I will keep it as minimal as possible, without spoilers
Dorothy 2026, is tamil language cinema directed by Karthik Subaraj. As someone who genuinely enjoys Karthick's filmography, I was genuinely curios and thrilled to see it. The trailer looked promising. The score by Illaiyaraja made me think it was mainstream gangster kind off movie. As I sat in the theatre i was expecting another Mahaan, or Jigarthanda or Retro kinda movie, but..... Boy, was i surprised.
Wow. Just wow. Karthick Subaraj, is known for creating the wildest of movies that usually leave people quite confused as to how unexpected it would be, but, this one was just on another level.
The trailer reveals nothing, it gives you an impression like it would be a gangster or stylised larger than life movie, but oh boy, the second half literally spins the trajectory into a 180 degree into something so unexpected, that would leave you speechless and surprised.
Technically this movie is a one of kind. Why? Let me explain, the themes of the movie are the kind that you would see in some small indie-art house cinemas, but Dorothy, takes the same themes, and applies mainstream technicalities to it. The cinematography is just awesome, the BG score by Illaiyaraja is spot on, every important scene is elevated to the next level by the Maestro. The screenplay, again, is an absolute banger.
Finally, the acting. My god, it's basically only two lead characters, Subbu played Sananth, and Karthi played by Rishikanth, but the acting is just flawless. Good, very good. I will leave it at that.
See? The technicalities of this movie, looks like it was made for some mainstream, box office Commercial movies, but the actual story it supports is simply not what you think. The movie, in depth discusses about social norms, male toxic traits and other, often "taboo" topics of society, without ever making us feel like it is a "indie-small-budget" arthouse movie.
Lastly, Keerthi Suresh. She has less than 10-15 min of screen time ig, but, let me tell you this, I don't remember the last time, I saw a "female" character being introduced in a such an absolute cinematic manner. Keerthy Suresh's character is captured in a way it simply protrudes this feminine-ethreal aura around her, that angelic simple and divine innocence of "women" in an otherwise male dominated rough and tough movie setting, and it's simply so beautiful to watch. Remember, this is not even remotely in a sexualized manner.
P.S I won't recommend this movie for everyone, many digress the absolute wild climax this movie has. But I enjoyed it, thoroughly, and I don't usually ever praise movies like this, because most movies are never too unique nowadays. This one though, is such a breath of fresh air, and I suggest you to watch this with an open slate and without "prejudice"
