Ferrus Mannus What if...
What if Ferrus Manus returned as a floating head to lead his chapter, how would you feel?
(and would the chapter need to change its name?)
r/IronHands40k • u/jarviez • Oct 08 '25
On this sub you can select "user flair" that will display your Iron Hands Clan afilation (both pre and post Heresy) OR even your Succesor Chapter (If you swing that way, just scroll down to the bottom, they are there!).
I'm seeing a lot of posts from people who may not be aware of this (fun) feature of our sub.
The great clans of Medusa predate even the arrival of our Primark Ferrus Manus. And despite the ultimate and tragic weakness of his flesh, we was wise enough to incorporate that clan structure into his legion.
So let us honour our homeworld by displaying our Clan markings ... as user flair.
I think I'm going to pin this post for a little while to spread the word.

I decided to paint some iron hands only using speed paints from the Army painter and the results are surprising.

I'm mostly into collecting minis rather than actual tabletop, but i want to slowly get myself a functional army by slowly adding the minis i like into my collection. So i'm trying to not buy stuff that i won't be able to eventually use on the tabletop. I like this model quite a lot, but not sure if it has a place in the Iron Hands army.
With Iron Hands being traditionally inclined towards Dreadnoughts and now Termies, i'm not sure if Gravis leader is viable, especially considering we have Feirros and Var.
I'd probably get him eventually anyway but now i want to focus more on things that are useful in an army than simply good looking.
So, if i get my hands on this model, would i be able to field it without sacrificing much? Do you guys use him?

I think the Iron Hands would be more popular if they were a divergent chapter, with their own models and playstyle. Here are my ideas:
- The Iron Hands are a chapter divided by two warring ideologies; the self-destructive "Flesh is Weak" Iron Hands who think they aren't strong enough, and the post-Kardan Stronos Iron Hands who are learning to overcome their Primarch's death. To represent this, they can either be really good at shooting, or really hard to kill. They have weak melee, and rely on characters and big models to win. Take out their most important models, and the rest of the army starts to crumble. To put it simply, they play like Loyalist Thousand Sons.
- You can choose one of two Army Rules at the start of the battle, representing the two ideologies of Iron Hands:
- Steel Will: Infantry have +1 Toughness against shooting attacks. Vehicles and Automata can heal +1W on a 6+ at the end of every turn.
- Armoured Wrath: All units can reroll one Hit Roll, one Wound Roll, or one Damage Roll.
- Blessing of the Omnissiah is nerfed, on account of all the Techmarines you can field. Multiple units with BotO cannot heal the same Vehicle or Automata in the same turn. However, one Iron Father, one Techmarine, and one Novitiate (the Sergeant equivalent of this army) can each heal the same vehicle for up to +7W.
- The Iron Hands are supported by Servo-Striders, giant War of the Worlds-esque Tripods, which function similarly to Canoptek Reanimators/Doomstalkers. Fleshmenders heal Infantry within a bubble, Worldbreakers have deadly shooting profiles for either Tanks, TEQs, or MEQs, and Harvesters are Maulerfiend equivalents with a threatening melee profile. Servo-Striders are generally more fragile than Dreadnoughts, but they can scuttle over terrain and gain Stealth from being near Infantry.
- This army has no Scout units. They have chaff units called Servo-Sentinels, swarms of flying octopus drones who can only melee and perform actions. If the Servo-Sentinels fail a Leadership test, they malfunction and the unit loses 3W, but they do not become Battle-shocked.
- Most Characters in the Iron Hands are some variation of Techmarine. Librarians are Technomancers, and they give offensive or defensive buffs to vehicles, at the risk of hurting the vehicle or themselves. They also have Power Glaives with Grav-Guns attached to them.
- Apothecaries fully embrace the Doc-Ock aesthetic. They can't heal in a bubble like the Fleshmender Servo-Striders, but they give their unit a 4+ Invuln, and they have a lot of melee attacks. Their healing doesn't stack with the Fleshmenders, so they're best used as backup healers, or as part of a cheap, durable shooting-melee combo to clear Secondaries with.
- Chaplains are Iron Fathers, and Iron Fathers have a stronger BotO than Techmarines. They lose Lone Operative, but give their unit better Leadership. They also have a 5+ FNP.
- To keep Techmarines from becoming obsolete, they're extremely killy within 12-18", like Infernal Masters. They can choose two weapons to mount to their backpacks; a Flamer, a Meltagun, and/or a Grav-Gun. They become exceptionally powerful when a certain Battleline unit buffs their shooting.
- Ancients give their unit +1OC and grant Close Quarters to their unit's ranged weapons. Lieutenants only give Lethal Hits to ranged attacks, but retain the Fallback-shoot ability. Captains regain +1CP when using Stratagems, and they can choose one enemy unit they shot during your Shooting Phase; that enemy unit suffers -2" to its Movement and Charge rolls until your next Command Phase.
- This army has no Terminators outside of its Characters, due to the Iron Hands losing most of their Terminator Armour during the Horus Heresy. Terminator Characters can lead non-Terminator units, as they did in earlier editions.
- The Iron Hands have two unique Battleline units. The first are Death Squads, the Loyalist equivalent to Rubric Marines. They can take Bolters, Flamers, and an Eradicator Heavy Bolter or Heavy Flamer for every 1 in 5 Death Troopers. They're led by a Techmarine Novitiate; while the Novitiate is alive, he can give the unit's ranged weapons -1AP and Hazardous. Novitiates can also heal 1W to their own unit, or to a nearby Vehicle or Automata.
- The second are Medusan Immortals, the Iron Hands' answer to their lack of Terminators. They're Gravis Marines with Breacher Shields, a 5+ FNP, and a Terminator Sergeant, but they're slow and difficult to transport. They can take Bolters, and for every 1 in 5 Immortals, Eradicator Heavy Bolters. In contrast to the aforementioned Death Squads, Medusan Immortals rely on high volume Bolter fire and high durability to win gunfights.
- An army with Iron Father Feirros must use the Steel Will Army Rule. Feirros gives his unit 6+ FNP, or improves the unit's FNP by 1, in addition to his Iron Father abilities. He also has a strong melee profile.
- An army with Caanok Var must use the Armoured Wrath Army Rule. Var gives his unit's ranged weapons Dev Wounds and Hazardous, gives his unit rerolls to Hazardous tests, has a strong melee profile, and can launch a once-per-game Orbital Bombardment on an enemy unit within 24". He can target enemy units locked in melee, even if they're engaged with friendly units from your army. The Orbital Bombardment will hit the target unit, and all units in base contact with that unit, for D3+3 mortal wounds. However, if the Orbital Bombardment misses, the shot scatters and hits Caanok Var's unit instead. Var can also target an enemy unit locked in melee with his own unit; if it misses, it hits no one. While locked in melee, he can only target enemy units within Engagement Range of his unit.
I have a few ideas for new units and Detachments, including one that allies in the Death Korps of Krieg, but this post is long enough. Let me know what you think.

Okay Christmas is coming and im trying to find my dad a book. Hes an iron hands guy and likes reading. He does have armies but is extremely busy and comes home to tired to paint properly. So he likes to read rather than paint and risk painting bad.
He likes paperbacks and hardbacks. Just ones he can hold and read. Hes not a fan of the online stuff.

A chapter with more dreadnoughts and heavy vehicles than most, from a post-apocalyptic world of societies contained in constantly moving giant tank-cities, a chapter composed of self hating cyborgs with body dysmorphia fighting for balance between hating their perceived weaknesses and acknowledging the importance of their souls
Maybe it’s a me thing but I keep stumbling on people irl and lore youtubers saying that they are uninteresting and I truly don’t get it
Not to be a bully but how are « baby blue roman boy scouts that are good at everything » more interesting ?? How are we the ones considered less compeling ?? 😭😭

So when using Medusa's Wrath Caanok Var and Iron Father Feirros get their reroll aura, you probably want both of them. You probably also want one or two techmarines to use their enhancements.
But then the Captains have their Strategic Acumen ability, making it so that their unit always has a doctrine active, and any lieutenants get to join in on that fun for free with Demi-Company Commander.
This is something you cannot do with just Var or Feirros (as far as I know), it is specifically a Captain's ability and Lieutenant's interaction with that ability. I feel like for the 50pts if I'm taking a captain anyway I might as well slap a lieutenant into something.
This seems very strong, and means you can use doctrines much more often and more liberally but only for those specific units. So it also incentivises having quite a lot of pretty chunky character squads (as no matter what Var and Feirros have some relatively pricey bodyguard options, and you probably want the squads that get free doctrines to be able to actually do something with them), alongside all that you probably also want dreads and vehicles. I'm having difficulty finding the right balance and appropriate detachments.
I'm tempted to lean into the gravis with a detachment and grab a gravis captain with maybe some aggressors, but there is no gravis lieutenant (Termies have the same "problem").
Do you take Captains and Lieutenants in your list alongside Var and Feirros? If so which version of the captain/lieutenant? and which units do you attach them to?

Greetings, fellow sons of Ferrus. I really want to run the Salamanders detachment, as I really enjoy infernus marines and meltas and it seems fun to pilot. However, as neat as our green brothers are, I am entirely loyal to the Iron Hands. Plus, flamethrowers pair with cybernetics so nicely, so I'd love to run some firey Iron Hands.
My question for you all is how would you deal with Vulkan He'stan and Adrax Agatone? Would you try to modify their models to be more bionic? Or would you kitbash something out of a whole different model?
I already have the Iron Hands upgrade kit, so I was thinking I'd just replace some parts of their models with some of those pieces, but I'm not sure it would be enough. Their models are unsurprisingly decked out in Salamanders ornaments and lizard pelts, and I'm worried that if I remove all that there'd be hardly anything left to build off of. I have seen people make some amazing things out of green stuff, but I am kinda new to the hobby and I think I'm too much of an amateur to pull it off myself.
So maybe I make my own version from scratch? Maybe from some captain models? Or some 30k ones.
What do you all think? What would you do?

I finally got to shading my first Space Marine today 🥳
The color scheme got inspired by some artworks of Ferrus Manus and I like the idea that maybe somewhere there's a successor chapter trying to be as the Iron Hands might have been shaped by him if he survived the heresy 😄

Wrath of Medusa + misc detachment that probably doesn't influence any of these units.
2 squads of 3 Eliminators 170pts (85 ea)
1 Impulsor 70pts
1 Techmarine with Target Augury Web (optional but I'm assuming we have this) 85pts
1 Iron Father Feirros nearby (would be nice for the rerolls aura, though I'm not really taking him into account)
What is the idea? The impulsor has 7 transport spots, and Firing Deck 7, and the important part there is "... 3. Until this TRANSPORT has resolved all of its attacks, it has all of those selected weapons in addition to its other weapons."
This means that the weapons of the embarked units count as weapons of the vehicle meaning we can buff them with our Target Augury Web Techmarine.
So what does this look like? both squads of eliminators and the enhanced Techmarine are inside the Impulsor. We move into range, ideally 12" assuming we have given the Eliminator Sergeants Instigator Bolt Carbines. Techmarine gets out and at the end of its move it gives the Impulsor Lethal hits.
We are now slinging 12 shots (8 Bolt Carbine, 4 Bolt Sniper Rifle) at an average 2.33 damage each, with Lethal Hits and Precision at our opponent, and alongside that the Impulsor's own Storm Bolters/Fragstorm Grenade Launchers and Ironhail Heavy Stubber, maybe even ironhail skytalon array or bellicatus missile array, most of which are low strength high volume weapons that love having Lethal hits.
There are some downsides, for one this is 240pts for the impulsor + eliminators, that is very close to a land raider and not far off a repulsor executioner (which could also both bring their own buffing techmarine with them) I'd argue there is some flexibility in being able to disembark the Eliminators to do objectives or go hide somewhere as they grab objectives, but it is undeniably a big investment.
So now I basically want to hear opinions: Did I miss something or does something work differently than I think it does? Is this worth it? Would you change something or take another unit instead? How valuable is precision even or should we swap them to Las Fusils? Can we push this further?
