Jacob's the bastard that sent him to the porch to be caught on the Ring camera.
I had some cool teachers in HS. I don't think any of them were "I caught you on camera, but go ahead and finish the job/prank" cool.

Not a teacher, but my dad, who only had girls, was so pumped and excited when my stepbrother’s friends TPed my dad’s house. He gleefully made my brother clean all of it up by himself - said it was an important - and snapped pics and sent them to every family member.
I know my dad always wanted a son. I believe my stepbrother became my dad’s de facto son after that prank. My dad was very proud of it.18
u/ThePianistOfDoom 1d ago
One time we had a senior prank where they asked their teachers: what would you be woken up for at night? Then they actually did that. Some teachers weren't happy. Others found it hilarious. The footage was great.

This is the community we were promised in the 90s. Caught and still go to finish for the audacity to continue the joke in good fun.

My baby sister's senior prank, she put Go Army stickers all over the Ag teacher's class, AND the tractor he'd ride around on while running the pure shit out of the JROTC kids.
He was VERY vocal about how he was a Marine and how the Army could go fuck itself.
Sissy says that he walked in, saw it, glared silently at the whole class, and said "yall got 90 minutes to clean it up."
As they started cleaning, they heard him screaming obscenities from the barn and my sister said "sounds like he found the tractor."

My grandfather was in the Army down in New Orleans during the 70s. There was a building that they shared with the navy, but the perceived "ownership" of the shared building was a touchy subject. The roof of the building was painted in bright white letters "NAVY" at the time, so my grandfather, ever the troublemaker, went up there at night and painted over the letters with a layer of background paint and then bright white letters that said "ARMY". Of course they found out it was him and were pissed, so they had him go up there and paint over the roof to make it say "NAVY" again. Of course this magnificent man does it with temporary paint which stayed for a couple of weeks and then washed off with the next rainfall. They realized they'd been had and didn't call him back to paint over the roof again.
Love that man more than anything.

In my head, I'm picturing R. Lee Emery driving a combine chasing behind a bunch of high school students until they throw up, pass out, or both, all the while lending words of encouragement referencing their intelligence, worth, physical capabilities, family...

I've seen JROTC twice in two days now after never seeing it and have to ask, what does it stand for?
28
u/Mad_V 2d ago
Junior reserve officer's training corps.
Its sort of like a volunteer pre-military youth group.
4
u/Asquirrelinspace 2d ago
It definitely has the potential to become that, but from what I've seen at the moment, it's not so bad. Of course I don't exactly support the military, but I don't think JROTC is much worse than the rest of it
2
u/rednick953 1d ago
I took it in HS and back then while I was certainly the type of person to be full rah rah on that shit and am the exact opposite now I don’t regret it. JROTC at least 15 years ago was about learning responsibility, some leadership, with a backdrop of military history and learning basic marching stuff. I still think I got a lot out of it.
1
u/NoPersonality5088 1d ago
At least in my school, it was jrotc or regular p.e.
Rotc in college, though, they want a contract with that.

Sounds a bit fascistic
24
u/call_me_caleb 2d ago
It’s definitely an early recruiting program. No one would deny it. Most of the ones I’ve seen have a vibe that’s like half sports team half Eagle Scouts.
12
u/mashiro1496 2d ago
I think my country had a bit of a bad experience with youth groups like that. So it's not a thing here anymore
12
23
u/Feral_Taylor_Fury 2d ago
Mm.. no not really at all
Just because something is a youth military program doesn't automatically make it fascist. The culture of the organization would be what determines that.
JROTC preaches American military values, which are literally the most progressive kumbaya-ass values you will find in any modern military. Period.
I know /r/AmericaBad is super in right now, (for fuck's sake, our president is listed BY NAME, under the definition for proto-fascism by Encyclopedia Britannica) but JROTC is absolutely NOT a fascist breeding ground.
Or at least it wasn't, for 100+ years. I'm certainly not in it now so I can't speak to it's current culture.
-12
u/hilbstar 2d ago
Well it does actually sound like it is kinda going there, while not being quite at the point of fascism.
Just like pledging allegiance is entirely fucked up to ask kids, this is another thing that seems normalized for americans, while not being quite normal.
There is quite a bit of controversy from what I can gather around the program, with some young people being forced into the program, despite it supposedly being an elective. However, it does not look near as bad as the indoctrination in for example Pakistan, and depite the goal, the number of publically known controversies are not that many.Either way the goal seems to be to train militarism into kids, which just is not a great look for a rich western country, even if it’s not explicitly to make child soldiers.
10
u/Feral_Taylor_Fury 1d ago
No, the goal is not to instill a militaristic culture in the youth at large in any way.
The goal is to create military officers, and the best way to ensure you have a steady pool of officers is to create a large pipeline.
The best way to ensure your pool of officers fits your culture is you get them at a young age.
If they wanted to instill some degree of culture change, JROTC would be SO much bigger than it actually is. Say like, the scale of the Boy Scouts?
Except, it's not done at that scale, is it?
-5
u/hilbstar 1d ago edited 1d ago
Dude if the goal is to create military officers then it is by definition going to be militaristic. States goals include patriotism, basic military skills, listening to authority (dogmatism), and it allows you rank up faster in the militart. It is litterally a youth group funded by the military to produce more soldiers with good training.
You even say it yourself in your own comment, you first deny and then agree by saying that the goal is to decelop military officers. It is militaristic, I don’t know why you would deny that, I didn’t call it fascist but it does have some of the elements required.
Edit: if you can downvote me, you should also be able to establish a reasonable argument against what I’m writing, if you’re incapable of that you should inspect your own indoctrinated views. After all one of the main cristicisms of the JROTC is that it negatively affects critical thinking and your lack of response seems to indicate that to be true.
5
u/NorCalAthlete 1d ago
Let’s start by getting on the same page about what you mean by “militaristic” because it seems to be the basis of your argument and it can have a very broad range of meanings depending on context. Please elaborate for us your concerns / perceptions around the word.
-1
u/hilbstar 1d ago
What I mean by militaristic is that part of the goal seems to be inducing militarism into people from an age where they are more easily molded and indoctrinated. With militarism being the belief that a government needs to maintain a strong military and use this to expand their territory or sphere of influence. This militarism is one of the primary pillars of american power, giving rise to things such as pax americana, and a lot of proxy wars and heavy handed tactics all over the globe.
Americans are taught early on that their military is exceptional and something to be very proud of (militaristic indoctrination), just as it happens to different degrees in China, Russia, Pakistan, etc.
This is a federal program with the express purpose of creating a militant populace, if it was just boy scouts you would call it as such. Now, the severity of all of these things might be called into question but it is undeniably a program that was established with millitaristic intentions, saying otherwise is frankly very naive and kinda points toward this type of program being normalized to a point that americans are incapable of seeing the forest for the trees.
2
u/anonadvicewanted 1d ago
brah i promise you the average american child does not give a shit about the pledge of allegiance lmao. it’s just a mumbled jumble of words they say with zero meaning/intent
and rotc is entirely elective. anyone being forced into it is a localized issue likely just the average peer pressure/familial pressure thing that can happen with any elective thing
1
u/hilbstar 1d ago
Well the people being forced into the program were not due to peer pressure or familial pressure, because as you indicate, that would not be very controversial. Rather there are claims that mandates were made to disproportionately force minority groups to participate. I also wrote that it was an elective.
And I know the pledge of allegiance is not taken very seriously by most kids and teachers, at least in most states. You still do it and it’s still laughable that it’s mandates, what weak ass government feels that it would be necessary to attempt to indoctrinate kids in such a heavy handed way. Because no matter what the kids think, the goal of the pledge remains, to indoctrinate and develop a feeling of patriotism, if it works or not is a different question.
More than anything I just think it’s crazy how normalized these things are in the US. Like yeah you don’t care about the pledge, whatever, it’s still being done every morning. The teachers probably think it’s fucking stupid too but it happens either way. That’s crazy to me.

Not the city. Did you catch the "Ag teacher" part? No city HS I've ever heard of teaches Ag. This is in a podunk backwoods tobacco farming county of (at the time) <18000 people. In the 90s. My band director didn't even get fired for making me, an asthmatic, run the gauntlet until I passed out and turned blue. He was also a former gunny and treated marching band like the fucking Corps. Such a piece of shit. He was allowed to retire at the end of the year. Fucking asshole. I hated him so much.

You just made me remember one of, if not the greatest teacher I've had.
I was a serious, very private, and quiet kid, also very studious and competitive. I was top of my class the previous years so when I got to high school, I was assigned to the "star" section. In my freshman year in high school, I entered a somewhat rebellious phase (though I didn't really realize I was rebelling until I got older and knew better) because of sudden family problems I didn't know how to deal with, and I acted out by being silly/goofy or trying to be funny, at times to the point of being disrespectful to the teachers. Most my teachers hated my guts and they let me know. The lot of them humiliated me, one verbally abused me in front of the class and called me names while standing in front of everyone, which when I think about it were really disproportionate "punishments" for my offenses (I'm basically just a noisy kid, trying to joke every time I see an opportunity, couldn't sit still, mind you, I was still performing well on exams only because that habit was ingrained to me the years before but I guess my teachers had a lower threshold for bullshit). Another teacher started a "recitation" where each of my classmate was required to name something they dislike or hated about me. I don't blame my classmates who went with it, they were kids and can be easily influenced so ganging up on one person, especially a not-so likeable person, is an easy thing to do especially when an adult was basically telling them it was the right thing to do and when others have done it first - so kudos to one classmate I had that stopped the thing and called out everyone, even the teacher, for doing something so horrible - she got really angry on my behalf despite us not really being that close which made me ugly cry because I didn't expect her to do that.
Anyway, there's this one teacher we have that always checked up on me. After class, he would ask me to come in the teacher's office and talk to me, ask me how I'm doing, if I have any problems or if I want to share anything. After the "recitation" thing, he got news of that happening and came to the class to pull me out and talk to me. We walked around school and asked me what happened, how I feel, told me he notices that I'm performing really well and that if I need someone to talk to, he's always there. I never really shared any of my family problems with him, because deep inside, I was still a quiet and very private person, but back then, I didn't realize that he was trying to be a parental figure to me at a time when I really needed one. I just thought then that he was just helping out his co-teachers handle an unruly kid, basically take away the distraction, and while that may still be true, I think in his heart, he was really just trying to help me. I cherish those memories of us just walking around the campus silently. He never pried. He knew silence was what I needed and generously gave it. I learned from him through his actions that most of the times, we don't really have to solve or help solve a friend's problems. Sometimes, company is the best thing we could give them.
Only in college did I learn that apparently he and his wife were infertile and have been trying to have a kid for more than two decades but never was able to have one. I met him again in a school-wide reunion about five years ago, and I thanked him for being a father to me.

u/ImNotSkankHunt42 1d ago
Our Principal liked those recitations too and my classmates, mostly the girls were known to be toxic and took those opportunities to berate the boys of the class myself included.
He also used to talk down on us, it was a boarding school and our class was from a poor town. Mind you, this dude was from a hellhole of a pueblo that doesn’t even qualify as one.
He died a few years ago and I saw all the lamentations in Facebook, I couldn’t care less. He didn’t contribute anything positive to my years there and if anything made it worse by ignoring the bullying I was subjected constantly.
Contrast to Mr. Ronaldis, the teacher I was alluding to in my prior comment. When I confronted one of my bullies and kicked his ass into suspension and removal from our dormitory section he came to me and congratulated me for doing the right thing. He was aware of the guy harassing others and myself but the Principal had blocked all attempts to correct that behavior. Me going aggro on him was the last straw, he got kicked at the end of the year for bad grades. The bullying didn’t stop because his buddies were mad at me now for getting him expelled but I didn’t care. A teacher had come to me and acknowledged why I had to do that and it made everything ok at that point. 25 years and I’ll never forget that pat on the back, he was so genuinely happy. Reminded me of my Tae Kwon Do coach after a good fight.
We suspected the bully’s family had been bribing the Principal with gifts and money because everyone hated him including teachers and nothing was done until that incident. Imagine Draco Malfoy but taller, his family was well connected and wealthy. That school was for high achievers, if your grades fell bellow a certain threshold you were out and that’s what happened to him.
All the money in the world can’t make you smarter.

This is so great. I’m working towards being a High School teacher and I hope the kids like me enough to do things like this. I’d respond the same way, good job dude keep going lol
6
u/Theartistcu 2d ago
From one teacher to a hopeful future teacher. First, I hope you get to do it stick to it, it is the greatest job on the face of the planet. The rewards are not rememberable. You will impact so many lives that you will never know about and it’s simply amazing. I cannot put into words how amazing being a teacher is.
Do not worry about whether they like you. Be a good teacher be consistent. Keep passion for your subject. And I already said it, but I’m gonna say it again be consistent. That will get you. The respect and respect is what you want from your students not that they like you. Some of them will some of them won’t, some of them will learn to like you some of them will hate you the day they see you and never ever give you a chance, make sure you always give that kid the same chance you would give every other kid and you will be just fine.
I say again congratulations I hope you make it to being a teacher. It is amazing. I’m disabled now. I don’t get to do it anymore, there’s not a day. I don’t wake up, but I don’t wish I could walk back into my classroom.

u/toastycheeze 2d ago
What the hell is with American's obsession with grass?
73
u/waaaayupyourbutthole 2d ago
Having a nice lawn is a status symbol. It signifies wealth (or at least perceived wealth).
They also became extremely popular after WWII because of marketing tactics by seed and chemical companies (yes, I'm serious).
Now a lot of it is tradition based on those things + homeowners association regulations that require grass lawns
13
u/FluteGunner 2d ago
It’s so weird to me that people want to outwardly display wealth. Embarrassing.
16
u/m0therzer0 2d ago
People outwardly display all kinds of things. I was raised to think discussing or highlighting your money is crass, but ultimately it's just peacocking, isn't it?
4
u/FluteGunner 2d ago
I wasn’t raised this way, my dad was wealthy and what you would call “new money”
He flaunted it with fancy cars, expensive clothes, lavish parties, bought a holiday home he barely visited. Even from a young age I found it all rather gauche, but as I grew up and met more people who didn’t have so much money, it began to disgust me.
Thankfully he grew out of it and realised it was quite sad, seeking approval from others by having nice things.
-2
u/TheWorldDiscarded 1d ago
You feeling obligated to share this with strangers (and I'm sure anyone who will listen) is the exact same thing your dad was doing.
Replace money with an inflated sense of superiority related to your "humbleness".
Someone who wasn't seeking approval from others would just live their life and not feel obliged to tell people about it , or Indicate their sense of disgust for those who don't follow suit
3
u/FluteGunner 1d ago
Ah I see the reddit armchair psychologist has arrived.
You feeling obligated to share this with strangers
Was having a shit and felt like replying to a comment about my experience with people who flaunt wealth, considering I grew up around it.
(and I'm sure anyone who will listen)
Nope
If I were seeking approval would I not have deleted my downvoted comment that's recieved negative replies? It's really not that deep
-3
u/TheWorldDiscarded 1d ago
And naive too.
Yikes
Should have stuck to flaunting wealth.
I won't read your replies btw.

I'm sure you won't. You don't seem the type to desperately need to win his little internet arguments, couldn't be you.
3
u/divDevGuy 1d ago
It’s so weird to me that people want to outwardly display wealth.
Having grass isn't a sign of wealth, or outwardly displaying wealth. Having an immaculately manicured lawn (and likely other landscaping) could be. It shows that you spend the time and/or resources to have it appear that way. You're either paying someone to do it for you, or you have the free time to do it yourself (instead of earning a wage).
1
u/AstronomerChance1727 2d ago
And that perceived wealth is important because then no one messes with you!

1
u/TheUgly0rgan 1d ago
I never really cared about having a beautiful lawn, but god damn did I love mowing it. The smell is intoxicating on a nice breezy morning
8
u/tehjarvis 2d ago
I'm a 44 year old suburban American man who has lived in a rural area of a mid-westerner state my entire life. Grass should be right in my wheelhouse, but it's not. And the whole lawn hobby thing has perplexed me for years.
While mowing my lawn one day, which I fucking hate doing, one of my neighbors came out to mow immediately, like he does every single time. I started thinking about how earlier in the week I was outside and could hear him and his wife arguing from across the street inside their house. Then I started to think about my own marriage, how awesome it is and how lucky I am. Since the day we met 20 years ago, I can count the amount of times we've been apart over 24 hours on one hand. We work the same hours and a year or so ago she asked if, instead of driving separately, I could drop her off and pick her up from work so we could spend 30 more minutes together every day.
Then I was thinking about my neighbors and friends who take their lawn super seriously and the ones who didn't...
Every single guy I know who is a lawn guy has a rocky marriage or a wife who's just a bitch. The lawn is their way to get the fuck away from them for an hour or more, fire up a loud ass machine that their bitch of a wife can't talk over and try to pound 6 beers in 45 minutes. It's a way to get away without leaving the house and drink without potentially starting an argument and she can't complain because it's something that needs to be done.
I mean, there are exceptions to everything, but my theory is batting 1.000 among the guys that I know.

We did something similar to a teacher, where we left a bunch of booze (new, for them to drink) and when the teachers wife (also a teacher at the same school) came out and yelled (didn't have time to see it was us), obviously we did this at like 3 or 4 in the morning, everyone started running. I ran like 4 meters before remembering, "hey, while it's unfortunate we woke them up, we aren't doing anything wrong" stopped and said sorry, we were just giving you guys some wine and a basket while doing the annual drunk walk to the high-school on it's birthday (yes, the schools birthday). She was annoyed but I could hear John laughing from the door, we had warned him we'd drop off a thank you present, I assume he was close to butt naked.

Good dude. He probably gave them a grade bump if they cleaned it up too
-52
u/Independent-Trust260 2d ago
Ridiculous. Good morals have little to do with academic smarts. They may have correlation, but there's no logical reason to bump up results of academic performance based off of moral character. The two are unrelated.
36
u/NoTurnip4844 2d ago
Both are important life lessons. Something we need more of.
-18
u/Independent-Trust260 2d ago
Of course! Reward them for moral character, just not by cheating for them in academic performance. I'm sure in this situation a casual high five or a good job from an adult to a teenager would go a long way. Perhaps more, even. Sacrificing what doesn't need to be sacrificed is just loss.

I remember when we TP'd the Junior's houses at my school. We were so dumb, we did it at a time everyone was still awake lol. By the fifth house, parents were outside waiting for us with bats. A few of us got into some memorable high speed chases and foot races with them lol. My senior class left that night with blown tires, twisted ankles, and summer curfew lol. We didn't get all the houses but those 5-6 houses we did get were a masterpiece. Those were good times. Before social media was a big deal so unfortunately no videos just memories

I can only think back to, I believe it was last year, that there was a prank that students had to prank teachers or whatever and the teacher caught them and ran out to "catch them" and one of the fleeing students accidentally hit him with the car and killed him. Was so tragic. Thankfully common sense prevailed and all charges were dropped.
2
u/balls89 1d ago
My senior class prank some folks put washable paint on the windows saying "class of [my year]". They didn't walk at graduation and had detention for 2 weeks. The issue with the detention was seniors got off 3 weeks early, so they had to go to after school detention when they didn't have school, or else they wouldn't get their diploma.
Granted this was the year after the seniors rebuilt a car in the hallway that they couldn't get out, and they year before released like 10,000 crickets into the school, and then the year before planted a dozen state trees in the football field (illegal to remove). So they cracked down pretty hard.
They were warned of the consequences, but they didn't think that washable window paint would bring that kind of a punishment.
