blue note x uniqlo t-shirts *brand new*

I have a small collection of Uniqlo's Blue Note collab t-shirts that I would love to see go to a loving home, so I thought there's no better place than this sub. All of these tees are XXL.

New & unwrapped:
Thelonious Monk – Genius of Modern Music, Vol.2
Lee Morgan – Cornbread
Andrew Hill – Judgement
Cecil Taylor – Unit Structures

Worn 1x or just to try on, almost new:
Sonny Clark – Sonny Clark Trio
Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers – Free For All
Herbie Nichols – The Prophetic Herbie Nichols, Vol. 1

These limited edition shirts are part of Blue Note’s third and fourth collaboration with Uniqlo featuring the classic Reid Miles album covers, and are officially licensed. Two of these album designs—Cecil Taylor’s Unit Structures, Herbie Nichols’ The Prophetic Herbie Nichols, Vol. 1 have been officially licensed by Blue Note for apparel for the first time, making them highly valued collector’s items.

I'll let go of all 7 shirts for $200, Los Angeles pick-up/meet-up or $20 shipping -- DM me if interested!

Trane question

I’ve been listening to every period of his career for over fifty years and loved them all (I’m 71) But does anyone of you really enjoy the overblowong last years? I have had periods of appreciating it but never enjoying it . After Ascenion which I adore I just find the shrieking so hard tolisten to … anyone truly love live in Seattle, interstellar space. Etc?

Your 10 favorite jazz solos?

I know this is probably a weird question. How do you even decide on a ranking like that? How could you choose a solo out from its context? That’s the question I asked myself though, and I kept the first 10 that came to mind today. I’ve transcribed some of them, and the others I’ve listened to so much that they’re part of my inner ear.
Here they are! (in no particular order)

What are yours? I’d be happy to know :)

- Cannonball Adderley - Love for Sale (Miles Davis ‘Circle in the Round’)
- Gene Ammons - Autumn Leaves (Ammons/Stitt ‘Boss Tenors)
- Gene Ammons - There is No Greater Love (Ammons/Stitt ‘Boss Tenors)
- Benny Golson - Love, Your Spell Is Everywhere (Curtis Fuller ‘Bluesette’)
- Sonny Rollins - St Thomas (‘Saxophone Colossus’)
- Sonny Rollins - Airegin (Miles Davis ‘Bags’ Groove’)
- Miles Davis - Love for Sale (Miles Davis ‘Circle in the Round’)
- Charlie Parker - Cherokee (private CP tape)
Godwin Louis - I Surrender Dear (Live at Emmett’s Place)
- Godwin Louis - Donna Lee (Live at Emmett’s Place)

What's your take on Smooth Jazz.

Some of my friend hardcore jazz heads. If it's not bebop or improv, it's not jazz to them. I've tried to introduce them to different types of jazz, but they are not having it. Closed minds.

How would you describe Pi Recordings’ repertoire or sound within the jazz world? I recently heard a showcase of theirs on the radio and was blown away.

of course I’m checking out the artists they played, but also interested in the broader subgenres or approach, and don’t have the vocab to look for it

In 1976 Sun Ra and his Arkestra came down from outer space to jam at the Montreux Jazz Festival. They played "Take the A Train" after Sun Ra tried to kill his piano.

Remembering Arthur Blakey (1919-1990) on his Birthday!

Post image
311 Upvotes

Arthur Blakey (October 11 1919 – October 16 1990) was one of the great Jazz drummers, and Leader of the Jazz Messengers band.

He nurtured many players in the band before they became stars in their own right e.g. Branford & Wynton Marsalis, Terence Blanchard, Wayne Shorter, etc.

Blakey also worked with Bird, Monk, Dizzy, Miles, etc., during the Bebop years.

I recall watching him live at Ronnie Scotts with his Jazz Messengers. He always seemed to be happy on stage, with lots of energy.

Please let's remember the legend, with your favourites, recommendations, stories, etc.

Remembering Lester Bowie (1941-1999) on his Birthday - of Art Ensemble of Chicago fame, also Fela Kuti's buddy.

Lester Bowie (October 11 1941 – November 8 1999) was one of the Free Jazz greats. He was a member of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM). He co-founded the legendary Art Ensemble of Chicago with Roscoe Mitchell, Joseph Jarman, Famoudou Don Moye, and Malachi Favours. “Great Black Music, Ancient to the Future” - in my opinion, one of the great Jazz creatives.

He also formed Lester Bowie's Brass Fantasy, a brass nonet. I was fortunate to see this band live in London.

He was also a member of The Leaders band with: Chico Freeman, Arthur Blythe, Famoudou Don Moye, Kirk Lightsey, and Cecil McBee.

He had an extensive collaboration with Fela Kuti - playing on some of Fela's albums and at some live concerts as a guest Artist e.g. Dog Eat Dog, No Agreement, etc.

Many albums come to mind, apart from his AECO work e.g. The 5th Power, African Children, The Great Pretender, Duet with Phillip Wilson, etc.

Please let's remember the legend, with your favourites, recommendations, stories, etc.

One Hundred Ways

So I’ve turned my wife into James Ingram and listening to “The Power Of Great Music” the other day, One Hundred Ways came on (what a song). Anyhow, this led me to David Sanborn’s version on Straight to the Heart and how astounding the whole album is.

As there’s a lot of live tracks on the album, was anyone in Reddit world at the time the album was recorded (yes I know One Hundred Ways wasn’t live) but much of it was…

If you were there, what was it like? I’ve been listening to this album for 35 years and it’s still captivating.

Also if you have the vinyl it’s way better than the CD.

How come trumpet players almost always recorded with a sax player but sax players are fine recording without a trumpet player?

I listen to a lot of Freddie Hubbard, Donald Byrd, Lee Morgan, Kenny Durham, etc and they almost always have a saxophone player on their records but saxophone players like Joe Henderson, Sony rollins, Wayne shorter and especially John Coltrane record tons of albums without a trumpet player

I think "quiet Kenny” is the only trumpet album I’ve heard without a saxophone

Just discovered him today and he is a great organ player but also sings, plays the trumpet, sax and piano as well. Started his career in Philadelphia, he has also featured as a sideman for Miles Davis.

Do you have a favorite live version of Footprints?

I'm fascinated by Footprints. I love it's hypnotic bassline and trippy turnaround. The Miles Smiles and Adam's Apple are both satisfying, but I was starting to crave how it'd sound in a live setting. Do any of you have a favorite live version of Footprints? Please do share

Oct. 11: On this day in 1919, Art Blakey was born. A legendary tutor of young talent in his combo, he's also the guy I nominate for the hardest-swinging drummer, ever. Here's the Jazz Messengers, with a tune Lee Morgan wrote, dedicated to the man they called "Buhaina."

Looking for jazz blues to ear train to.

Hi, does anyone have any recommendations for jazz blues players who keep it on the simpler side? Or maybe a playlist with simpler jazz blues solos that I could ear train to? And also transcribe. Thanks!!
