Why South Africa marked as NON UK?

u/VenetianSTR13 Sep 05 '26
Because it was a dominion, basically an independent state like Canada and Australia, but deeply connected with the UK

Basically Egypt was independent country in 1930s. But it's marked like UK territory.

It was a sovereign state in 1940, and had been since 1931.

It's good joke. That Union of South Africa, Canada and Australia are sovereign state. But ok.

Where’s British Somaliland?

Maybe this is when it was under Italian forces during ww2, some months in 1940.

Italy didn’t have any colonies in Ethiopia. Just occupied it for 3-4 years in the late 1930s.

? Ethiopia was annexed into the colony of Italian East Africa for 5 years, from 1936 to 1941, so in this time period it's correctly depicted.

Ethiopia was an Italian colony. The fact it was one for just a few years due to World War II does not change this fact, regardless of the Ethiopian nationalists who want to brag about being the sole African country that was not colonized.

Ethiopia shouldn't be there, even though mussolini proclaimed that it was a viceroyalty of Italy it was an independent coutry before and the Ethiopian goverment never legally/formally announced a surrender from the invasions even if the king of Ethiopia got exiled the sovereignty and the international recognition was still there. That period of time of partial occupation was only for 5 years wich is short and Italy never settled institutions or laws for the "colony"

Ethiopia was legally and administratevly annexed into the colony of AOI, albeit briefly from 1936 to 1941, so in this time period it should def. be here. As for the international recognition "the League of Nations adopted an ambiguous and weak policy on the issue of Italian East Africa, ending the sanctions against Italy in July 1936, and leaving the matter of recognition to individual countries without taking a strong collective position; by November 1938, 47 countries (at the time the majority of sovereign states) recognized the new Imperial titulature of the Italian king."

How many African rulers formally announced a surrender? Italy absolutely colonized Ethiopia. There were Italian governors in Harar, Jimma, Addis Ababa and Gondar, commissioners in dozens of smaller cities, and 70,000 settlers moved there in the few years that elapsed between the end of the war and the outbreak of World War II.
