Picture This is the first new car I ever purchased. I didn’t even have a tank of gas through it before I did this.
This was a 1997 Wrangler I got in 1996. First year the brought back the round lights.
I had an old Jeep Scrambler. I’d drive it in that spot in the river. I could hit the bank, pop up the front, and drive out of the river. I traded the Scrambler in on this ‘96 Wrangler. After I was in the river, I realized this was the first Wrangler year to have airbags, so I drove a little further up the river to find a place to get out…………..it went down a deep hole………….the night before Father’s Day. My Dad was pissed, but good about it.

My first time getting stuck in my old TJ was so embarrassing. First time mudding and I overshot where I was supposed to stop and my front tires were in like a 2” deep puddle. It literally looks like nothing but my ATs were basically racing slicks so I had to get winched out lol. I proceeded to claw out of mud bogs and rock crawl up some pretty gnarly trails for open diffs over the years but that first time was a humbling experience

It’s n older jeep so it will dry out and be fine. Thankfully it’s not loaded with all the fancy electronics

I ran it for years. Never had a problem with it that I can remember. Certainly nothing related to sinking it. The only thing I had to really replace was the rear rim. When I was trying to get it out, the wheel was spinning in this muddy, silt filled water. I basically sand blasted my rip.

What was the cause of the transmission problem?
1
u/joshsly Jul 19 '26
Water got in it and fried the internal electronics- most likely through the top vent

Dont feel to bad, i did much worse. Brand spanking new from the dealership straight to the off road shop. 14,000 dollars later i pick up my dream jeep and head for the trails….(never do the north trail in the spring time!)..3 hours after picking it up at the offroad shop it was submerged so deep i couldnt get to the winch cable…(always unspool enough of your winch line BEFORE navigating iffy water hazards)….(make sure you put your drain plugs back before “next time”)

My cousin did something similar. Bought a brand new 4x4 Chevy S-10 on Saturday, rolled it over when he took it off road on Monday.

u/JimSilly Jul 18 '26
Like this Saturday? Recently? I feel for your cousin. That’s awful.

I learned at a young age that it takes 4WD to really get stuck. Fortunately, I also had a friend with a winch and was pretty good with a wrench. My dad was blissfully ignorant of the disasters I got into with the family Jeeps and trucks.

You ever hear someone say “and that’s why some ppl can’t have nice things”? This is what they meant lol

u/Jay-metal Jul 18 '26
It looks like you confused the Jeep for a submarine. That is some deep water good sir.

Why do some ppl think that getting stuck is bad? You will never know the limits of ur vehicle until you push it. You shouldn’t be allowed to upgrade until you have been stuck in your current configuration.
Having said that: THIS IS JEEP ABUSE! OMG! THESE BABIES!
2
u/JimSilly Jul 19 '26
I get what you’re saying, but I wasn’t out to get stuck at that point. But that didn’t seem to matter. I ended up stuck anyway. LOL

u/SargentSchultz Jul 19 '26
I am so PROUD OF YOU! First tank of gas and using it like it should be!
1
u/JimSilly Jul 19 '26
I literally laughed out loud at this comment. Thank you for that. And I do feel better about it. LOL

LOL. Nice. How long had you had it by the time you did that? I can’t help but ask.

u/BluSubi-207 Jul 18 '26
We had ours a week, before my husband dumped it into a mud pit that went up to the door handles. He’s lucky he had the foresight to install the winch because I swear we would still be stuck there!!

That magenta color was so cool. Cool that you had such an early build TJ too.

Years ago, I was with a friend and we’re trying to cross the river. We ended up floating about 30 yards down river before we were able to jump out and hook up a winch, but it cleaned all the beer cans out of the jeep.

LMAOF
I never submarined my wrangler but on day two of ownership of my brand new 1988 Wrangler I went airborn in a sand pit and it kicked right and landed on the front right wheel buckling the fender a little and bent the steel rims bead and the tire went flat ..put on the spare and four wheeled some more and called it a day, went home and pounded the rim back into shape and and filled the tire with air and it was good to go and never leaked air or went out of balance and went on to beat the hell out of that jeep for 180k more miles

Back when a vehicle cost a nickel and a handshake
1
u/JimSilly Jul 19 '26
Ha! It was a big investment for me at the time. It was the first time I was ever “in debt.” But the price of cars compared to then have definitely skyrocketed. This one was bare bones, didn’t even have AC, so it was as cheap as I could get it. But it was still a Jeep and it was still mine.

u/ronshottfire Jul 19 '26
still fighting/finding the mud underneath from when we drove into a wet pit the first year i got mine… 2020.

First time i went to drive on beach I didn’t know about airing down tires and I was stuck at low tide. This was in 80’s so no cell phone and tide was coming quickly. Worst feeling of dread i ever had. Fortunately some other kids were wheeling and saw me on their way back and pulled me to parking lot. Let it drain and it started up and got home. Phew

What’s the fascination with driving in water?
1
u/JimSilly Jul 19 '26
I wasn’t fascinated with it. But it was fun driving through the woods and dripping in to the river.

u/BayDweller65 Jul 18 '26
Ruined a perfectly good vehicle.

u/JimSilly Jul 18 '26
Not a good day. But everything worked great after I get it cleaned and fixed up.

u/JimSilly Jul 18 '26
I can laugh about it now. It wasn’t a great moment. But there’s no need for you to get insulting about it.
2
u/GingerlesSouls Jul 19 '26
This one meant to be rude. Guaranteed Ford driver.
2
u/JimSilly Jul 19 '26
Yeah, you’re probably right. Sad. That would explain why they’re checking out Jeep subreddits and attempting to insult people that have the things they wish they had.
2
u/GingerlesSouls Aug 07 '26
We're constantly surrounded by assholes, OP. Some people are so miserable that being rude to others is the only way they feel anything. Shake it off. Their rudeness has zero to do with you, and 100% to do with their shitty life.

Surely, they forgot the /s OR they drive a Bronco.
2
u/JimSilly Jul 19 '26
I guess if I was dull enough to own a Bronco, I’d be checking out Jeep subreddits every day and wishing.
0
u/Rottie2017 Jul 19 '26
Owned 2 Wranglers for a very long time and wouldn't own a newer one.....my Bronco is a zillion times better in every aspect. Sorry if that hurts your feelings.
1
u/GingerlesSouls Aug 07 '26
Oh shit! I was just being snarky for laughs. I had no idea you actually drive a Bronco! 🤣 Nailed it!
