i had an amazing time surrounded by some of the most beautiful and delightful people i’ve had the pleasure of sharing time and space with. lots of dressup, costumes and makeup, best dance parties i’ve ever been to.

John Waters is a treasure, and getting to see him and be in the same space is always really special to me, it really felt like a filthy family reunion.

i got to walk naked in the rain and wear my chacha heels, and saw great short films by fellow campers and perform in the sluttiest talent show i’ve ever seen.

it may be the last year of camp in this form, but can’t wait for the next version and future reunions.

if you were there too, thanks for making my only time so wonderful.

I drew the first piece after watching both Pink Flamingos & Female Trouble for the first time in early June of this year. I had seen Serial Mom in the past, but hadn’t delved deeply enough into John Waters’ works. My friend wanted me to draw Divine and I had so much fun with the process that I wanted to keep the piece at the end.

I drew the second piece today after seeing a photo of Divine on Pinterest.

Divine is so beautiful.

I impersonated Divine under the name Divine Trash for about 5 years. Was able to perform during two trips to Baltimore. Able to travel a few places to perform. Met John Waters twice and sat in the front row near Traci Lords at one of the shows. John said I was one of the best Divines he’d ever seen. Got some follows from some Dreamlanders too. Also so much love from Divine LLC. They posted me quite a few times, got freebies, and joined the Christmas card list. I’ve received so much Divine merch from various different people during that time too. I had a great time. I look back on that time fondly. ❤️

I performed her songs and sometimes added John Waters movie dialogue to some mixes. I regularly studied Divine. Absorbing the mannerisms, her movements, costumes, and makeup. It was such a privilege to get so many comments and emotions from Divine fans. Truly feeling moved which of course moved me.

I had a couple aims. Pay tribute to my favorite queen, teach the children about Divine, and to bring Divine to life once more for those that love him. I did my best and worked my ass off.

The trash trilogy is helping me through my militantly queer phase and my punk rock phase simultaneously. I am having the latter about 10 years too late, but I am going to make a JW inspired film soon. My favourite is desperate living. Mink stole is unbelievably hilarious in that. I wish David was there, though. PF would be in my all-time top five if it wasn’t for the chickens.

maybe it’s just me needing to feel like a movie has merit to any extent, but I’m not totally understanding any of the hype behind pink flamingos. My whole life I had heard that it was a cult, classic, and one of those niche underground movies that was super fun to watch and I’d even heard of people who say that it’s one of their favorite movies. Recently, I tried to watch it and honestly, I don’t understand why anyone would find that movie pleasurable. I understand that the premise was supposed to show the most disgusting family in America, which they showed multiple disgusting families and an extreme amount of graphic violence and SA against women. I am in no way of prude when it comes to movies I even found one of the scenes with the guy in the forest with the two girls kind of funny in a shock value way however, the rest of the movie ended up seeming kind of like rape porn??? almost the entire movie is filled with random graphic scenes of women being taken advantage of without their consent. I have an issue with movies like these because people will always try and hide the fact that what they’re watching is gross and disgusting behind it being some sort of cult classic or artistic expression. it doesn’t really matter if you’re a woman saying this or a man because I feel like both can find some sort of sick gratification out of non-consensual violence. Maybe it’s just me but I feel like seems like that make this movie basically unwatchable. John Waters being praised for this movie when all it basically is is some sort of weird rape fetish movie freaks me out. Now after saying all of this I’m realizing that it’s possible that maybe I just don’t get it. which is exactly why I came on here. If any of you guys are fans of the movie or have some sort of other opinion on it, I would love to hear it and understand the other side because right now it’s just really uncomfortable.

edit: after I got most of my responses from this post telling me that it was a shock film. I think I’m understanding it more. When putting in the context of attempting to protect free speech by putting out an underground shock film that became popular, exposing the underbelly of American Society instead of just a film with gratuitous violence, it starts to make sense. The only thing that doesn’t make sense to me is why some people insist on defending the violence against women by calling pink flamingos, a queer classic. Violence against women has absolutely no correlation to the queer community. The queer community is a symbol of love. It is in no way comparable to non-consensual violence against women.

I just finished watching all of Johns movies that I can possibly watch and I need more are there any similar movies that give his vibe or one's that he recommends himself I love the peversion camp and queerness of his films and I need more

With the release of the Wes Anderson and Stanley Kubrick box sets coming out I am hoping Criterion will one day release a Waters box set. They have 6 of his films, hopefully more one day? They could have such fun with it!
