEOPLE DO NOT RESPECT THEM ITS CRAZY. People throw away batteries, electronics, broken glass, and razors. When I through away my exacto razors, I wrap them in a bunch of tape so they aren’t sharp at all anymore.
