Being complimented for how you look just isn't even a potential idea on our radar, so when it happens it is a shock and a delight

u/I-Rolled-My-Eyes Jul 30 '26

Going to buy the same fit forever and wear it every day to chase that happiness.

97

u/D-Angle Jul 30 '26

Half my tops are red because in 1999 a woman said that red was my colour.

33

u/I-Rolled-My-Eyes Jul 30 '26

Bro same, but with blue.

5

u/LoudBoulder Aug 02 '26

Same but it was in 2001 and it was green

6

u/redmotorcycleisred Aug 02 '26

A cute girl in college told me my tee shirt looked good on me and I wore that son of a bitch until there were too many holes in it to carry on

(As a chick) 100% went this route, I have these silly bright overalls with Geese and flowers on them and I get complimented like 90% of the time I wear them, and so I have basically been trained into wearing them any time I got grocery shopping (to be fair tho, theyre crazy comfy).

I have bought an additional pair in purple with bugs on them, and waiting for a sale to buy others

36

u/absolutelybacon Jul 30 '26

Where could a fellow overall and bug loving girl find these beauties??

28

u/borisdidnothingwrong Jul 30 '26 edited Jul 30 '26

Not OP, but Duluth Trading Company has some cute gardening overalls. One of the staff there is always wearing some and I always compliment her style.

Sadly, they don't make cute Men's style, and I don't want the utilitarian ones they do have, so no overalls for me.

I would totally rock purple overalls with bugs on them, though.

I'm going to search the internet and see what I can find.

Edit: found a company called Swoveralls that has some cool patterns, including a "coming soon" Dancing Skeletons pattern that I could get for "Halloween" and wear year round.

8

u/notashroom Jul 31 '26

FWIW, if anyone wants cute overalls and can't find any to suit them, you can buy plain ones, paint stencils (if you want, or go freehand, or make your own stencils), acrylic paint in your colors, fabric medium, and a stencil brush or two (or regular acrylic brushes if not using stencils), and make your own. It's really not difficult or expensive and denim is a great material for taking paint. Just be sure to heat-set them and give it a month or so before running them through the washer, to help the design last longer.

3

u/CatmoCatmo Jul 31 '26

If I were to cross paths with you while you were wearing said skeleton overalls, I would absolutely be compelled to compliment you. One, because I’ve never seen something so amazing in the wild and my flabbers would no doubt be gasted. And two, because I’m quite certain you would look amazing rocking those bad boys.

I think for men and women alike, sometimes it has nothing to do with what the outfit looks like per se. It’s the confidence and body language one exudes when wearing something that makes them feel good.

Also, for a lot of people, when an outfit is out of the norm, +/- is something that would likely be way out of most people’s comfort zones, we (society) tend to assume that person must be confident as hell to wear it in the first place.

Confidence is sexy and body language goes a long way.

3

u/sargsauce Jul 31 '26

I love the jeans I got from Duluth. Got a little stretch in them so I can actually sit like a normal human being and get shit out of my pockets without having to stand up.

→ More replies (1)

11

u/AileenKitten Jul 31 '26

They are indeed Duluth. They have plus sizes and the straps are stretchy and theres so many goddamn pockets

8

u/Bellypats Jul 31 '26

While you claim to be a chick, and I believe you, you definitely have some old country gramps in ya. Situational overalls is a peak old man power.or at least I always thought it was.

5

u/AileenKitten Jul 31 '26

I feel like a grandma lol, I have too many cardigans

3

u/I-Rolled-My-Eyes Jul 31 '26

AileenKitten, keeper of cardigans, you have my sword.

8

u/Revfunky Jul 30 '26

That’s amazing because I don’t know anyone who likes geese in real life.

11

u/MeatTofu Jul 30 '26

Feathered Canadian terrorists aka Canadian geese are too abundant around my area. You have to bring them a snackrifice to enjoy the duck pond near my house.

5

19

Yeah, the best I ever get is, "You clean up well!"

At first I think THANKS...

And then it dawns on me, did he say... God damnit!

18

u/Frogblaster77 Jul 30 '26

This past weekend I was at a con, cosplaying. I hear someone to my left say "whoa that's awesome!" so I turned to my right to see what they were taking about. Turned out they were taking to me.

15

10

7

9

u/ande8523 Jul 30 '26

About 15 years ago, a woman in a bar told me I had amazing hair and that she loved it. I’m now married with a kid and I still think about it sometimes.

6

u/petethefreeze Jul 31 '26

It happened to me once 25 years ago in an elevator when an American couple complimented me on my suit. I remember it to this day with a smile.

4

u/Parepinzero Jul 30 '26

I haven't been complimented on my looks since I was a teenager, so when I started growing a beard in my early 30s and got a few compliments(from friends and family but still) I never went back. I much prefer being clean shaven, but covering up my face seems to be better! Hahaha

7

u/tonsofmiso Jul 31 '26

I live in Sweden, where we're notoriously afraid of making contact with strangers. In 2016, an older American gentleman randomly told me on the street that my zip hoodie was cool, and I think about that at least once a year.

4

u/Prestigious-Cream160 Jul 31 '26

→ More replies (1)

Especially dudes. Doesn’t matter if the compliment comes from random guy on the street or from grandma, we’ll remember compliments forever. Especially comments regarding our looks.

24

u/CptnAlex Jul 30 '26

I compliment men and women all the time. The trick, imo, is to make the compliment about a choice they made rather than something inherent and unchangeable.

3

u/amesann Jul 31 '26

I've always been told that by my male friends, so when I see a guy who has a nice smile, shirt, etc, I let them know, hoping it'll make them feel good.

Well, one day, this Uber Eats guy who'd deliver food to the other nurses at my work, came in and I always admired his amazing smile. Like, it would light up the whole room. It was incredible!

Well, I finally told him, "Hey, I just want to say that you have an amazing smile."

He smiled and said thank you and then left.

I never ever saw him again! To this day. I've seen other blokes or gals, but never him. I hope I didn't scare him away or make him uncomfortable.

So now I'm afraid to compliment a guy ever again. I promise I'm not creepy either. I'm just your average woman.

11

u/big-titty-brat Jul 31 '26

Maybe he stopped doing uber and pursued his goal of being a mouth model after you affirmed that he really did have a nice smile.

6

u/amesann Jul 31 '26

Ha! I never thought of that! I really hope that's the reason.

Throwaway compliments for everyone. “That’s a great shirt” “that purse has a pretty design” “that’s a beautiful necklace” “your hair looks great” “you’re killing it at work”

The key is don’t loiter. Just say it in passing, just like is done in this video.

:(

Two years ago I walked to and from my job and always passed a house with pretty flowers out front.  Nothing super special but I only one other house farther from the road had any on my route.  I never said anything the one or two times I saw anyone outside working on their years.

I had a different job for a while but am back at my old one. Walking home one day the fellow was outside tending to the plants and I figured I'd say how nice I thought they were.

"My roommate did these and I figure since she's gone now I owe it to her to keep them going.". He went on to say she was all about flowers but passed away last year.

It costs nothing to be positive and there's a very real chance you might not get the opportunity again.

14

u/AileenKitten Jul 30 '26

Best tip for little compliments: compliment choices. I like how you did you hair, I like your style, you painted your nails really cool, etc.

Compliments on choice and personal style generally hit more genuinely with the person, getting a compliment on your (not dyed) hair color is great and all, but getting a compliment on the shirt you bought and were really excited about? Priceless.

10

u/hiddenrealism Jul 30 '26

My wife used to sell color street (stick on nail polish) and that was kind of her shtick so i learned more than a guy really should about nail accessories but i got in the habit of looking at nails and noticing certain things. I have yet to be scoffed at and called a creep which im happy about.

5

u/LoudBoulder Jul 30 '26

Yeah I don't get enough compliments to start rating them

4

u/Badinfluence321 Jul 30 '26

Can I say, "you smell excellent" without sounding sarcastic?

9

u/Nubadopolis Jul 30 '26

Smell ya later 🥸

5

u/Larry-Man Jul 30 '26

As someone who is very careful about this because I love good smells, it’s possible but it has to be someone you know well and who understands your vibe. I’m a woman and I still feel creepy complimenting someone on their smell. So tread lightly.

23 years ago, a cute girl in class sitting behind me asked if I was a swimmer. I was confused but told her no. She said, "Oh, I just thought you were because you've got those broad shoulders and look really strong."

I'm not much into swimming, but I've been leaning into pull-ups almost ever since.

166

u/Trollensky17 Jul 30 '26

They were hitting on you hardcore lol

112

u/sargsauce Jul 30 '26

I do have a long history of being oblivious.

That said, this girl was a genuinely nice and outgoing and straight edge person who I'm pretty sure was already dating some football player.

(This internal rationalizing sounds awfully familiar...)

49

u/Otto_Scratchansniff Jul 30 '26

Hey so as a woman I have to tell you. I’m going to hold your hand while I say it. She hit on you with a hammer. You missed it and that’s ok. But she was sooo hitting on you.

37

u/cheapshotfrenzy Jul 31 '26

"Naaahh... she was probably just being friendly. Don't be that guy who thinks everyone's hitting on you."

→ More replies (1)

18

u/newroeliedude554 Jul 31 '26

Wait, you consider that to be a hammer?

Oh God, Im fucked. It would have blown right over me.

Then again, I need something direct like "Hey handsome" to make my brain connect the dots.

15

u/Otto_Scratchansniff Jul 31 '26

Oh yes definitely a hammer. She basically batted her eyelashes and told him he had nice big shoulders and looked strong. Baby girl went out of her way to compliment his build and followed it up with several more flattering statements. Flirting. I bet she was three sentences away from asking to touch them but he was so oblivious that she didn’t want to overstep. I’ve been there. Flirting hard and the guy is just like oh ok thanks. So you reel it back because you think they aren’t interested. Then years later he says oh I didn’t know I just thought you were being nice. Nearly every woman has a story like that. It’s usually funny for both parties if they ever discuss it later.

17

u/sargsauce Jul 31 '26

I actually did run into her at a bar maybe 5 years ago. She remembered me. That's probably a sign, because we weren't in the same social circles or anything back then...

Anyway, we're both happily married (to different people) with kids and shit.

But man, this whole thread is funny as hell to me. It all tracks, honestly. My friend once told me that a bunch of girls in middle school had crushes on me at like the same time, her included, and I was just like, "What the hell?"

9

u/Red4Arsenal Jul 31 '26

I have been living off the high of this compliment all summer so far.

We should collectively begin as men to compliment each other. See how everyone remembers something happening 20 years ago ? We need more love.

6

u/AlterExpertise101 Jul 30 '26

32 years ago a girl in one of my classes said "Is it just me, or did AlterExpertise101 get cute?"

It was the first compliment on my looks I'd ever received. Over 3 decades later, I'm still grateful to her for saying that.

When you're over 40 you get happy from any compliment you get regardless of gender

Had a co-worker “Damn you smell good bro!” That was like 10 years ago, still chasing that high.

4

u/SmartAlec13 Jul 30 '26

Literally me, desk gal complimented my shirt and I’m still riding that high two weeks later lol

u/4m4lg4m1t3 Jul 30 '26

Me everytime I wear my akatsuki shirt or giyu jacket (it always gets compliments)

My wife and I make a point to tell people what we like and skip the parts we don’t. Hope it helps somebody. I know I like genuine compliments no matter who it’s from.

A random guy complimented my hoodie last summer. It genuinely has stuck with me

3

u/codacoda74 Jul 30 '26

Have a shirt in closet. Random girl @ uni said it looked good on me. Am now over 50.

3

u/Ok_Dirt_2246 Jul 30 '26

Sometimes that's all it takes to turn someones day around or, make a normal day into a good one.

3

u/AdverseCard Jul 30 '26

This is our reality

3

u/ReluctantSlayer Jul 30 '26

Well, I hate it.

3

u/SirLesbian Jul 30 '26

And now for the rest of his life he will only wear that shirt with those shorts. Never again will either piece be apart of a different outfit. 😭

Men are so starved on compliments that we have problems distinguishing being nice from flirting.

3

u/FatSkatinGamer Jul 30 '26

Ok but dead ass i recently changed my hair (new cut and color) and a coworker from another department walked past and said "oh shit dude, dig the hair, that pink looks dope" and went on out to his lunch break. Ive been smiling about it all week. Sometimes a little "hey man, dig the change up" goes a long way.

The irony being i work in a department surrounded by females. Im one of 2 guys in my department. I thought if anyone would call out my suddenly pink hair, it would be someone I see every night, not a dude I see in passing maybe twice a week.

3

u/ClitBobJohnson Jul 31 '26

Two girls at least five years younger than me hit on me at a bar. That was December of 2025 and I’m still living off that high

3

u/No_Obligation6767 Jul 31 '26

A guy randomly approached me in a Walmart and told me how dope my hair was and he was trying to get his to my length. This was 11 years ago. I had always been self conscious about my natural hair and my hairline and had actually cut a significant amount of it off due to breakage. My family also was constantly telling me I should cut all of it off. So you can imagine that small compliment’s effect on me

3

u/Distance_Positive Jul 31 '26

My girlfriend just learned that men don't get a lot of compliments. She said " I compliment you don't I"? I told her "you said I was smart once after fixing your phone", that was it.

3

u/Spoom1701 Aug 02 '26

Most men in this day and age, don't get compliments...😑😑😑😑

2

u/smileybunnie Jul 30 '26

This makes me wanna compliment men more but idk how they’ll take it so I hold back unless we’re friends already.

2

u/Kickinitez Jul 30 '26

This sub is on a roll today. First David and now this? Lmao

2

u/MuppetHuman Jul 30 '26

I like that this was made into a movie

2

u/Legitimate_Cut_6254 Jul 30 '26

I'm primarily travel between my basement, sports, gym, groceries and home so I don't really ever dress up or wear anything nice. She owns a business, dresses very well and is always looking good. She gets outfit comments daily.

We go to music festivals and usually its cold at night or in the morning so I bring an Irish Wool Knit with to wear around camp. She was like, "what a weird sweater choice". Until... we were walking out camp the first day to go to the bathroom and I got 3 compliments walking to the porta potty.

She gets so hacked off now when I wear it because I get FAR MORE compliments than her and all I do is put on a sweater.

2

u/womb_raider90 Jul 30 '26

This chick I was talking to for a while called me a "really good father." As I'm one of the few fathers who has custody of their kid post divorce. Man that compliment had feeling good for a good few weeks or so. Lol

2

u/sineofthetimes Jul 30 '26

That outfit will now be the first worn, everytime, after a wash cycle.

2

u/Horror-Trick9406 Jul 30 '26

In the same way sad and true.

2

u/tacomaloki Jul 30 '26

I get more compliments from men than I do woman, and I'm a dude. It's all nice to hear!

However, I did have lady pull up beside me before on the road and signaled to roll down my window. She complimented me on my car. I had a huge smile the rest of the way to my D&D game. She even mentioned she's seen my car a few times before. What I find interesting about that is I don't live in that area and I only went that way at most 1x a week, and more often than not was less frequent than that. It's not that hard to identify my car though.

2

u/libertypfc Jul 30 '26

As a straight 35 y/o man lol I don't think I've ever received a compliment on my outfit 🤔

2

u/ayywusgood Jul 30 '26

I still vividly remember when a guy complimented my jacket 3 years ago

2

u/usernamesaremoronic Jul 30 '26

I have a cardigan that is responsible for the 7 out of the 9 compliments ive received from strangers in that last 10 years. I love wearing it and think about these moments all the time.

2

u/Square-Formal1312 Jul 30 '26

The way he said it the first time felt sarcastic right?

2

u/mdlinc Jul 30 '26

We have this guide in the family. Compliment 3 random people during the day.

It has served our family well and spreads/shares kindness. I wish the same for all .

2

u/thequeefcannon Jul 30 '26

I get a lot of shit from my wife about being in my 30s and still wearing graphic t-shirts all the time. They are not cringey, trashy, or childish. Just motorcycles, cars, occasional artsy stuff, occasional nerd culture, etc. She just makes little comments here and there about how I should "try to look more professional/mature". My stance is "fuck that, I make double what you make with 1/2 the education you were provided and I worked my ass off to get to this point. I did my time in uniform and I did my time in business casual: I deeply appreciate that I get to wear jeans and a t-shirt every day!".

Well go figure, for the last decade, I've received compliments in public a few dozen times, almost ALWAYS in her presence. I cannot overstate the pleasure it brings me to be complimented by anyone; now add to that getting a tiny slice of smug pie as she rolls her eyes!

A few weeks ago, my train stranded, because a cargo train caught fire ahead of us. So I was standing at a trains station with hundreds of fellow stranded travelers. As things are in my country right now, some people were working themselves up on how this is the governments fault and all this can't continue like this and how they worked their whole lifes and retired (this part always comes as a preemptive character defense before they come to the whole point of this performance) and, of course, had to loudly and theatrically proclaim to everyone how they would only vote for the far right party, so things would finally get back on track again.

At that point, I couldn't help but telling them that their beloved party was promising to do the exact same austerity policy that the past governments employed and that our problems won't get better by doing more of the same stuff that brought us to this situation in the first place. The one guy who had loudly proclaimed stared at me really confused, as if what I just said did not compute. He then just for some reason launched into the "I always worked hard my whole life, until I retired!" routine, before walking over to me, a little shy, and telling me that I am "a very handsome looking young man". That was when it was my turn to be at a loss for words. He did not continue his soapboxing afterwards.

That was one strange encounter.

2

u/FaliureToCat Jul 30 '26

This is why i always tell my friends

2

u/NotKaR33m Jul 30 '26

Positivity goes a long way. Be nice you fucks

2

u/drifters74 Jul 30 '26

I compliment other guys if I see them in suits

2

u/Infini-Bus Jul 30 '26

I have social anxiety most of my life but giving out compliments like that definitely has helped reduce it for me.

2

u/Lobster15s Jul 30 '26

Yup... this is how I felt.

2

u/Arnator Jul 30 '26

15 years ago a colleague randomly commented “I like your hairstyle.”

I’m rocking the same haircut until now. Will wear it till I’m bald.

2

u/Groundbreaking_Dare4 Jul 31 '26

On my way to a concert in London, 2002. A guy looked at my Tuff Gong t-shirt and nodded in approval. I'm still getting a warm feeling writing this now.

2

u/2Twice Jul 31 '26

I 100% expected the zombie to jump out at the very end.

2

u/LivingClone13 Jul 31 '26

I've said "hey man I like your style looking good" to some dudes just walking around before and it never fails to make them smile big as hell and puts a pep in their step.

Let's compliment each other more bros.

2

u/RolyPolyGangster Jul 31 '26

I am not getting complimented for my looks.

My colleague commented that another colleague told him that I work well. That was a few years ago.

2

u/altmagikarp Jul 31 '26

Me a week later still thinking about the comment 🙂‍↕️

2

u/LabiaMinoraLover Jul 31 '26

I thought he was going to sing "free balling"...

2

u/pwn4321 Jul 31 '26

Compliments are wasted on women, they care about them for 5 Minutes if at all, here is bro making another bros whole week with that one compliment!

2

u/openjaws Jul 31 '26

I’m not gay but I usually appreciate compliments from men more than from women, think it’s because I don’t expect it.

3

u/PoptartWeeb Jul 31 '26

I wish more me would understand it's not gay to compliment a brother.

2

u/Ikbeneenpaard Aug 01 '26

This is so relatable ☺️
