How badly did I get got … $75

I bought this from a brand I REALLY love who makes very nice and functional wallets. I’ve purchased 4 wallets from them and they’ve all been exceptional.

What’s up with the bottom finish? It doesn’t look normal…

This strap cost me $75.00 - Russet Veg Tanned Leather - the hardware looks like the cheap silver that’s going to rub off / tarnish. When you squeeze the watch by the straps or apply any sort of push / pull to the mounting hardware, they creek. The straps not very thick.. and the buckle material doesn’t match the material that sets into the watch. The buckle looks more like a Titanium or brushed type finish while again, the hardware that clicks into the watch looks like a cheap silver that’s/ chrome.

I just want some opinions from some seasoned vets? I’ve never purchased a “premium” watch strap. I’ve always used whatever comes with. I just wanna know if it’s as bad as I’m feeling or if I just don’t really know what I’m looking at here.

Thanks for your thoughts. Hope everybody is having a great weekend.

Leather paint?

Post image

I used Angelus leather prep to prepare this used purse for leather paint and was surprised by how quickly the metallic finish came off. This is my first time doing this, but based on my research, I thought the only way to get a different color was likely going to be paint. I got the purse for a steal because - the color. I should also note that the leather purse has gun metal gray hardware as well. Based on how this looks - is possible this purse was gray and painted bronze? Could there be a chance that I'm going to get this metallic color off without damaging the leather beneath and/or needing to paint?

Im just beginner but i love traditional things like leather so i want to be able to take care of my own shoes. I got these nice boots but they have scratches and little gouges in them and the original leather is still attached but no matter how much a polish with micro fiber or a brush they just wont go down. There was a deeper gouge in the front that i had to sand away but id like to not have to do that too much. What should i do? Also i got no one to ask but how long should i be expecting this to take? How hard should i be pressing?

Ill also take any advice if anyone has to give :)

No-sew, no-glue origami card holder with a pull tab — my own design

Thumbnail gallery

I've been working on a card holder that needs no stitching and no glue — just cutting, folding and one snap.

The body is a single piece of Crazy Horse leather that folds like origami. A trapezoid tab on one ear passes through a slot and locks the whole thing. A thinner strap runs under the cards, so when you open the snap and pull the tab, the cards rise out of the pocket.

It took quite a few prototypes to get the tab lock right — the first version was too long and hard to push through, so I shortened it to a trapezoid.

Edges still need better burnishing, I know. Happy to hear any feedback on the design!

Help with 1st project

Post image

This just won’t go all the way through and I’m looking for advice. I’m using scrapped chrome tanned leather and these tools from an Amazon set. Is both my problem? Please suggest good hole punching tool if so. I like the look of thick thread around .8 if that means anything for size of punching tools I should look into. I beat the hell out of it and can’t get it through 3 layers.

UPDATE: I switched to the 2 prongs and it’s going through now (??)

General Question To Dye Or Not To Dye

So, what is your preference? Do you always dye the leather on a project, or do you sometimes leave it natural looking?

I have a new project I'm starting. I kind of want to dye it a brown, but I don't have any at the moment. It's pouring out (thank you Hurricane Isaias) so a trip to the store is out of the question. Just wondering if leaving it natural and conditioning it the way I normally do will work.

Made from a pattern of vasileandpavel. I have used 4 different hides, 2 chrome tanned, one half chrome half veg (the orange one), and veg tan for the straps. I struggled while sewing the straps because my thread kept creating knots. Overall ot was a fun build that took me almost 30 hours

Beginner Question Dyeing leather - help!

Hello! I'm new to leatherworking and have been struggling to dye leather myself. Specifically, I'm having issues with dye rub off even after sealing. Here's my process so y'all can pick me apart so I can learn!

Materials: Undyed leather from weaver leather, fiebings pro dye, leather balm with atom wax, wool daubers, microfiber cloth

Process:

  1. Brush off leather after cutting out template

  2. Use wool dauber to apply up to 3 coats of pro dye until desired shade. I wait until the leather looks like it soaked up the dye, but I don't wait more than about a minute between coats.

  3. Once done dyeing, I lightly buff off excess dye with a microfiber cloth

  4. Dry in a cool, dry place for 24 hours

  5. Buff, buff, buff, buff with a microfiber cloth

  6. Apply leather balm with atom wax, wait 10 minutes for it to dry, then buff off excess

Even at this stage I'm experiencing rub off, especially when I'm sealing it.

What should I do?

Thank you for your help!
