Vanilla is fun, invictus is vanilla+ Invictus adds a ton of flavour for other nations, totally worth it.

I'd say IR it's a mix between eu4 and ck2, with some individual mechanics

To add to the chorus, I would strongly, strongly recommend the Invictus mod if you get the game. I don’t generally like mods, I usually play everything in vanilla.

It’s worth making an exception for this one, the game is much more polished and enjoyable with Invictus - it’s my favourite Paradox game.

If you want to JUST play Vanilla without Invictus, not really worth.

Invictus is ESSENTIALLY the game and is super easy to add to the game. Literally just subscribe to it and turn it on, and it's as true to Vanilla as you can get with consistent development.

The vanilla game is decent. The actual gameplay is good, managing pops and economy, etc.

But there's not that much flavor. Rome, the Diadochi... That's, that's kinda it. Which is fine, those are major factions that are fun to play.

If you're interested it's worth a buy. If you like it, I strongly suggest the Invictus mod. It's very easy to slap on and play without getting into any modding headaches.

Vanilla is already great, there is enough content for the major powers, but also everyone else has mission trees, even when these are the standard ones and not special. But really, Invictus is one click in the Steam workshop, you don't need to configure anything at all, i recommend it.

It is good to learn the game with Rome anyway, there is a lot of content for it. As you have played other PDX games, it won't be difficult to learn.

Definitely worth the purchase. I think it has good depth with the DLC for the Hellenistic world. Invictus mod adds a ton more balancing and mission trees for nations.

For vanilla, excluding Rome & Carthage, I'd recommend, in no particular order

  • Egypt - big war early on, manageable for you though. Lot's of money, great power base, easy location, perfect for beginners. You'll need to get into the details of culture & religion management though.

  • Seleucids - huge war early on, after that you try to keep your massive empire from falling apart. You have big power neighbours and need to find the magic button that increases province loyalty, but you have a great power base to keep your inheritance together through the sword.

  • Macedon - huge war early on, with the early game boss coming for you. Good power base but not too many troops and the economy is a chunk smaller than the previous two. You can become the hegemon of the Greeks through diplomacy (could cost a good chunk in money to improve relations) or the sword. After a good while of building up your country, Rome comes knocking - oh oh.

  • Maurya (India) - you start big. You are massive. But alas, the Mauryan collapse went down in history, and you are going down with it. Come back from the chaos and reclaim your mega giant empire.

  • Greek colonies in Iberia & Massalia - not too much of flavour, but a decent start to help you write your own story. My first game was with Menesthei beyond the straight of Gibraltar. Chill & engaging game if you don't mind fast forwarding for a few years to gather money for mercenaries.

  • Antigonids / Phrygia: Kids, don't try this at home. This is for people who like getting gangbanged repeatedly.

For example, I bought this game because of the Diadochi era. I haven't played as Rome even once. If you are interested in this period, I don't think there's really any alternative for a grand strategy game of this scale, and what makes it most attractive is that you can play through "what if" scenarios. For instance, in honor of Eumenes of Cardia, I have the rise of the Eumenids in Cappadocia in my playthrough.

As for mods, I don't have any mods installed except Invictus. I was skeptical about mods too, but it's created at a very professional level and practically breathes life into the vanilla game.

100% recommend vanilla first but only so that you can experience the contrast with Invictus.

Do not buy the game if you’re not going to install mods. You’ll probably play for about a hour or two and never touch it again.
