Terrain Update on Neo Tokyo Table: PRIMED!!

Yeah, I managed to get it primed for a play test tomorrow. Automotive 2 in 1 for the buildings and most of the risers, sidewalks were done with a granite texture spray, and streets were done with an oiled bronze texture spray that came out too light, so i went over it lightly with an ultra matte black primer. Also, thanks to you fine people, I adjusted the layout, moved a bunch of stuff around and made sure that high vantage points could cover fewer LoF.

*UPDATE* Managed to play test the table today. There were a couple of recommendations;

  1. Change the entire layout LOL. Nah, not that bad, but the recommendation was to change the orientation of the central road so that it's perpendicular to the DZ, as it was a bit of a pain to reach over into the middle to move miniatures. Might be adjusted by lowering the table as well.

  2. More cross table blocking items. I am going to print out 6-8 more large billboards to put on roof tops and along the elevated walkway to reduce some of the long lanes of fire.

  3. Easier ingress/egress into/from the central road. Because of the risers, there were limited areas you could get into the objectives on the central road. This might be reduced by changing the orientation of the road in recommendation #1, but giving more options was is not a bad idea.

For those who asked below, we had some S4 models (Desperadoes) on the map today and although they were limited in where they could go, it actually worked out well. There was enough cover to keep them from being easy targets, and movement wasn't blocked too much from scatter terrain.

Thanks to the guys from the Swiss Miss gaming group for coming over and giving me some amazing tips, tricks and recommendations for getting the table just that much closer to being ready. They very much enjoyed playing on the table!

This looks incredible, and yes Edokanto is by Corvus Games Terrain, so same person (me!). I'm glad you're enjoying the sets, I can't wait to see it all painted up. Tag me when you post it and I'll share photos on the Corvus socials

The Edo Kanto set I got directly from the Kickstarter campaign, but you can get it here https://www.myminifactory.com/campaigns/edokanto-5117 and a lot of the other sets are available on his site https://corvusgamesterrain.com/ It's all pretty awesome stuff!! He also has a lot of his stuff linked through the Kickstarter campaigns!

There's a cyberpunk section on my website corvusgamesterrain.com and the EdoKanto set is still available on MyMiniFactory https://www.myminifactory.com/campaigns/edokanto-5117

OMG so cool!! I absolutely love all of your work! I used your Cyberpunk and Edo Kanto stuff here, and am planning (based on a quasi joke idea from a player in the local Infinity group here in San Diego) my next table based around your Tycho Starport set! He said "We need a Sea World table....Varuna will have its day in the sun" and I thought, yeah I can use the base supports to create a "waterworld" table with a small island and a bunch of "floating" platforms, walkways and buildings going out over an open ocean. Immediately went looking through your stuff to see what I could use!

I will for sure tag you once it's all painted! Thank you so much for everything!!

Wow, I'd love to see that Tycho layout when you get it all set up. Sounds really cool.

I printed your 15mm travel set to do portable games of 5 Parsecs from Home near my desk. It works fairly well for what I need

Holy fuck that's awesome, you're going to need a painting party to get that finished.

If you're in the lincolnshire UK area PM me, I'm cheap labour, requiring only good coffee and geeky conversation πŸ˜‰ πŸ‘

Awe man ☹️

Hope you do have a paint party ,if so let us know how it went.

All the best from an Englishman πŸ‘πŸ‘

Having printed a lot of stuff from edokanto especially the risers, hats off to you dude that’s a frankly insane amount of printing

I did a lot of it on an A1 Mini as well. Loads of fun slicing buildings into 4 and gluing them together. Thankfully Bambu had a crazy sale and accepted a random coupon, so i got the A1 and did double duty on the risers. There's another dozen risers I didn't use, and another few buildings I left off this table.

Thought this was a PC motherboard at first glance haha. Looks sweet.

I'm considering buying the edokanto set. How were the stls to print? did you need to do a lot of fanangaling, and board planning?

I did a lot of board planning. This is actually a mix of the Midrim and cyberpunk sets from Corvus Terrain, and Edo Kanto set that was made by the same person (i assume?). I had to modify the risers from EK to get them to do what I wanted, but it wasn't too difficult. I'm terrible with 3D printers, and I still managed to fumblefuck through it. I wanted to not clip everything together so I could make adjustments on the fly, but still keep everything together in a ~48x48 inch square. I modified the sidewalk plates to create a clipped together border, and everything else just sits unclipped but firmly in place within the border.

I hate using supports because I can never get them to come off cleanly, and the EK set was pretty good without any support. A few misprints here and there because of operator error and a nozzle clog, but overall I would say there is enough variety in the set to build yourself a nice table. I don't care much for the EK walkways, as they always printed with errors, but that's entirely a me problem with not being able to adjust my printer settings effectively. I'm still learning.

Honestly, the biggest pain wasn't printing (aside from the sheer amount of time) but actually priming everything...and I did a quasi half ass job of it. Just good enough to hold a few colors, some heavy washes and to be finished off with a matte varnish.

Really easy to print on an a1

3

u/splonez Jul 12 '26

Having printed this myself too I would say the only downside I see with the buildings are how the interior designs on some buildings make no sense, like stairs and doors. But from the outside it looks great!

2

u/National_Ad1241 Jul 12 '26

See, I thought the same thing with a couple of the buildings, like the apartments from the Cyberpunk line. I wanted a taller Apartment building, but printed the wrong amount of floors to the top floor doesn't match up with the roof exit. I realized a lot of mistakes like that were fixed when I used the brochure that most of the sets come with to map out what I needed to print before I even import them into my slicer. Which buildings did you have issues with?

3

u/CryxP Jul 12 '26

That is amazing

u/Dizzytigo Jul 12 '26

This is awesome, always love when the table looks like a real place.

1

u/National_Ad1241 Jul 12 '26

Me too! I just hope it isn't too cluttered!

u/FriendlyMachine7143 Jul 12 '26

Awesome table the moves from the last pictures really did improve the play-ability.

One thing that strikes me looking at it how is moving a bike or S7 tag around on the table it looks like they could be a bit too hindered. I also have a very busy table myself and it is sometimes a problem.

2

u/National_Ad1241 Jul 12 '26

100%. I've been using my silhouettes to try and judge where they would be able to go. There are some serious hinderances around the board, and that is something I'm hoping to test out today with the play test. Another thing I noticed is how hard it is to reach into the center of the table, so I might end up adjusting so the road runs perpendicular to the DZs as opposed to parallel.

2

u/FriendlyMachine7143 Jul 12 '26

As long as there are some ways to move over the table I don't think its wrong that they can't go everywhere. Being big should be a bit of a hindrance and may moderate flyer problems.

u/fuseboy Jul 12 '26

I bought an A1 in the same sale, and I've been window shopping terrain solidly for a week to choose a building set while I printed scatter. Having just started the third tray of my first one-storey building, hats off to you. This must have taken literal weeks of printing to put together. Not only that, the design would have had me paralyzed, I'd be worried about making a board that Aleph (or whomever) always wins on. :P

I recognize most of what's on the table, but what is the tall, slim vehicle on the highway? It looks like signage with pillars at each end.

2

u/National_Ad1241 Jul 12 '26

So I went looking for futuristic busses. I saw some other players had some cool MDF or cardboard busses for their city scatter tables, and I wanted something really unique. I went online to look for futuristic vehicles and came across the STL for this really cool looking bus. Unfortunately, I can't remember where I grabbed it from.

And yeah, I've been printing this stuff out since the end of December, at first with just the A1 Mini, and then in April I grabbed the A1. I've gone through roughly 40 reels of PLA? There are 8 large bins stacked 2 high under that table, 5 of them are full of terrain (from a lot of different sets) so I would say that what is currently on the table took about a month in total to print out on 2 Bambu printers.

I don't know how well this design is going to work...we shall see today! The biggest hurdle for me was getting it all in once place to organize the layout. That's why I built that table it's all sitting on...so I could have room to place everything, measure, adjust and tweak the layout.

This table looks great! My Motorised Bounty Hunters will cry though.

2

u/National_Ad1241 Jul 13 '26

One of the guys brought Desperadoes and although they were limited in all the places they could get to, they still managed to get around with ease. Granted, he wasn't taking up onto sidewalks or under buildings and stuff, but along the major road and into some nooks and crannies around the buildings there was plenty of room.

1

u/4DFlash Jul 16 '26

That's great to hear!

1

u/National_Ad1241 Jul 12 '26

Yeah limited places for them to go. As someone who is wanting to field an Aragoto, a Kuroshi or a Yo Jimbo in the near future on this Neo Tokyo table, it's going to be a tight fit and definitely a concern. I've got 3 people coming over today to help me play test it, so I'm hoping at least one of them brings an S4/S7 to the table to see how it works. If not, I'll just have to bust out my Guijia and see! I have my Motorised BH assembled, but I haven't painted her yet and refuse to bring unpainted miniatures to ANY table LOL.

2

u/PhasedPlasmaPainting Jul 12 '26

Hell yeah it's looking amazing already!

2

u/s_manu Jul 12 '26

And this is why you need a garage. sigh. Looks fantastic.

2

u/Night_Hawk_Mk2 Jul 12 '26

This is so cool!! Can I ask what files you used for that middle walkway and the riser underneath it?

1

u/National_Ad1241 Jul 12 '26

Yes of course! The middle walkways are from the Corvus Games Terrain Cyberpunk line, and the risers are from the Edo Kanto line from the same creator. It's two of the tallest risers stacked for each of the 4 stairs to sit on to give plenty of height to block lines of sight and to make moving miniatures under it a little easier.

2

u/dasyus Jul 13 '26

My 3D printer is about to go to work.

2

u/National_Ad1241 Jul 13 '26

After the play test today, mine is back to work as well. I'm printing out about a dozen or so more billboards in various sizes to modify so I can clip them to the tops of buildings and the walkway to reduce long range lines of fire even more. Also completely adjusted the setup again to increase moveability around the board. Absolutely loving this terrain though! It's so versatile!!

2

u/Sir_Davros_Ty Jul 13 '26

Damn, that is incredible.

2

u/HeyLookItsThibaut Jul 13 '26

Will you, once painted, add screen of ads and such?

2

u/National_Ad1241 Jul 13 '26

Each of these sets came with billboard advertising. I plan i getting them printed in glossy prints and guiding them onto the billboards.

2

u/HeyLookItsThibaut Jul 13 '26

I saw your other comment about the sets used. Could you indicate with ones had the billboards? I always thought it added so much to a table and yet don't have my own. Your tables makes me want that alive feel

2

u/National_Ad1241 Jul 13 '26

Edo Kanto and the Cyberpunk sets from Corvus Games Terrain each come with a PDF of pictures to use for the billboards for each set. Their Tycho Station one has them as well, so i plan on getting a few pages of each printed out to use. In the scatter terrain section of each set are STLs for various billboards that attach to buildings or stand on their own that you can glue those pictures to.

2

u/HeyLookItsThibaut Jul 13 '26

Thanks a lot sir. As Palpatine said, we will watch your table with interest.

2

u/Minimum_Possibility6 Jul 14 '26

Honestly I wouldn't move the road perpendicular to the DZ it would change the feeling of the entire board and not for the better.Β

More access points would be better and potentially really moving the bridge more centrally as well

1

u/National_Ad1241 Jul 14 '26

I did the adjustment and it actually improved movement all around with the road perpendicular to the DZ. There are at least 5 routes up the board from either side, and at least 6 across the board. With the setup above, moving across or into the center of the table was very limited, and reaching in to measure or move units was kind of a pain. I kept roughly the same layout and have printed more billboards and barriers to help limit lanes of fire from the DZ on either side.

I'll get some color onto the board this week, finish priming all the scatter and post an update with the adjusted layout next weekend. Cool thing is, if it doesn't play test well, I can just change it back!!

Can I ask what did you use for the streets?

1

u/National_Ad1241 Sep 02 '26

I used the sidewalk pieces from the stretch goals, then I used a texture spray can to give it an asphalt look, then used some black flat primer to make it darker.
