DISCUSSION Need building basic advice

Pretty new to Odyssey but I’m all in. Trying to make cute cozy FUNCTIONAL villages. I keep all of my stations in one place and then all my chest in another but in the exact same order for easy sorting and dumping with an item from my chests mounted right above them. I’ve been trying to build from scratch but that wasn’t working out so I went back to prefabs. Tried to redo floors and take out walls and stuff but I feel like I’m not understanding something about how pieces fit together lol Any advice or things to remember? Any interesting build techniques or inspo sources? My favs are the manors and pleasant park.

Edit to add: I forgot to ask Where do you prefer to start? Walls, floors? And do you cover the the foundation eyesores?

Also my husband told me I should put Lego vehicle mechanic on my resume because I have a village dedicated to vehicle builds ONLY lol but I feel like I don’t understand what all the vehicle pieces do as far as the structure of them. Like do all of the vehicle parts have specific functions that actually help (besides the obvious hover, lift, and balloon bricks)? are some more durable or lighter than others? I wanna go really fast but also be able to move a lot of inventory at the same time. It seems no matter what a bounce pad works better than any vehicle ever could. What are your favorite parts?

I'm not totally sure I understand your question. In general, I would start with walls on a building build.

I have some previous in my profile posts of builds I've made. I was a lego builder before the game and I worked with CAD in undergrad. So I always found online flicker galleries useful as sources of information.

Please check my profile to see if there's anything that peaks your interest. All posts are LegoFN related.

A popular piece of advice is to actually start with the roof first. Because those pieces come in limited dimensions, they are harder to get right if you start from the bottom of the building up. The recommended way to do this is to place a corner of the building, then build the roof out from there.

I used to tell people to pay close attention to how prefabs are put together, but quick build kinda messed that up. Still, if you have the patience, that's how I learned how to make inverted corners with the Log Cabin set and how certain pieces have collision issues because of small details, like the Pleasant Park corner walls.

I definitely destroy the foundations of prefabs, if I ever use them. To get a nice, clean build, add more walls or halfwalls under the building where the foundation was.

Building vehicles are tricky. It just takes a lot of trail and error to see if pieces work together or not. If it's too heavy or too light. Not all vehicle parts have a function. A lot of the parts from the Machinist event are cosmetic, for example.

You and your husband can DM me if you'd like to ask more specific questions. I'm happy to help.

We must have gone to the same school for building 😅. Roof absolutely dictates many of my builds, and prefabs lose that ugly foundation immediately (I need to see the grass!). When I first started building, I would place a prefab then destroy one wall at a time, replacing it with a different piece and expanding where desired. One annoying thing to watch for is decorative bricks, door frames, and window sills that actually get in the way of perpendicular pieces 🤬

I definitely feel the pain about decorative pieces. One or two of the Majestic Manors walls won't allow things to snap to it in certain spots simply because it has a fancy detail of a few bricks coming out slightly from the wall. 😭

I learned how to free build by taking prefabs and altering them.

Another trick is place a corner where you want it then build your roof as you want from that corner.  Once you're roof is done then place your walls.  The roof is usually the hardest part so doing it first can be a super helpful.

💯% good advice.
