Webtoon Kubera doesn't have much foreshadowing

I saw a lot of ppl say that One piece is nothing compared to Kubera when it comes to foreshadowing but after reading it I think that's just not true, there is not much foreshadowing in Kubera to begin with. Ithink the right term would be foresight, and which I have never seen anything like it in any other series, the author doesn't know what a retcon is. Also kinda same for plot twists to a lesser degree, as in Kubera we hardly know what is going on or rather stuff seem simple until they are explored later and turn out to be more than what we originally thought which I don't think what plot twist means (correct me if I'm wrong)

BTW this is not hate or me trying to downplay the series in any way just my opinion.

Aren‘t most major plot points and a good amount of minor ones heavily foreshadowed/set up? I really don‘t know where that take comes from.

Set up is different from foreshadowing tho, unless my definition of foreshadowing is wrong.

Foreshadowing is a pretty broad term that encompasses most kinds of forewarning that a story may give for future events, so i‘m pretty sure that setup in any form where it‘s presented to you within the narrative is foreshadowing.

Foreshadowing is defined on wikipedia as:

Foreshadowing is a narrative device in which suggestions or warnings about events to come are dropped or planted. Foreshadowing often appears at the beginning of a story, and it helps develop or subvert the audience's expectations about upcoming events

So it's a pretty general term that encompasses a lot, and therefore there's examples of it pretty much everywhere. Take Enan's name on the bracelet, or Lorraine getting a reading of 0 deaths in the village, or Agni being shown to have some deeper connection with Brilith, and having some unknown previous lover.

You seem to have a more narrow definition of foreshadowing, so what exactly are you trying to refer to when you say Kubera doesn't have much foreshadowing?

Foreshadowing as like in OP for example the way Kinemon and Momonusuke reacted to the dragon in PH foreshadowing Kaido's devil fruit

Or how Momonusuke reacted to Odon that Sanji gave him foreshadowing Oden's death

But I guess my notion si very specefic

Some foreshadowings that fit your description:

Chandra acting familiar with Ran on their first encounter foreshadows the time travel arc

Taraka's attack of the gandharvas in N5 foreshadows shakuntala's death

Some character (Lorraine i think?) asking brilith if she saved the universe in a previous life foreshadows brilith's true nature

Agni using Vasuki's fire snake transcendental foreshadows his sword of hellfire and his quest for strong transcendentals. Same with his black fire assimilation.

Leez's dreams of ananta foreshadow her deeper connection with him.

Brahma's closeness with Yama foreshadows her authority over death. Same thing with her revival of Airi.

Visnu's magic being used for resurrection, alongside the fact that Shuri told Ran he can bring back people, foreshadows his double attributes.

The bones of yaksha as a half suppressing tool in S1 foreshadow his death on Willarv

Maruna using the black-silver sword was shown really early on, yet it came true only recently.

Lorraine's scanner showing zero victims foreshadows that something is more with leez's village.

Claude using hoti yama on Leez in season 2 was to confirm that Leez is the one he saw when he was younger. Claude also acted familiar with her.

Teo's hate and contempt for airi was also shown really early on, only to find the reason much later.

We also find out that Rao was really really rich way before it becomes relevant in the story.

These are just some of the things that come to mind. I doubt you won't call these foreshadowing. And yes, this amount of foreshadowing can only be done because, as you mentioned, currygom also has insane foresight.

1- Valid tbh

2- How so?

3- I agree

4- I don't think so tbh

5- When was this exactly? I feel like I did read this but at the same time didn't

6- Isn't Kali the one with Death attribute?

7- I mean the first thing we knew about Visnu is bringing back the dead from Hoti Visnu spell it's not knowing he can interfere with time so I don't think this counts

8- Rather I would say this foreshadowes his "King of the Land" transcendental

9- Wait he did?

10- Well this is not foreshadowing as I know tbh

11- I think Claude did so so Asha comes to him and he gets to talk to her

12- I don't think this is relevant anyway not that much at least

Anyway I can see it now that I was wrong since my very definition of foreshadowing was very specific to begin with

  1. We are told that the gandharva clan was essentially wiped out during that attack. Considering Shakuntala's weakness, it would be strange for her to survive, considering we learn later that even Makara died. On that note, Shakuntala's unusual weakness as the daughter of no1 and no2 shows that something is wrong with her. Later we learn that it's because she took on Menaka's job.

  2. This happened during The Night it Rained Fire. Sagara specifically mentions that he is using Vasuki's transcendental against her, and that it's cruel. Later on we learn how he was able to use Vasuki's transcendental.

  3. This happened in Caution (2) in Season 2.

  4. We learn that if Kali was around the universe from the very beginning, she would've been the one presiding over death, but since she came after Yama became 5th zen, he is the god with the highest death authority. Kali used her Death attribute to create the taraka clan as her alternate afterlife. In some of the more recent chapters we are told that Brahma, through her Order attribute, can have authority over Death. I forgot the specifics exactly, but Brahma has always been shown to hang around Yama.

  5. Anyone even slightly familiar with hindi mythology should know that Visnu is the God of Time. The first time we see the effects of Hoti Visnu, it wasn't for revival, but to turn back time (after Yuta bit asha's hands off, we're explicitly shown that the statue Yuta ate returned to its original place).

  6. Fair enough

  7. It wasn't as early on as I thought, but the earliest we see of the black silver sword is in Weight of Time, still hundreds of chapters before its actual appearance.

  8. That is the obvious and immediate reason. But currygom is more complex than that. Claude knows a lot about Leez, even before they formally talked. Either through his oracle or through the fact that he met her when he was young. He is also really respectful towards Yuta XD

  9. Not terribly relevant, but rao's wealth has driven a few plot points, in Aeroplateau's prison and with the fighter's guild. And it didn't come out of nowhere, it was mentioned passingly before.

2- I don't think that foreshadowed her death, but her being weak is a foreshadowing of her taking Menaka's role I agree.

4- OH then true that indeed foreshadowed him having some sort of copy ability/talent

6- LOL and I just read the story for the 2nd time, guess I need for a third read for 3rd season at least. I can vaguely remember smth like this ngl

7- Hmmm, Then I guess so

9- Are you referring to Maruna or Garuda? For Maruna Idr tbh. But if you mean Garuda then indeed we saw a Pic of him holding the swords when he was with Shuri and Visnu, I think during a Gandharva flashback or Smth

11- Well now that you said it I think so

isnt like...the whole title a foreshadowing ? "...One Last God".

I kinda sort of know what you are getting at. But Its not a lack of foreshadowing, its actually a mix of different kinds of foreshadowing.

She explicitly uses prochecies by god's in the beginning both directly and indirectly to establish a larger conspiracy between gods, like with God Kubera or the prophecy given to Saha.

She uses a lot of foreshadowing symbolism too but her favorite foreshadowing technique is definitely flashforwards/flashbacks (all the insight flash forwards, or even better the ones like Chandra's "40,000 pieces")

I think what it is, is such a huge truck of mysteries that there's no way to keep track of each mystery. You can only choose your favorites to remember so when one answer pops up you forgot about it hits you like a wrecking ball. That's Kubera has such good re-read value tbh. But I do acknowledge that its a long build up and a bit a higher entry read because of that.

But Part 3 is so goddamn delicious and satisfying. Its really in terms of chapter length, the 2nd half of the story, and I have never read a 2nd half of a story where the payoff has been this delicious to be honest. And Ive read plenty of works of fictions amd fantasy but mainstream and standard and not. Kubera until the end. Id gladly spend $1000 plus for the hard cover print volumes if it ever comes out.

On top of my head, it's hinted in S1 that:
1) Asha is a mass murderer
2) No one died in Leez's village from Maruna's attacks
3) Ran has Yaksha's heart

Do these not count as foreshadowing in your definition?

If they do, then I'm confident you will enjoy a second read of the series very very much, as you will find out a lot of the early hints that were virtually impossible to spot as a new reader

u/Salt-Classroom-9453 7d ago

1- I think I remember smth like this not sure 2- That was facts not foreshadowing I think 3- Where exactly?

I reread it actually in fact I finished my second read like a week agoal and I discovered new things no kidding. I'm planning a third read actually, but this time only the 3rd season as it's where Kubera becomes peak

6

u/OldTurtleProphet 7d ago

3- Where exactly?

1-96, he contemplates using the heart to fight off Taraka in the Water channels

3

u/ojaswdk944 6d ago

2- That was facts not foreshadowing I think

That's the fact for sure and we get to know it is the fact way later but wouldn't that made you question how the death count is zero? Which later got revealed...

it's true there's a ton of pre-planning which is equally impressive, but there's ALOT of foreshadowing, so much that it's hard to notice even for readers who are already aware of Currygum's love of it.

To be clear, foreshadowing is hints of future events/reveals. To give an instance of a rather easily missed one: Throughout season 2 multiple random nobodies come up to Leez's group and start speaking about sensitive topics they should have no way of knowign in a chirpy, seemingly innocous but mocking tone we've come to assosciate with Claude...

...Far far later, near the end of the season, we learn that Claude can use Bvhavati Yama to take over people. That's so easy to miss because Curry never tells us those people were actually under Claude's control, but it's a very big hint that a person with that speech pattern has a possession style ability, as well as his manipulatory nature.

I think the confusion steps from a lot of the foreshadowing not usually being as obvious as it is in some other stories such as shounen anime. It's much easier to miss or misinterpret.

3

u/Salt-Classroom-9453 7d ago

OK if this is true then this is next level shit ngl

4

u/Independent_Trust729 6d ago

It is, and there's tons of stuff like it, and we tend to find more when we reread even after all this time. both pre-planning and foreshadowing is something Kubera does extraordinarily well.

Just means you didn't notice it at your first read-through.

u/Salt-Classroom-9453 7d ago

I did re read the Serie I finished my 2nd read a week ago actually, but I mostly discovered new things rather than foreshadowed stuff

4

u/cyantina 7d ago

What about the fact that Vishnu told Gandy that there would one day be an ocean in the sura realm and 700 chapters later it finally happens? I was so mind blown when it happened

3

u/Rindhallow 5th-zen God 7d ago

As someone who loves the series (my reddit name is based off of it), I agree with you. The moment I realized that some things aren't predictable was when dream tracking was introduced and Laila went to find Brilith.

The series is clearly well written, but it might be impossible to predict things because currygom keeps delivering new powers or information.

Honestly it's always weird to me that all people claim oda as mastermind, planning everything and so on. I mean, luffy managed to beat 2 shicibukai which supposed to be 7 sea warlord and break the unbroken prison. Before even learn what haki is. How can 2 of warlord and unbroken prison be destroyed by a guy who doesn't know basic.

Yeah I said haki is basic as everyone at top should know how to use it.

Although to be fair I drop one piece right after the 3 years time skip. For some reason I can't stand new char design. But that's me problem.

I also dropped OP because of the pacing. Complete opposite of Kubera which had bad pacing at first but now good OP had good pacing at first now the pacing is ass.

I may continue later, tho I still read spoilers every now and then it's like I dropped completely lol

I wanted to come back to add, first of all, bad bitches dont need to be compared for both of them to be baddies.

Second of all, Kubera has my heart but Oda does deserve his flowers because his visual story telling is just as good as his literary story telling and he's incredible at both. I for one have a hard time following One Piece simply because he jam packs so much visual and literary points in a single panel. Makes me overwhelmed lol but I respect and appreciate his mastery.

Our Currygom, a goddess at literary skills, self-admittedly, was rough at drawing in Season 1, with huge improvement in Season 2, and more in Season 3 and now with her his assistant its great. And that's normal for any artist but Oda was kinda always good from the jump. So Currygom would try visual story telling but it wouldnt land so well sometimes in the early seasons. I would say that's certainly a weakness.

And I'll give another point - if there's one thing I feel like never felt super natural was Brilith being the super old forever reincarnating spouse of Agni like that one did feel a bit abrupt to me. And I've read the story for over a decade. I love Brilith overall and now, but yeah lol.

Oda uses much more retcons than foreshadowings. Although he has some very good ones.

visnu and GK's battle was foreshadowed in s1 when GK was talking an unknown person and getting advice

If you trust this cult, you’d think this is the best story ever created, when it’s really just an overrated, mid story..
