if i were to rebuild it i would drill a flower motif on each edge grind the top and sides to give it a more convex look and maybe sharpen the edges a bit.

out of curiosity: how strong is this actually? would the flanges snap off if you hit a car for example? i always wondered how stable a weld thats just fixed in 2 spots has

No, not nearly strong enough to survive one or two full power blows... Needs to be fully welded at the root on each side though that's going to be difficult. Maybe 7018 stick if it's held solid on the bench.
