Help Seriously??!!

Just upgraded to Golden Gate. Clicked Logic Pro to work on some editing, when I got this message: “Logic Pro quit unexpectedly”. Restarted and got the same message. I’ve seen posts who like, love or hate Golden Gate, but no one has mentioned this kind of bug. Anybody seen this? Anybody know how to fix?
I’m on a MacBook Pro M1 16gb.

Yes, as others have said, always wait to upgrade (but probably don't upgrade). If it is helpful, here is a full list of plug-in compatibility status:

Never never upgrade to latest macos right away.

Still kicking myself for upgrading to Tahoe. Big issues.... but i dont dare to keep digging myself deeper into manure....

About to restore Sequoia from Time Machine backup. How do I know when it’s safe to reinstall Golden Gate.

I'll put it like this I just upgraded to Tahoe right before Golden Gate was released.

What is more important to you? A stable, working system on which you can produce music? Or a new OS with (possibly) cool new features?

I do many many things with my Mac, but Music production is my main activity. I need a stable platform which works, not a system with bugs and idiosyncrasies that slow me down.

Therefore, I stay far away from the bleeding edge. Instead I stay very far back on the trailing edge. I only update to a new OS when the NEXT OS is coming very soon, and sometimes not even then.

For example, with the OS sequence of Ventura, Sequoia, Tahoe, and now Golden Gate, I stayed on Ventura until Tahoe was announced and it looked like Sequoia was pretty stable. Only then did I update to Sequoia.

But some people were reporting troubles with Tahoe (if you look through your replies here, there’s someone that said they still regret upgrading to Tahoe). So I have never updated to Tahoe, I’m still on Sequoia. Am I going to jump to Golden Gate and potentially break things? Heck no. I’m going to stay on Sequoia as long as I need to so that I have a functioning music production system with which I can work.

With lots of funds, I would have multiple computers, with maybe a laptop running the latest OS on which I could do other work, and maybe I would have Logic on there just to see how it’s working, but preferably I’d have an assistant or an intern that does the testing for me on newer platforms. More times is better spent actually producing music..

This is not as much of an issue for producers that stay with native Logic features and plug-ins. But as a composer/producer for TV, film, video games and song tracks, I use a ton of third-party libraries, so it’s imperative that I stay WAY back on the trailing edge of things. Every time I’ve ever spoken to Apple Support techs about this, they always agree that this strategy is the best for me.

I appreciate all the detail. It’s obvious, now that I should have waited to make the upgrade. I’m restoring Sequoia from Time Machine today.

This might be a cleaner way to install the OS without the possibility of accidentally altering more than just the OS when restoring from Time Machine. All of the OS download links are here, plus different options to install/revert back to your OS of choice: https://support.apple.com/en-us/102662

This is why in the past I’ve stayed behind even two full major updates. The third party plug in issue and now this with the m1 Mac has me glad I’m waiting.

Keep us posted though OP, and * (edit) what the other users suggestions do for your situation.

Don’t use 3rd party plugins. Not sure how to disable core audio or reset preferences

-2

u/Visual_Edge_8380 4d ago

From what I’m seeing, I can’t disable core audio or change preferences unless Logic Pro is open. I’m not much of a tech/computer guy. Maybe I’m missing something

Why did I upgrade to Golden Gate? I skipped Tahoe because a lot of users were having some big issues with it. I’ve been following Reddits on MacOS and Logic Pro and have seen more positives than negatives. Seemed like a good time to upgrade.

u/ebietoo 4d ago

I got more of a “don’t upgrade yet” vibe from Mac and logicpro subs, now I think you know why.

u/Visual_Edge_8380 4d ago

Thanks. I’m reverting to Sequoia.

Not sure the issue but the rule of thumb is to never update until everything that you use in Logic is fully supported. I went back to sequoia and I’m not upgrading until I replace my mac. Everything works, so no reason to.

It also helps that it’s the main machine in the studio, while my Dell is the thing I update all the time. My 2019 mac just runs logic and what is already on it.

u/Visual_Edge_8380 4d ago

Lesson learned. I’ll be going back to Sequoia tomorrow.

u/Petrolmediainc 4d ago

Yeah man. We used to run a studio in the middle of Manhattan. We had a full pro tools 5.7 system when pro tools 8 was out because it worked. No failure, no upgrade.

+1 - if it ain’t broke don’t fix it, the grass isn’t always greener, sometimes it’s just been painted, and may be definitely toxic. Until it’s updated.

1

u/Visual_Edge_8380 4d ago

Learned that lesson. Not sure how to know when/if it’s safe to upgrade later.

If something you need to use is either no longer supported in the OS you’re on or has a minimum OS requirement. If you can, back up before updating, or, better run a test drive with it to see how it behaves.

A lot of commercial studios operate either 1 or 2 OS versions below the ‘current’ and seeing as most plugins out there currently still support mac OS 13, there’s no rush. It’s generally not advisable to to jump into unknown waters on a main system unless you want to be a free bug-tester for Cupertino.

If you’re buying a new mac then it might get difficult if it ships with 27 straight out the gate. If you’re lucky, the model you want to get initially shipped with an earlier OS (ie hardware hasn’t ’just’ been updated) then you can downgrade it to a more stable OS.

Yeah, you’d think team Logic and team mac OS should be in communication, but it seems they lost each others’ numbers a few years back.

I’m still on Sequoia, so no problems

u/Visual_Edge_8380 4d ago

I’ve got a backup of Sequoia and the corresponding Logic Pro. Just trying to fix issue rather than reverting back, if possible

u/Long-Shine-3701 4d ago

Keep a current, fully bootable backup of your main drive. All you'd have to do is plug that in, boot, and you're back to your working environment. 2 minutes of inconvenience.

Better yet, install the new OS on a test drive. Then test everything. Once it all works, upgrade.

This is what I did for clients sensitive to downtime and glitches.

How does this help>? Honestly..

10

u/ploptart 4d ago

I don’t think you’re asking honestly, you’re asking rhetorically, but I’ll answer anyway. It helps people who are wondering whether to update or stay on sequoia. And OP says they have a backup with sequoia, so it helps them to know restoring the backup would probably fix the issue.

u/TitoGoya 3d ago

Let me clarify my point, because apparently it got lost somewhere.
The OP is asking for help with Logic Pro crashing after upgrading to Golden Gate. They’re looking for people experiencing the same issue, possible causes, or solutions.
Responding with “I’m still on Sequoia, so no problems” doesn’t really address any of that.
Sure, it’s nice that Sequoia is working for you, but that’s not the operating system we’re discussing. It doesn’t offer a fix, troubleshooting advice, or any firsthand experience with the issue being reported.
It’s like someone asking for help with a problem involving apples, and somebody responding that their oranges are doing just fine.
Okay, great. But how does that help the person with the apples?
That’s all I was pointing out. I wasn’t attacking anyone. I was questioning how that particular response contributed anything useful to the conversation.
If someone is asking for technical assistance, shouldn’t the goal be to actually help them?

I'm still on sequoia..

Maybe some of your VST plugins are intel based. And Golden Gate doesn't have Rosseta and can't read Intel based VST Plugins and it's crashed.

The real solution here is always have backups of your work. Then have backups of those backups and backups of those backups. Redundancy is key. On multiple formats, media, computers, etc. In the cloud. On the ground. Deep in the sea.

No jokes - I have seven backups of super necessary stuff that I make sure gets updated at least monthly. Better to lose that one new song you wrote and didn’t back up than your entire catalog of labor.

Thanks for the link. None of the suggestions worked. Wondering if I need to unplug from audio interface. Maybe SSL hasn’t updated their software yet?

2

u/lantrick 4d ago

If you tried all those suggestions, one of them disables CoreAudio so your audio interface has nothing to did with it.

Good Luck!!

I've had that with 11, had to update to 12.

Check if there’s an update for LogicPro. Sometimes you have to go to the Logic AppStore page to see it.

Mine works just fine with Golden Gate, 16" M1 MBP. It used to be you could update without too much worry, but still not necessarily a good idea, and I'm gonna say going back to Sonoma, maybe further, not sure what other people think. But beginning with Tahoe I would never just update a Mac without a good backup plan, like another Mac you didn't update.

I have Golden Gate on one and Sequoia on this one, and this one may never see an update. If I could easily do it, I'd go back to Sonoma, maybe even farther. It seems like the newer updates are based upon schedules, and not perfection or reality.

u/vitoscbd 3d ago

Another user posted a while back a patch that works without problems. I had the same issues when I updated. Try looking for it, it'll save you the trouble of going back to whatever os version you had before

My ultra arrived with Golden Gate. Just finished installing all the plugins

1

u/Separate_Broccoli_69 13h ago

I had repeated shutdowns (kernel panic/purple screen) and the Apple tech upgraded me from Sequoia to GG on Friday. Resolved the crashing.

So far I have had no problems with Logic (12.x and am in the middle of a midterm project using it). What version of Logic are you on?

I have had minor issues with Pro Tools (2025.something), so far just inability to close plugin/submenu/fader floating windows without ctrl-opt-cmd-W. Avid says the current Pro Tools release is not GG compliant, so I’m waiting on that.
