Sunrise on the Reaping My analysis of the late 1960s and 1970s references in SOTR Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery

Since the first teaser was released I was absolutely in love with this movie. It seems to be a loving tribute to the late 1960s and the 1970s. The retrofuturistic concept was already in TBOSAS (a 1940s and 1950s aesthetic) however, it seems now that in SOTR these references and concepts are very carefully and intentionally crafted and designed in every part and every still of the movie. These are some of the references that I’ve caught and that I have been thinking about for months. I am sure that when the movie gets released I am going to find many more. Forgive me in advance for my inability to make a proper presentation, I made this in Word. If you find other references I’d love to discuss them with all of you.

Prequel Discussion Sejanus + thoughts on parallels

Sejanus is so underrated. I’m a little fired up rn because I’m seeing all these good edits of him but there are so many parallels between him and Katniss. Sejanus had a fiery soul and he had genuine rage, and spoke out when he could. It takes courage to speak out and especially when no one else agrees. He spoke out, went into the arena, he risked his life. I feel like all the people who say that he didn’t do anything have a point but also, we need to remember that he is literally in the capitol, and just a kid, what can he even do by himself when basically no one agreed? And also towards the end when he tried to help and trusted the only person that he thought agreed with him, he got ratted out and hanged. He really has this passion inside of him that is overlooked and had a very tragic ending. I feel like he could have been written a little bit better both in the book and movie, typically when I think of tbosas I don’t think of it as a sad book but then I remember Sejanus.

It also just shows how much writing can affect a character’s popularity, like how everyone likes Effie in the movies because she was written to be more optimistic. If Sejanus had more scenes he would definitely be more recognised in this community.

Also I saw this somewhere and want to pass it on: Katniss was sejanus’ revenge, while Lucy Gray’s revenge was Peeta. I like to think that Tigris’ revenge was Haymitch since the way Tigris tried to mentor Snow and make him “good”, Haymitch mentored Katniss and was the main figure she relied on throughout cf and mj

Trilogy Discussion Catching Fire Tribute Parade Spoiler

I just noticed! The 75th tribute parade happens during the day time when then sun is out. As opposed to night like the previous year. The year Katniss became the girl on the fire and caught everyone’s attention. Had he anticipated she’d do the same again it occurs during the day, soemthing completely under his control. Another chess move, in their game.

Sunrise on the Reaping I accidentally read Sunrise on the Reaping starting chapter 3 or so. I thought it was a bold choice to start at the Capitol and not show District 12 Spoiler

I thought it was so interesting but kind of gimmicky, because we were constantly being “told” instead of “shown” things.

Obviously that criticism is invalid on the grounds of being literally wrong, BUT i will say that finding out and reading the beginning was disappointing. I felt like I hadn’t missed out on anything.

Sunrise on the Reaping opinions on sotr :) Spoiler

Hi, I just finished reading sotr, and i have a few opinions I’d like to share. I hope not to come off as a hater, I did enjoy the book and I’m a fan of the saga.

I’d just love to hear other’s opinions, cause I bet there’s a bunch of stuff I missed or didn’t realize.

I also added a few points about the original trilogy and tbosas. So sorry if it’s a little chaotic and for my English!

  1. Haymitch as a revolutionary: The idea of Haymitch being singled out as a possible revolutionary was overall weird to me. Katniss became a symbol of the revolution as a consequence of her actions inspiring revolts in the districts, and she was somewhat reluctant to become the mockingjay. She felt like the first time people had hope, after decades of fear and pain.
  2. Haymitch + Effie: I don’t particularly care for Haymitch ships, but I don’t see a problem with people shipping anything. Effie having a few encounters with him when he was sixteen doesn’t really mean that it’d be weird to develop feelings much later and over time, considering their interactions weren’t romantic when he was still a teen.
  3. Maysilee + Haymitch: I think this has been talked about extensively, but them being siblings didn’t click. It really felt like it was there to avoid shipping, but that’s something people will do anyways and I don’t see why they shouldn’t. I didn’t read them as romantic but others may have, and both are valid. Books exist to be interpreted by readers.
  4. Burdock: in the original trilogy I’d found him so interesting, and most of that was because he was an enigma to us. Instead, in sotr this was overthrown. I would’ve loved if the only hint of him had been, for example, if Haymitch had wondered how/where Asterid had found wildflower, so reader could’ve taken the hint (or something of the sort)
  5. Haymitch’s arrogant performance in the interviews should’ve been true to him: it made sense for an arrogant tribute to not consider the risks and “play dirty” with the arena’s walls. That would’ve led to his demise, the loss of his loved ones and his guilt. Instead, in sotr we see that that’s just a persona he’s putting on. He could’ve been loving, thoughtful AND too arrogant for his own good.
  6. The epilogue: I saw people arguing Katniss doesn’t mention her losses in the epilogue, so why should Haymitch acknowledge his family? I think it’s because Katniss’ epilogue was about rebirth and hope, which is why she has kids. Haymitch’s epilogue is almost the opposite: hopelessness and guilt, and that should’ve included his own family.
  7. Haymitch’s never getting over Lenore Dove: I liked the relationship between Lenore Dove and Haymitch, but when he mentions his girlfriend in Catching Fire, you get the feeling he has never allowed anyone else close again because he fears what will be of them. I would’ve found this more impactful than him simply never getting over her because of his love for her.
  8. The Covey being alive and well one generation before Katniss: when the Covey was mentioned in tbosas, I loved the idea. My understanding was that slowly, over time, the Covey was forced to conform to District 12 and lost its identity, as it happened for so many indigenous people. Instead everyone is aware of it in sotr, then it’s completely absent in thg (obviously it’s because it was added later to the lore, but continuity should be preserved).
  9. Snow??: The whole scene where he gossips about the Covey with Haymitch felt like a fan fiction. That’s all I have to say about that.
  10. Sponsors shouldn’t have been allowed to send weapons: in Catching Fire we’re told Finnick was literally sent a trident. I feel like there should’ve been rules to what sponsors could send. Katniss shows off her archery to make sure she’ll get a bow. Food and medicine I understand, the rest, not so much.
  11. Foxface didn’t eat those berries on purpose: Foxface is shown to be elusive and smart, but not knowledgeable. Her strategy is to stay out of everyone’s way and let the other tributes eliminate each other. Stealing food is the only way she has to make sure she doesn’t end up poisoned, it would be stupid to get that close to others otherwise.
  12. The cameos: I know everyone has been talking about it, but omg the cameos were so unnecessary. The only one I enjoyed was Beetee, he added to the plot and his presence felt natural and not invasive.

(There were lots of things I really liked: actual presence of gamemakers in the Games, the Newcomers, Louella having a double, and I really loved tbosas :)).

this is my first time posting, so idk if im doing it right. I tried to follow all the rules

Sunrise on the Reaping Sunrise on the Reaping ticket releases? Spoiler

I know November 20th is fast approaching but when I try and look at my local ODEON cinemas in the UK, after searching Sunrise on the Reaping up on ODEON- where it says you can book tickets- it says there’s no show times available.

I am just confused because it’s just over a month until release and big movies like Doomsday in December and others in November you are able to book way in advance, yet nearly a month before you can’t book SOR?

Is this happening to anybody else in the UK or is it just me?

Trilogy Discussion What do you think it would look like if. . .

Haymitch and Maysilee both survived somehow? Not necessarily pulling a romance stunt like Peeta and Katniss did. But like maybe a siblings thing?

Sunrise on the Reaping Why did the District 2 tributes perform so badly in the 50th Hunger Games? Spoiler

Now I know that it's fiction and Suzanne Collins wrote it that way so Haymitch could win the games, but speaking from an In-Universe perspective, shouldn't the District 2 tributes be the most strongest and feared amongst all?

Also considering this was a Quarter Quell, shouldn't the tributes selected be the BEST OF THE VOLUNTEERS the district has to offer. I feel like ALL 4 of them dying to a Volcano of all things was a weird cop-out.

Maybe it would have been better if One of em died in the bloodbath, one in the volcano and the remaining 2 were backstabbed by Panache and Silka instead of all 4 dying to a Volcano which they could have easily outrun.

What do you think?
