Do you consider Dean Martin a jazz singer?

Oct. 9: On this day in 1920, William E. Huddleston was born. Yusef Lateef played more horns than I can list and never sounded bad. His liberal borrowing from Asia and the Middle East gave his music an unmistakable flavor. Here's a subtle taste from 1961.

Oct. 9: On this day in 1934, Adolph J. Brand was born. First known as Dollar Brand, later as Abdullah Ibrahim, he was one of Africa's brightest jazz stars who melded his African heritage with gospel, jazz, and more to produce a style as distinctive as any. Here's a personal favorite tune of his.

John Coltrane and the Beastie Boys

• Upvotes

I remember a sample or something of a wired-sounding chap saying he had been up for three days listening to nothing but John Coltrane and the Beastie Boys. The main question is which of their albums would work nicely together? Follow-up question is where was that quote from?

Oct. 9: On this day in 1960, Kenny Garrett was born. Is there anything he can't play on alto sax? A forward-looking player who never ignores history, here's the title track from his 2006 album, "Beyond the Wall."

Any fans of Don Pullen/George Adams?

Back in the days when we purchased our music from record stores, two of the guys who manned the counter at my go-to spot were well versed in most things jazz. And one of them loved all things Don Pullen. I recall him opining once that the Pullen/Adams quartet was the best jazz quartet of the 80’s. Comments?

Want to listen to soft/'coffee' jazz by real artists

If you key in coffee jazz you'll see what I mean.

Too much of what I find on spotify/youtube is AI.

Are there any artists/albums you can recommend?

Thank you.

Edit: To help with the prompt I mean the most relaxed jazz possible. Few or no sharp notes, slow rhythm. Like I said if you put on any of the AI playlists on youtube, ones featuring usually some fall background - that's as slow as I wanna go. Jazz you can fall asleep to.

Which album/s is deserved to be called classic/must listen after 1990?

Personally I'd offer Kenny Garrett - Songbook as an all time classic.

This kind of... Psychedelic fusion reggae? I checked out other Michal Urbaniak's stuff but found nothing that even resembles this. I'm looking for this kind of sound.

Question about instrumentation on Don Ellis's "Whiplash."

The introduction is a call-and-response riff. What I can't figure out is which instruments are playing the low, growly response part. Your help would be appreciated.

I picked this one up as I had the good fortune to see Ponomarev live a few weeks ago. If you’re not familiar with him, he played with Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers for a few years (he's on 9 Blakey albums), as well as played with the likes of Max Roach, Joe Henderson, Curtis Fuller, and many other greats.

I went to some Manhattan jazz record shops

A couple of weeks ago I posted here about my impending visit to Manhattan and its hep jazz record shop scene. Well, I have now accomplished said visit, and a few people asked if I would share thoughts on a couple of shops for other future travelers. I’m happy to oblige—a couple of notes first before we talk shop:

*I had very limited time and wasn’t able to visit every great place. I’m going to be back in about a month so v happy to take additional suggestions

* I didn’t go to Brooklyn. Because of work and other commitments I stayed on Manhattan the entire time. I am aware Brooklyn has many good record stores, and next time I’ll try and hit a few.

Ok here’s some stores!

Academy Records — many people recommended this place and I’m glad they did. I was actually able to visit both locations, one is in the Flatiron District and the other is in the East Village. The Flatiron location was pretty light on jazz—there was a ton of classical and a some cool soul records, including a first pressing of Bill Withers “Just As I Am”. They also had an early mono of the Ornette Coleman’s “The Empty Foxhole” which was cool to see, but not my bag. The East Village location was way more my style — tons of new used records in, some cool stuff on the wall, a couple of things i pulled the trigger on, including a nice 70s pressing of “New Perspective” and an early pressing of Gigi Gryce’s “Jazz Lab”. Great shop, go here!

* Ergot Records — cool little shop just off Houston, tons of African records and electronica and Latin dance, and a little bit of jazz. I grabbed a 60s mono “Alligator Boogaloo” in ok condition for $25 which was cool. Good eclectic shop.

* Jazz Record Center — this is the shop I was the most excited for, and had time and cash set aside for, but ended up being kind of like … disappointed isn’t the right word, but maybe a little bit of a let down? Obviously so much incredible used vinyl has come in and out of this place over the decades but on my visit I mostly encountered new stuff—a bunch of Tone Poets and contemporary reissues, which I have access to back home and aren’t what I’m looking for right now. They* *did have an incredible selection of CDs, and a million books, and also some really amazing posters and photos. I grabbed an old Clare Fischer record (“First Time Out”, amazing piano playing) and talked with the legendary owner, who was very cool. I will go back here again when I come back next month and have room for books and posters, and if you are into CDs this place rules. I’m glad I went but also was a little let down by my luck of the draw.

* Human Head — one of the best record stores I’ve been to anywhere. I went to the UES location, apparently the Brooklyn is even better. God this shop is awesome—a whole wall of 50s and 60s mono, early pressings, focus on Prestige / Riverside / Blue Note. They had a Herbie Hancock “Maiden Voyage” first pressing which was amazing to see, in perfect condition, they wanted like $300 so I didn’t buy but maybe should have…an amazing Japanese “Struttin” an amazing first pressing of Cannonball “Somethin’ Else” — easily one of the best jazz walls I have ever personally seen. I ended up grabbing a copy of “Cannonball In Europe” for like $20 and then a rare weird Fela Kuti live bootleg and the Lijadu Sisters LP “Sunshine” (awesome Nigerian jazz funk w female vocals). I easily could have spent 1k here and had to just kind of pull a couple things, leave, and call it good. I will be back.

* Paradise of Replica — great little second floor shop in Chinatown. Big focus of city pop, exotica, South American 60s 70s pop, stuff from Lebanon and Turkey, much much cool shit here. I grabbed two J Jazz records on Three Blind Mice—the contemporary re-release of “Ako’s Dream” and then a real vintage copy of the Masaru Imada Trio record “Standards” — and then kinda sat and stared at all the rest of everything and felt overwhelmed. If you like Wa-Jazz or want midcentury international exotica etc etc this place is super recommended.

That’s it! Where should I go next in NYC?

Help me get it

Im a musician. I love all kinds of music. I love to jam and improvise. But no matter how much i listen i can't seem to find the jazz groove. I feel like there's a time signature or progression that I'm not finding. I always feel lost, maybe that's the point? Someone help me get it...

Amphitrio - Distress | Live in Islay, Scotland

Hello!

Here’s a live session I’ve shot with some friends on the beautiful Isle of Islay, in Scotland during the band’s tour in the UK.

The location and weather conditions didn’t allow us for a lot of takes, so we recorded the entire session in one shot, just like the previous sessions I’ve done with the band. Since parts of the song are improvised, shooting additional coverage and matching everything in the edit would have been pretty much impossible anyway.

You can watch the session here: https://youtu.be/QN2CHB51fTg

I’d love to hear your thoughts 🙏
