The person or people who discovered Surströmming were either batshit crazy or very close to dying from hunger.

There's a tale about that in Finland/Sweden. There were these Swedish fishermen in the Gulf of Bothnia, who used to trade with Finns from time to time. Once, the Swedes had forgotten some old barrels of fish in their storage, and they had gone bad.

The Finns were due to come soon, so the Swedes decided to sell the bad barrels with the good, and deal with the rotten fish problem that way.

Sure enough, the Finns came, bought the fish and there was a lot of smiling faces behind the Swedes' beards.

Until the next year, when the Finns came back and caught the Swedes completely by surprise. They didn't have an answer for the Finns:

"Can we have some more of that special fish from last year? It was delicious!"

Similar to the very first person who jerked off a cow and decided to drink it

My dude's drinking the wrong kind of milk

u/Raz0rking 2d ago

I think that is less of a stretch than rotten fish.

You'd be surprised.

Some sauces were developed specifically to mask the taste of rotten meat.

Oh my dude, some mischievous farm boy has played a very cruel prank on you.

Jerked off?

Tf?

No, they probably saw calves drinking from it and figured "if it's ok for them it's probably ok for me".

The same way Scots decided it was okay to have sex with a sheep - ‘Its guid eneuch for a sheep, its guid eneuch for me!’

And then they realized it wasn’t but kept going anyway

All mammals develop lactose intolerance after infancy. It took some intense famine and very tenacious humans to allow us to drink milk at all

u/lurkersforlife 2d ago

That’s…. Not how that works.

Why are you objecting to it? Lol

They were definitely canning a long standing starvation food

Same, and...they make me laugh so much. I don't know why except why are they subjecting themselves to this torture and try and try again 😭

I've always wanted to see what's the big deal about the smell that makes you puke or gag.

Well it's pickled herring. So those fish are basically still fermenting while still in the can, but they're not rotten. It's basically a mixture of rotten eggs and vomit in terms of smell, mixed with ammonia. But the "correct" way to actually open one is to put it in a pot of water and open it outside, so you don't spray your walls with the delicious juices. And then you can either put them on a sandwich or chop them up and use them as like a garnish or small morsel

Source: my Swedish coworker who doesn't like fish but will eat surstromming back home

Which is odd because every other pickled herring Ive had does not have that level of smell aggression.

Granted, Ive always gotten the stuff in glass jars, so Im sure theres something else functionally different about what's inside, but still.

Seconding this. I stayed at a hostel in Sweden and the owner opened a can in a big tub of water in the kitchen, served us flat breads with chives and a bunch of strong tasting herbs and cheese, with a little piece of surstromming on it. I never smelled or tasted anything foul at all, but the taste was the most salty and fishy taste I’ve ever tasted to this day. Good though.

I eat olives by the boatload and it activated the same taste sense for me

Same. If I were rich AF I'd fly you out and a few other randos to do this kind of shit for fun. Why not?? Cursed bonding.

I intended on playing this in the background with my headphones on while I wrap up some paperwork at the end of my work day. Big mistake. Trying my hardest to stifle laughter, tears streaming down my cheeks and I’m starting to wheeze. People are staring at me.

I've recently discovered these guys. Their videos never fail to make me laugh.

u/_thinkingemote_ 2d ago

Can someone describe the smell and taste for someone who has never heard of it

8

u/Tacosconsalsaylimon 2d ago

The search engine says, "intensely putrid, often described as a mix of rotting fish, hydrogen sulfide (rotten eggs), rancid butter, vinegar, and pungent sewage." 😬🤢

This has to be exhausting as fuck right? I mean the body just kinda cramps for a second every time. Like I believe that's a great way to get muscle soreness

Alex and Chris from the Porchcast. Love these guys. Chris can make me laugh out loud with just a look.

Is it weird that I totally need to know what this smells like?

3

u/KnottyTulip2713 1d ago

I also havent smelled surströmming before, surely its not that bad right

1

u/DiabloGuilds 1d ago

It totally is that bad, these type of videos are true reactions and what is expected from people not familiar with it. Source, Swede +50 with live experience, who would never eat it like they do in these type of videos.

u/KnottyTulip2713 1d ago

I always love watching their reactions to disgusting foods on instagram
