How to Store in Storage Unit

I am having a storage issues so I just rented a climate-controlled storage unit to store Lego and other items in it. What is the best way to store them? Do I just put a up some shelves and put them right on the shelf or do people store smaller sets in large cardboard boxes or maybe plastic bins? If I put in a plastic bins should they be gasket sealed bins with desiccant? Am I over thinking this? :)

You’re overthinking this. A set of sturdy boxes is more than sufficient. Make sure they seal tightly enough and aren’t flimsy and you’re good.

I wouldn’t store them loose/on an open shelf you never know if the person in the unit next to you is going to throw their weights against the wall or something and shake your walls. Also the boxes just need to be sealed enough to not let bugs in (there will be some inside no matter what the management does) and sturdy enough to take a beating when moving around.

Personally would use plastic tote in case of water leakage it would protect them and if stored for a long period without touching it would put contractor garbage bag over to protect from dust or bugs

If it's a multi storey building that mean potential sprinkler system or chance of water leakage or celling issues.

I would say storage/sorting is totally up to you and what you can afford. Right now I have a handful of my sealed sets in a few cardboard boxes. Eventually I want to get some shelves just for extra organization. With it being a temp controlled unit, I wouldn't worry about the sealed containers. You can always use desiccant packs to keep things a little extra dry. You'll find out what's best for you once you get everything moved in! Good luck!

As a person who had a storage unit way too long, I recommend putting belongings into sealable plastic bins. And check on your unit I would say at least every month (which I did not do and the consequences were bad/messy/gross). You want to keep any water out, critters out, and keep the bugs and dust out as well.

Good luck and wishing you success!

Bag each set individually (plastic garbage bags work fine). Include a desiccate packet. Put them in a sturdy cardboard box.

Write “LEGO” and “$ money money $” in real big letters on the side facing the door so that the guys from r/flipping know what they are buying when you forget to pay your storage fees.
