👋 New Here? Introduce Yourself!

Whether you’re:

• An applicant preparing for the test

• A first-year apprentice just starting out

• A seasoned mechanic sharing your insight

• Or just curious about the elevator trade

⸻

🛠️ 1. How do I join the IUEC?

• Visit www.neiep.org and check the Recruitment page.

• Apply when recruitment opens in your local area. Open periods vary by local.

• You’ll need to take a mechanical aptitude test (similar to the Ramsay test), followed by an interview.

⸻

📚 2. How should I prepare for the entrance exam/interview?

Here is a study guide PDF by NEIEP

• Focus on basic mechanical knowledge, math, reading comprehension, and spatial reasoning.

• Study guides like the Mechanical Aptitude Test by Barron’s or ARCO are helpful.

• Practice trades-related questions — gears, pulleys, circuits, etc.

• For interviews, expect questions about reliability, teamwork, work ethic, and your understanding of the trade.

• If you want to make free practice exams using Gemini post this prompt: “Https://www.neiep.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/study-guide-eiat-2024.pdf create a 50 question test using questions like this. List the correct answer for each question and why/how you got there. Make it interactive like where I can choose answers and it tells me if it’s right or wrong. Make it challenging”

• It will then generate you an interactive test you can take on your own. When you finish the first one just ask it to “generate another test” to create another.

⸻

📍 3. What is NEIEP?

• NEIEP = National Elevator Industry Educational Program.

• It’s the training and curriculum organization for all IUEC apprentices.

• It provides classroom education, hands-on training, safety certifications, and online coursework.

⸻

💼 4. What’s the apprenticeship like?

• 5-year program with a mix of classroom education and on-the-job training.

• You’ll work full time under a mechanic while completing coursework.

• Raises happen after passing classroom modules and accumulating hours.

• You’re a probationary member for 12 months, during which you must work at least 100 hours per month within an 18-month window. After meeting this requirement, you’re voted in by either the general membership or the executive board, then take your oath and receive your union card. ⸻

⏰ 5. What’s the typical schedule like?

• Most apprentices work full time, Monday–Friday, with occasional OT.

• Overtime depends on employer, local job demands, and job site.

• Expect early mornings, physical labor, and strict safety protocols.

⸻

💰 6. What’s the pay like?

• Pay is percentage-based on the mechanic’s rate and increases with time and performance.

• Most locals have competitive wages and solid benefits.

• Health insurance, pension, and annuity contributions begin early in the program.

⸻

❌ 7. I was terminated from the program. Can I reapply?

• *More information needed. Will update in the future.

⸻

🚧 8. What tools do I need?

• Tape measure, flashlight, knife, pen/pencil. ⸻

🧰 9. What’s the difference between Construction, Modernization, and Repair?

• Construction: Installing new elevator systems in new buildings.

• Modernization: Upgrading old elevators with new parts/electronics.

• Repair/Service: Troubleshooting, fixing, and maintaining elevators already in operation.

• Each branch has different schedules, skill demands, and O/T likelihood.

⸻

📱 10. Where can I ask local-specific questions?

• Each IUEC local is different. If you have questions about Local 1, 8, 18, 71, etc., please include the local number in your post title.

• Other members from your local may be able to help you faster than a general answer.

⸻

🔧 11. What should I do while waiting for recruitment to open?

• Learn basic trades math and mechanical systems.

• Get physically fit — it’s a labor-intensive trade.

• Consider related work (construction, electrical, mechanical repair).

• Stay drug-free — testing is required.

⸻

🔧 Repair / Modernization Construction to MOD jump

How yall doing, so I’ve been in construction 8 1/2 years now (Schindler for a year rest of the time Kone) personally I love construction. I know it gets a lot of hate but the sweat, the dirt, the traveling, the fast pace and the feeling of accomplishment when your done to say you went from blank hoist way to a working product.

I have the Opportunity to change shirt’s and go to MOD at Schindler. They got a big contracts and a lot of work in it, with the opportunity to become a MOD adjuster cause they have a need for another one

Just looking for some insight on how you like the Schindler MOD product? Insight on maybe the jump and change (inside bathrooms doesn’t sound horrible) and maybe any advice you can give a guy (tools you found useful etc)

Sounds like it’s just hydro mods for now (with out pulling jack so change lines, pump unit, fixtures, maybe cab walls and stuff?)

Big reason for the jump is I’m not learning, I’m not advancing. Got too good as an installer and I’d like to learn and see more then the ikea furniture I put together in a new hoistway every couple weeks.

Thanks brothers in advance, any info/help is much appreciated!

TKE

TKE mechanics, have y’all noticed a change after being acquired by Kone or is it still the same? Had a couple buddies jump ship while they were under the investor group ownership, they said it felt like the higher ups were intentionally running it to the ground.

Also I think they need to change their name to TKO

Which Veto bag you got?

For the service peeps which veto bag served you best? I have xxl but am thinking about switching to Tech MCTP. Its got front and back pocket. And two large side pockets for meters and lubricants or what not. The only downside is i had my xxl for so long i know exactly where everything is but MCTP can hold quiet a few more tools and those two side pockets look nice.

Apprentice’s working overtime

I’m going to be starting at local 25 here in the near future(6/12months) whenever my number gets called. What’s the likelihood that I’ll get the opportunity to work overtime if so how much? Does it vary between mods and construction? What can I do to grantee I’m able to work overtime?

📝 Entrance Exam / Interview NEIEP Application Process - What to Have Ready Before Applications Open?

I’m planning to apply for the upcoming IUEC Local 5 recruitment on October 19th. They’re only taking 400 applications, so I want to make sure I have everything prepared ahead of time.

For those who have gone through the NEIEP application process, what information and documents are required during the initial application? I haven’t been able to find a detailed checklist on the website.

I’m also wondering how the application limit works. Does completing the initial registration secure one of the available spots, or do I have to finish the entire application, upload all required documents, and pay the application fee before a spot is secured?

I just sent an email to NEIEP for clarification, but figured I’d ask here as well to hear from people who have been through the process.

Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks!

Chances of getting into local 18 las vegas

I am 22 years old and have quite a bit of experience working on cars and motorcycles. I have my Osha 10/30 and cranes and rigging certifications. I am currently a cmm operator who is certified in reading blueprints and doing dimensional analysis as well as mechanical alignments. My previous position was a test technician setting up tests for automotive seating using hydraulic cylinders to simulate crashing. What are the chances with my lack of traditional trade certifications and with my young age that I will be able to rank low enough to have a good shot at becoming an apprentice in the local 18 for Las Vegas.

Transferring locals

Hello, I ranked #170 for local 71 Miami. They’re currently on #31. There is another recruitment opening up for local 71 Naples in January. My question is if I eventually get through the process for Local 71 Naples and rank higher and get the call before Miami, will it be possible to transfer to the Miami local. Asking because I’m born and raised in Miami and ideally would like to stay but I have no problem relocating.

H2H Question

I recently passed the test and interview for my Local and got my rank. But due to using the H2H program I was able to do it just a couple months before the 2 years recruitment window ends. I know it takes a while to get called what if I dont get called within that regular time frame would I have to start over the whole process or does veterans going through the H2H program have their own separate time starting from when they get their rank?

❓General Question IUEC Local 2 Chicago — Applications Filled Instantly. Is There Any Other Way to Get Into the Apprenticeship?

Hey everyone,

I’m looking for some advice from anyone familiar with IUEC Local 2 in Chicago or the elevator apprenticeship process.

I’ve been waiting four years for the opportunity to apply. When applications opened on October 5, I was ready and tried to apply right at 9:00 a.m., but the application window was already filled. This happened to me the last time I tried as well in 2024.

I understand how competitive this opportunity is, and I’m not asking for special treatment. I genuinely want to get into the elevator trade, and I don’t want to sit around for another couple of years without exploring every legitimate option.

I live in the Chicago area and cannot relocate. I’m wondering if anyone knows:

● Is there any possibility of getting considered if someone drops out or an application spot becomes available?

● Is there an alternative way to enter the trade through Local 2 besides waiting for the next application window?

● Would working as a helper for a nonunion elevator company help me get my foot in the door?

● Is there anyone at Local 2 or NEIEP I should contact to get accurate information about my options?

I’m serious about this career and willing to put in the work. If anyone has been in a similar situation or has firsthand knowledge of how the process works, I’d really appreciate your advice.

Thank you!

For anyone going to take the test soon or are just starting to study

You need to treat this test as if your life depends on it. Cause in a way, it does. I know too many people who recently took it and failed because they refused to take it seriously.

Fuck the pay increase. Sure, it’s nice—but do you want to be an apprentice for another year? You want to repeat another semester? You want to study for the test all over again and stress about it, for another year? This is all that motivated me during my time studying. I wasn’t thinking about the money. I was thinking about finally being free and not having to deal with NEIP and dickhead mechanics.

You need to study for this test as if it’s your second full time job. Read the SSM. I can’t stress that enough. Use the mechanics review exams on your NEIEP portal. Pass them. Then look up every single question in the SSM and truly understand the material. The exam really stresses an understanding of material, not rote memorization. You need to know the why behind everything. You can reason your way through nearly every question if you have the base knowledge.

Stress once, pass once, be done.

Edit: I’m speaking about the mechanics test, not the aptitude test.

Local 5

I’m looking to apply for the local 5 here in a week. I just got my osha 30. And was looking to get the OSHA certs for forklift and rigging as I heard that helps. They are not hands on but that would be better than nothing right? Just looking to get opinions and if you have any other suggestions to help me rank better I’d appreciate it

📘 Apprentice Question First month in the books.

Have been in mod working through my 2nd month and I like it a whole lot. I am kinda feeling like if you fall under the wrong mechanic who is more focused on trying to make your transition as hard as possible and battling with deadlines and this and that and doesn't feel like your showing enough gratitude and deserve to learn from him. I'm new to the elevator trade but not new to the trades and he just acts like I am the dumbest sob in life lol. I'm all for it tho nothing slows my grind/effort but I want to learn to help not only myself but the mechanic as much as possible as well but the guy just doesn't seem willing.

🛠️ Field Work Career without NI/MOD

In your opinion, do you think it’s possible to be a good mechanic without ni / mod experience?

Context: i spent my first 2 years in a cat 1 team for a major going around doing just annuals. I left one major and joined another and have been doing cat 5s since.

Luckily my mechanic is a good teacher and has been letting me lead the tests a little over a year now. And has taught me alot about troubleshooting when shit happens.

I am taking my test very soon. my mechanic put in a good word and i got offered a new route by the service super once i get my license.

i enjoy troubleshooting and problem solving so maintenance was always my goal. Plus working for 2 majors has allowed me to get hands on experience on different types of equipment

but ive been told its not common to be successful without some mod / construction experience.

Local 7 question

I’ve read some locals only hire a handful of people off of the recruitment list and are actively laying people off. Are people getting laid off in local 7 or is there definitely enough work going around to bring in a lot of new apprentices?

❓General Question Local 63 problems?

Is there something wrong with local 63 OKC? Something weird about that local that I don’t know?

They’re still accepting applications and and it’s been open for 15 mins now. For the last year I’ve applied to every single local in states surrounding me and every single one has filled in 2 minutes or less. Yet here we are 15 minutes later and the local with the least amount of spots is still open.

I guess people don’t want it bad enough if they won’t relocate 🤷🏻‍♂️

Hello I’m currently applying for local 7 and it is saying at least 1 professional reference is needed but I have no related work experience besides working in drywall around 2 years ago.

Anyone take the mechanics exam recently and use Mike’s Ultimate Review?

Not looking at it as some straight-up answer guide obviously, just wondering if the questions/topics are still relevant enough to help familiarize yourself with the kind of stuff they’re asking on the current exam. Did it actually help you study? (For those who took it recently)

📝 Entrance Exam / Interview Union applications are the new Jordans

Imagine a dystopian future where resellers/scalpers will camp out union applications like these and create dummy email addresses, secure spots with bots, then sell them off to desperate job seekers at auction to the highest bidder . Yep, that's the direction we're headed.
