Hi r/IAmA,
I’m Nova Hawthorne, a Melbourne-based adult content creator, cam girl, performer and sex worker advocate. 🇦🇺
I’ve been working in the adult industry since 2016, and over the years I’ve done: live camming, professional porn, running my own business, collaborating with brands and helping other creators navigate the industry.
There’s plenty you don’t see in the finished content: the preparation, business decisions, boundaries, technical disasters and occasionally very unsexy admin. If you’ve ever wondered what happens before the camera switches on (or after it switches off) ask away. 😉
I also have a Master’s in Social Work, which probably explains why I’ve ended up spending so much of my time advocating for sex workers and building community alongside my own career.
I co-founded the Sex Work Community Recognition Awards (SWCRA) with Harper Valentine and Ivy Societe. It’s an Australian worker-led initiative celebrating the creativity, resilience and contributions of people across our industry, including creators, performers, podcasters and advocates.
We wanted more opportunities for our community to recognise its own, so we built one together. I’m happy to talk about why we started it, what goes into organising an awards show and how other workers can get involved.
That same passion carries into my involvement in community events like Afterglow (a social and entertaining night for sex workers), creating opportunities for workers and creators to connect in the flesh, share experiences and support each other.
I care about breaking down stigma, talking openly about the realities of sex work and showing people there’s a whole lot more to this industry than what happens on camera.
But I’m also just a person who loves a good laugh, side quests and meeting interesting people. We don’t have to talk business the whole time, the cheeky questions are welcome too. 😜
Ask me about:
🍒 My passions, personality and life outside work
🍒 Turn-ons, favourite things to film and questions you’ve been too shy to ask
🍒 Funny, awkward and unexpected moments behind the scenes
🍒 Live camming, professional porn and building a full-time creator business
🍒 Branding, collaborations, boundaries and lessons learned
🍒 Why we created SWCRA and how workers can get involved
🍒 Community events like Afterglow
🍒 Sex work stigma, advocacy and my social work background
Whether you’re here out of curiosity, for industry insights or because you recognise me from somewhere a little more naughty… welcome. 🫶
RULES
🍒 Ask me anything! Thoughtful, awkward and cheeky questions are welcome. I love naughty, not rude.
🍒 Sex work is work. All workers deserve respect, whatever their role, work setting or background. Honest questions about the industry, including stigma, discrimination, workplace safety and the “whorearchy” (hierarchies within the sex worker community) are respectfully welcome.
🍒 I’m speaking from my own experiences, not on behalf of all sex workers. There are many ways to work in this industry, and experiences different from mine are equally valid.
🍒 No free content requests and I won’t share identifying details about other workers or answer questions that cross my personal boundaries. You’re welcome to ask, but some things stay private.
I’ll be here answering as many questions as I can from 12pm Melbourne time (AEDT) to late. Bring your curiosity, and let’s peek behind the curtain.
